Last two phases of the cell cycle:
M phase (mitosis)
and
Cytokinesis.
![Page 4: HAPPY MONDAY Bellwork: Draw and fill in the missing blanks with the following words G1 PhaseG2 PHASES PHASEM PHASE HAPPY MONDAY Bellwork: Draw and fill.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081603/56649f1b5503460f94c30992/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Mitosis (M phase): division of the
nucleus
Cytokinesis: the cytoplasm divides and
2 new identical cells are produced
![Page 5: HAPPY MONDAY Bellwork: Draw and fill in the missing blanks with the following words G1 PhaseG2 PHASES PHASEM PHASE HAPPY MONDAY Bellwork: Draw and fill.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081603/56649f1b5503460f94c30992/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Mitosis is divided
into four phases:
prophase,
metaphase,
anaphase, and
telophase (PMAT).

Prophase: chromosomes (coiled DNA) are visible and the nuclear
envelope is gone.

Metaphase, the chromosomes line up across
the center (middle) of the cell.
Anaphase: the sister chromatids split and the
chromosomes move away into two groups
near the poles of the cell.
So, each chromosome consists of 2
identical sister chromatids.

Telophase: the nuclear envelopes reappear to form two new nuclei
(nuclei = more than 1 nucleus)

Let’s practice…
• On the back of your page, number 1-5.
• On the next slide, you will see 5 pictures.
• You need to figure out what phase each one is in and write it down.

Card Sort
• Place the “CELL CYCLE” card in the middle of your table.
• Place the numbered picture cards in a circle around it, in the order you think they belong.
• Place the description cards with the pictures you think they are describing.
• As we go through the PowerPoint, make corrections as needed and place the phase names in their proper order.

What is cancer?Uncontrolled cell growth.
![Page 18: HAPPY MONDAY Bellwork: Draw and fill in the missing blanks with the following words G1 PhaseG2 PHASES PHASEM PHASE HAPPY MONDAY Bellwork: Draw and fill.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081603/56649f1b5503460f94c30992/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
What is cancer?
Cancer is a disorder in which some cells lose the
ability to control growth (cell division).
The cell cycle has broken down and does not
function properly.
![Page 19: HAPPY MONDAY Bellwork: Draw and fill in the missing blanks with the following words G1 PhaseG2 PHASES PHASEM PHASE HAPPY MONDAY Bellwork: Draw and fill.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081603/56649f1b5503460f94c30992/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
How does cancer happen?
1. Cancer cells divide uncontrollably2. These cells form masses of cells called tumors3. Tumors damage surrounding (healthy) tissue
![Page 20: HAPPY MONDAY Bellwork: Draw and fill in the missing blanks with the following words G1 PhaseG2 PHASES PHASEM PHASE HAPPY MONDAY Bellwork: Draw and fill.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081603/56649f1b5503460f94c30992/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
How does cancer affect your body?
After a certain point, cells from the tumor get loose and spread throughout an organism’s body. This is called metastasis.
![Page 21: HAPPY MONDAY Bellwork: Draw and fill in the missing blanks with the following words G1 PhaseG2 PHASES PHASEM PHASE HAPPY MONDAY Bellwork: Draw and fill.](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081603/56649f1b5503460f94c30992/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
What can cause cancer?
Cancer can be caused by
1. tobacco
2. radiation (genetic mutations)
3. viral infection.
