The HSO 2011/12 subscription season opens with Masterworks concerts on september 24-25. The concert begins with Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, the rousing showpiece by Franz Liszt. Prize-winning pianist Daria Rabotkina follows up her HSO debut in 2010 with Rachmaninoff’s first take on the romantic piano concerto. Concluding the concert, Stuart Malina conducts Prokofiev’s triumphant wartime Symphony No. 5.

Don’t miss this concert!Join the harrisburg symphony as we present a cross-genre “concert of Remembrance” on sunday, september 11 at 3 pm. this concert marks the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Local jazz legend steve Rudolph will be joining us on the jazz-flavored first half, along with saxophonists tim Warfield and Jonathan Ragonese, and vocalists Diane wilson and J.D. walter. On the second half, stuart malina conducts vocalists sasha Piastro, Amy Yovanovich, eric Rieger, and Damian savarino, the susquehanna chorale, and the harrisburg symphony in a performance of mozart’s Requiem.

The Harrisburg Symphony Society loves striking the balance of fundraising for the HSO while staying close to the music we represent. Don’t miss our annual Musicale, where we feature a guest performer in an intimate setting, giving each attendee the opportunity to meet the artist, hear and watch their talents just steps away from the performance. the hsO hitsA hOme Run!

The HSO hit a few home runs this summer. Five, to be exact. And we want to say thank you to our sponsors and everyone who joined us for our “5 Nights of Free Summer Concerts” over the July 4th holiday. The response this year was overwhelming. Thanks to your support, we shattered last year’s attendance records!

The free summer concerts are our way of bringing the music directly into the communities we serve. Maestro Malina and the Harrisburg Symphony filled the air with music in Lemoyne, Annville (Lebanon Valley College), Carlisle (Carlisle Summerfair), McAlisterville (East Juniata High School), and at Metro Bank Park in Harrisburg, home of the Harrisburg Senators.

hARRisbuRg sYmPhOnY sOcietY 2012 shOwhOuse AnD gARDens Serenity on tHe yellow BreecHeS

What major event happens every three years, brings together top interior designers and landscapers from all over the midstate area, and raises thousands of dollars for the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra? The Harrisburg Symphony Society (HSS) Designer Showhouse & Gardens, of course! Although it hardly seems like three years have passed, it is Showhouse time again, with the HSS bringing you the 2012 edition, “Serenity on the Yellow Breeches,” from May 19 through June 10, 2012.

For the 2012 event, we have been fortunate to find a lovely greystone farmhouse built in 1795 with an addition in the mid-1800’s and another in the mid-1900’s. It sits on the banks of the Yellow Breeches Creek in Lower Allen Township, Cumberland County. Complete with a trout stream, pond, bank barn, rolling open lawns and mature trees, the Showhouse & Gardens will delight our designers, our landscapers and our visitors.

As with all projects of this size, we will need many, many volunteers. Volunteers to serve on our

committees. Volunteers to housesit while the designers work. Volunteers to serve as docents while the house is open to the public. Volunteers to work in the café, boutique, designer sales, and ticket sales. Every other year the HSO Education Committee presents our symphony stroll, a “progressive” music event that allows event patrons to experience three different

restaurant settings – all within walking distance (so you may stroll!) – and three distinctly different and marvelous musical ensembles, comprised of HSO musicians. The Stroll takes

musicians off the Forum stage and places them in more casual settings around town. An afternoon passport is just $40 and entitles each guest to one complimentary beverage and complimentary hors d’oeuvres at each restaurant. Tickets are available on our website at

We are excited to introduce and welcome ted Reese to the HSO family. Ted joins us as our new Director of Development. He is responsible for all fundraising initiatives. Before coming to the HSO, Ted worked at WITF for 7 ½ years as Director of Leadership Gifts and Director

of Gift Planning. Prior to becoming a fundraiser, Ted was a licensed Funeral Director and the owner of a third-generation family business in Harrisburg.

Ted is a member of the Central PA Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and serves on the board of the Susquehanna Valley Planned Giving Council. He is past president of the Central PA Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the Lions Club of Harrisburg. Ted is an avid bicyclist and a trumpet player who plays in several local ensembles, including his own street band. Ted and his wife, Lori, live in Harrisburg and are the parents of two grown children.
