Self Revolution
Sometimes I tuck my knees into my chest and lean forward. That’s just how I roll.
Happy New Year
Happy is the key word folks. 2018 is upon us and we can each make a difference. Starting within ourselves, we all know what we could use to tweak a little bit to make things go a bit smoother. Try to not compare yourself with anyone regarding anything. This means that you should not judge yourself or others. We are all different in so many ways and on com-
pletely different journeys. Just enjoy it. Of course it is all easier said than done but The Valley Peak promises you that every little change feels good. Be kind. Be under-standing. Be forgiving. Be helpful. Believe me, it is worth it.
Christmas Tree Disposal
The Kinsmen Club of Windermere Valley will be doing a curbside pickup of Christ-mas trees in Invermere and Lakeview Meadows this Saturday, January 6. Please have your trees at the curb by 9 am Saturday. Trees will be disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner. Donations will be gratefully accepted to support the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Valley Rally for Rob
I’ve mentioned before how supportive folks have been while I face my health chal-lenges. Trivia night at the Station Pub has a special place in my heart, and I’m touched to learn that my friends there are hosting a “Valley Rally for Rob” on Friday, January 12. It’s a music trivia fundraising evening, 8 pm-1 am, with a balloon raffle. $5/person with teams of 1-6 people. The winning team wins a pretty great prize package. Thank you to the Station Pub, their organ-izers, any contributors for doing this as well as thank you to whoever goes. Dona-tions can be made through Kaeleigh at 341-5536 or with Lianne at 341-7757.

I threw a boomerang a few years ago. It hasn’t come back yet. I now live in constant fear.
Gimme Some Puck
A new sponsor and a new name for the ‘Where’s the Puck?’ contest. Welcome to ‘Gimme Some Puck?” sponsored by ‘Gimme Some Sugar’. Every winner will now receive a package of delicious home-made chocolate treats from Margot, choco-latier extraordinaire. Winners also win hockey tickets, golf, res-taurant gifts and more. Check out page 8 for contest rules and results. Congratula-tions to last week’s winner, Andy Caruana. He will be enjoying golf, chocolate and live hockey.
Lake Windermere Update
Thanks to the Toby Creek Nordic Club and other community volunteers, nordic skiing tracks have been set from Kinsmen Beach to Rushmere. Please don’t use these tracks as a walkway: the tracks help skis glide properly. Locals and visitors have been skating on Lake Windermere for many weeks now. There’s an almost-flawless sheet of ice under that snow, with only the occasional rough patch. Dog-owners: please remember to carry bags and pick up after your four-legged family members when walking the lake, out of consideration for others.

Robservations
Well so here’s a problem. This is usually a really easy column as it is pretty much a ‘cut and paste’ from last year. ‘Happy New Year’, ‘make a few changes’ and so on. “Be nice to people’ is usually part of my theme also. So what sort of different thinking do I pre-sent in my current situation? I have been told what I am likely to die from (unless I can find another way). Multiple myeloma. But there is no real indication of when. Not for a long time yet, I can assure you of that. I am feeling great these days through the first round of chemo. The dialysis makes me feel really well. Anyways, how does this change my life? I believe I have been pretty good at seizing and enjoying the moments of life. When I’m not being a jerk, I try to be complimen-tary and helpful to people as often as pos-sible. There is a lot of joy in seeing some-one smile. So 2018, here I come. Will I be a whiny, bitchy boy who complains about little things? Of course I will, we all will. But I will be more aware of it and do it less of-ten. Maybe find amusement in those things and offer a smile, some support and some positive energy. Be really nice to people and change the world for yourself and eve-ryone around you. It will bring you joy.

