Transportation can be expensive especially if you own your own car. Car payments, maintenance, insurance and gasoline can easily throw off your budget. If your car is getting older or needs a lot of work done, you may be considering what you next move is.
There are alternatives to car ownership that can still get you to where you need to go:
DART Bus Service Most rides cost $1.75, reduced to $.70 for those of 65 or with a disability OR roundtrip for $3.70. Medicare Card or DART First State Reduced Fare ID card is required for reduced fare pricing.
Paratransit for disabled persons unable to use our over 60 public fixed bus routes. All trips are $3.00 one way each county (Example Sussex to NCC $9.00). Application required.
SCAT The SCAT program provides a 50% discount on taxi fares for senior citizens (persons 65 years old and older) and persons with disabilities. Application required.
Rides from Friends or Family coordinate with friends or family for rides to and from your destination.
Rent a Car Car rental specials are often available. If you need a car for a few days a month, renting a car may be cheaper than buying one.
Car Share with a Friend or Family Member Consider co-owning a car with a friend or family member. This can be tricky because of coordinating responsibilities, but done well, this could be a cost-effective option.
Not every option will work for everybody and meeting your transportation needs may require a combination of the options above, or perhaps owning your own car is what is necessary for you, but considering your full options is always helpful.
If you would like to review the options above, discuss your transportation plan, apply for any of the above programs, or talk about how to make car buying affordable, a $tand By Me Financial Coach can help. Call Financial Coach Jenna at 302-651-3427 to schedule an appointment.
