For his fi rst solo recital for harmonia mundi, countertenor Bejun Mehta sings arias by Handel from the repertoire of the famous castrato Senesino. Encompassing the gamut of emotion from shadow ("Ombra cara") to light ("Sento la gioia"), this album re-introduces Mehta's prodigious talents as a solo artist.

With this new disc, pianist Cédric Tiberghien offers us a panorama of Chopin’s output. A selection of the composer’s charming Mazurkas are framed by three other seminal works. The Mazurkas, written between 1830 and 1849, are inspired by Polish folk music, but are polished and stylized in the Romantic tradition. This is Tiberghien’s second disc of Chopin for harmonia mundi, and it provides yet another fi ne example of his probing intellect and sparkling technique.

Tafelmusik (table music) is a term used since the mid-16th century for music played at feasts and banquets. Some of the most signifi cant composers of Tafelmusik included Johann Schein and Michael Praetorius, who wrote about the genre in his Syntagma musicum of 1619. Composed in 1733, Telemann’s Tafelmusik has been compared as a collection to the renowned Brandenburg Concertos of Johann Sebastian Bach in clearly demonstrating the composer’s supreme skill in handling a diversity of musical genres and a variety of instruments. Played here by the Freiburger Barockorchester under the direction of their leader Gottfried von der Goltz, these Baroque gems shine as never before. Special pricing makes this set ideal for gift-giving.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDFor their fi fth album, young British choral stars Stile Antico turn to Thomas Tallis’ magnifi cent seven-part Christmas Mass, based on the plainchant Puer natus est (“A boy is born”). The mass is interspersed with seasonal Tudor music, including William Byrd’s exquisite Propers for the fourth Sunday of Advent (from the Gradualia of 1605), responsories by Taverner and Sheppard, Robert White’s exuberant setting of the Magnifi cat, and Tallis’ own sublime Videte miraculum. All of Stile Antico’s previous recordings for harmonia mundi have charted on Billboard and the group has twice earned the Diapason d’Or de l’année, the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik and twice received GRAMMY® nominations. Their phenomenally successful 2009 release Song of Songs was the winner of a 2009 Gramophone award.

As he looked ahead to structures and soundworlds then unimagined, and glanced back to the bedrock counterpoint of Western music, Beethoven turned inwards to his well of experience, much of it harsh, from which he drew this music of transcendent power.

The Stabat mater is a thirteenth-century Roman Catholic hymn variously attributed to Pope Innocent III and Friar Jacopone da Todi. Its title is an abbreviation of the first line of verse, Stabat mater dolorosa (“The sorrowful mother stood”). One of the most powerful and immediate of extant medieval poems, the Stabat mater meditates on the suffering of Mary during Jesus’ crucifi xion and is traditionally sung at the liturgy on the memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows. Pergolesi’s musical setting is one of the most beloved works in all of classical music. This new recording from the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin features vocal solos by alto Bernarda Fink and soprano Anna Prohaska.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThe Concert spirituel was one of the first public concert series in existence. The concerts began in Paris in 1725 and ended in 1790. The series was founded to provide entertainment on religious holidays when the other spectacles (the Paris Opera, Comédie-Francaise and Comédie-Italienne) were closed. The programs featured a mixture of sacred choral works and virtuosic instrumental pieces, and for many years took place in a magnifi cently decorated Salle des Cent Suisses in the Tuileries Palace. They were primarily attended by well-to- do bourgeois, the lower aristocracy and foreign visitors. Jordi Savall brings these magnifi cent evenings back to life, thanks to an imaginary “concert spirituel” program featuring three major composers from three major European countries: Corelli, Telemann and Rameau. This album enables us to rediscover the quintessence of the musical life during the reign of Louis XV. As you have come to expect from Alia Vox, it features superlative soloists, magnifi cent artwork and state-of-the-art sound engineering.

In this tuneful and attractive program, pianist Daniel Tong and the London Bridge Ensemble present three major chamber works by Frank Bridge from his engaging pre-First World War period, including the recording of Paul Hindmarsh’s edition of the Violin Sonata. Commanding performances of the well-known Piano Quintet of 1912 and the comparatively little-known Phantasie for string quartet, with which Bridge won second prize in the Cobbett Competition in 1905, make a fi ne group. These chamber works are complemented by charming performances of three solo piano pieces - April, Rosemary and Valse Capricieuse.

