Three years before the Midsummer Night’s Dream overture, Felix Mendelssohn wrote an amazing double concerto for fortepiano and violin, built on the Classical model but brimming with new, even iconoclastic ideas. When it had its fi rst performance in May 1823, the composer was aged just fourteen, however, he had already written around one hundred works, including a piano concerto premiered a year earlier. It was not until the late 20th century that these works appeared in a critical edition, on which this recording is based.

Insightful Beethoven from Paul Lewis

Stereophile Recording of the Month

Kristian Bezuidenhout plays Mendelssohn

Street Date: July 12, 2011

This month, Hyperion presents a collection of American a cappella choral works by little-known composers entitled Beyond All Mortal Dreams (p.15), recorded by the Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge and directed by Stephen Layton. Also on Hyperion is the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra’s invigorating performance of William Walton’s virtuosic Symphonies Nos. 1 & 2 (p.16), led by Martyn Brabbins. Onyx launches a series of the complete Britten songs this month, curated and accompanied by pianist Malcolm Martineau and featuring a stellar group of vocalists (p.20). Worthy of special mention are seven new titles in Dutton’s Epoch series, six new DVDs in harmonia mundi’s Private Music Lesson series and a new installment in RCO Live’s Mahler symphony cycle. In non-classical releases, Cuban jazz pianist Harold Lopez-Nussa returns with El País de las Maravillas (p.29), a new album on World Village recorded with his trio. Gypsy band Bratsch debuts on World Village with Plein du Monde (p.32), a reissue of a favorite album featuring cameos with several famous artists. Also on World Village is Por Meu Cante (p.33), the fi rst album by fado singer António Zambujo, introducing his unique blend of traditional and international styles.

IMPORTThe motets presented here are laid out as for a vesper service, starting with an invitatory followed by fi ve psalms with antiphon and fi nally the Magnifi cat. Leonardo Garcia Alarcón has opted for the antiphons for the feast of St. Mark, patron saint of Venice. This recording is, rather than a reconstruction, an evocation of the Offi ce of Vespers, whose principal framework is the appropriate music composed by Vivaldi. Alarcón has been artistic director of the Choeur de Chambre de Namur since January 2010. In the same year, he began a three-year residency at the Centre Culturel de Rencontre d’Ambronay.

IMPORTDutilleux’s concerted works for violin are among the composer’s fi nest and this is the fi rst time L’Arbre des songes and Sur le même accord have been presented together on the same CD. A parallel is drawn between these two works and the Violin Concerto by Rafaël D’Haene, a composer who studied with Dutilleux. 23-year-old violinist Yossif Ivanov is accompanied here by the Orchestra of the Lyon Opéra conducted by Kazushi Ono.

IMPORTPierre Bartholomée was artistic director and resident conductor of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège for twenty-two years. Co-founder of the Ensemble Musiques Nouvelles, he has worked with Messiaen, Xenakis, Berio, Boulez and Schnittke. This disc presents five of his recent works for solo instruments. Oraisons for cello and Face à Face for viola were written for Ophélie Gaillard and Dominica Eyckmans. Le Livre d’orgue is dedicated to Belgian organist Bernard Foccroulle and played here by Jean-Philippe Merckaert.

IMPORTDutton presents a pioneering traversal of Gordon Jacob’s complete music for viola and orchestra. These world premiere recordings cover over fifty years of the composer’s life. Included are the two numbered concertos, the tuneful Concert Piece and Graham Parlett’s orchestration of the Three Pieces from 1930. All are played with fi ne style and characteristic tone by viola soloist Helen Callus, accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Stephen Bell.

IMPORTDutton presents a fascinating exploration of unknown cello concertos by York Bowen, Alan Bush and Havergal Brian. York Bowen calls his big romantic piece a Rhapsody for Cello and Orchestra, while Alan Bush terms his four-movement virtuoso vehicle a Concert Suite. Brian’s Cello Concerto dates from 1964 but is in an unexpectedly light and engaging style quite different to his writing in most of the symphonies. All three notable discoveries are performed here by cellist Raphael Wallfi sch.

