Not just advice, though. A commandment: a commandment to establish a rhythm of

life that embraces regular rest from the thrill of creativity, from the enjoyment of

skills, from the fruit of growth, from the celebration of achievement (Exodus 20:8-11). It’s not that work is bad. There was nothing wrong with the work that God did. It

was all very good and enjoyable (Genesis 1:31). But God rested.

Rest is not merely the ending of activity, or finishing our work. Rest is much more than putting down our tools, hanging up our boots and collapsing into our comfy

chairs at the end of the week. It is possible to cease our labour and never find a

place of rest. Rest is way beyond stopping.

Rest is more than a pleasant distraction. It is more than pottering in the garden, or getting lost in an exciting book. Rest exceeds great music, breath-taking scenery or

the latest in computer gaming technology.

Rest is a discovery. The discovery of a presence. The presence of One who, from the beginning of time,

has been waiting for our attention. The One who said to Moses “My presence will go with you and I shall give you rest” (Exodus 33:14). The One in whose presence we

find absolute security and sufficient grace no matter what storms we face, as Noah

(whose name means “rest”) discovered (Genesis 7). The One to whom Jesus lead his disciples from the constant pressures of life to find rest (Mark 6:31) – and still does.

As you make time for relaxation and recharging your batteries over this holiday

season, may you rediscover the joy of the transforming presence of our Heavenly

Father. The Psalmists testify that it is in His glorious presence where refuge and shelter, vindication and strength, and light and direction may be found in this life.

Such things are a foretaste of our ultimate destiny, in the eternal presence of the saving One with whom we will rest forever.

May you (and I) discover the joy of rest this summer!

"The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth in order to

strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him."

2Chron 16:9 • Thank the Lord that the truth

is so amazing that the Lord of

the universe wants an intimate

relationship with each of us and that he responds to our

prayers and our faith in Him. • Pray for all the summer

activities: Soul Survivor, Kids

Club, Keswick Convention etc.

and that we will be refreshed and encouraged in our walk

with Jesus as we take time out from the usual pattern of life,

during the holidays.

• Pray for our pastors and

elders, bless them, encourage them in their work for us and

for God's Kingdom

• Pray for the work of IMAGE:

that as Christine heads up this so-important work, and as her

team take a break for the summer, that they are

all encouraged and envisioned

and that new volunteer workers are found as the work

expands. • Pray for Syria, as they go

through this truly tragic self-destructive time: pray for

peaceful solutions and God's mercy on the country.

“I can just imagine Satan gathering all the demons in hell and

discussing what they can do to destroy Christians.

And Satan says, 'Keep them from praying. Because no matter what

else they do, if they don't pray, we can beat them every time. But if

they learn how to pray, they'll beat us every time. Keep them from

praying.'“ Dr. Sidlow Baxter

The Countdown to Kids Club has started. From 5th to 9th of August MEC will become the Space Academy. The Captain, Space Commander and Buzz Brain will lead us through the week. Super Nova will keep us all super fit and we will sing and dance along with The Transporters band. The Scripture Union have based the teaching for the week on the book of Daniel and it promises to be lots of fun. Right from ‘blast off’ on Monday morning to ‘touch down’ on Friday evening at the family barbeque. Of course putting on a kids summer holiday club requires a lot of non-kids to make it work. We need people to be Presenters, drama team members, group leaders, catering team members, registration team members, craft team members, dance leaders and band members. If you have been a regular helper in previous years we will be more than happy to have you along again. If you have never helped before but have a heart for the children in our area and have the time and energy to help put this week together, please speak to one of the team. You don’t have to be a trained teacher or have previous experience, there will be a job tailor made for you! All we ask is that you can be with us from 9 to 1 every day that week and that you like having fun. If you want to know more, please speak to one of the team. Stephen Winfield, Debs Fidler, Vicky Lee, Martyn Catterall, Alan Smith and

Margaret Howarth.

Summer Kids Club 2013

Come Walking on July 6th

Image is currently facing the loss of £17,000 in funding. This has resulted in the immediate closure of Precious Families and the loss of some key positions. We are looking for immediate help in three ways:

1 Prayer for God's direction as we move forward and for peace and provision for all those affected by the changes. We are still hoping to deliver a service to our Precious

Families clients through the support work. 2 Finance. If God has laid this work on your heart, please consider giving financially to

us. Small, regular donations are the most reliable form of income. We are losing £17,000 from just 3 sources - it would be best replaced by 100 people giving £15 per

month so that we can avoid this kind of crisis (you can donate online at www.imagenet.org.uk).

3 Volunteers. If the work is to continue effectively, we need to recruit more volunteers immediately into two areas - the office work (reception and admin) and the support

work (organising donations and distributing baby clothes and equipment to clients).