Handel’s Israel in Egypt was premiered at London’s King’s Theatre in the Haymarket on April 4, 1739. The fi fth of the composer’s nineteen oratorios, its libretto is based almost entirely upon the Biblical book of Exodus. It was not received well, and after several attempts revising his fi rst effort, in 1756 Handel gave up and rewrote the work from scratch. The new version was a hit and quickly assumed a place alongside Messiah as one of England’s favorite choral treasures. This recording from Eloquentia features the talented choristers of Arsys Bourgogne accompanied by Pierre Cao leading Concerto Köln.

In addition to his work as a soloist, Luigi Piovano is the principal cellist of the Symphony Orchestra of the National Academy of Santa Cecilia in Rome. He began his career touring the world with the Camerata Lysy under Yehudi Menuhin’s direction. A regular performer in the US, Piovano has appeared at Carnegie Hall and the Newport Music Festival. This new set of Bach Suites for Eloquentia enters a crowded fi eld, but Piovano’s wit, intelligence and prodigious skill will win over listeners. SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDCelebrating the 200th birth anniversary of Franz Liszt (1811-1886), Gloriae Dei Cantores presents a little-known, deeply spiritual side of this musical giant. Liszt composed his a cappella masterpiece Missa Choralis, featured on this recording, during an extended stay at a monastery in Rome. Faith of My Heart also highlights several smaller works of great beauty and spirit, including the Pater Noster and Ave Maris Stella. This SACD was recorded in surround sound in the stunning acoustics of the Church of the Transfi guration in Orleans, Massachusetts and features the majestic sounds of the church’s E.M. Skinner organ.

This recording by the Gloriae Dei Cantores Schola depicts the sacred mystery of Christmas in the ancient melodies of Gregorian chant. The fi rst of four masses, the quietly joyful Ad Missam in Vigilia, builds on the anticipation of the coming event. The second mass, the tender Ad Missam in Nocte, is sung at the hour traditionally observed as the time of Christ’s birth. The third mass, celebrated at dawn on Christmas Day, Ad Missam in Aurora, expresses the coming of the light into the world. The fourth mass, Ad Missam in Die, is a jubilant expression of religious salvation. Also included are a selection of antiphons honoring the Virgin Mary.

With this disc, the acclaimed British violist Lawrence Power launches a new series for Hyperion featuring the seminal twentieth-century works for the viola. Of the three Hungarian concertos on this latest release, the best-known is Bartok’s viola concerto, completed after the composer’s death by Tibor Serly. Serly was Bartók’s most constant and trusted Hungarian musician-friend in his last years. It was quickly recognized as one of the major contributions to the repertoire. Also featured are Serly’s own Rhapsody for Viola and Orchestra, a skilful and elaborate work with a rollicking fi nale, and a darkly Romantic, and authentically Hungarian concerto by the fi lm composer Miklós Rósza.

Howard Shelley’s series of Clementi’s Piano Sonatas has received the highest critical acclaim and reawakened interest in this important body of piano music. Today, the composer has been overshadowed by his great rivals; but, as this unique series has shown, the best of his sonatas can equal Mozart and Haydn and were clearly a huge infl uence on the young Beethoven. This sixth and fi nal volume contains some of the most complex, virtuosic and large-scale works that Clementi wrote for the keyboard, written for performance in London concert halls, by the great pianists of the day, for a fashionable and discerning audience.

In 1997, The Holst Singers and Stephen Layton produced a disc that immediately became a cult classic and a best-seller. Ikon, a selection of great Russian choral music from the 19th century, dazzled with its grand, opulent beauty. Now the same forces return with Ikon II. Many of the works recorded here are by composers whose names will not be familiar – but the extraordinary quality of the music is unmistakable and immediately enthralling.

American pianist Garrick Ohlsson, whose complete Chopin set was acclaimed as one of the most important anniversary releases of 2010, now turns to another signifi cant body of Romantic piano music - Brahms’ variations. The coruscatingly diffi cult Paganini Variations, is frequently featured in piano competitions, performed to demonstrate extraordinary technique. The Variations and Fugue on a theme of Handel is one of the summits of his entire keyboard output, showing the composer at the height of his powers. This two-disc set also contains some little-known gems, including the wonderful Variations on an Original Theme.

This fourteenth volume of Christopher Herrick’s monumental Organ Fireworks series comes from the organ of Melbourne Town Hall. As ever, Herrick presents a cornucopia of virtuoso delights, opening with a bang with Lemare’s outrageous transcription of the Grand March from Aida, given a new sheen by Herrick himself. Other works include pieces by living composers Iain Farrington and Paul Spicer, and examples of the best of the English and French traditions of 19th and 20th century organ writing.