IMPORTThe four Delius works contained on this new Dutton release are seldom heard, yet each is of outstanding musical interest. Life’s Dance teems with an almost Straussian richness of thematic material and calls for a degree of orchestral virtuosity that is rarely found in Delius. The more extended Poem of Life and Love (receiving its premiere recording) had to be slightly reconstructed and was fi rst published only in 1999; it is the last in the composer’s great series of works for orchestra.

IMPORTOver the course of his long and distinguished career, Stephen Dodgson has written works in almost every form. An acute ear and sharp sense for instrumental sonorities have drawn him particularly to chamber music. His nine acknowledged string quartets (four more were withdrawn) are among the most important written by a modern English composer and range from works of an almost Bartókian intensity to pieces in which his light touch and sometimes mischievous wit shine through. His most recent quartet, the ninth, is a fi ne example of how serious things can be said in a light-hearted manner.

IMPORTHere, recorded for the fi rst time, is music from seven of the thirty-four fi lms scored by British composer Doreen Carwithen between 1947 and 1954. The fi lms represented here range from drama to documentaries. Carwithen is adept in providing the right mood and scoring for each of these titles. From the gentle pastoralism of East Anglian Holiday to the swashbuckling Men of Sherwood Forest to the bold and dramatic score for Mantrap, this disc offers an enjoyable and varied listening experience.

IMPORTDutton’s fi rst modern Havergal Brian disc features the brilliant Royal Scottish National Orchestra led by Martyn Brabbins. The large array of percussion in Symphony No.10 is caught in demonstration-worthy sound, as are the mighty climaxes and Brian’s quiet, atmospheric Sibelian interludes. In contrast, the gentler textures of Brian’s delightfully tuneful English Suite No.3, heard here on CD for the first time, are sympathetically conveyed in a rewarding acoustic.

IMPORTDutton’s groundbreaking Arnell series has garnered much attention and warm praise from critics. Arnell’s music – widely admired by such artists as Sir Thomas Beecham and Leopold Stokowski – fell out of musical fashion in the late 1950s. Thankfully, Arnell’s superbly conceived and original compositions were rediscovered by later generations, who have responded with notable enthusiasm. This new recording contains the fi rst fi ve of his six string quartets, performed by the Tippett Quartet.

IMPORTOn this new set from Eloquentia, Luigi Piovano performs the complete works for cello by Camille Saint-Saëns. Included are both sonatas and concertos as well as a selection of smaller works including the famous “Swan” movement from the Carnival of the Animals. Piovano is accompanied by pianists Nazzareno Carusi and Luisa Prayer and the Orchestra del Teatro Marruchino led by Piero Bellugi.

IMPORTThe text and music of Dov Seltzer’s Requiem, which follows closely the deeds and tragic death of Yitzhak Rabin, has become a hymn to peace and understanding and a statement against violence and war. Although parts of the text are taken from Hebrew prayers, Hebrew literature and the Bible, Lament for Yitzhak is a secular work. In the Hebrew religion, the tradition of the requiem does not exist, thus the fi ve movements of the work follow the musical form of the Catholic mass. The Hebrew prayers used in this context parallel the Christian texts. A 69-minute bonus DVD is included and the disc features a track with the voice of Yitzhak Rabin reading excerpts of three of his most important speeches.

IMPORTOn Beyond All Mortal Dreams, Stephen Layton and his acclaimed Trinity College Choir perform a magnifi cent selection of American a cappella choral works. The recording is a showcase of little-known American composers unearthed by Layton during his travels. T h e s e d i s t i n c t i v e a n d luminous compositions illustrate the context in which better-known composers such as Lauridsen and Whitacre — already championed by Layton — learned their craft. The choir is in perfect voice here, and their purity of tone, fl awless intonation and depth of feeling are truly exceptional. This wonderful disc is a must for all choral music fans.

IMPORTOn this new disc, Martyn Brabbins and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra offer invigorating and authoritative performances of William

Walton’s two symphonies. The musicians balance stunning control with breathtaking energy and character. Following the resounding success of his Belshazzar’s Feast, Walton spent three years perfecting his dramatic fi rst symphony. The immensely virtuosic work displays an astounding range of colors and emotional volatility, refl ecting the turbulence of Walton’s private life. The second symphony is more concise and refi ned. Somewhat out of kilter with the austerity of its time, this masterpiece was slow to emerge from the shadow of its predecessor. Also included on the disc is Walton’s intimate orchestral work Siesta, written in 1926.

