Think twice

A blog entry

LESSON 7

San Juan is a very popular festival in Paraguay. It wasn’t a Guaraní celebration, but we adopted it. There is lots of music, dance and typical food in this festival.

In the afternoon of the previous day, we prepare a big fire. People sit around the fire, drink mate and eat typical food. We play games and jump over the fire when it is small, of course. When there aren’t any flames in the fire, some people walk with no shoes over the red hot embers and shout, ‘Viva San Juan.’ People think it is exciting but I don’t – I am very scared.

I like this festival very much. Visit Paraguay and come to the celebration!

Comments [3]

the Spaniards and the Natives (the Diaguitas) in 1593. Two

processions walk across the town. One group represents the

Spaniards. They carry the image of St Nicholas. The other

group represents the Diaguitas. They carry the Alcalde Niño.

The ‘Spaniards’ wear a band on their chest and the ‘Diaguitas’

wear colourful headbands with mirrors.

The two groups meet at the Government House and sing

traditional songs in Spanish and Quechua. The people are very

2 Sue is a reporter for Teen Magazine. She is interviewing Dr Joan Goodeating, a nutritionist. Read the interview and write True or False.

3 Answer about you.

1 There is food you can’t eat.

2 Spaghetti helps our digestion.

3 Exercise is important.

4 Water isn’t necessary.

1 Do you eat healthy food?

2 How many meals do you have every day?

3 Do you exercise regularly? What do you do?

The eatwell plate

Sue: Dr Goodeating, what is the eatwell plate?

Dr G: It’s an easy way to learn about healthy eating.

Sue: What does it show?

Dr G: It indicates the quantity you should eat. All food is good but in different quantities. For example, cereals and pasta give you energy. Fruit and vegetables help your digestion. Milk products have calcium and make you strong. Meat and eggs also make you strong.

Sue: Are cookies and chocolate bad?

Dr G: No, of course not, but don’t eat a lot of sweet things. Fruits are good snacks to eat every day. And remember: drink lots of water, have tea or coffee with little or no sugar, and exercise regularly.

Sue: Thank you very much.

Dr G: You’re welcome.
