Message from Cantor Socolof At the beginning of parshat Vayetze, the Torah says (Genesis 28:10): “And Jacob left Be’er Sheva and went to Haran.” Rashi points out that it is not necessary to write anything more than “And Jacob went to Haran.” Why mention his departure? It is in order to tell us that when a righteous person leaves a place it makes an impression. This month marks the end of Rabbi Cassi Kail’s tenure as the spiritual leader of Temple Emanu-El. She has served them well, invigorating their worship, their educational programs and their involvement with social issues. Her deep passion for Judaism has been manifested in numerous ways, from one-on-one interactions to working with larger groups to being a representative of the Jewish community in our area. By its nature, a pastoral job exacts a toll on those performing it, emotionally and sometimes physically. Nothing is free, and there has been a price on this as well, and Rabbi Kail has paid it. Perhaps the dearest payment has been the time away from her husband and children, often on a moment’s notice. On a personal note, she has been a valued colleague, always available to discuss matters professional or personal. While appreciating that our congregations represent differing approaches to implementing Torah, we have been able to work together to further the interests of the larger Jewish community. I am thankful for her insight and her comity. It is the nature of the clergy that those who serve rarely spend their whole career with one congregation. In some ways this is a good thing; it allows for growth through a breadth of experience. Unfortunately, it also can mean that a congregation and a rabbi who have worked together to build a strong relationship that has benefitted both must part

ways. The bridges that Rabbi Kail built, within and outside of the Jewish community, will remain, even when she has gone elsewhere to infuse another community with her love for Judaism. We in Utica will miss Rabbi Kail; her strength, her compassion, her music, her concern. We might consider the words of Pascal Mercier: “We leave something of ourselves behind when we leave a place; we stay there, even though we go away.” So we do not say goodbye, but rather, l’hitraot, until we meet again.

Temple Beth El President’s Message The annual congregational meeting will be held on June 6th. Please make your reservation for supper, which will be served at 6:00PM with the meeting to follow. Since I have been president, I have tried to bring our small Jewish community together with joint activities to share with everyone. Recently, I wrote this quote on a piece of paper. I believe it came from the author, Boris Fishman “When you only have a little thread, you have to know how to make a whole blanket”. There were many activities during the last two months offered by the Jewish community. The Purim Party, Passover Seder, the Sperling Holocaust Memorial Lecture, the Walk for Israel, the Schwartz Kallah/Waldman Lecture, Dinner and a Movie, Library Talk, the Retro Radio Show and the Joint Shavuot Celebration to name a few. Some are more important to us than others and yet if we do not support them, who will? We find ourselves busy with the things we choose. Should we think more closely about what we are choosing to do with our time in order to feel like a Jewish community?

Page 3

Mordechai Rosenstein and me. What a terrific time together. Check out his beautiful art online.

I have heard people say, “Temple should be more than just services”. It can be with your support.

Our Jewish community has many “little threads” and if we could only weave them together, we could make a “whole blanket”.

Before I sign off, I would like to wish Joe Silberlicht all the best as he leaves his presidency. It was a pleasure sharing the experience. I look forward to working together with Pam Vescera for our community.

Shalom, Marsha

The family of Edith Grundel would like to thank the Jewish Community at large for all their love and support and especially all the minyannaires who came mornings and evenings to help us have a daily minyan twice a day throughout our 7 day shiva. Thank you for all your kind words, calls, messages and food. Your support is greatly appreciated. Erich & Ralph Grundel. Judy & Mel Oster Thank you to the Grundel/Oster Family for their generous contribution of wine and cheese for the Waldman Lecture / Schwartz Kallah in memory of their mother, Edith Grundel.

I thank you for your concern and caring, the cards, donations and the calls. As we know, there is no place like the Utica area and Temple Beth El. The Congregational Meeting is on June 6th and I look forward to seeing many of you, we will be serving a Dairy Supper, so please make your reservations soon. Again thank you, it is a pleasure to be part of the Temple Beth El family. Most Sincerely Mundy
