Where do I place a foun-

tain to bring in more

opportunities? Will

hanging a crystal enhance my

career? Should I paint my room

green for better feng shui?

These are frequently asked

questions, yet small things like

this will hardly make much of a

difference, and even if they do,

their effect will be short-lived.

For the long-term, the foundation

of your energetic environment

will have the greatest impact.

So where do you begin? The

first thing I say is to minimize

your clutter. When I mention

this in presen-

tations, some

people sigh,

others groan

and many nod

knowingly.

Most everyone

relates to clut-

ter, no one

seems to like

having it, and

yet, unless

someone is

spring cleaning or a move is

imminent, it’s rare to get motivated

to clear it out.

Everything in our environment

is a reflection of what’s

going on in our inner

environment, and a clut-

tered home is directly cor-

related with the mental

and emotional clutter we

hold inside. You will often

hear me say, “clear your clutter,

clear your mind.” By sorting out

your clutter, you sort out your

life, which results in a release

and renewal of your

own life force.

Why we hold on to clutterClutter is woven into our emo-

tional energy and it drains us. It

ties us to the past instead of

allowing us to live in the present

moment, yet we hold on to it for

various reasons. How many of

these clutter scenarios do you

relate to?

Clothes that don’t fitBy keeping clothes that don’t

fit, you constantly have a visual

reminder that you are not where

you once were. If you can accept

where you are with your size in

the present and let go of the

clothes that represent the “old”

you, you will have an opportunity

to create a “new” you.

Pacific Islands Constructionbelieves that the purchaseof a photovoltaic (PV) sys-

tem for your home or businessrequires a bit of education onyour part before a unit isinstalled on your rooftop.Questions such as “How is thesystem being installed on theroof?” “How much bolt penetra-tion is required to securelyinstall the system?” and “Whatflashing details will be employedto ensure the roof will not leak inthe future?” are just some of thequestions often asked by thoselooking into purchasing a solarsystem. Since this is a relatively new

buying decision for many,Pacific Islands Construction’sgoal is to answer these questionsso that you are better preparedwhen evaluating a solar system.Generally, PV and solar ther-

mal systems are installed onyour roof. To secure these mod-ules, bolts are used to penetrateinto your rafters. Due to highwinds experienced in Hawaii, these bolts are sunk deep intoyour roof, and each hole repre-sents a potential leak. As a gener-al rule, one should expect thatthese penetrations will beflashed in a manner to prevent

potential leak-age.

Rule No. 1:Your contrac-tor should useindustry-stan-dard flashingdetails, notsome caulkingaround thepenetrat ion .Ask the con-tractor to showyou the flash-ing they expectto use. Thesepenetrations, ifdone properly, won’t leak nowor in the future.Unfortunately, many PV systems have beeninstalled improperly and haveleaked — particularly duringthe recent rainy weather. Thus,it is imperative that you haveyour system installed properlyfrom the get-go. While it costsmore to have flashings installed, the security they provide faroutweigh the cost. There are many manufactur-

ers in the solar business that arerelative newcomers to theindustry. These companies may

be names you are familiar with, but may not actually be makingthe modules with their nameson them. Companies that havebeen in business for more than20 years actually have a betterunderstanding of the modules’construction and generally con-struct their own modules.Companies that are providing25-year power warranties (after25 years, modules will provideat least 80 percent of the origi-nal energy production) should

have a proven track record ofcustomer satisfaction. Kyocerahas been making modules formore than 35 years, and mod-ules they made more than aquarter-century ago have onlydepreciated by 10 percent.

Rule number 2: Research whothe manufacture is and how longit has been in business.Module construction is actually

one of the biggest concerns whenconsidering what PV system topurchase. Pacific IslandsConstruction has been stressingthat many modules sold in Hawaiiare not constructed for theislands’ climate. While it is true

that Hawaii is ideal for solar sys-tems, other factors such as humid-ity, corrosive conditions, highheat, UV exposure and generalbiological conditions, such asmolds, do not provide ideal condi-tions for module-life expectancy.

