EEVA and Detroit Resi- dential Property Rentals - we are requesting all resi- dents to attend our October general meeting to learn more about some great news for EEV on residential rental code charges that will affect you as a resident of EEV. Please join us as we review a new property program and hear details of our annual December Holiday Party. It’s that time of season again where as happy home- owners we rush to finish summer projects before the leaves fall and winter 2015 sets in. Please pay attention to gutters and downspouts as well as trees that need to be trimmed, etc. Re- mind your neighbors to help maintain the Village streets and drains during the fall season by clearing leaves and debris on a regular ba- sis – it all makes a difference in everyday life. One of our October special guest speak- ers will be a representative from Lowe’s to cover sea- sonal projects and holiday items. Our Annual EEV Landscape Contest was held in September. Big thanks to all the residents who par- ticipated this summer – we had many wonderful look- ing properties nominated, including owner-occupied as well as lease properties. Please join us at the General Meeting to hear who won the top three residential spots this year. We had new signs printed this year for the event, as mentioned in the September newsletter. We had hoped to have at least one winner on each block where applicable. Detroit’s First Annual Gatsby Lawn Party took place on Sunday, September 13, in Palmer Park. Musicians, performers and menu reflected De-troit’s Golden Age of Jazz. Beverage proceeds from this event were donated to the Alger The-ater's Patronicity Campaign.

Old-timey party helps Alger restoration As reported at the last

General Meeting, EEVA was the recipient of a special Grants’ Award to develop an empty neighborhood lot into an outdoor fitness space. Latisha Johnson was the initiator in submitting the application on behalf of EEVA and the catalyst that resulted in this spe-cial space. Through the blood, sweat and tears of Latisha and a number of residents, the ground was leveled, posts were dug, white picket fencing placed, exercise equipment installed and flowers planted!

Thanks go out to Jerry Chiap-arro, Kathy Roddie, Curtis Bibb, Alexis Adams-Wynn, Fred Petz, Germaine Cortes, Bill Barlage, Paul Garrison, Lashanda West and Connie and Will Peecher for their hard work!

The EEV neighbors are the

beneficiaries of this effort and the hope is that many will utilize the park. The Fitness Park Ribbon Cutting will take place at the site located at the corner of Cadieux and Cornwall (one block south of Warren) on Saturday, October 10, at 10 a.m. Please plan on attend-ing this important quality of life community event!

Pet corner

Halloween! Ghosts and goblins and witches AND all kinds of eerie noises! Lots of fun for the kid-dies, but the evening can be a frightening time for some animals. If possible, bring Rover and Felix in the house away from the noise and commotion of the trick-or-treaters. Most dogs are committed to protecting their home, and they may mistake the little goblins as a threat to the household. If they are nervous or excitable, keep them in a back room or under control so they do not mistakenly harm some-one. If you are disguising yourself, let your pet see that it is YOU inside of that frightening or unusual cos-tume.

Now we come to the treat part of Halloween. Love your pets but know that candy may be bad for them. Chocolates, particularly, can make them sick (although two of my dogs got into and ate the better part of a two-pound box of chocolates and were none the worse for it). Some candies contain an ingredient, Xylitol, which IS toxic to animals. Of course alcohol is also a “no-no” for our beloved pets.

One other thing, please be careful with burning can-dles. Furry tails and open flames can spell disaster, and burns and fires are no way to celebrate Halloween. “BOO TO ALL” and have a fun and safe Halloween Holiday!

Halloween can be extra scary for pets

Halloween – think Can-dy. Candy – think Detroit. Detroit Candy – think Sanders & Morley, home of candy making since 1875 & 1919 respectively!

Morley Candy Makers is the place where Sanders chocolates and confections are now created. The free factory tour is perfect for all ages and can be cus-tomized to fit any group's requirements. Their facil-ity is also handicap acces-sible. Each tour includes: a Video Presentation (18 min) beginning with the story of chocolate, how chocolate is made and how Sanders and Morley Candy Makers got their start in Detroit; Observa-tion Hallway gives visitors an opportunity to watch the expert candy makers create luscious treats; Free Chocolate Samples (THE BEST PART) allows you to indulge in a free treat while learning how your

favorite chocolates are made AND finally, a stop at the unique Candy & Gift Shop gives you the oppor-tunity to indulge in a few more samples and take home treats for yourself or those who were not lucky enough to join you on this great tour.

Tour times vary w/production schedules so advance reservations are required. Call 1-800-682-2760 to schedule your tour experience. The Morley Candy Makers Factory is located at 23770 Hall Road, Clinton Twp, MI 48036. They also offer self-guided and “Stop & Shop” tours Monday through Friday (excluding holidays).

Now doesn’t this have all the ingredients for a future EEVA Field Trip that the entire family can enjoy? (With sincere apologies to our dedicated EEV Walkers)

EEV Garden Club members enjoyed a tour of Hidden Lake Gardens in Tipton, Michigan. The tour was re-scheduled to Sat-urday, Sept. 12. Though it was a bit overcast and cool, it was com-fortable weather for walking and light showers did not begin until the tour was concluded!

