A UH Win Loss Would...Give UH its first three-game losing streak since the 2012-13 season...relegate UH to the consolation bracket of the DHC for the fifth time in eight years...give UH four losses through their first eight home games (UH lost just three times in 20 home games last year).

Playing Catch-UpUH has lost three of its last four games and slow starts have been a major culprit. Below are the deficits that UH has found themselves in during the start of the last four games. The lone win during the stretch was a 64-44 victo-ry over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, a game in which UH won despite converting just one field in the first nine minutes of action.

Opponent Score Time ElapsedTroy 16-0 5:08Ark.-Pine Bluff 12-6 9:02Seton Hall 7-0 1:25Princeton 15-5 4:01

Second-Half Surge: UH has proven to be a second half team this year. The ’Bows have struggled offensively in the first half, shoot-ing just 36% from the field (27% on three-pointers), committing close to nine turnovers, and averaging 29.7 points. After the break, the ’Bows have shot 49.4% (including two games in which the team shot 60% or higher) and are averaging three less turnovers. As a result, UH is averaging 8.0 ppg more after the break and out-scoring their opponents by 4.4 ppg in the second half.

“D” It Up: UH is currently allowing just 65.6 points per game, tops in the Big West and 61st in the NCAA. In UH’s last home game versus Arkansas-Pine Bluff, the Golden Lions managed just 44 points against the ’Bows, a season low. Under second-year head coach Eran Ganot, just one opponent in the last 43 games dating back to the start of last season has shot better than 50 percent against UH (UC Davis, Jan. 2016).

’Bow Bits 4UH is currently tops all Big West teams in scoring defense (65.6), personal fouls (16.4), scoring margin (+1.8) and rebound defense (32.7). 4UH dropped back-to-back games by double-digits for the first time since March 2013 (at CSUN, vs. UC Irvine). 4UH has had just two different starting lineups through nine games this year with four players - Noah Allen, Sheriff Drammeh, Gibson Johnson, and Jack Purchase - starting all games. Guards Leland Green and Brocke Stepteau have alternated starts the last three games. 4Brocke Stepteau has averaged 9.6 ppg and 3.6 apg in the last five contests. Ironically during that span he’s averaging better num-

bers during his three games off the bench (13.3 ppg, 4.3 apg), then during his first two career starts vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Princeton (4.0 ppg, 2.5 apg). 4After averaging an average of 6 minutes off the bench in his first five appearances, Larry Lewis Jr has averaged 16 minutes the last three contests, including a season-high 22 minutes versus Seton Hall (Dec. 6). 4The ’Bows have 125 assists on 207 field goals (57.4%), a rate that ranks 82nd in the country according to kenpom.com. 4UH is 11-1 in the last two seasons when scoring 80 or more points and 10-0 when allowing less than 60 points.4UH had its third sellout in the last two years when UH hosted No. 5 North Carolina on Nov. 18. It was the 24th sellout all-time at the SSC. The first sellout ever was against North Carolina in 1994, the last meeting between the programs.

Allen’s Time To Shine: After playing limitedminutes in a three-year career at UCLA,Noah Allen transferred to Hawai‘i where hehas become UH’s go-to player. The6-7 senior wing currently leads the teamin scoring (14.8 ppg), rebounding (6.3 rpg) and steals (13), while ranking second in three-pointers made (14) and minutes (30.4 mpg). Allen has three 20-point performances: 21 points in the season opener versus SIUE (Nov. 11), 22 points versus North Carolina (Nov. 18), and a career-high 24 points in just 24 minutes vs. UH Hilo (Nov. 22). Allen also has two double-doubles (15 points, 11 reb. vs Florida Atlantic & 24 points, 10 reb. vs. UH Hilo). During the opening weekend, Allen was named to the Outrigger Resorts Rainbow Classic All-Tournament Team.

Cardiac Kids: Three of UH’s first six games came down to the final possession. UH was on the short-end of a 69-68 loss to SIUE in the season opener (Nov. 11). Noah Allen missed a three-pointer with seven seconds and after UH maintained possession with three seconds left, Sheriff Drammeh was stripped of the ball as time expired. UH was able to turn the table three nights later as Gibson Johnson powered in a bank shot from the low block with 6.3 seconds to give UH a 64-63 win over Florida Atlantic (Nov. 14). In a 65-63 loss to Troy (Nov. 25) UH had two opportunities in the final seconds to tie the game but Allen’s layup went hard off the glass and Johnson’s putback at the buzzer was also off the mark.

Calling All Nations: UH continues its trend as one of the most diverse teams in the country with players from five different states in four different time zones (California, Hawai‘i, Texas, Utah, and Wisconsin) and four foreign countries (Australia, Israel, Latvia, and Sweden).