Ferdinand David is principally known today as the dedicatee of Mendelssohn’s violin concerto. But in his time he was also celebrated as a composer. His output included two symphonies, five violin concertos, a string sextet, quartets, several sets of variations and volumes of studies for violin, choral works and some lieder. His works had considerable success in his lifetime, and their revival reveals highly attractive music of phenomenal accomplishment. Bearing in mind David’s close affi nity with Mendelssohn it is hardly surprising that some of his music has a fairly Mendelssohnian character. Hagai Shaham, a regular of this series and a master of the 19th century virtuoso idiom, performs these works with his usual panache, ably accompanied by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Martyn Brabbins.

Celebrating 30 years of excellence

October 1980 saw the foundation of a new classical record company that was to become one of the best loved in the world. A revolutionary release, A Feather on the breath of God, featuring the music of Hildegard of Bingen, soon put Hyperion Records fi rmly on the map. Since then it has become a global success, a byword for excellence in all aspects of the recording process and the winner of more awards than any other classical record label. Simon Perry, son of the label’s revered founder, the late Ted Perry, is leading Hyperion forward with the unfl agging vigor and tireless dedication to the high standards that have always been the label’s hallmark.

Hyperion takes its name from an altogether splendid fi gure from Greek mythology. Hyperion was one of the Titans and the father of the sun and the moon — and also of the Muses, so the label is fulfi lling his modern role by giving the art of music to the world. The repertoire available on Hyperion and its midpriced Helios series (Helios, the sun, was the son of Hyperion), ranges over the entire spectrum of music — sacred and secular, choral and solo vocal, orchestral, chamber and instrumental — and much of it is unique to Hyperion. The catalogue currently comprises nearly 1,400 CDs and approximately 80 new titles are issued each year.

In celebration of their thirtieth birthday, Hyperion is re-issuing thirty landmark titles from the back catalogue at mid-price. These discs include benchmark recordings of great music performed by some of the fi nest artists who have worked with the label over the last thirty years, including Steven Isserlis, Matthias Goerne, Angela Hewitt, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Takács Quartet, Stephen Hough, The Choir of Westminster Cathedral and many others. Many of the discs are Gramophone Award winners and Records of the Year and all have received the highest possible critical and public acclaim. These specially packaged releases will be available alongside their full-price counterparts until stocks are depleted.

SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDSir Colin Davis’ eagerly anticipated recording of Verdi’s Otello is released on the 10th anniversary of the LSO Live label. Opera has always formed an important part of the label’s output. Among Sir Colin Davis’ greatest triumphs on LSO Live have been his award-winning recordings of Berlioz and Verdi’s fi nal opera, Falstaff. Falstaff was released in 2004 and won a GRAMMY® Award for Best Opera. For the title role, Davis is joined by one of the world’s most exciting young tenors. New Zealander Simon O’Neill stepped in at short notice, making his debut in the role, delivering what can only be described as an astonishing performance. The villainous Iago is played by Gerald Finley and Otello’s wife Desdemona by Anne Schwanewilms. Otello, which was premiered in 1887, marked a signifi cant evolutionary development in Italian opera and is widely regarded as one of the great operatic masterpieces.

This is the début recording from pianist Shai Wosner, an artist who continues to attract international recognition for his exceptional artistry, musical integrity and creative insight. Wosner’s virtuosity and perceptiveness have increasingly made him a favorite among audiences

and critics alike. In 2005, Wosner won an Avery Fisher Career Grant. He also continues his extensive performing and recording activity as a BBC New Generation Artist. Wosner calls the Suite by Schonberg and the Handel Variations by Brahms ‘declarations of independence.’ The Schonberg was his fi rst purely 12-tone work, and the Brahms was his fi rst wholly successful solo piano work after the three early sonatas. Brahms the revolutionary is highlighted by Wosner on this CD by interweaving the late Fantasies with Schoenberg’s early Op.19 Piano Pieces. Only twelve years separate the two and the surprises from Wosner’s clever juxtaposition are many.

Orange Mountain Music presents Philip Glass’ second violin concerto, subtitled The American Four Seasons, performed by violinist Robert McDuffi e accompanied by the London Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Marin Alsop. This live performance was captured on the occasion of the UK premiere of the work in the spring of 2010. The concerto is in four movements, with each movement preceded by a piece for solo violin comprised of a prologue and three songs. The strings-only orchestra is complemented by a synthesizer producing a sound palette that harkens back to the Philip Glass of the 1970s. The American Four Seasons was commissioned by McDuffi e to act as a companion piece to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons concertos, which are among the most performed and recorded works in the history of music.

