“The ability to take data - to be able to understand it, to process it, to extract value from it, to visualize it, to communicate it -
that’s going to be a hugely important skill in the next decades.”
HAL VARIAN, CHIEF ECONOMIST AT GOOGLE
FROM BIG DATA TO
INSIGHTS AND
PREDICTIONS Today’s decision makers have access to huge
quantities of data but making it actionable and
valuable by finding the insights and patterns is
difficult. The sheer volume of data can be hard to
manage and analyse. Fuelled by an ever-
increasing volume of big data, predictive analytics
and machine learning is being used to improve
everything around us from the way we shop to the
entertainment we enjoy, and the way we receive
health care. Public sector, telecom, sports,
healthcare, retail, and agriculture are just a few
industries where big data and predictive analytics
are changing the way we work and live.
The proliferation of smart devices, cloud
computing and SaaS applications, both in our
personal lives and the workplace, gives us the
ability to know more about people, markets,
customers, processes, behaviours and practices
than ever before. The exciting result is that we
have the ability to learn from past and present
events to predict future outcomes.

HANDS-ON PREDICTIVE
ANALYTICS AND MACHINE
LEARNING USING R
ASYSTEC BIG DATA ANALYTICS INSTITUTEAsystec, in collaboration with Persontyle and Eiura, are hosting a 3 day
bootcamp in DCU from the 18th – 20th of August 2014. This bootcamp
will be a fast paced, hands-on introduction to predictive modelling and
machine learning using R.
“R can do literally everything, and all new research is done in R. So especially for businesses that really want to out-compete their
competitors on the basis of advanced analytics, they can get access to everything they need within R, things that might not come for five or
10 years through commercial software,”
DAVID SMITH, REVOLUTION ANALYTICS
DATE: 18th-20th August 2014
VENUE: HG10, Nursing Building – Dublin City University
TIME: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM

ARE YOU TASKED WITH DATA ANALYTICS OR ARE YOU ABOUT TO BE? HAVE YOU
BEEN USING PROPRIETARY PREDITIVE ANALYTICS TOOLS AND WOULD LIKE TO
EXPLORE OPEN SOURCE?
HANDS-ON PREDICTIVE ANALYTICS AND
MACHINE LEARNING USING R
This bootcamp is meant to be a fast-paced, hands-on introduction to
predictive modelling and machine learning using R. Bootcamp will help you
develop basic understanding of machine learning methods and help you
use these methods to solve real-world problems. The bootcamp is targeted
towards both technical and non-technical people who want to understand
the machine learning models, methods and algorithms. Attendees will work
on real-world use cases and data sets for exercises in data analysis,
exploration, visualization, and machine learning. No prior knowledge of
machine learning or programming in R is assumed.
Attend this 3 day bootcamp to learn;
+ Basics of R platform, programming language concepts, common and
useful R commands, and applying basic statistical methods.
+ What predictive analytics and machine learning entails, the different
types of machine learning, especially supervised learning.
+ How to design and implement Classification and Regression methods
using R.
+ Use supervised machine learning algorithms in a variety of benchmark
datasets
+ Develop understanding of which algorithm to choose based on the
data you have
+ Most importantly you will gain experience in working with data using
machine learning, especially for classification applications and
cultivate your analytical skills.

to enable fortune 100 companies to make data
driven decisions across functions including
operations, technology management, and
marketing.
Josh is a seasoned engagement manager at
Sagence Consulting, and has interfaced with
senior clients responsible for executing $100k-
$35m initiatives.
Prior to joining Sagence, Josh worked within IBM's
Customer Innovation and Strategy group applying
advanced analytics to solve marketing problems.
Josh received his M.S from Northwestern
University, where he is now an Adjunt Lecturer for
Advanced Predictive Modelling courses, and his
B.S from Carnegie Mellon University.
DR. ZACHARIAS VOULGARIS
Dr. Z. Voulgaris is a senior data scientist,
researcher, data consultant, and author of several
technical books (including a hands-on guide for
aspiring data scientists). Dr. Zacharias was born in
Greece where he grew up. Scoring exceptionally
high in the university entrance exams, he enrolled to
the Technical University of Crete with a
scholarship. Upon completing a 5-year Engineering
degree there, he enrolled to the City University of
London for a Masters course in Information Systems
and Technology. Afterwards, he pursued a PhD in
Birkbeck College (University of London), under the
joint supervision of Prof. G. Magoulas and Prof. B.
Mirkin, in the field of Machine Learning.
Right after he finished, he was recruited by the
Georgia Institute of Technology as a research fellow.
He currently works at the Bing division of Microsoft
in the Greater Seattle area.

ABOUT ASYSTECAsystec are a technical integrator and distributor of information technology products and
solutions in Ireland working primarily in the areas of Data Analytics, Cloud Solutions,
Governance risk and compliance and infrastructure optimisation to name but a few.
Created in 2011, founders Les Byrne and Brendan McPhillips realised the need for a
focussed high value technical partner. We provide a complete solution from design,
programme management, hardware/software supply through to installation and
integration with full sales support. Once our customers data is secure, we show them how
to turn their data into actionable information using advanced analytical tools and
processes. We partner with a number of market leading vendors that enable us to do this.
As nationwide company we have offices in Cork, Dublin, Belfast and our head-quarters
are situated in Limerick.
In January 2014, we opened the doors of our new 5,000 sq. ft. Executive Briefing Centre
in Limerick. This allows us to offer our customers a high level management or deep dive
technical briefings from multiple vendors in a single location. Asystec have recently
acquired an addition to the Briefing Centre that will be transformed into a Centre of
Excellence in Data Analytics.
