Pick up any newspaper, listen to any new cast and you hear or read about the crisis of health care. As I have done in the past with any dramatic change to the landscape of health care, today I will review the proposed Senate’s plan to replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or Obamacare. This is not a Democrat or Republican issue for any of us it is about CARE for the people in our States. So whether you are politically RED, BLUE or PURPLE, these changes will affect you or someone you know. From AARP: “Senate leadership unveiled its version of a replacement for the ACA, producing a bill that would allow insurers to charge older Americans extra for coverage while reducing subsidies and slashing Medicaid, which provides health care to 1 in 5 Americans. The sweeping Better Care Reconciliation Act of 2017 also would allow states to waive important consumer protections including essential health benefits. This would allow insurance companies to no longer offer or drastically increase the cost of the coverage people need and depend on, particularly those with preexisting conditions. At the same time, the Senate bill would give billions of dollars in tax breaks to the health industry and wealthy individuals The Senate bill would restructure the Medicaid program, which provides health care coverage for 74 million poor and low-income adults, children, pregnant women and people with disabilities. Medicaid also pays for long-term care services and supports, including home- and community- based care, and covers two-thirds of the care for people living in nursing homes. The bill would phase out the additional federal funding for 31 states and Washington, D.C., receive to expand their Medicaid populations. This phase out would leave States with huge deficits to pay for this CARE.” From the AMA: “Medicine has long operated under the precept of Primum non nocere, or ‘first, do no harm.’ The draft legislation violates that standard on many levels,” American Medical Association CEO James Madara wrote to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.). The physicians’ lobbying organization cites numerous problems with the Senate bill, starting with its likely effect of causing many millions of currently insured Americans to lose their health coverage and be unable to afford medical treatments. The bill also would permit states to make sweeping changes to insurance market rules, which would allow insurance companies to offer very skimpy plans that don’t come with a basic set of guaranteed benefits and that could exclude treatments and medicines for people with high-cost ailments.” From Insurance Companies in a shared letter to the Senate: Premiums will skyrocket for preexisting conditions. They warn middle-class families would be exposed to skyrocketing premiums. So what do we do? Where do we go from here? Read, educate yourself on the choices. Follow the lead of organizations that you trust. I have presented here the AMA and AARP but thousands have weighed in on these plan changes. Obviously, because of the proposed Medicaid program cuts and the devastation this plan would cause to Nursing Homes and our residents, most groups in our field of health care oppose this plan. “Liz, you will be missed…”On May 30th, 2017, our beloved nurse, Elizabeth Kyler passed away peacefully in her sleep. For over 25 years Elizabeth has had a successful career as a nurse. Ms. Kyler devoted herself to Briar Place for the last 12. She will forever be remembered for her kindness, consideration and compassion to help others.

Welcome Arthur Please help us provide Arthur Coon a warm welcome as our new MDS Coordinator. Arthur has spent the last few years working in long term care and has joined the team as our new MDS Coordinator. Arthur has extensive clinical knowledge from working in long term care and is excited to transition his knowledge to the MDS world. We are

confident that Arthur will excel in the role and shine in his new position.

Best Wishes On Your New and Exciting Adventure We at Briar Place would like to thank Cynthia Misius for her hard work at Briar as she moves on to a new and exciting chapter in her life. Cindy retired from Briar in

June. Cindy has spent 12 years at Briar in the MDS Coordinator position all while focus-ing on providing quality care to our residents. Cindy will be enjoying her retirement with her family and grandson. Cindy will be great-ly missed and remembered by our staff and residents fondly. Don’t be surprised if we see Cindy around still though, Cindy is always willing to help and doesn’t want to stay away from the Briar Family.

After working at Grasmere Place for 26 years, both residents and staffs were sad to see Mary Goines retire. As we are always saying that Grasmere has a way of getting into your blood. When we’re in need of a nurse to fill-in, Mary comes in to help out, without a moment of hesitation. She works with all doctors and as always is an advocate for the residents. We are thankful for her stepping up and helping us out and hope to keep her here, for the foreseeable future. Thank You, Mary Goines

Rocking out for a Cure Fundraiser!Sebos Nursing and Rehab kicked off their “Rocking out for a Cure” fundraiser benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association, the Greater Indiana Chapter! Stephanie Arevalo, Development Specialist of the Alzheimer’s Association expressed her gratitude for Sebos and their continued support in the community. Our Rocking Chair winner happened to be one of our own memory care residents who has been a resident at Sebos the past 2 years!

Also in the photo is her Granddaughter who will be showcasing our chairs on her front porch where her and her grandma had spent many of days together. Sebos Nursing and Rehab looks forward to continued partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association as we will be preparing for the

upcoming 2017 Walk. Thank you to all of those who participated in our fundraiser in our efforts to find a CURE!