A brilliant orchestrator, Ravel was responsible for what is perhaps the most famous orchestration of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition as well as for his own work Le Tombeau de Couperin. This CD from Phil.harmonie features chamber arrangements of these works by Wolfgang Renz. Ensemble Berlin, comprised of musicians from the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, was drawn together by the opportunity to make high-level music in a relaxed atmosphere together.

Arranging songs to be played on an instrument invariably raises the question of whether the music will still make sense when stripped of the words, especially in the case of a composer like Schumann. Listeners will fi nd their own answers to this question, based on each individual’s preference. However, as played here by Berlin Philharmonic violist Martin Stegner and his regular accompanist Tomoko Takahashi, these are transcriptions that prove Schumann’s music can stand on its own, able to express the intent and emotion of the words without any pretense or affectation.

Led by violinist Rainer Kussmaul, the Berliner Barock Solisten are one of today’s most renowned early music groups. Their recordings have received many awards, including a GRAMMY® in 2005. This recording for Phil.harmonie features a selection of masterpieces by Antonio Vivaldi. It includes the famous Four Seasons with Kussmaul on the solo violin, the Cello Concerto in B-minor with Georg Faust, the Viola d’amore Concerto in A-minor with Wolfram Christ and the Concerto for Oboe & Violin with Jonathan Kelly as oboe soloist.

Erwin Schulhoff was undoubtedly one of the most versatile and imaginative composers of the last century. That his career, and his life, came to an abrupt end in a National Socialist internment camp in 1942 represents one of the great tragedies of Europe‘s barbaric recent past. Nevertheless, during his brief life, Schulhoff absorbed, transformed and expressed many of the most significant and progressive creative urges of his age. His catalogue of over 200 compositions includes some of the most fascinating, challenging, exciting, and moving music of the 20th-century. The three works on this disc were all written by Schulhoff in the 1920s, when his career was at its peak, and display the full range of the composer‘s colorful, expressive musical palette.

SACD Hybrid / Stereo & Multi-channel / DSDWith this third release in the Horizon series, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra once again underlines the importance of contemporary music in its concert programming. The works featured on this disc represent a selection of recordings of works that the orchestra premiered in its 2008-09 season (some of which were commissioned by the orchestra) or of which few or no quality recordings are available. The orchestra was led by conductors Ed Spanjaard, Markus Stenz and David Robertson and mezzo-soprano Christianne Stotijn is featured soloist.

A feast of contemporary music

When Igor Stravinsky read The Soldier’s Tale in 1916, he was inspired to transform the fairy tale into a theater work. In wartime Switzerland, where the composer was living in exile, all the theatres were closed. The piece was therefore created with purely practical considerations in mind – a mobile stage, a minimal seven-piece orchestra and a plot in which the scenes followed each other like a series of illustrations. The story is taken from a Russian folk tale, but there are parallels in other cultures, such as the puppet show version of Doctor Faustus. This version, in German, is narrated by Dominique Horwitz from an adaptation by Hans Reinhart.

File In: World / FranceBending the rules of Occitan tradition, Moussu T e lei jovents reinvent the songs of Marseilles to spread the message of Provence, a harbor turned towards the sea, cosmopolitan and proud of its history. Their music draws on popular sounds from Marseilles of the 1930s - a mixture of Provençal songs, Vincent Scotto’s operettas, blues, jazz, Caribbean and Brazilian music. With this cosmopolitan blend of musical styles, Moussu T brings together their latest collection of shanty songs that tell of the briny seas, abandoned shipyards and the calanques. Their repertoire is simultaneously traditional and modern, local and universal, nostalgic and above all, foot tapping.

File In: World / TuvaRedefi ning the folk traditions of their native Tuva, the four brilliant singers/multi-instrumentalists of Huun Huur Tu transform ancient and modern musical forms into a rich sonic tapestry. The band’s members come from the former Soviet Republic of Tuva, a sparsely settled region that lies at the center of Asia, north of Mongolia, and 2,500 miles east of Moscow. Since its formation 1992, the group has featured indigenous music played on rare instruments and has preserved and popularized khöömei (throat-singing) - arguably one of the world’s oldest forms of music making. Closely linked to traditional shamanistic practices, Tuvan folk music, with its combination of instrumental and throat-singing sounds, has been used for communication with spirits of the human, animal and natural worlds for centuries. Singled out for its incredible sound, Huun Huur Tu has performed in venues around the world. Their past collaborations include projects with Frank Zappa, Ry Cooder, The Kronos Quartet, and (most recently) electronica wiz and record producer Carmen Rizzo.

