Have you ever been the victim of a
Non-profit Board:
Either member or supporting staff?
@sdaparatus
Board/Executive Director relationships are at an all time low.
More and more people serving on Boards are disappointed with their involvement.
What on earth is going on?
@sdaparatus
But why is it so bad?
@sdaparatus
Legislation have raised the legal & fiduciary responsibilities of Boards and individual Directors.
Therefore, those considering joining a Board are taking that role seriously:
It is the law!
@sdaparatus
Charities want to recruiting high-potential members.
The very nature of those people causes them to question and make demands.
This often rubs the staff person the wrong way.
Organizations want smart people
@sdaparatus
The CEO/ED is in fact the Board’s employee. YES … Employee!
Boards and CEO/ED’s are not truly aware of that this means there is an employee/employer relationship.
Somebody has to be the Boss
@sdaparatus
The ED/CEO is the founder or ‘heart’ of the organization so when the Board asks questions or challenges things become personal
… emotions take over and problems ensue.
But it’s my baby
@sdaparatus
The Point?
The Point?
@sdaparatus
Boards should be considered the same as any team of the organization and be given clear goals and objectives
Define clear rolls and objectives
@sdaparatus
The ED/CEO needs to understand that they are an important part of the organization but they are not the ‘Owner’.
Define clear rolls and objectives
- UP!
@sdaparatus
The Board must understand that they are the ED/CEO’s boss and must act as such.
Boards have, sometimes, treated the ED/CEO is a manner that would never fly in the Board Members place of employment.
If you want to be the Boss, be a good boss
@sdaparatus
to ensure High performance the Board should maintain a laser like focus on the following aspects: The Right RoleThe Right PeopleThe Right AgendaThe Right InformationThe Right Culture
Focus on the Right Work!