IMPORTInspired by the rural beauty of the surroundings at his country retreat in 1917, Edward Elgar embarked on the composition of some of his most inspired and imaginative chamber works. Both the String Quartet and the Piano Quintet are works of great depth and elegance. Their conservative style disregards the compositional trends of the time and displays an unabashed late-romanticism. The disc features sumptuous playing from the acclaimed Goldner String Quartet, who are joined by pianist Piers Lane for Elgar’s sublime Piano Quintet, a large-scale work of almost orchestral sonority. These masterpieces are accompanied by four previously unrecorded works for solo piano, the last of which was written by Elgar at the age of 72. They are intimate, charming rarities, superbly performed by Lane.

IMPORTPreviously Available as CDA 66629 (034571166292) Deleted October 2007Francisco de Peñalosa was born around 1470 near Madrid. His career as a composer and singer coincided with the beginning of Spain’s Golden Age, spanning the time of the conquest of Granada and the fi nal expulsion of the Moors, the discovery of the New World, the unifi cation of the Spanish kingdoms of Castile and Aragon and the beginnings of Spain’s rapid rise as a world power. Peñalosa was the most important fi gure of his generation. This disc with the Westminster Cathedral Choir led by James O’Donnellpresents two of the composer’s glorious mass settings.

IMPORTPreviously Available as CDA 67394 (034571173948) Deleted May 2009Given Moscheles’ contemporary fame, it is surprising how much his reputation has faded. His downfall was surely that his transitional idiom was quickly overshadowed by the titans of the new Romantic movement. This CD brings together all his works that could be described as ‘concert studies.’ These works offer many foretastes of later composers such as Schumann and Brahms and reveal the infl uence that Moscheles had on later generations. Piers Lane does his customary magnifi cent job in presenting these studies, most of which are premiere recordings.

IMPORTThis ‘themed’ program by Da Pacem and soprano Raphaële Kennedy derives from a series of concerts devoted to Bach’s infamous journey on foot to hear Buxtehude play. Did he have leave of absence from his employers? Did the four-month absence change his style forever? Buxtehude achieved a staggering synthesis of the polyphonic, numerical and rhetorical traditions of his predecessors with a very personal poetry, taking care to make his music accessible to everyone, from the specialist to the layman. It is not surprising that Bach took him as his model.

IMPORTSébastien de Brossard, an enthusiastic collector of music, pedagogue and author of the fi rst dictionary of music, was also a very talented composer. This champion of Italian music and great connoisseur of the music of Carissimi probably took the Roman master as the model for his two oratorios. Leandro, a dramatic work in Italian, is a miniature masterpiece and one of the earliest cantatas by a French composer. On this new disc from the enterprising Mirare label, the ensemble La Rêveuse offers up brilliant performances of these shining examples of early French vocal music.

IMPORTThroughout his creat ive l i fe , Benjamin Britten was a prolific composer of songs, producing over 100 settings for voice and

piano, in addition to the works for voice and orchestra. His songs for voice and piano – of which this is the fi rst in a two volume 4CD cycle — contain settings by poets as diverse as Michelangelo, Hölderlin, Hardy, Pushkin, Auden and Soutar. The earliest songs date from 1922, when Britten was just nine years old. These rarities display little of the mature composer’s style, but they are confi dent and charming settings. Many of these early songs are receiving their premiere recordings here. The Holy Sonnets of John Donne, Winter Words and The Poet’s Echo represent mature Britten. This survey of all Britten’s songs for voice and piano is a major project, and Malcolm Martineau has assembled some of the fi nest young singers of our time for this fascinating journey through this important repertoire.

IMPORTOne of the biggest successes of Donizetti’s career, Linda di Chamounix was performed all over the operatic world in the decades following its 1842 Viennese premiere, before it fell into neglect. The live concert performances recorded by Opera Rara at Covent Garden in 2009 were its fi rst there since 1887. The work is one of Donizetti’s fi nest achievements, aimed at the musically sophisticated Viennese public and featuring some of his best arias, ensembles and choruses. Sir Mark Elder conducts the recent critical edition of this outstanding score. The three-disc set comes with a lavishly illustrated book including a complete libretto with an English translation, comprehensive article and synopsis by eminent 19th-century musical scholar, Jeremy Commons.