File In: World / SpainThe Catalan Rumba is a music style that emerged in the mid fi fties, chiefl y inspired by Cuban and Puerto Rican sounds and a pronounced Latin Salsa rhythm akin to the New York Hispano bands of the seventies. The ‘ventilador’ - the fan-like motion of striking the guitar strings - is another specifi c ingredient of this music style along with the vocals and the hand-clapping percussion found in fl amanco music known as ‘palmas.’ All three together make this Rumba style valuably diverse. The band Sabor de Gràcia is named after Gràcia, a section of the city of Barcelona that is home to a small community of Catalan Gypsies where this musical style has its roots. They are now one of its leading bands, always true to the grand Rumba tradition.

All Zones / 89 Minutes / Dolby Stereo 5.1 / Subtitles in English, Spanish & FrenchFile In: World / SpainOver the course of her professional career, which started in 1976, the Catalan vocalist Marina Rossell has released more than fourteen records. She has performed with such diverse artists as Montserrat Caballé, Carlos Cano, Pedro Guerra and the fl amenco guitarist Tomatito and has collaborated in movies by directors Ventura Pons and Antoni Ribas. Her unmistakable voice and the powerful emotion it carries have won her fans in countries around the world. This DVD documents a live performance of her classic repertoire of Catalan songs, sung to an adoring crowd at the Gran Teatre del Liceu de Barcelona.

All Zones / 97 Minutes / StereoFile In: World / IndiaOriginally released in 1971, Raga: A Film Journey to the Soul of India documents the life of sitar master Ravi Shankar in the late 1960s and early 1970s, following him on his return to India to revisit his guru, Bengali multi-instrumentalist and composer, Baba Ustad Allauddin Khan. It further explores Shankar’s life as a musician and teacher in the United States and Europe, initiating those in the West to the exceptional world that is Indian classical music and culture. Through rare and candid footage shot in both India and the United States, Raga sheds light on Shankar’s infl uences and collaborations, from Allauddin Khan to his famed dancer brother Uday Shankar, to his associations with Western musicians Yehudi Menuhin and George Harrison. Fully narrated by Shankar himself, the fi lm reveals music as the soul of India and of Shankar’s life. The premiere DVD release of Raga was taken from a digitally re-mastered 35mm print optimized to modern color range resolution and standard and a fully re-mastered audio soundtrack.

File In: World / GermanyThe perfect setting for listening to the music of Sonia Brex is a sultry summer evening in a big city, when the day isn’t quite over but the night hasn’t quite begun. A knowing innocence runs through the songs on Brex’s new album Naif, an ease that remains even when the music slows to a more melancholy mood. It is an album glowing with unshakable optimism that features a wide array of sounds and infl uences. At times she whispers like Astrud Gilberto over a gentle bossa nova rhythm, then she playfully covers 1940s classic from the USA. Synthesizer drones and digital bass drums set the pace, and Brex takes full advantage of the benefi ts the electronica genre offers.

File In: World / FranceA world away from Paris’s tourist traps, Barbes is one of the city’s less visited but most fascinating corners. It is an Arab and African enclave that provides a unique and rich color to Paris’ cultural landscape. Both Chant du Monde artists Orchestre National de Barbes and the Toubab All Stars are based here, but their stylistic approaches could not be more different. Orchestre National de Barbes focuses on the music of North Africa for their source material, while the Toubab All Stars have blended the music of Jamaica and sub-Saharan Africa, brilliantly absorbing ska, dancehall and soukous styles in a thrilling, hard-to-resist formula.

File In: JazzWith her newest release, entitled Nina, jazz vocalist Kellylee Evans continues to evolve her distinctive sound. Her fi rst two albums, Fight or Flight and The Good Girl, seamlessly fuse jazz and her own unique style of “soul pop.” Nina is a beautiful tribute to one of jazz’s greatest vocalists and pianists, Nina Simone. Evans’ love and respect for the original recordings of the music constantly shines through, but, even in taking on some of Simone’s most iconic repertoire, the twelve tracks on the album showcase Evans’ own versatility, creativity and innate musicality. She is reunited with guitarist Marvin Sewell, who appeared on her fi rst album, and joined by bassist François Moutin and drummer André Ceccarelli. This marks the Canadian singer’s debut on the French label Plus Loin Music, who discovered her online through her MySpace site.

“Try to put singer/songwriter Kellylee Evans into any one musical category, and marvel as she effortlessly soars over, glides under, dances around, or bursts through it.

Her electric, eclectic, vibe is a heady brew of jazz, soul, blues, Caribbean, and more.”
