To my dear church family, I cannot thank you all enough for the amazing gift you all have given my family in celebration of my 10 years of ordained ministry at Second. Those of you at the Nine O’clock got to see my shock when Steve announced that you all had contributed to send us on a trip to Disney World. Some of you at the Ten O’clock service that day heard Lily, my six year old daughter, squeal and ask “when?!” She really hoped we’d leave the next day, but I insisted she had to start first grade anyway. We’re looking at our calendars and beginning the planning for such a great vacation. We’ve got to coordinate work and school schedules, as well as consulting the experts to avoid crowds and make the most out of our time away. This was a trip we were hoping to plan in about 2 years and thanks to your generosity we can go a lot sooner and enjoy it in a way we wouldn’t have on our own. I have been the recipient of your generous spirits for years and now this financial gift to me and my family is almost overwhelming. It is hard to know where to begin to thank you all for what you have meant to me in the past ten years. You all took a chance starting a new ministry with and for Young Adults and wanted to offer a new way to worship. We’ve grown a lot together as we’ve figured out how to faithfully live into that calling here. You all have walked beside me through my first experiences of ordained ministry, through marriage and home-buying, through my father’s illness and death, and through the birth of my two children. I have been privileged to walk beside you all through a capital campaign and building project, through births and deaths, through the launch of new programs and the end of those whose time was complete, and in the everyday life and work of the church. Thank you for letting me walk with you. I also want to thank those who worked to put together the lovely reception after worship on Sunday, August 18, Malinda Kirchner, Pam Luther, Jane Markham, Jeannie Ford Andrews and others. Though so much has happened in the last ten years it sometimes feels like just yesterday that I was making notes during my first phone interview with the Associate Pastor Nominating Committee in my little log cabin in Montreat. Thanks to Amy Glover Bryant, Vernon Markham, Hyatt McCarley, Carrie Johnson, Stephanie Johnson, Katherine Coleman Hodges, and Tharp Gillespie for their faithful work and trust back then. Thank you all for ten blessed years. I look forward to continuing to walk with you in faithful ministry here at Second Presbyterian Church! Peace, Camille

spiritual quest to find God.

Taught by our pastors and lay leaders, this class will explore what we believe as Presbyterians as well as the opportunities provided by the church to live out our faith through worship, study, fellowship, and service. The class will be held on three Sunday mornings during Sunday School from 9:50 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. in Room 68. The class begins on September 8 and includes the following schedule: • Sept. 8 Introduction to Second Presbyterian Church—Church

First and Third Monday Morning Bible Study Beginning in September

Study Book: The Church Transforming by Michael Jinkins Leader: Karen Akin

Michael Jinkins is President and Professor of Theology at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He is the author of several books, including Called to Be Human, Invitation to Psalms and Letters to New Pastors. In The Church Transforming, Jinkins probes the present state and future of the Reformed faith. Addressing increasing division over scriptural authority, ordination and marriage of gay and lesbian people, and other social issues, Jinkins looks at some of the hallmarks of the Reformed faith and discusses how these can be viewed anew. Topics covered include scriptural interpretation, the place of Christ, living in community, the life of the mind, unity versus schism, and spirituality and mystery. He concludes by showing how the Reformed faith is not a castle to be defended but a living treasure of great gifts. The book is available for purchase in the church office. The Bible Study group meets from 9:30 until 11:00 am in Second Hall. Our meeting dates will be September 16, October 7 and 21, November 4 and 18. All are welcome to come. Dr. Jinkins will be the speaker for the Lyon Lecture series hosted at our church this fall and will join our class for discussion on November 18.

November 17-18

Michael Jinkins, President and Professor of Theology at Louisville Presbyterian theological Seminary, will be our guest presenter for the 2013 Lyon Lecture Series. Mark your calendars and plan to be part of this event. Dr. Jinkins will lead us in an exploration of what it means to be “The Church Transforming.”

Second Presbyterian Family Retreat September 13-15 at Ferncliff Camp and Conference Center

Celebrating the rhythm of life’s calendar of events and connecting our stories to the story God has always been telling

Advent and Christmastide are seasons that are approached with both excitement and dread by adults and children alike. Many families are so overwhelmed by the strains that these seasons place on their time and their finances, that they have little margin left for celebrating at home. Most of us have wonderful intentions to do things differently this year, but when the time comes we find that we are once again under-prepared and overextended. This year, we want to come alongside and help with both of these challenges. At this retreat you and your family will be able to create your very own "Holiday in a Box" kit, complete with activities, crafts, and recipes that will help your family celebrate at home through highly personal (but non-stressful) modern traditions from Advent to Epiphany. Author Jerusalem Jackson Greer, will lead families through this creative process, and will share her experiences as a busy, working mother, trying to integrate expressions of faith into her family’s home life.

