HARTLEY WINTNEY FOOTBALL CLUB FOUNDED 1897
MEMBERS OF THE COMBINED COUNTIES FOOTBALL LEAGUE;
SUBURBAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE; THE ALDERSHOT & DISTRICT
FOOTBALL LEAGUE & THE SOUTHERN YOUTH LEAGUE.
AFFILIATED TO THE HAMPSHIRE FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION
Hartley Wintney Football Club was founded in 1897. The Club originally played
in an area situated at Causeway Farm, which is not too far from our present HQ
and was adjacent to the golf and cricket clubs.
From stories told by the older members and from ancient records, it appeared
that the village side competed and showed well against local opposition. The
facilities were not, however, of the standards acceptable today. A horse trough
or the pond was the only way to remove the heavy mud left from the sub-
standard pitch.
In 1953, the Club moved to its present ground in Green Lane, known as the Me-
morial Ground. A pavilion was erected and the team competed in the Basing-
stoke league before joining the Aldershot league.
In 1973, Glynn Howells was appointed manager and, with a further influx of
players, HWFC was put firmly on the local footballing map. In Glynn’s six year
reign he steered the Club to three successive Aldershot Senior League titles
and, on a night to remember, to success in the Aldershot Senior Cup.
In 1975, the facilities were upgraded with a bar being incorporated in the pavil-
ion, and the playing strength was also improved. In the 1978/79 season, after
several seasons in the Aldershot League, Hartley applied to join the Combined
Counties league. After the first couple of seasons in the CCFL, Hartley ap-
pointed Ian Bedford as manager. A further influx of senior players gave Hartley
the success they deserved. Within the first three years of Ian’s reign, Hartley
won the league title (season 82/83), Aldershot Senior Cup (80/81), and the
George Allen Cup (81/82). They also finished runners-up in the league (80/81)
and runners-up in the Aldershot Senior Cup (81/82).
During this period a new clubhouse was built and was opened by Peter Osgood.
These facilities are ranked as one of the best in the league. David Willoughby,
the then secretary/treasurer, and Bill Mitchell, spent exceptional hours in the
embryonic stages of this venture.
The Club have since strived to maintain their senior status, installing floodlights
and a 113 seater stand, and the Club is indebted to the band of volunteer work-
ers who keep the Club afloat.

WELCOME TO HARTLEY WINTNEY F.C.
2 Awarded Combined Counties League Best Match Day Programme in Div 1, 2011-12
Good evening ladies and gentlemen
and welcome to the Memorial Ground
for this Cherry Red Records Premier
Division fixture.
Our opponents this evening are Guern-
sey FC and to all their players, support-
ers and officials we extend a warm wel-
come and hope they enjoy their short
stay with us today.
Our visitors today are currently third in
the league with 31 points from twelve
games played. They have games in
hand on both Badshot Lea and Egham
that, should they win them, would see
them comfortably top the table.
GUERNSEY’S RECENT RESULTS

27 Oct a Wembley 0-2
20 Oct H Bedfont Sports 5-2
13 Oct a Whyteleafe (CUP) 2-3
29 Sep a Chessington & Hook 1-4
25 Sep a Sandhurst Town 0-2
Tonight's fixture has been rearranged as
a result of Guernsey's progress in the
FA Vase. They have reached the second
round where they have an away fixture
on 17 November at Erith. We wish them
well for that fixture but hope they have
an off night tonight!
We are still looking for our first win
under the new management regime but
we are beginning to show signs that we
are gelling as a team. Saturday's defeat
at Horley saw us play some decent stuff
but we conceded a couple of soft goals
which cost us dearly. Here's hoping we
can continue our improvement tonight.
The Reserves lost 3-2 at home to Berk-
hamsted on Saturday and the A Team
progressed in the Hants Cup with a 2-1
win against Lyndhurst Reserves.
Please get behind the team tonight.
Your encouragement is a great boost.
They are trying to turn things round and
just need that bit of luck.
Come on the ROW!