Watson’s Wad-
dle
Happy New Year folks. I had a great evening with some friends and their mutts. Rob had bought me some new treats for Christmas and they came in a really fancy bag. They look
a lot like a homemade pepperoni. We get to the party and they have a lot of appies laid out for the humans, including a tray of meatballs and sausage. Of course I am digging into the dog dishes, trying to eat up all their pups’ food so they put the dishes out of reach, talking about how dif-ferent food can upset my tummy. So Rob pulls out this bag of treats and grabs four, one for each of us critters. He gives me one (they are so delicious with trout, rabbit and venison) and the other three go to his friend for the dogs. His friend thinks they are a new appie product that Rob is trialing so he takes a bite of one. Rob thought he was testing it himself for dog safety. Then he takes an-other bite, thinking ‘how do I tell Rob his friend’s new appies suck?’ while Rob is thinking, he is a very dedicated dog owner. I’m thinking, ‘give me that treat’. He then actually dips it in an appie sauce in order to force the rest of it down, puts the other two on the appie tray hoping his wife might try one and carries on. By now Rob was laughing and explaining they were dog treats. It was hilarious and I did get another one, just no dip on it.
What Year Was It?
The GST was introduced in Canada, the USSR dissolved into independent repub-lics and apartheid was dismantled in South Africa. Freddie Mercury (Queen lead singer) died of complications from AIDS, the airbag was invented and the first Starbucks Cof-fee opened in California. What year was it? See page 10.

How Am I Actually Doing?
Many of you folks wonder how things are going for me these days. It is difficult to stay in touch with everyone from this far away so here is a quick update. My first cycle of five chemo hits is done. It really went quite easy with very few issues. Scheduling for dialysis is around it so my chemo stays in me for a couple days be-fore my other toxins are removed from my blood. The dialysis does make me feel much better. I am at Trail hospital 4 to 6 days a week so quite a bit of time on the road. A bit more of a barrier if I am in Invermere and travel-ling to Cranbrook. I am now waiting on bloodwork results to see if the chemo is having any effect on the bone marrow cancer which could po-tentially get my kidneys back up and run-ning. Overall I am a bit low on energy, but hey, who isn’t at this age? I am very high in spirit right now. The blessings and support I see around me are everywhere and in-credible. Watson has been an amazing support as well. The isolation from you folks, my friends is the worst part. Boredom and loneliness. I really appreciate any notes and messages. Thanks for everything.
Morning Routine
Instead of the John I call my bathroom the Jim. That way it sounds better when I say I go to the gym first thing every morning.

Rockies Hockey
The Columbia Valley Rockies are coming off a couple big wins against Golden to solidify their place in the standings. It was a good way to finish 2017. Upcoming they are hosting the Rockets this Saturday, January 6 at 7:30 pm. It will be a great start to 2018 for the guys. Make sure you get down there and support them as it makes a difference with your voice in the stands. The players can always hear you up there. Plus you can win some great prizes every game. It is always fun to be a winner while cheering on a team of winners. You will always see lots of friends in the stands. The Rockies are going to have a strong remainder of the season and it will be fun to a part of it. Have a great time folks.
Healthy Eating in 2018
I ate a salad for dinner. Mostly croutons and tomatoes. Really, just one big, round crouton covered with tomato sauce. And cheese. Fine, it was a pizza. I ate a pizza.

Teego, reporting for ICAN Rescue and Adoption Facility. Reduced adoption fees until January 15 for our adult (1 year +) cats! You can choose between a half off adoption fee of $50 or pay the full $100 adoption fee and receive a free bag of cat food ($50 value). Let’s find these cats a home for the new year. Adoption fee includes spay/neuter; ICAN does not promote giving pets as a surprise gift at any time of year. All family members must know about and agree to get a new pet before adoption will be final-ized. To learn more and fill out the e-card order form visit our website at www.icanbc.com, our Facebook page or call 250-341-7888.
Family Competition
It was fun playing cards with my family during the holidays. I had forgotten how competitive my Mom is and it was good to see the same traits in my sister. We played a lot of games as a family as I grew up. Board games, card games and more. It was always fun and gives us something to look forward to at gatherings. Family together time is always good time. Try it.

My Actual Treatments
I have been doing lots of research on what can help with treatments for can-cer. My chemo is relatively easy, a quick injection in the belly and a bunch of pills. Some of the pills are a steroid that is supposed to limit side effects of the chemo but produces its own issues. I am supplementing treatment with a healthy eating style including lots of raw veggies full of antioxidants, lemon water to raise body ph, turmeric which fights many forms of cancer and phoe-nix tears, a form of cannabis oil proven to fight many cancers plus it helps with nausea and insomnia, side effects of the chemo and steroids. I am also try-ing to keep up lots of dog walks for exercise. It is a completely different journey for everyone and I hope that you are en-joying sharing mine a little bit.