Pacific Islands Constructionfeels it has an obligation to pro-vide the best equipment andmaterials to its customers. By pro-viding the highest quality materi-als and offering proper installa-tion from the beginning, the com-pany guarantees its customersgreat value and peace of mind. Pacific Islands Construction

The BIA Renaissance Building andRemodeling Awards, established in 1986,celebrate excellence in design and con-struction of new and remodeled projectsin Hawaii. The 26th annual showcase, held May 4,

featured 34 entrants from Hawaii, Kauai,Maui and Oahu, and recognized compet-ing categories that included Details,Kitchen & Bath, Landscaping, New &Remodeled Commercial Building, New &Remodeled Residential Building, PublicWorks, Hawaii BuiltGreen™ andHistorical Remodeling. The entries were judged on creativity,

use of materials, environmental and sus-tainability, functionality, design princi-ples, value, interior space, overall qualityand workmanship. The highlight of the awards ceremony

was the recognition of the top four OverallGrand Awards and the Carl ReppunAward. This column will feature the win-ner of the Carl Reppun Award, namedafter the first chairman of the RenaissanceAwards program. Carl Reppun was a pio-neer in prefabricated cabinet distributionin the 1980s, the first distributor ofDiamond Cabinets, and he supplied cabi-nets to many small-volume remodelingcontractors. This award is given in hismemory to a small-volume remodeler whoenters this awards program. The winner ofThe Carl Reppun Award was MokuluaWoodworking Ltd., Historical Division for“A Historic Remodel.”To balance modern comfort with his-

toric preservation, the key goals of thisremodel were to refurbish where cost anddesign were effective, replicate wherepossible and update where necessary.Every area was evaluated to establish

effective restoration costs while maintain-ing the historic design. Great care wastaken to restore doors, windows, floors, trims, soffits and hardware to maintain thecharacter of the home and reduce its car-bon footprint. When restoration was not feasible, cus-

tom fabricated doors, windows, cabinets, soffits casings and trims were created tomatch the existing elements. To bring thehome up to code and modern energy stan-

dards, low-flow plumbing, low-voltagelighting, Energy Star fans and Energy Starappliances were installed. In the new two-car garage addition, the exterior of thehome was built to match the existinghome by custom built soffits, identicalroofing and traditional garage doors.

Silicone roof coatings haveexperienced an explosivegrowth in Hawaii in the last

three years — and for good reason. While the water-based acrylic roofcoatings, such as HawaiianSunGuard’s “Cool Roof in aBucket,” are still the “go-to” coat-ings for most roofs, silicone offersa unique advantage in “pondingwater” situations. These are roofsthat have continual standing waterthat will not burn off even after 48

hours of no rain.Silicone, because it is not water-

based, does not absorb water overtime. That makes it ideal for flatroofs in such wet areas as Manoaand the Windward side. “However, there are some secrets

about how to apply the coating,”says Ty Boughton, general managerof LeakMaster Roofing, who will be

leading the seminar. “It’s a com-pletely different technique from ourother coatings. Since it does notneed fabric reinforcement, in someways it’s easier.” Both versions of the Hawaiian

SunGuard coatings will be demon-strated and on sale for one day only— Saturday, May 14, from noon to 4p.m. — at Green Energy Outlet, located at 575-G Cooke St. inKakaako. GEO is Hawaii’s first public car

Have you ever hadany doubts aboutyour home’s elec-

trical system? Is it morethan 50 years old, and is itproperly grounded? While most peoplefocus on the cosmetics oftheir property, a home’selectrical system is oftentaken for granted untilan electrical hazardoccurs. And that’s a riskno one should be willingto take, according toChad Matsumoto andBronson Apana, co-own-ers of AlternativeElectric in Honolulu.“With all the housefires that recently havebeen occurring on Oahu,an increasing number of

homeowners are ques-tioning the safety of theirhome’s electrical sys-tem,” says Matsumoto.“If you ever thoughtabout having your sys-tem checked out, whywait any longer?”Matsumoto offers a fewdo-it-yourself checks thatcan be done before youeven call an electrician:

• Do you have looseoutlets in your home?Loose outlets may lead toloose connections, thuscreating an arcing effect.Arcing may cause spark-

ing and excessive heat, leading to a possible fire.