DILLS FROM THE DUGOUT
Good evening everyone, welcome to
Hartley Wintney football club and
thank you for coming to support us.
In the last week there has been a major
difference in our team after losing 4-1
to Windsor in a frustrat-
ing, difficult game. I felt if
we finished our chances in
the first 20 minutes we
would have won the game
comfortably. Unfortu-
nately we didn't and as we
all know in football if you
don't take your chances
you get punished. With
two silly fouls in the box
they won two penalties.
We got ourselves back
into the game at 2-1 but
whilst pushing for the
equaliser we conceded two more
sloppy goals. However, after this game
me, Jason and Joe went to work on the
lads Tuesday at training, friendly Thurs-
day and Horley Town FC Saturday. The
boys had a tough week but have done
really well. We saw a huge improve-
ment Saturday against Horley Town.
The lads were like a different team; we
passed the ball brilliantly, had great
movement, had 70% of possession and
played Horley Town off the park. We
worked so hard as a team and every-
one really enjoyed the game.
After 2 silly mistakes, we ended up go-
ing in at half time 2-1 down, with Ryan
Stephens scoring once
again. We did not deserve to be losing
- it was some of the best football I have
seen in a long time and I'm sure the
fans who were there would agree. The
second half we started superbly and
immediately had
chances. Ryan
Stephens rounded the
keeper but just went a
bit too far and was
unlucky. Ryan then
turned provider and
with a great whipped
ball into the box, Shane
Hollamby arrived to
meet the ball from six
yards out but his
header just sneaked
wide of the post. Su-
perb football. Dan
Brownlie then went close with a good
volley, hitting the outside of the post.
Ryan then had a volley flying into the
top corner saved by the keeper. Horley
hardly touched the ball the whole
game. Anyone would have thought we
were 7th place and they were bottom.
I’m not one to be harsh to referees as I
wouldn’t like that job myself, but this
ref made two shocking decisions. Ryan
rounded a player in the box and the
right-back defending slipped to the
ground. As Ryan ran passed him he
handled the ball to stop Ryan getting
towards goal. The referee didn’t give a

penalty and I have no idea why. The
second decision was a foul from be-
hind on Dan Brownlie, a blatant pen-
alty. In the last twenty minutes we
pushed for an equaliser, desperately
trying and working so hard that unfor-
tunately Horley caught us on the
break and scored with one of their
few attacks on our goal, and we
ended up losing 3-1. Overall we
played such good football. We had
70% of possession, had four or five
easy chances to win the game com-
fortably, and worked so hard as a
team right till the end. At 2-1 down
we should have punished them and
finished winning 4-2. I am so proud of
the lads and in the space of seven
days we have improved incredibly.
Tonight's game will be another tough
test. I watched Guernsey play last
week and they are a fantastic team.
All I ask from my players is to give
100% and to do their best. Guernsey
drew with Horley Town last week and
seeing us play Horley off the park Sat-
urday gives me good hope for getting
something from the game tonight.
We are looking forward to the next
month and getting some points on the
board. Enjoy the game and please
support our team in the tough test
tonight. COME ON HARTLEY!

Dan Brownlie's good allround performance in midfield, capped by a very
well taken goal as he chipped the ball over the Windsor ‘keeper, was

ABOUT OUR VISITORS TODAY
GUERNSEY F.C. Founded 2011
Guernsey Football Club was formed in
2011 to offer the island's elite football-
ers the opportunity to progress and
test themselves on a regular basis out-
side of the Channel Islands. The pro-
posal to establish the club
and seek to join the English
national league pyramid
system was developed by
the Guernsey Football Asso-
ciation in an attempt to fur-
ther advance development
opportunities for the is-
land's current and future
players by playing at higher
levels on a regular basis.
We are an independent,
community amateur football club
which plays in the Combined Counties
League Premier Division at step 5 on
English football's non-league pyramid
system. The club is owned and run for
the benefit of the local Guernsey com-
munity and it plays its home games at
the Footes Lane Stadium.
The club's vision is to create, develop
and maintain a sustainable, successful,
financially viable, democratic football
club that creates and maintains real
and lasting benefits to its members and