IMPORTOpera Rara continues to explore the fascinating fi gure of Saverio Mercadante with this world premiere recording of substantial highlights from I Normanni a Parigi, written for Turin in 1832. With Rossini in retirement, Mercadante was then in competition with Bellini and Donizetti for the crown of Italian opera. As this work demonstrates, he was easily in the running. The libretto is set in Paris following the death of the mighty King Charlemagne and offers personal and political drama of the highest order. This is the seventh opera in the Essential Opera Rara series and, once again, a vivid impression of the work is captured on a single disc, accompanied by a complete libretto and article by the eminent 19th century musical scholar, Jeremy Commons.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThis disc contains pieces from both the beginning and the end of Strauss’ career. A master of the lyrical stage, Strauss is not known for his chamber music. However, before he was twenty-one, he had already composed two piano trios, a string quartet, a cello sonata and a piano quartet. All these compositions were worthy of a young prodigy. In 1940, he composed the Sextet for his opera Capriccio. Performed here by the Prazák Quartet, the juxtaposition of these works fully illustrates the art of this post-romantic composer.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDAn amateur cellist, the composer of Prince Igor was the only one of the Group of Five to have written some ten chamber works for his personal pleasure. Of these, Alexander Borodin’s second string quartet is a pure masterpiece. Its irresistible Nocturne has been played around the world in various arrangements. This new disc from Praga, the fi rst volume in a Borodin series, also features his cello sonata and piano quintet, all performed by members of the Prazák Quartet, joined by pianist Jaromír Klepác.

Here she performs Schumann’s Carnaval and a selection of works by Chopin including the Ballade No.3, Nocturne No.13, Scherzo No.4 and the Fantaisie Op.49. All are animated by her lively, naturally virtuosic style. This program represents the very essence of the Romantic piano.

IMPORTIn his day, Hermann Scherchen was considered a pioneer of avant-garde music. However, he also regularly interpreted the works of Bach, Schoenberg and especially Mahler. He performed Mahler’s Fifth Symphony at his fi rst concert in Berlin in February of 1914 and at his last concert in Bremen in May of 1966. Over his 54-year career, his performances of all of Mahler’s symphonies totaled 89, and included 22 performances of Mahler’s fi fth. This new set from Tahra includes symphonies 1, 5 & 7 recorded in the mid 1950s.

IMPORTThis recording of Bruckner’s fi fth has been published several times by various companies, with many containing questionable sound quality. Closer investigation revealed that various sources lay behind those reissues. The present release is sourced from the original tape kept in the archive of Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg. The tape needed only minimal reworking, as the sound quality is very good. It is indeed quite astonishing how natural, transparent and full the orchestra sounds. After nearly seventy years, the odyssey of this recording concludes in time to commemorate Wilhelm Furtwängler’s 125th Anniversary year.

IMPORTAfter completing her studies, Spanish-born composer Elena Mendoza moved to Berlin. In addition to her work as a composer, she also teaches at the Universität der Künste Berlin. This new disc from Wergo includes a selection of scenes from her music theater stage work Niebla based on the novel of the same title by the Spanish author Miguel de Unamuno. Fe de erratas pursues the idea of inventing a musico-theatrical situation by constantly correcting things just heard. Gramática de lo indecible for instrumental ensemble was inspired by a saying by Wittgenstein that is interpolated into the composition at the end of the spoken material. Mendoza’s works are a sonic and semantic kaleidoscope of extraordinary sensual presence.

IMPORTThis CD is the fi rst recording of Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s complete vocal works. His eleven songs are interpreted here by renowned singer Anna Prohaska, who captivates the opera world with her light and lyric soprano voice. Never had Zimmermann been as close to the neo-romantic tonal language as he was in his songs. They refl ect both an expression of intimate feelings and his strong interest in literature. The CD also contains his early chamber music. Members of the Berlin Philharmonic, including the Trio Berlin, present his Trio, Kleine Suite and Aria and Sonate.