• Have you ever hadrodent problems? Rodentsmay chew away the insula-tion around your wiring, leaving the live portionexposed.

• Are there GFCI(ground fault circuitinterrupter) outlets inyour kitchen and bath-room? Today, GFCI out-lets are required in theserooms because of theirclose proximity to water. These outlets trip offwhen an imbalance ofcurrent is sensed, thuseliminating potentialshock hazards.

• Does your home haveknob-and–tube wiring? This type of wiring wasgenerally installed beforethe 1960s. As time goesby, the insulation aroundthis type of wiring getsbrittle and starts to falloff — leaving liveexposed wiring. Today, most insurance compa-nies will not open a newpolicy if the home hasknob-and-tube wiring.

• Do you have prob-lems with circuit break-ers tripping off? Circuitbreakers are a source ofprotection for yourhome’s electrical sys-tem. “While most electrical

contractors shy away fromrewiring older homes,Alternative Electric wel-comes all types of electricalwork,” says Matsumoto.“We are a full-service elec-trical contractor offering

solar photovoltaics, newconstruction, rewires, ren-ovations, maintenance, trouble calls or just chang-ing a light or outlet.”Call Alternative Electricat 630-6741 or 285-3663.

Expensive, butunused items

Have you ever pur-

chased something that

cost “a lot” of money

and later realized it

wasn’t a wise pur-

chase? Keeping these

items constantly

reminds you of your

“mistake.” Each time

it’s in view, you sub-

consciously judge your-

self, which holds you

in the past. Let it go.

Keeping things “just in case”Do you have five umbrellas, but only two people in

your home? Do you have a closetful of shopping bags

that you’ve been saving from years ago? Holding onto

everything that comes into your possession shows an

anxiety about the future and a lack of trust that the

universe will provide what you need, when you need

it. When you open up space in your home or office,

you open up the possibility that something new can

arrive.

Items from a past relationshipGetting rid of possessions after a break-up or a death

is always difficult because it means you really have to

come to terms with your grief and loss. There is no set

time when things “should” be cleared out, but the

sooner you are able to clear out possessions associated

with a past relationship, the sooner you are able to live

in the present moment.

It’s fine to keep items to remember the positive

aspects of a person’s existence in your life. Clearing

out others’ things is for when you need to let go and

move on.

Clear Your ClutterThere are many methods to clearing clutter, but the

simplest is using the theory of relativity. It states that

whatever is closest to you affects you the most, so

start clearing from where you spend the most time.

Your bedroom? Your office? Your car?

Mark your CalendarThinking about clearing your clutter is not effective.

Make an appointment with yourself, just like you

would with a good friend. It is totally worth it because

at the end of the day, you will feel far better than if you

spent it at the spa or out on the golf course. I promise.

Painting is one of themost cost-effectiveways to give your home

or workplace a fresh new look. It’s also a way to enhance ahome’s “curb appeal” if you’replanning to sell.

Probably the mostimportant first step if youare ready to paint the interi-or or exterior of your homeor office building is toensure that the paintingcontractor you choose is

experienced and licensed.Island Budget Painting

owner Ted Wexler and hiscrew have combined expe-rience of more than 37years in the business and avery long roster of satisfied, repeat clients.Tesoro Service Stations

throughout Oahu are anexample of a long-standingclient of Island BudgetPainting. Property man-agers, management compa-nies specializing in town-homes and apartment build-ings, and homeowners asso-ciations are also regularclients, requiring not only

new paint jobs,but also ongoingma i n t e n an c e .Realtors upgrad-

ing a home to enhance itssaleability also call onWexler, often with tightdeadlines to meet. He workswith some of Hawaii’s toparchitects and interiordesigners, as well as directlywith homeowners.“People often assume