the local Guernsey community. We are
a registered charity and will remain a
non-profit organisation with any finan-
cial surpluses being re-invested for the
future viability of the club and hence
the benefit of the local
community. All club
officials and staff are
volunteers.
The initial idea to estab-
lish Guernsey FC was
developed during the
2009/10 season when
Guernsey's Senior
County Division One
representative side en-
joyed a successful run in
the FA National League System Cup (for
league representative sides at step 7 on
the non-league pyramid system and
below, and since renamed the FA Inter-
League Cup) culminating in Guernsey
beating the Liverpool County Premier
League 5-2 in the final in May 2010.
Along the way, Guernsey defeated rep-
resentative sides from the Kent County
Premier League, the Northampton Pre-
mier League, the Southern Amateur
League, the Hertfordshire Premier
League, and the Dorset Premier League.
The final was held in Guernsey in front

ABOUT OUR VISITORS: GUERNSEY FC
of a crowd of over 2,500 and was the
first time ever that the FA had allowed
one of its competition finals to be held
outside of the UK mainland.
Following a 1-0 victory over Jersey to
reclaim the Muratti Vase in May 2010,
the prize for winning the FA NLS Cup
for this same squad of players was to
represent England in the UEFA Regions
Cup in Croatia in September 2010. This
was a fantastic experience for the play-
ers and coaching and medical staff and,
although Guernsey enjoyed mixed for-
tunes by beating Wales, drawing with
hosts Croatia and losing to group win-
ners Turkey, it provided football at a
higher standard, was very motivational
and gave our players a great desire to
improve further and to play more regu-
larly at higher levels.
Over the course of the following few
months, the club's founding directors,
Steve Dewsnip and Mark Le Tissier,
received encouragement from the
Football Association, the Guernsey FA,
the Combined Counties League (which
we were introduced to by the FA), our
official main club sponsor Sportingbet,
the island's government (the States of
Guernsey) and the island's local foot-
ball community to develop our plans
for the new club further and were de-
lighted when the member clubs of the
Combined Counties League voted by a
significant majority on 20 June 2011 to
allow Guernsey FC to join division one
of their league.
Although our club is very young, foot-
ball in Guernsey has a long history dat-
ing back to 1893 when the Guernsey FA
was established and since then has pro-
duced several players who have graced
the highest levels of the English profes-
sional game, including Bill Spurdle
(Manchester City), Richard Le Flem
(Nottingham Forest & England U23),
Ron Farmer (Coventry City), Len Duque-
min (Tottenham Hotspur) and, more
recently and more famously, our Club
President Matt Le Tissier (Southampton
& England).
Saturday 6th August 2011 was a historic
day for Guernsey FC and the island in
general when the club played its inau-
gural game at Footes Lane against
Knaphill FC in the Combined Counties
League Division One. That historic day
turned into an historic season with the
club winning the league title, having
lost only 2 of its 34 league matches,
with a 7-1 win against 2nd placed Bed-
font Sports FC in front of 2,143 support-
ers at Footes Lane in late March 2012
and then going on to secure the double
in its first season by winning the Com-
bined Counties Premier Challenge Cup
following a 2-0 victory after extra-time
over Premier Division side Colliers
Wood United FC.