Please contact me or the image office (0161 273 8090, e-mail: [email protected]) if you can help in any way.

At the beginning of the year I was looking at Psalm 33:19 and sensing that God was saying He would keep image 'alive in famine', though I had no idea of what was coming. Please stand with us on verses 20-22: 'We wait in hope for the Lord; He is our help and

shield. In Him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in His holy name. May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope in You.' Thank you.

Christine

Our next walk will start from Brabyn’s park in Marple Bridge,

Meeting at 10 am in the car park next to the Midland pub, it will be another 5 ‘country’ miles. Usual footwear and butties required. For more details please grab my ear.

On Monday 17th June we opened the doors of MEC for the grand opening of Mottram Monday Matinees. The leaflets had gone out around Mottram, the posters were all around Longdendale, the church was adorned in vintage decoration and we were ready with bated breath (and cake) wondering who might arrive. By 2.30 we had over 30

visitors sitting around the

tables enjoying

the games,

conversation and delicious refreshments. We were

then treated to some in-house entertainment from

some familiar faces: 'Joke

of the week' by the well known funnyman John

Carruthers, some local history and a regional

dialect poem from the lovely Margaret Howarth

and a wartime sing-a-long

by our favourite crooner, Mark Lee. The atmosphere was lovely and visitors fed

back that they had received a very warm

and loving welcome. We

plan to run a similar format from week to

week and the potential to grow and have a lot

of fun with the

entertainment is huge.

A great big thank you to all who volunteered their time to serve and make it work, you did a 'spiffing' job!

Please continue to pray that God will have His hand of blessing on this work and that

as relationships grow, there will be plenty of

opportunities to minister

God's love to our local community.

If you feel in any way you

could contribute to the

work (whether set up/pack down, serving drinks/

cakes, washing up, mingling or even having a slot in our

entertainment section), please talk to Liz Benstead or Debs Fidler

Having spent the last couple of months training for the Manchester 10k and feeling quite prepared and ready for it, not expecting any problems apart from a painful foot which I’d ‘voltaroled’*. I was looking forward to a fun race and celebratory

barbeque afterwards. The sun was shining too which was a

bonus!

The run was going fine up to the 8k marker when I remember looking at my watch thinking I’ve nearly done it now and estimating my finish time, next thing I knew I was on the floor

and couldn’t stand up, my legs had turned to jelly.

Someone carried me to the side of the road, gave me an energy drink and told the first

aiders “I will stay with her”. After sitting with me a while and realising I still couldn’t stand without help they said “lets get you to the end, I’m not going to leave you”, supported me

and walked with me the last 2k to the finish line which took over half an hour. Even then they stayed with me until we found Rod which literally was going the extra mile.

I’ve been thinking about the race we are in as Christians and although we all have our own race to run, how important it is to help one another with theirs. Any of us can stumble, fall or even collapse when we least expect it, sometimes the race is draining and its easy to become discouraged and even quit, lets support one another, lift one

another up and carry each other if necessary, so we ALL get over the finish line. Sue

*Voltarol is a brand of painkiller –other painkillers are available! Ed.

And as the mist is lifting More detail can I see

Even a touch of colour Though faded initially

I walk on through the fog Knowing the path is there

Knowing but not seeing Only yards ahead are clear

But then a voice behind me

Whispers in my ear The experience of Isaiah

Long past but yet so near

"This is the way walk in it Stray neither right nor left"

For left there is a deadly drop The right, an impenetrable cleft

The sweat soaked shirt clung to my back

This is no easy road And why did I set off on my walk

Carrying such a heavy load?

I put down my bag, take off my coat My legs they soon revive

Then Hebrews 12 comes to my mind Saying how we all should survive.

Church Weekend Away 9th-11th May 2014 – Advance Notice!

You are cordially invited to join in a weekend of fun and games, good food, building friendships, worship and teaching around a

biblical theme in the beauty of the Shropshire countryside.

Keep the time free by booking it in your diary, smartphone, IPAD or PC: from late afternoon Friday 9th May to the afternoon of Sunday 11th May 2014.

See you there!

Hebrews 12:1-3 NIV Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked

out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose

heart. Alan Kendrick

You are not an accident. Here is something I read recently and would like to share

with everyone

“You are not an accident. Your parents may not have planned you, but God did. He wanted you alive and created you for a purpose. Focusing on yourself will never reveal your purpose.

You were made by God and for God, and until you understand that, life will never make sense. Only in God do

we discover our origin, our identity, our meaning, our purpose, our significance and our destiny”.

Dr Rick Warren, author of ‘The purpose-driven life’. Neil Drake