From the basis of this album, it sounds as if pianist Gene Harris, bassist Andrew Simpkins and drummer William Dowdy have been playing together for years. There is empathetic, nearly intuitive interplay between the three musicians and Harris’ deft style already sounds mature and entirely distinctive.

DOMESTICSACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDFile in: JazzSaxophonist Lou Donaldson is best known for his soulful, bluesy approach, although in his formative years he was, as many were of the bebop era, heavily infl uenced by Charlie Parker. First released in 1959, The Time is Right is a warm, mellow affair overall, defi nitely post-bop. His group features Horace Parlan on piano, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Laymon Jackson on bass and Dave Bailey on drums. IMPORTFile in: World / GypsyBratsch, formed in 1972 by guitarist Dan Gharibian and violinist Bruno Girard, has released more than ten albums to date. The group is renowned for the diversity of its musical infl uences and for the virtuosity of its members

and guest artists. Bratsch’s primary focus is on gypsy (Roma) music, but they blend in sounds from klezmer, jazz and many diverse folk traditions. Plein du Monde was originally issued by EMI in 2007 in celebration of Bratsch’s 35th anniversary. Instead of going with the usual ‘greatest hits’ concept, they decided to record an album of ‘duets.’ The album’s mix of traditional songs and originals and features guest appearances from famed vocalists including Khaled, Olivia Ruiz, Juliette, Lhasa and Charles Aznavour. IMPORTFile in: World / Europe / PortugalPor meu cante – the literal meaning of the t i t le i s “Through My Singing” – was recorded live and released in Portugal in 2004 to immediate critical acclaim. Today, in hindsight, this album reveals not only an outstanding vocalist, but also the key infl uences at the core of António Zambujo’s unique style: the cante of Alentejo (polyphonic singing from southern Portugal), Brazilian music and West Coast cool jazz. Zambujo further refi ned this blend in the albums that followed, Outro sentido (2008) and Guia (2010). Por meu cante is a seminal album for understanding how fado remains alive, blending with other types of contemporary music without ever losing its own identity.

IMPORTFile in: World / Middle East / IranSeven years after their previous recording, Persian percussionists Trio Chemirani return, nourished by their own rich musical experimentation and by meetings with musicians from around the globe. For their new album Invite, based upon a concert series of the same name, Trio Chemirani have put together a spectacular list of invitees, including kora master Ballaké Sissoko, jazz pianist Omar Sosa and Titi Robin on bouzouki. The musical interplay between these great artists is nothing short of revelatory.

IMPORTFile in: World / Africa / MoroccoKnown to many as “the diva of Arab song,” Moroccan singer Aïcha Redouane has been delighting Arab and Western audiences since the 90’s. A resident of France since her earliest childhood, Redouane has sung in various styles. In the late 80s, she devoted herself to the musical tradition of the Arab maqâm, establishing a name for herself not only as a singer but also as a qânun player. Her latest release, Maqâm d’amour, is based on 8th century poems written by the Sufi saint Râbi’a Al-’Adawiyya, but the message is timeless.

IMPORTFile in: World / Africa / MaliMalian guitarist Djelimady Tounkara is one of Africa’s fi nest musicians. He was one of the founders of the legendary Super Rail Band, a group that launched the careers of such greats as Salif Keita and Mory Kante. Solon Kôno, his second solo recording, features Tounkara giving free reign to his prodigious improvisational talents. He is accompanied by Samba Diabate on guitar, Mariam ‘M’Bau’ Tounkara, Mariam ‘Djodjo’ Diabate, Samba Sissoko and Mountaga Diabate on vocals. Originally released in 2005 on Marabi, Lusafrica’s reissue of this, his best solo album to date, is particularly welcome.

IMPORTFile in: World / Africa / SenegalBorn in Senegal to Cape Verdean parents, singer Mariana Ramos has enjoyed a very successful career. The music she was steeped in from childhood had a Cape Verdean beat, since her father, Toy Ramos, played guitar for the famous group Voz de Cabo Verde. Her music combines international infl uences with Cape Verdean tradition in a subtle blend of jazz, Brazilian music and African sounds. Ramos’ new album SuaviDança is a colorful program that features traditional Cape Verdean mornas and coladeras, as well as sambas and other global fl avors.