HARTLEY WINTNEY RESERVE TEAM
A young reserve side
lost 3-2 to an equally
youthful Berkhamsted
side on Saturday (3rd
Nov). We were still in
the changing rooms
when Berkhamsted
took the lead after just 3 minutes. A
through ball caught our defence half asleep
for their striker to run through and slip the
ball past our keeper. There were (perhaps
justifiably) calls for offside, but our defence
was flat footed and square, so we can't
blame the officials for our downfall. The
rest of the half was fairly even - I felt we
had more possession but they had the
clearer chances, Alex Beeson in our goal
making two fantastic saves to keep us in
the game at half time.
The second half, especially the last 25 min-
utes, was very positive. In training our fo-
cus recently has been movement off the
ball and third person runs. Throughout the
game we saw this in patches, but the last
20 minutes we really started to think about
our runs, how to create space not only for
ourselves but for others as well. We got
back to 3-2, with about 10 minutes to go,
from good work from two of our 16 year
olds. Good combination play down the
right resulted in James Dickinson crossing
for Matt Lowe to head in at the far post.
The last few minutes, our young side threw
the kitchen sink at them (for want of a bet-
ter phrase). However, creating overloads in
the opposition’s final third leaves you vul-
nerable to counter attacks, and Alex
Beeson was superb in our
goal to keep it 3-2. However,
football is an invasion sport. Our aim
is to invade the opposition’s goal,
whilst, through organisation, protect
ours. In the reserves we are making
strides towards achieving the first
part of this statement, our next aim
will be to work on our defence over
the coming weeks.
It’s easy to dismiss the reserves
with a brief glance at the table, but
reserve team football at this level is
all about development and bringing
through young players so that one
day they can represent the club at
first team level. At Hartley, I feel we
will achieve this goal. Our squad on
Saturday featured 8 players aged
just 16 / 17 years old. To be gaining
experience at this level so early in
their football life can do nothing but
give them the best chance of
progressing to the first team, and
beyond, when they get that little bit
older.
If you get chance to watch our side
regularly, take a minute to watch
some of our youngsters, compare
them to a month ago, and I'm sure
you'll agree we're heading in the
right direction. Finally from me,
good luck to the first team tonight :)

WHO IS GARY CONKER?
Gary Conker is the third highest paid player in the
world. Strange, as he is quite an illusive, mystical crea-
ture, basically because nobody has ever seen him
play. Rumours suggest that he will only play on days
where Eamon Holmes presents ‘This Morning’.
Lionel Messi once said that God had asked him to play
Football and entertain the world. Gary Conker re-
sponded by saying that he had never asked Messi to
entertain anyone.
The unfortunate thing is Gary Conker, unfortunately,
does not exist. However, if you ask Sam Nicholls
(player profile) he will still claim that he does.

YOUTH TEAM ROUND-UP
The Youth Team Staff; Paul Dale (Head
Coach), Paul Bowen and Graham Smith
extend a warm welcome to all. The
development of youth talent is funda-
mental to the success of any club at any
level. Looking at the development of
the youth players
through the summer, I
have absolutely no
doubt we are nurturing
Hartley 1st team players
of the future. Taking the
next step is always a
daunting one; what we,
the youth team staff,
has to offer is the plat-
form for player develop-
ment to the next level.
The Youth squad has that platform;
from the current incumbents, several
have already taken the next step on the
football ladder. Connor Caris, Liam
Welch, Billy McKay and Paul Roche
have featured for the Reserves already.
Michael Floyd, Shaun Spence, Ryan
Latter, Ryan Corbett, Mark Taylor and
Aaron Richardson have featured for the
1st Team. Congratulations should be
extended to all these lads for acquitting
themselves admirably at the next level.
We have a young side underpinned
with some talented 17 year
olds. Along with the 1st and
Reserve team debutants, the
youth can look to Curtis Raw-
cliffe and Kyle Wurst for lead-
ership and ability. Our aim for
this season is to continue the
good work seen towards the
end of last season. Develop
and play exciting attacking
football that will see us com-
pete for a place at the league
summit come April. Not forgetting the
next step; nurturing ability, playing with
pride and not being afraid of the chal-
lenge set to play at the next level.
UPDATE: 22 Oct 2012
Good afternoon and thank you for tak-
ing the time to catch up with the Youth
Team. Hartley Wintney Youth play in
the Southern Youth Floodlight League,
home games Thursday nights, and in
the North East Hants League on Sun-
days - see the website Youth section for

played 4 games, with mixed results in
both. In the Southern League, I have to
say luck hasn't been on our side. Away

become integral to that setup.
The Youth have suffered more than
most with injury, Paul Roach and Luke