that because your companyhandles big projects, youwon’t be available for thesmaller jobs,” Wexler said.“That just isn’t the casewith Island BudgetPainting. We enjoy thechallenge of transforming ahouse or apartment for anowner with a great paint

job. Working with a large, experienced contractordoes not have to cost more, because we know exactlyhow to proceed and have allthe latest equipment.Hiring an amateur painteris like hiring a novice com-puter technician ... theymay give you a lower perhour price, but it will takethem lots more time toachieve the desired results. And the results may not beexactly what you hadhoped for. When we quotea price, we explain exactlywhat it will take to do a per-fect job ... meaning one thatwill be right the first time.”Wexler is a specialist in

color selection and canassist clients in making

choices and matching exist-ing colors or furnishings, aswell as advise on the bestproducts for the job takinginto account factors such asweather conditions in thearea. His crew is experi-enced in working at diffi-cult job sites that mayrequire operating withinthe parameters set by con-dominiums affectingaccess, parking and timesthat work can be per-formed. The company alsoprovides concrete repair, which often is called for incommercial contractsinvolving older buildingsthat are being restored orconverted for new uses. For more information,

addressed to AlternateEnergy owner and founderBruce Ekimura, in its entirety:

Dear Mr. Ekimura,

As you know, AlternateEnergy is a highly valuedcustomer of MitsubishiElectric. We are pleasedand honored to haveAlternate Energy installour winning solar modulesfor your Hawaiian cus-tomers. The purpose ofthis letter is to provide

background informationon our company and itssolar products.

Place of ManufactureOur solar modules aremanufactured entirely inJapan. The cells are made

at a factory in the city ofIida located in Nagano pre-fecture. Then, the modulesare assembled in Kyoto, thehistoric capital of Japan.

Safe ProductBecause of the recentradioactive release atFukushima nuclear powerplant, some consumersmay understandably haveconcerns about the safetyof Japanese made prod-ucts. As our solar prod-ucts are manufacturedseveral hundred miles tothe south of theFukushima plant, we havenot experienced any prob-lems with their safety. Itmay also interest yourcustomers to know thatthe U.S. Customs Servicescreens products fromJapan for radioactivity.

Maybe the economyreally is gettingbetter, but if

you’re still planning toforego a pricey vacationthis summer, you're likelynot alone. Rather thandropping a lot of cash ontravel, many Americans arechoosing to spend theirhard-earned money wherethey’ll enjoy it for longer —in their own backyards.

Upgrading your back-yard may work for you onmultiple levels. Not onlywill you increase yourenjoyment of the time youspend there, backyardenhancements like decks, patios and landscaping canincrease your home’s resalevalue. You can create yourown oasis of luxury athome for much less thanthe cost of a luxury vaca-tion.

From murals to outdoor

kitchens, resort-style luxu-ry can be had for less rightin your own backyard. Toget an idea of where tobegin, think of the featuresand decor that you mostloved about your last resortstay and work towardrecreating them at home fora fraction of the cost.

Here are some ideas toget you started:

Dazzling decorYour outdoor decor can

go a long way toward creat-ing a luxury resort feeling.Draw on favorite luxurytouches of interior design-ers, such as luxurious floorcoverings and engagingwall murals. An outdoormural can transform aspace from mundane toexotic.

New technology, dubbedSmartStick, can allow youto mount a mural virtually

anywhere outdoors. All youneed is a flat surface (otherthan non-painted brick). The space-age material willwithstand all weather con-ditions, won’t shrink orcurl, and can even wraparound corners and curves. It’s easily removable, peel-ing effortlessly away fromthe surface without leavingany marks or residue, andcan then be re-used else-where. Log on towww.muralsyourway.comto learn more.

Seating that sizzlesFor some items, it’s

worth paying a bit more toget better quality, and out-door furniture is one ofthem. You’ll be spending alot of time on your deck or

patio, and your seating areashould be comfortable, inviting and luxurious. Atable and at least four chairsis a must, but think beyondthe box and consider incor-porating loveseats, loungesand ottomans into yourseating design.

