Lakeside Presbyterian ChurchWorshipping through Music, Art, and Drama

The music ministries of Lakeside Presbyterian Church have a long and creative history. Since the church’s inception in the summer of 1941 by the Rev. Dr. Harry Clayton Rogers, preaching and enthusiastic hymn and Psalm singing were immediately a part of the worship service. With the church’s second pastor, the Rev. Dr. Clark Neale Edwards, the music ministry was formalized and the church enlisted the help of San Francisco State University’s choral director, Dr. Roy Freeburg, alongside voice teacher, Harold Hollingsworth. Every telling of the church’s history states that this congregation likes to sing. Today, the music ministry is a strong, vibrant program of the church which allows members and guests, alike, to sing, ring, and act praise to Almighty God.

The church has established numerous musical groups to support the outreach of the congregation. Children's and youth choirs, both singing and handbell ringing, the Chancel Choir (as it is now known), the Lakeside Handbell Choir, and the Lakeside Drama Troupe all make up a ministry poised to serve the Ingleside and Stonestown communities. Our ministry at Lakeside has seen annual services of Nine Lessons and Carols (Advent and Christmas); Christmas Pageants; Evensong services, Liturgical Dance; regional and national Handbell festivals, and tours to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Idaho, Nevada, and Festivals in Hawaii; special performances of Magnificat ( Vaughn Williams), Messiah (Handel), "Amahland the Night Visitor" (Menotti), Requiem (Fauré), Requiem (Rutter), Messe Solennelle (Vierne); world premieres of anthems composed for the church; and a handbell outreach project at Chinese Grace Church in Chinatown. It has presented the Broadway musical Godspell; and this year a review titled “Broadway: Then and Now”. The program has also hosted a competition for young composers, summer music camps for members and the community, and in 2016 it established the annual community Handbell Festival. In 2018, the Chancel Choir will make its Carnegie Hall debut.

Lakeside houses two pipe organs: the current sanctuary organ was built by Robert Pearson in 2003 and a small organ in the chapel built in 2001 by Francis Cummings; the original sanctuary organ was built in Germany in 1965. The sanctuary houses a 7’ Nordiska grand piano with many smaller instruments throughout the church supporting its mission and outreach efforts. The church also has five octaves of English handbells, cast at the Whitechapel Foundry in London, England; and a three octave set of Malmark tone chimes.

This biography is incomplete. In preparation for the church’s 75th anniversary, any information or history to add to this would be greatly appreciated.

The term ”handbell” refers to any bell that’s light enough to be lifted by hand for ringing. Handbells date back centuries before Christ. However, it was in 1700 that tuned sets of musical handbells made their first appearance in Europe. Handbellsgained popularity in the United States when Barnum and Bailey Circus imported a talented group from Ireland, dressed them in Swiss costumes, and put them in the arena as Swiss bell ringers. Only recently has the bell choir been recognized as a musical instrument. The use of bells in Christian worship began in the fourth century, when Emperor Constantine embraced the faith and declared Christianity as the religion of the state. The Bishop of Compania decreed that bells be used to announce the hours of worship. Bells were thought to have special powers for driving away evil spirits, protecting communities against disaster, and even healing and performing miracles. The superstitions are gone, but bells continue to charm and mystify people around the world; and they’re a lot of fun to play!

Lakeside Handbell Choir was formed in 1976 under the leadership of James “Jim” Groves. Since its founding, the handbell choirs of Lakeside Presbyterian Church have presented in worship services throughout the year, in addition to outreach opportunities. The group has performed throughout the Bay Area, as well as on concert tour at the Opera House in Sun Valley, Idaho, churches throughout Idaho and Nevada, and in Southern California, including the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena. They have also performed at San Francisco’s own St. Francis Hotel. After a very successful fundraising campaign, the ensemble was proud to purchase its five octave set of Whitechapel Handbells cast at the Foundry in London, England. They also perform on three octaves of Malmark handchimes. The group has consistently performed at regional and national handbell Festivals and clinics, including an iconic handbell trip to Hawaii and a cruise ship to the Mexican Riviera.

The Handbell Choir of St. John’s Presbyterian Church, Berkeley began in 1964. Originally it was conceived as a way to keep boys whose voices were changing involved with music. Les and Dorothy Dobbins, choir members at St. John's, donated the first set of bells. Under the direction of J. Richard Coulter, the program grew to six choirs at its height, involved nearly 100 ringers, children through seniors, and boasted five members who rang with the internationally known Sonos. Among the more prominent members of the program were Sanford Dole and William Harvey, respected and sought-after career musicians who still live and perform in the Bay Area. The most advanced group in the program was The St. John's Ringers, one of the best handbell choirs in the United States; they toured abroad and participated in major festivals throughout the country. In the past decade, the bell choir has been resurrected, including some of the members from it's noted past and some new players. Directed by Rev. Todd Jolly, it performs four or five times a year in worship and occasionally takes part in local bell festivals.

The San Francisco State University Handbell Choir was formed in 1997. The group performs approximately 10 times a year. They regularly perform at various SFSU campus events, and at senior residences in San Francisco, in Mill Valley, and on the Peninsula. The group also participates in the Redwood City's annual Hometown Holiday celebration, the Christmas Crèche Exhibit concert series in Palo Alto, and at the annual Days of Christmas concert series at Temple Hill in Oakland. The handbell choir rehearses at Temple United Methodist Church in San Francisco and plays for services and programs there several times a year. The group rings on 5 octaves of Schulmerich handbells and on 4 1/2 octaves of Malmark handchimes. The group's members are a mixture of SFSU faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends. The handbell choir frequently performs as a small ensemble of five -- playing what is known as 12-bell music. For these performances, they only use 12 handbells and play from music stands instead of in the traditional "off the table style".