Charlie Peter and Rob Deans from mus-
cular problems. Six key players missing
from the starting line-up poses prob-
lems before the first whistle. No ex-
cuses, we have a big squad and al-
though these lads are fantastic young
footballers, we have quality chomping
at the bit for their chance.
Graham, Paul and I wish Paul and Luke
speedy recoveries from their leg breaks
and hope to see them back in training
before Christmas. The challenge was
always to compete towards a top 4
finish in both leagues. Although it is still
early days in what will be a long and
challenging season, the Youth Team
staff believe we are on track and have
the players to realise this aspiration.
The Youth are placed sixth in the mid-
week and first in the Sunday leagues;
injuries permitting and a little more
luck in front of goal, we will remain on
track. I believe we play good attacking
football and are worth watching.

the picture. Hartley had the ball in the
net on four occasions - Liam, Austin,
Ryan C and Shaun saw each of their
efforts cancelled out for some infringe-
ment that only the referee saw. On top
of that, Luke and Austin hit the wood-
work in a game that still haunts and
confuses me. How we came away with-
out at least a point I will never know.
The Farnham game followed pretty
much the same theme. We had the
better chances to go in front, Liam
again hitting the post after being re-
leased by a great through ball from
Paris. This game ended 3-1 in Farn-
ham's favour; they scored in the dying
minutes on the counter from Hartley
pressing for the equaliser.
In the Sunday league we started the
campaign with a 3-2 defeat. From that
we have gone on to win three games
on the spin, scoring 15 and only con-
ceding 3. I accept this league may have
slightly weaker teams than the mid-
week one. However, the personnel
within the leagues are largely the same.
We now need to carry some of that
Sunday form into the midweek games.
The Youth section prides itself on nur-
turing young players to compete at the
next level. This ethos is illustrated with
16, 17 and 18 year-olds playing regu-
larly in the Reserves, Mat Partlow,
Jacob Exton and Liam Welch; and in the

LAUGH-TIME TEAM TALK
Stop kids knocking at your door on
Halloween night...
...dreadfully poor taste but funny,
you have to admit.
I went to the cemetery yes-
terday to lay some flowers
on a grave. As I was standing
there I noticed four grave
diggers walking about with a
coffin. Three hours later and
they're still walking about
with it.
I thought to myself, they've
lost the plot…
My daughter asked me for a
pet spider for her birthday,
so I went to our local pet
shop and they were £70!
"Blow this," I thought,
"I can get one cheaper off
the web."
I was at a cash point yester-
day when a little old lady
asked if I could check her
balance, so I pushed her
over.

The wife has been missing a week
now. Police said to prepare for
the worst.
So I have been to the charity shop
to get all her clothes back.
I woke up last night to find the
ghost of Gloria Gaynor standing
at the foot of my bed.
At first I was afraid...then I was
petrified.
Statistically, 6 out of 7 dwarves
are not happy.

KOB’S KOLUMN
IN OUR FIRST EVER FA YOUTH CUP
TIE, THE LADS DID US PROUD!
Farnborough Academy 2
Hartley Wintney U18 1 FA Youth Cup Preliminary Round
Wednesday 5 September 2012
Club history was made last
month when Hartley Wintney
FC played in the FA Youth Cup
for the first time, and it was a
terrific effort from the lads
against a very accomplished
Farnborough academy side. The
strong, impressive home side
created a lot of chances but
found Ryan Latter in superb
form, pulling off at least half a dozen
great saves, and showing good handling
and kicking the whole game. At the
other end, especially second half as we
worked the ball better through midfield
and shut them down higher up the
pitch, we looked like we could cause a
real upset.
Luke Neller's worldy free kick was
saved superbly by the finger tips of
Farnborough keeper Sam Bersey, and
then a late penalty claim... to me it
looked well inside and I for all the
world assumed he was pointing to the
spot when he gave the foul, but then
he placed the ball on the edge of the
box. We didn't feel the Ref had a ca-
reer-crowning game that night, but
that’s football. The free-kick was well
saved and the opportunity lost.
Before that, Hartley had dragged them-
selves back into the game in the second
half after going a goal down late in the
first, and their endeavours were re-
warded when, on 60 mins, Ryan Cor-
bett powered in a header to
make things even. But as the
game went on, the lads tired and
several were cramping up, un-
derstandably, and they were
undone shortly after the penalty
incident, at the very end of the
game, by a through ball to the
substitute ‘borough forward Eb
Isiakpona, and this time he gave
Ryan no chance and tucked it into the
corner.
It was a very cruel time to lose the
game but that was a performance to be
proud of. Well done Paul and the rest
of the coaching staff, and of course to
all the lads. You made us all proud.