We began with a bit of shop-ping and picking up our gourmet sack lunches in Tecumseh before heading to the gardens.

Hidden Lake Gardens, now owned and operated through Michigan State University, be-gan in 1926 as a private nursery and gardens of Harry Fee. The

gardens and arboretum have expanded to 755 acres. The Gar-dens feature special collections of Bonsai, Hostas and Dwarf and Rare Conifers. We were also fortunate to have as our guide and teacher Julie Conley, Educa-tion Coordinator of Hidden Lake Gardens. The Gardens sponsor a plant sale in the spring, so there was talk of a return trip next year.

The Garden Club will con-clude the season with our An-nual Potluck on Sunday, Oct. 25. Michelle Williams will be our hostess. We will also begin plan-ning 2016 Garden Club activities.

5th Precinct Police-Community Relations

CouncilThe 5th Precinct Police-Community Relations Council

meets every first Wednesday of the month at the Samaritan Center at 5555 Conner, Detroit, MI 48213. The next meeting will take place on Wednesday, October 7, 2015, at 7 p.m.

Board of Police Commissioner Willie Bell (and EEV resident), DPD Captain Mark Bliss and our own Neighborhood Police Officers (NPOs) are typically in attendance. In addition, Bill Barlage and Latisha Johnson are currently serving on the Community Relations Board.

Consider attending and bringing your concerns and ideas to this or a future 5th Precinct Police-Community Relations Meeting.

This is YOUR Precinct, and we need to continue fostering our strong partnership w/our fine DPD officers. This is a terrific and appropriate forum to address safety and quality of life issues within EEV and our neighboring communities.

Fall temperatures are upon us and once again folks are daydreaming about ghosts and goblins . . . AND the Annual EEV Angels Night Patrol and Potluck!

Unlike the City of Detroit’s citywide three-day event, EEV will be patrolling the two nights prior to Halloween: Thursday, Oct. 29, and Friday, Oct. 30, from 6 p.m.-midnight both nights. Join fellow EEVers in “driving our neighborhood streets” to keep our homes and residents under our watchful eyes. Additionally, bring a dish to pass! This has been a well-received and strongly partici-pated annual event in EEV. You can commit to any combination

of drive times: one hour on one day, one hour each day, two hours on one day or six hours on both days! We would love to have you!

Don’t forget the Annual EEV Halloween Home Decorations Contest. EEV always has many homes bedecked for this holi-day. Judging will occur on Hal-loween night.

TROL AND POTLUCKThursday, Oct. 29 and Friday,

Harvard Block captains Bettina & Ethan and Da-vid & Michael hosted the 4th Annual block party on Saturday, July 18. The weather was perfect! We had the famous Cool Whip Eating Contest along with other games. An added attraction this year included a DJ so we hustled our hips off. The food was great. The contest this year was "The Best Cakes" and David Teeter took home honors.

Thanks to all who participated. See you in the street next year.

any exercise program. We will be ex-panding the Walking Club to Thurs-day night after so many requests for a midweek evening program.

Please join us at the October meet-ing to hear details. We still need vol-unteers to help with the exercise park and the fencing going up to beautify the grounds of the open properties in the village. We are in the process of creating a volleyball court as well. Remember to decorate for the annual Halloween Home Decorating Con-test. Judging will take place on the evening of October 30. Kathy Roddie, our Residential Chair, will cover de-tails at the next meeting. As in the past, Gwen Wee, our Security Chair, is again coordinating efforts to cover security driving throughout the village during our Annual Angels' Night(s) Program on October 29-30. If you’ve driven in the past, you know what a rewarding and fun evening this can be (with the bonus of indulging in an outstanding pot luck supper and catching up with neighbors). We hope to see many famil-iar faces volunteering again this year. If you’ve never experienced this event, PLEASE PLEASE consider coming on board this year. We hope to see all of you participate in some way in our an-nual Angels Night Program. (See Gwen

Wee’s article on Page 7 for details). See you at the next Town Hall Gen-

eral Meeting on October 14 at 7 p.m. On a simple but important note, our 5th Precinct of the Detroit Police De-partment is working hard at keeping us safe and protected. It’s your job to help – YES – help! Porch lights on and cars in the back yard or garage is a start. For the most part, posting com-plaints and concerns on Facebook is not an effective manner to resolve an issue. SOOOO many residents don’t have issues – taking some positive ac-tion is a step in the right direction to keeping EEV great. Please take the time to call and help us not only with the pa-trol for Halloween but every week and

also pay for the security service, which truly is a deterrent that continues to work for us. And a last thought: take the time to meet your neighbors... you have to start somewhere.Sincere thanks to all the EEVA board members and to you, the engaged residents, who con-sistently show up and work so hard on projects that promote, add value and move our village forward! We all have so many things on our plates these days, but these efforts do make a posi-tive impact on this place that you and I call home! We are a great neighborhood with incredible people – it’s our time to shine!

Best regards,— Bill Barlage, President
