Some BIG, BIG NEWS ANNOUNCEMENTS!

We had a full house again last month at the Gen-eral Meeting. Thanks to everyone who came to hear several speakers provide valuable information and updates pertinent to EEV. We covered many top-ics including the ongoing discussion of the Special Assessment Districts, crime reporting, the DIA events and the Alger and Youth programs. On Sept. 24, we hosted “Pedal to Porch” and EEV was featured in “THE HUB” publication and on “Curb” with stunning prop-erties for sale.

We have some exciting news to share. Mayor Mike Duggan will be our guest speaker for the October meeting. Mayor Duggan will be covering the lat-est update for the City of Detroit and our village. We will also review the rental property program and hear details of our upcoming Angels Night patrol and potluck. We are inviting all residents to decorate for the Annual EEV Halloween Home Decorating Contest.

Judging will take place on the evening of Oct. 28. We hope to see all of you participate in some way in our annual Angels Night program. Kathy Roddie, our Residential Chair, will cover more details at the General Meeting. The annual EEVA Holiday party will be held on Sunday, Dec. 11, at St. Clare Montefalco Church. This is a great gathering and celebration of EEV neighbors. It is always a fun evening with great food and even greater community spirit. Don’t forget to put this date on your calendar.

It’s that time of season again where, as happy homeowners, we rush to finish summer projects before the leaves fall and winter 2016 sets in. Please pay special attention to gutters and downspouts as well as trees that need to be trimmed. PLEASE NOTE: repairing vehicles in the street or parking cars and trucks on lawns is not allowed by city code and frankly has many neigh-bors upset. Driveways or garages should be utilized to facilitate your car needs.

Trash cans must be pulled back behind the line of the home. We are again asking city inspectors to handle this issue. Residents should not have to deal with a trash can being left out under their windows, thanks to the next-door neighbor.

Our EEV Walking Club will be starting back up again on Saturdays through the first week in December. We have had a great re-sponse to the weekly walks, and we encourage all to participate when you can. As always, check with your doctor before starting any exercise program. More in-formation will be provided at the General Meeting, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m.

Remind your neighbors to help keep up the village streets and drains open by clearing leaves – it all makes a difference! Review the Rizzo yard waste pickup schedule, posted in our newsletter, on EEV's Face-book page and Nextdoor.

Halloween Spooktacular returns

Again, summer just flew by for me and now the days are shorter with winter fast approaching. Thankfully, it is still a ways off. Meanwhile, we are blessed with a BEAU-TIFUL autumn. The days have been glorious and the nights invigorating —guess I really do like this time of year! Now, let’s get down to the “Nitty Gritty” of the month of October – HALLOWEEN!

Halloween equals lots of fun for the wee ghosties and goblins, but perhaps a stressful time for our furry friends. Dedicated to protecting their homes and families, all of the noise and com-motion may appear to

be threatening or over-stimulating to some dogs. Be aware of this and treat them with the care their individual need requires. For example, bring them indoors, confine them away from the front door to prevent them from in-nocently harming one of the little trick or treaters.

And last but certainly not least, some treats can harm or even be LETHAL to dogs and cats. Most pet owners are aware of the potential danger of chocolate, but many do not know that the additive XYLITOL can cause an ex-tremely painful and rapid medical condition result-ing in death. This product is a sugar alcohol often

used in chewing gum and some candies marketed as “sugar free.” So, if you share your spoils of the night with Fido, be certain these are safe and not harmful to pets. Especially check for Xylitol, please. ‘til next month ~ Karlene

your labors and seeing a nicely main-tained home with trimmed shrubbery, cleaned gutters, replaced light bulbs and maybe even some fresh paint? Or, like me, you’re obfuscating and claiming you’re waiting for cooler temperatures to get down to busi-ness?!

Please know that neat shrubbery makes for less hiding places for bad elements, working side/porch lights thwart prying eyes, cleaned gutters/drains eliminate house leaks, vigilant eyes belong to educated folks who are better equipped not only to protect themselves, but their neighbors. Hey, be self-serving and use the motto, “If You See Something, Say Something.” The Detroit Police Dept. (DPD) Fifth Precinct Front Desk phone is 313-596-5501. In case of emergency - dial 911.