KOB’S FA CUP 2011-2012 REVIEW
The FA Cup is the great com-
petition that it is, known and loved
around the world, not least because it
provides teams with the chance to
punch well above their weight and
taste success on a stage
somewhat elevated from
their usual league status.
This is perhaps especially
true for amateur clubs,
and every season brings
stories of success that
will live long in the mem-
ory of players and fans of
particular clubs. For Hart-
ley Wintney, the FA Cup
of season 2011-12 was
one such special time.
We had started our
league season with a
midweek 2-2 draw at
home to the eventual runaway Division
One champions, Guernsey FC, playing
their first competitive game on the UK
mainland. We found ourselves trailing
2-1 going into the final few minutes
before captain Martin Williams stepped
up to strike a free-kick into the net. This
was followed by a 3-3 home draw with
Spelthorne Sports before our foray into
the season's FA Cup, with an Extra Pre-
liminary round tie at Petersfield Town.
It was a game I missed, as I was away
on holiday and only had the Chairman’s
SMS text messages to satisfy my des-
perate need to know how we were
doing. Having taken a 2-0 lead we let
our opponents back into the game and I
waited anxiously for the phone to
chime with news of an equaliser or a
third goal that would have made it safe.
In the end we held out for
a 2-1 win, setting up an
away tie at Alresford in the
Preliminary round.
Ahead of the Alresford
trip, we notched up league
wins against Knaphill,
Bookham and put nine
goals passed Frimley
Green, Dean Peltohaka
scoring four that day. Our
league form was shaping
up well but who would
have imagined our FA Cup
run, especially 15 minutes
in to our game at Alresford Town on
September 3rd.
Let's be honest, the lads had left their
heads in the dressing room and we
could have very easily been four down
after 20 minutes. Lee Allen made three
one-on-one saves with his feet and I
still cannot believe the young Alresford
player missing from 6 yards after
rounding three defenders and Lee Allen
and then, off balance, managing to hit
the post, and then for the ball to roll
away rather than back across the goal.
They say you need luck in the Cup - we
had a bag full at Alresford in the first 20
that day.

HARTLEY WINTNEY : FA CUP 2011-12
It looked like we'd be in for a long and
fruitless afternoon, but going forward
we looked strong. Gradually we started
to keep the ball and play in their half. A
cross is lofted in to our host's penalty
box and Ryan Stephens, back to goal,
heads a looping
ball backwards,
over the keeper
and in. If the home
side were taken by
surprise by that,
they must have
been in shock
shortly afterwards
when Jermaine
Hamilton picked
up a pass on the
left, cut inside the
defender and shot
low and hard from
the edge of the
box into the far
corner. I’ll always
remember Jer-
maine coming over
to the touchline to
celebrate his goal
with me even before his own team
mates… thanks for my loud and persis-
tent support I believe! We went in at
the break 2-0 up and Alresford must
have wondered what on earth had just
happened.
Chairman Luke Mullen and I were
standing together as the second half
started, both of us muttering how we
needed to keep it tight, espe-
cially at the start... and of course we
didn't and Alresford nicked a goal back.
We quietly feared the worst. They kept
coming at us but by now our defence
was looking a lot more solid, and we

