Q U A L I T Y A N D

Hanhart – today the leading manufac-turer of stopwatches, market leaderfor mechanical stopwatches and spe-cialist in high-precision, functionalinstrument watches for use in the air,on the land and on the sea – has itsroots in the traditional craftsmanshipand art of watchmaking in Switzerlandand southern Germany.

The company was founded in 1882 inDiessenhofen in Switzerland by JohannA. Hanhart. In 1902, the watchmakingbusiness moved to the watchmakingcapital of southern Germany,Schwenningen/Neckar.

It was as early as 1924 that Hanhartlaunched the world’s first affordablemechanical stopwatch. At that time,these timepieces came exclusivelyfrom Switzerland and were only avail-able – if at all – at very high prices,since they were virtually only everproduced as one-off items. The greatsuccess of this stopwatch laid thefoundations for further innovative tech-nical developments, such as the com-plicated split-second stopwatch or anultrafast oscillator with a balancewheel frequency of 360,000 vibrationsper hour, which enabled Hanhart tobecome one of the first manufacturersof watches capable of measuringhundredths of a second.

As the company grew, a second factorywas established in the southern Ger-man town of Gütenbach in 1934.This is still where the entire stopwatchcollection is manufactured today, andsome of the wristwatches.

Then in 1938 a new era began – thefirst Hanhart chronograph model, themono-pusher “Calibre 40”, went intoproduction. This was followed in 1939by the legendary pilot’s chronographs“Calibre 41” and “TachyTele”.

After the Second World War and thedismantling of the production facilitiesby the occupying forces, the hard workof reconstruction began in 1949.By the early 1950s, production wasalready in full swing again.Hanhart began to concentrate increas-ingly on making mechanical stop-watches. In 1962, Hanhart amazed themarket with its low-priced stopwatch“Amigo” – precision mechanics in aplastic case.

With the start of the era of the quartzwatch, Hanhart set up its own plasticsinjection moulding plant and developeda quartz movement which would sub-sequently be sold by the millions.During these years, the range of mech-anical and electronic stopwatches,quartz watches and alarm clocks beingproduced expanded steadily.

With the renaissance of traditionalwatchmaking in the mid-1990s,Hanhart was able to draw on its ownpioneering achievements from thepast: from 1997 onwards, it began tomake faithful reproductions of thelegendary pilot’s chronographs in newand limited editions, using the oldtools and specifications.These replica chronographs have beenenormously popular with collectorsand enthusiasts.

Nowadays high-quality mechanicaltimepieces, painstakingly manufac-tured in numerous individual stages atthe factory in Gütenbach, continue torepresent an important product seg-ment for Hanhart alongside its widerange of stopwatches for industry andsport. Just as they were used in thepast for all important car races,amongst other things, now they arethe essential rallying companion forambitious vintage car drivers.

The design and technology of the wrist-watches in the Pioneer and Primuscollections are also based on Hanhart’svast expertise and long tradition ofmaking chronographs.They combine historic features such asthe red button – Hanhart’s trademarksince 1939 – with the latest technologyand contemporary design.

The lever escapement (2 jewels onthe lever) and the shock-resistantbalance wheel increase the accu-racy and lifespan of these mechan-ical precision stopwatches. We usethe Swiss lever escapement forstopwatches which will run for longperiods and/or for fast-beat move-ments.

“Lumen“

For use in industry and, especially,in laboratories, Hanhart offers twowatches in its precision mechanicsrange with luminous dials.

Once the special dial has been“charged” with light (takes approx.1 hr.), the face will glow in thedark for approx. 3-4 hours so it isclearly readable. This requires noadditional energy or radiatingmaterials. This useful property isachieved by using an innovativeplastic material containing light-storing pigments.

The practical ABS case of the“Lumen” has additional dust andwater protection.

In a special production process, theglass and the glass fixing ring aremoulded together and then firmlyscrewed to the case.

Of course, these watches are alsopopular with athletes, as theyalways have been.

Excellent readability thanks todouble-sized minute scale andsprung minutes hand.

Selection criteria

Hanhart has been one of the leadingproducers of electronic stopwatchessince 1976. Initially, the companymade them with LED displays (lightdiodes), but since 1982 it has beenusing LCD technology. This kind ofdisplay brings significant benefits interms of information content andenergy consumption, and so in-creases running times.Since 1989, Hanhart has been using“chip on-board” technology, due tothe smaller and more ergonomiccase designs combined with muchincreased functionality. It bringswith it significant improvements inquality.

Brief description of the functions

Start/stop: individual time measure-ment with no interruption.

Addition: time measurement withinterrupt option.

Split: split time measurement whiletiming continues.

Dual measurement: for measuringtwo times in quick succession.

Lap: circuit or section times. Aftereach stop, a new measuring processbegins automatically at time “0”.

Short lap: shortest lap time.

Countdown: count down for a freelyprogrammable period of time, at“0” a signal sounds.

Count-up: incremental counting/ stopwatch function.

Autorepeat: automatic repeating atthe end of the programmed time.

Pacer: acoustic pace-setter, freelyadjustable.

Memory: memories which can beretrieved separately after the timerecording has finished.

Reset: zero-setting.

Memory reset: deletes memory.

System reset: complete resetting ofthe stopwatch functions.

In order to keep the watches water-resistant over many years, theyshould be serviced by a specialistapprox. every 2 years.

The “Systema” clipboard is a well-designed, useful item to help withtime-recording. The top sectionalso has an interchangeable partfor fitting an electronic stopwatch(with a clip) or a mechanical one(with a holding bracket) (see pho-to), so that both right- and left-handed people can use the stop-watch in an ergonomically correctposition.

“Systema” has an integral pen-holder and a clamp for an A4 padof paper. The device is easy to holdusing the carry strap or handle.