How else can you help yourself? Join us in our efforts to build our ranks for the City-Wide CB Radio Patrol in our community. This is the DPD connected CB Radio Patrol. EEV has nearly 2100 homes and not nearly enough residents who now volun-teer to (drive) patrol our community. Please contact me for details and/or to sign up.

The Annual Angels Night Patrol and Potluck will be Saturday-Sunday, October 29-30, from 6 p.m.-midnight (both nights). We will again be work-ing from 4240 Kensington (thank you, Bill). For those who signed up at the September EEV General Meeting, you will be contacted regarding your time preferences and the two-day sched-ule. We need more drivers! Did you know that over 90% of the larcenies in the 5th Precinct have

been vehicular – where this crime of opportunity speedily occurs when a careless citizen leaves her/his be-longings (purse, cell phone, laptop, bag, etc.) out on a car seat, runs into an establishment and upon return finds a broken windowed vehicle and missing items? Can you hear the screamed expletives?

Or, that a perpetrator will less likely “hit” a person who’s walking alertly, confidently and with intent. So, when out in public, get on with

your business. When in an establish-ment, do not flaunt your cash as there might be someone watching. Don’t dilly-dally with your smart phone, have your car keys in your hand when exiting a store or you’ll make a target of yourself. Are you being over anxious or smart?

The East English Village Garden Club enjoyed an afternoon at 3 Sisters Farm on Sunday, September 25. Master Gardener, and one of the co-owners, Beckie Themer talked about how the farm was started and gave us a tour,

pointing out the tremendous variety of vegetables, flowers, and fruit trees grown there. A frequent remark was “I can’t believe I am still in the city!” Members were able to harvest a few beets, eggplant, toma-toes and squash to take home. We enjoyed a taco salad and s’mores made over the firepit to end a magical afternoon meeting at 3 Sisters Farm. Thank you to Beckie, Helen, Tim and Marie for your hospi-tality and hard work.

The final meeting of the EEV Garden Club will be our Annual Fall Potluck and host-ed by Alexis Adams-Wynn. We will also discuss plans and goals for 2017, so come pre-pared with ideas. hard to protect us and keep us safe, but it’s our job to help — yes, help our officers! Leaving porch lights on and parking cars in the back yard or garage is a start. For the most part, posting on Facebook is not an effective manner to resolve an issue. Taking some positive action is a step in the right direction to keeping us all happy and secure in our community. Please take the time to call and help us with the patrol for Hallow-een and throughout the week. Pay for the security service, which is a deter-rent to crime that continues to work for us. And a last but simple thought — take a moment to meet your neighbor! You have to start somewhere.

Thanks to all the EEVA board members and to you — the engaged

residents — who work so hard all the time on projects to promote and move the village forward. We all have so many things on our plate these days but it makes a positive impact where you and I call home! We have an out-standing neighborhood with incred-ible people. It’s our time to shine!

I wanted to share with you the sad and ever present danger our police officers contend with every day. The 9th Precinct and the entire City of Detroit lost a hero last month. Captain Kenneth Steil was on the mend from gunshot injuries received in the line of duty on Sept. 12. He encountered unforeseen complications and passed away on Sept. 17. Captain Steil, known as “Shark,” was a master diver and a member of the Special Operations and Underwater Recovery teams.

A few years ago, when we were part of the DPD Eastern District, we had

the pleasure of working with him on a project called “Broken Windows.” We will always appreciate and value the time spent with this team that includ-ed Captain Steil. He had great ideas and was always engaged in making us better. He, like so many we work with in the Detroit Police Department and other agencies, was an exceptional individual — human in all aspects, something we tend to forget some days. We will have a moment of si-lence to honor Captain Steil at the start of our General Meeting and cards to sign and send. EEV provided food and beverages to the 9th Precinct in the days leading up to the funeral Sept. 25. Rest in peace Captain Steil. Pleasekeep his young family, his friends andhis brothers and sisters in blue in yourthoughts and prayers.