home to Bashley.
still looked dangerous on the break as
Alresford threw more players forward.
On came Ben Dillon and Dan Brownlie
and Dills became the destroyer, firstly
with a strong run through the middle

culminating in a shot the
keeper could only parry and
Dan was there before anyone else to
steer the ball home. Ben then rounded
off an amazing 4-1 win after another
incisive counter-attack. I believe our
win at Alresford was the base for the
belief the team showed in subsequent
big games. It all started there.
Our FA Cup First Qualifying round game
at home to mighty Bashley from the
Southern Premier was coming up the
following Saturday, but before that we
had a midweek Hampshire Senior Cup
First Round match against Team Solent.
It was a potentially tricky fixture but
the lads played some great football
from the off, running out 7-2 winners
and later being awarded 'Team of the
Round' for the performance by Hamp-
shire FA.
And so came the day of perhaps the
club’s biggest ever game to that point,
on 17th September 2011 in the FA Cup
at home to Bashley, a club with its own
impressive cup history. Bashley struck
me as a very professional outfit on and
off the park. Clearly they would have
been confident of a comfortable win.
That confidence visibly ebbed away out
on the pitch as they realised they were
in a real game. It was one of the most
committed, gritty performances I've
seen from a team I've been supporting.
We defended with our lives, and when
we attacked we did so with a real
threat. Yes, we did enjoy a bit of good
fortune when Bashley missed a great
early chance, but this was nothing like
the Alresford game. We were superb
from start to finish and ended the
stronger, and when Dan Brownlie raced
down the right - with a replay looking
on the cards - and shot across the
keeper and just inside the far post,
well, it's one of the best moments I've
had watching 'my' team play. We had
turned the tables on a team well
known for causing cup upsets. An
amazing win and well deserved on the
day, setting up another home tie in the
second qualifying round against Bide-
ford, also from the Southern league.
By now the games were coming thick
and fast and we had two other cup
games to play before the Bideford en-
counter. After the efforts of the team
against Bashley, the decision to rest
players in the Aldershot Senior Cup
defeat at home to Yateley Green was
fully vindicated in the game against
Petersfield Town in the second qualify-
ing round of the FA Vase. The lads were
superb, different class, and won 5-1. It
took us into the Bideford game full of
confidence, but perhaps also with a
degree of expectation that wasn’t
there in the game against Bashley, in
which we had clearly been the rank
outsiders.
The cup game against Bideford AFC on
October 1st was in some ways a bigger
test for us than even the Bashley game.
Although they played a level below

FA CUP 2011-2012 REVIEW
Bashley, Bideford had been on a good
run in the league and were up near the
top. Any chance of catching them by
surprise, as perhaps was in part the
case with Bashley, was extremely
unlikely after our previous win put us
'on the radar', and they
brought a good number of sup-
porters with them from the
south west in confident mood.
We weren't at our best in the
first half. We had trouble get-
ting the ball out of our half,
with a big gap opening in our
midfield as we were forced
deeper, and our strikers unable
to get hold of it to give our
defence a breather. We rode
our luck when Bideford missed
a couple of good chances but
they eventually scored late in
the first half. We were now up
against an in-form team from two lev-
els above us, one down and not on our
game. My guess is that Bideford went
in at half time expecting to come out
and steamroller us, probably wonder-
ing what all the fuss had been about
this little village side in Hampshire.
But in the second half we turned up.
Bideford were now up against the 'real'
Hartley Wintney FC and it seemed to
me that they weren't ready for it. There
were less gaps and we looked stronger,
while our visitors continued to dispute
decisions, which couldn't have helped
their focus. We, on the other hand,
looked focussed and deter-
mined. The equaliser came on
55 minutes. The ball was headed up
high by one of the Bideford central de-
fenders and was dropping some way
behind him. As Jermaine Hamilton

Newcombe, Chris Paterson and Darryl
Bloxham as the Bashley game ends.
moved at pace towards what seemed a
lost cause as the ball looked to be
heading over the goal line, the keeper
came to close off what appeared to be
an impossible angle. Talking with Jer-
maine afterwards, he was aware that
nobody was up with him and felt he
could only have a go on the half volley.
From the acutest of angles he managed
to thread the ball between the onrush-
ing keeper and near post. I still don't
know how he scored from there.