Riddliculous Answer
(From page 2) There are twelve seconds in a year. January 2nd, February 2nd, March 2nd, April 2nd, May 2nd, June 2nd, July 2nd, August 2nd, September 2nd, October 2nd, November 2nd and Decem-ber 2nd.
Which Am I?
A gossip is one who talks to you about others, a bore is one who talks to you about himself; and a brilliant conversation-alist is one who talks to you about yourself.
Feeling Fundy?
The Bay of Fundy has a lot of highs and a lot of lows. So do we all. A lot of folks are doing a lot to support me right now and it brings a lot of crazy mixed feelings, both high and low. Do I need support? Of course I do. Every-one does every day. It is good to support people. Do I need financial support? That is a tricky question to answer. I am definitely incurring some heavy travel expenses and a few medical expenses (most of my medi-cations are covered at this point). And it is difficult to manage my business finances being this far from my clients. The bills do keep coming. But I am not in totally dire straits yet (I did-n’t waste much at Christmas). Things are slowly building up and I really appreciate what you can do for me but please don’t give what you don’t have. Pay your bills and send me the love.
Inner Critic to Inner Coach
There are a couple complimentary work-shops coming up. ‘Inner Critic to Inner Coach’ will be running at the Fairmont Li-ons Den on Tuesday, January 23 and Co-lumbia Garden Village on Wednesday, January 24.

Electric vehicle drivers will now find it much more convenient to explore the Co-lumbia Valley, thanks to new electric vehi-cle charging stations in Canal Flats and Radium Hot Springs. These two new DC fast charging stations, plus one in Cran-brook, are the only three fast chargers currently available in the Kootenays.
Great Spirits
Enjoy locally crafted spirits at Taynton Bay Spirits located below the Station Neighbourhood Pub. The are open Mon-day to Saturday, from 9 am to 5 pm and are available to book special events any-time. It is a great spot.

Getting Home
One of my main focuses right now is find-ing a way to get back to living in the valley. Needing constant treatments in Cranbrook is a lot of travelling, especially at this time of year. Depending on how my kidneys respond I may go to a different type of di-alysis that can be managed from home. A tough part will be making sure I eat prop-erly. It is so much easier with mom prep-ping meals for me. So a heads up to all you givers. If you are anxious to help me, good homemade meals will be greatly ap-preciated.
Happy Birthday
To my brother Andrew (January 8) in Kelowna. It was nice seeing him this year. There are times that he is more entertain-ing than annoying.
Yarn Wanted
When you’re cleaning out the closets, put aside those extra balls of yarn: Happy Hands knitting and crocheting group at Columbia Garden Village is looking for donations of yarn. The group meets every Wednesday in the activity room, from 1:30-3:30 pm. New members are welcome.
Where I Was
The photo on page six is similar to one from November. But it is a photo of where I am a few times a week, at the Trail hospital dialysis unit. This place has saved my life and become a major part of it. Thanks.
Real Realtors
If you are thinking of buying or selling in the Columbia Valley, talk to the guys at Century 21, Rockies Realty located in Ra-dium. Scott, Ken, Dave and Joe know the valley very well and can help you find what you want. You can find their contact infor-mation in their page 9 ad.
Math
Only a fraction understands that there’s a fine line between a numerator and a de-nominator.
Free Tech Support
Do you need some technical help with a computer issue? Want to see family photos and hear the latest family news on social media? The Invermere Public Library offers a free drop-in technical support program every Saturday afternoon, 2-4 pm. Bring your basic questions and someone will be happy to work through them with you.
Feed the Town
The cash donations from Copper Point’s Feed the Town fundraiser on December 3 have been tallied up, with a grand total of $3,756.58 going to the Columbia Valley Food Bank. This is in addition to the huge amount of food donations collected during the event. To keep supporting our local food bank, add a $5 or $10 food care pack-age to your grocery cart at AG Valley Foods or Sobeys, and donate it to support our neighbours in need. We all go through hard times in our lives.
Slippery Conditions
It is winter in Canada, including here in the valley. So when you are planning an excur-sion, consider the road conditions. You probably don’t even have to ask anyone how the roads are because, well, it is win-ter and they are slippery.
So give yourself some extra time. Drive carefully. Things can happen in an instant that can change many lives forever. Please drive to arrive.