Avea Signs With ’Bows: UH head coach Eran Ganot announced the signing of small forward Samuta Avea to a national letter of intent for the 2017-18 season. Avea, from Hau’ula, O’ahu, played his first two seasons at Kahuku High School, before transfer-ring to Bingham High School in Utah for his junior year. He’s rated as the top player out of Hawai’i and a three-start recruit by ESPN. 247Sports also ranks him as the No. 5 play-er out of Utah. Avea averaged 10.1 ppg and 7.0 rpg during his junior season at Bingham. He also added 2.0 apg, 1.6 spg, 1.7 bpg, and shot 47 percent from the floor. Avea helped Bingham to the Utah 5A state cham-pionship as the team finished with a stellar 24-2 overall record and an unblemished 12-0 conference mark. Avea has returned to Kahuku for his senior year after being a standout player on a squad that advanced to the state semifinals during his sophomore year. During that season he averaged 12 points per game and was one of the state’s top shot blockers.

Returning Production: With Mike Thomas redshirting this season, the Rainbow Warriors returned just three active players -- Zach Buscher, Sheriff Drammeh, and Brocke Stepteau -- who have seen court time. All three were freshmen last year and Drammeh was the only one who saw any significant time in 2015-16. Below is a breakdown of the returning production of this year’s team.

International Competition: Three of UH’s international players spent their summer training with their respective national teams. By July, all three converged to Helsinki, Finland, for the 2016 FIBA U20 European Championships. Incoming freshman Zigmars Raimo served as a reserve forward for a Latvian squad that finished an impressive sixth in the 16-team field. Ido Flaisher, a 6-10 center, was one of the youngest players in the tournament after being called up to the U20 Israeli national team. Meanwhile, Sheriff Drammeh had a strong showing for his native Sweden, finishing as one of the tournament’s top scorers at 17.6 ppg, while also adding 6.4 rpg and 4.2 apg.

HEAD COACH ERAN GANOT2ND SEASON, SWARTHMORE COLLEGE (2003)OVERALL RECORD: 32-11 BIG WEST RECORD 13-3

2015-16 BIG WEST COACH OF THE YEAR2015-16 RED AUERBACH COLLEGE COACH OF THE YEAR2015-16 COLLEGEINSIDER.COM JOE B. HALL AWARD

Hired in April 2015 at the age of 33, Eran Ganot became the second youngest head coach in the history of the University of Hawaii men’s basketball program and one of the youngest head coaches on the Division I landscape. Youth was certainly served during his inaugural campaign. Ganot led Hawai’i to a historic 2015-16 season as the Rainbow Warriors claimed both the Big West regular-season and tournament titles and recorded the most wins in school history (28). By season’s end, he not only led UH to its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2002, but also guided the team to an opening-round upset win over California for the program’s first-ever win in the Big Dance. Following the season, Ganot was recognized with a pair of nation-al coach of the year awards and was a finalist for several others. The native of Tenafly, N.J., claimed CollegeInsider.com’s Joe B. Hall Award, given to the top first-year head coach, as well as the Red Auerbach College Coach of the Year Award as selected by members of the Jewish Coaches Association (JCA). Ganot also claimed Big West Coach of the Year honors after enjoying the most successful inaugural season of any coach in the history of the conference. His first-year win total surpassed those of collegiate coaching giants Jerry Tarkainian and Lute Olson. Success at a mid-major is nothing new for Ganot. Prior to becom-ing UH’s head coach, he enjoyed two successful assistant coaching stints at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, Calif. During his latest five-year span at SMC (2010-15), the Gaels made two NCAA and three NIT appearances and won at least 21 games each season—includ-ing a three-year stretch with 25 or more wins. The Gaels captured two regular-season WCC titles; appeared in the WCC Tournament championship four times; and claimed two conference Players of the Year. Both players were coached in

Ganot’s position group, including Matthew Dellavedova, a member of the 2016 NBA champion Cleveland Cavaliers. As a volunteer assistant from 2003-06, the Gaels enjoyed the best three-year record in school history at the time and twice appeared in the WCC Championship game during his stay. The 2004-05 squad finished 25-9 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for just the fourth time in school history. It was in between his two stints at Saint Mary’s that Ganot first came to Hawai‘i. He started out as director of basketball operations under Riley Wallace in 2006 before earning a promotion to full-time assistant coach by then-coach Bob Nash after just one season. Seen as a rising star in the coaching ranks, Ganot stood out for his tireless work ethic, basketball insight and devotion to the UH pro-gram. Ganot earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and sociology/anthropology at Pennsylvania’s academically-elite Swarthmore College in 2003. He was a four-year letterman for the Division III school and twice served as team captain, as selected by his team-mates and coaches. A gym rat who played all five positions at Swarthmore, Ganot received the Dick Beppler Memorial Award his senior year, which recognized outstanding contribution to the men’s basketball team. Ganot lives in Honolulu with his wife, Barbea, and daughter, Zeza.