HARTLEY WINTNEY : FA CUP 2011-2012
Lifted by the goal, the home
side's confidence swept
them forward and the winner came just
5 minutes later. Ryan Stephens set off
on one of his jinking runs into the box
and, as the keeper came out, Ryan
swivelled to keep the ball from his
grasp and was taken down. Up stepped
the coolest man in the ground, Jer-
maine Hamilton, to score em-
phatically from the spot.
Hartley went on to hit the wood-
work twice after that. A superb
win and afterwards both Jer-
maine Hamilton and Darryl Blox-
ham were awarded ‘Man of the
Match’ for two of many out-
standing performances that day.
By a twist of fate, we were
drawn against near rivals Basing-
stoke Town in both the Hamp-
shire Senior Cup and the next
round of the FA Cup, and both
within the same week! In the Hants
Cup on the Tuesday night we led 2-1 at
the break. Centre forward Josh Daniels
in that first half led the line superbly,
scoring an excellent equaliser, and
when Jack Smillie added a second with
a superb finish, the home fans started
to vent their frustration. But Basing-
stoke’s firepower told in the end and
they ran out 3-2 winners.
The Saturday of the Third Qualifying
Round of the FA Cup on 15th October
was a beautifully sunny, warm day. The
pitch was being heavily watered as we
arrived - was it really October!? To be
drawn away at Basingstoke Town - our
near neighbours playing several levels
above us in the Conference South - was
the dream tie for us, especially with so
many of our players, coaching staff and
even supporters having past ties with
the Camrose club.
Above: Captain Martin Williams (Willo)

Allen looking on.
I've seen Town stumble to dreadful
results in the Cup in past seasons but
they were very organised that day. I
was just left to wonder what may have
happened if we hadn't played on the
previous Tuesday night, as Basingstoke
were not taking us lightly this time and
were very much faster out of the blocks
and clearly looking to kill us off early
on, and they did with a display that you

might expect but don't always get from
a side at their level. That’s not to say I
feel we'd have got a result, but we may

have run them closer if we'd had any
kind of 'surprise' on our side. Their de-
fence was stronger than in the Hamp-
shire Cup game, and in David Pratt they
had a very good finisher - he caused us
all kinds of problems early on. Delano
Sam-Yorke was suspended but 'stoke
brought in Tim Sills upfront - hardly a
weak replacement. We were missing
strong centre-back Blocko (Darryl Blox-
ham, who - like most of us, never ex-
pected us to still be in the competition
and had booked a holiday!). Jack Smillie
was cup-tied. I was also sorry that day
for midfielder Nick Kingston, having to
come off with a knee injury he’d picked
up in a league match and that had re-
stricted him to the subs bench. He must
have so much wanted to
play well against his old
club but was able to play only a short
time after coming on.
Our pride may have left
us disappointed to go
out 4-0 on the day but
Basingstoke were ruth-
less. We didn't lose our
heads or crumble un-
der the pressure and
the lads took great
credit for that. I
thought we played
pretty well, as well as
the home side let us
play - Basingstoke sim-
ply played to their level and clearly
didn't fancy being on the end of an-
other cup embarrassment. The Basing-
stoke Directors and Chairman Rafi Raz-
zak provided us with great hospitality
and it was a pleasure to revisit friends
I'd not seen for some while. It all made
it a very memorable day. It had been a
terrific cup run which will forever re-
main in the memories of us all.
There was an agonising wait of a few
weeks at the end of the season, after
we finished in the third promotion spot
behind Guernsey, and Bedfont Sports
by a single point, but promotion to the
CCL Premier was eventually confirmed,
capping an extraordinary 2011-12 sea-
son for the club. [Kevin O’Byrne]