If you have the space,

consider creating seatinggroupings throughout theyard. Your deck or patiowill be the main entertain-ing area, but a simplebistro set tucked awaybeneath a tree or beside aflower bed can make agreat spot for quiet chats,or reading a book while

sipping your favoritewine.

This summer, considerstaying home and keep-ing your money with youby creating a backyardresort that your wholefamily can enjoy through-out the season.

The dog days of sum-mer can be brutal onutility bills and a

major drain for pocketbooks, but they don’t have to be.During the hottest

months of the year, water iswasted because of over-irri-gation, and air conditioningsystems are forced to runlonger to keep indoor tem-peratures cool. Whilescorching temperatures canpush water and energy con-sumption to its limits, thereare ways to consume lessand save more.“Reducing water and

energy consumption isn’tas difficult as many think,”says Rhonda Hills ofKudzu.com, an onlineresource for homeownerslooking for expert homeadvice. “Even minor

changes in behavior andsmall investments in ener-gy-conscious materials canmake a big difference.” The home experts at

Kudzu.com recommend thefollowing actions to provideshort-term and long-termrelief as the mercury rises.• Install a soil or rain sen-

sor. Soil and rain sensors areeffective water conservationtools. Soil sensors monitorthe soil’s moisture contentand allow sprinklers to oper-ate only when water is need-ed. Rain sensors detect pre-cipitation and shut off sprin-klers if it is raining. Bothdevices are upgrades fromtraditional timers and cangreatly reduce water usage.• Replace old windows.

Windows are a major sourceof energy loss in most

homes. Old, single-panedwindows are inefficient andwill allow radiant heat fromthe sun to increase indoortemperatures. Replacing oldwindows with Energy Star-rated windows can save 7 to15 percent on energy billsand increase comfort withinthe home. • Use ceiling fans to circu-

late air. Ceiling fans do notreduce indoor temperatures, but they can make the home

feel more comfortable. Fanswork by circulating airacross the skin and creatinga wind chill effect whichmakes inhabitants feel cool-er. It’s been proven thatusing a fan can allow home-owners to turn up their ther-mostat by 4 degrees with nodrop in comfort level.Ensure the fan’s blades areturning counterclockwiseduring the summer to maxi-mize the wind chill effect.

Hawaii home-owners con-sidering win-

dow replacementhave new solutionswhen they shop forwindows. WindowsHawaii, the islands’fastest-growing win-dow replacement con-tractor, has the exclu-sive rights to the AnlinWindow System. These windows

— which includeeverything fromstainless-steel hard-ware to easy-to-clean vinyl frames designed towithstand the salt air and strongsunlight — are designed and man-ufactured with Hawaii in mind. Infact, Anlin windows are guaran-teed for the life of your home.Traditionally, windows in

Hawaii have consisted of single-pane jalousies. While these win-dows provide good ventilation, they lack security, are difficult toclean and do not prevent heat, dirt, noise and rain from entering thehouse. Many Hawaiian homeown-ers choose to upgrade their win-dows to Anlin vinyl dual-pane sys-tems. While homeowners find thatthey still have excellent ventilationwith the Anlin windows, they alsogain these important benefits:

• Better security. Anlin has thetop-security rating for break-ins.The windows also can be locked inan open position so that you cankeep your house ventilated andprevent entry at the same time.

• Improved insulation from heatand noise. If you have air condi-

tioning in your home, you willsave up to 35 percent off your elec-tric bill each month. Anlin win-dows also reduce the noise in yourneighborhood.

• Easy to clean/maintain. Thevinyl frames are easy to clean. Theglass is specially designed to pre-vent water spots. Upstairs or hard-to-reach windows can be removedand cleaned from inside the home.

Anlin windows are available inall sizes and styles. They filter out95 percent of ultra violet light —considered the harmful light thatfades your furniture, floor cover-ing and drapes.

Call Windows Hawaii today at671-0808 (regular business hours)or 383-7233 (after hours) for a freeconsultation and estimate. Thecompany carries a variety of win-dow brands to fit your needs andbudget.