Cost and Housing

The cost of this retreat covers all your meals, lodging and the program. There are two options for participation. The program time will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday morning after breakfast and run through lunch on Sunday. You may also join us earlier on Friday night for dinner. After dinner we’ll have casual activities, bedtime stories, and s’mores around the campfire. Housing will be in hotel style rooms with a private bath. The cost for Saturday and Sunday will be $50 per adult, $25 per child age 3-12 and $10 per child under 3 with a maximum of $150 per family. If you would like to join the fun starting with dinner on Friday night the overall cost per family be an additional $50. Scholarships are available. Please contact Camille for more information.

Retreat Leader: Jerusalem Jackson Greer is a writer, crafter, nest-fluffer, speaker, farm-gal wannabe and author of A Homemade Year: The Blessings of Cooking, Crafting and Coming Together. She is a regular contributor for the At Home in Arkansas Blog, and both her home and her work has been featured in a variety of local and national publications. Jerusalem lives with her husband and two sons in a 1940s cottage in Central Arkansas with an ever-changing rotation of pets, including a hen house full of heritage chickens and a Hungarian Sheep Dog mutt. As a family, they are attempting to live a slower version of modern life. She blogs about all of this and more at jerusalemgreer.com

Faithful Green Friends Interfaith Power and Light, an organization which specializes in energy efficiency projects in churches, recently announced that our congregation will be receiving its Faithful Green Friends Award. More than a year ago, IP and L offered to partner with us to help improve the efficiency of the Vera Llyod Home for Children in Monticello, which we support in a wide variety of ways. Over the last year, we provided funds and volunteer labor to improve the Pettus House, which houses young girls at the Home. Church members as well as some of our youth worked with our IP and L partners to test the energy efficiency of the house, and we helped make a variety of updates which included adding weather-stripping, insulation, better air filters, low-flow shower heads, and energy efficient light bulbs. Members of our congregation made about 5 trips to Monticello, and while it was an investment of time and labor, Interfaith Power and Light estimates that Vera Lloyd will save over $8,000 in the next 20 years because of improvements we helped make. On Sept 12 at 5:00 p.m., we will be receiving one of four “Faithful Green Friends” awards, given by Interfaith Power and Light. The ceremony will take place at the Oyster Bar on 3013 West Markham Street, and the movie “Nourish” will also be shown. Everyone is invited to attend.

Unusual Ways to Repurpose Your Garbage Sure, there are certain things that you put aside to recycle or reuse. But let’s face it, there is a lot of useless garbage that seems to belong nowhere but the trash. And landfills aren’t getting any smaller! Here are some troublesome items that you might not realize can be recycled or reused, according to Jeff Yeager, author of Don’t Throw That Away, The Ultimate Cheapskate, and other books about living lighter on the planet.

Used Dryer Sheets You can't compost dryer sheets because of the chemicals they contain and some dryer sheets, like Bounce, can't be recycled. Check the container to confirm if the sheets are recyclable or not.

Lint Brush: You can roll up some used dryer sheets to fashion a lint brush. This is a useful tool for removing hair and lint from your clothes. Dust wipes: Whether it’s for your windshield or television screen, these dryer sheets make for great anti-static wipes on all types of surfaces.

Packing Peanuts Packing Peanuts are that random thing that you receive in mass and may feel guilty tossing in the trash. If you do not wish to receive packing peanuts at all, you can request an eco-friendly or biodegradable option. If not, here are some fun ideas for these packing peanuts.

Substitute Drainage: Instead of using heavy gravel to drain your potted plants, an inch or so of packing peanuts will do the job. This is an instance where the biodegradable type is preferable. Costumes: If you ever need a belly, you can use to packing peanuts to stuff your costume. This is a great way to reuse packing peanuts for holidays from April Fools to Halloween!

Pantyhose And you thought there was only one purpose for pantyhose? Here are another two! Food Storage: Store your vegetables and flower bulbs in your pantyhose and hang them. This improves air circulation and prevents rotting. Artsy Projects: Pantyhose have interesting and unique textures and patterns. Use the pantyhose as a stencil of sorts to recreate these shapes while painting.

We would appreciate your help…..In keeping the church office informed when there is a sickness in your family, when someone is in the hospital, or a death has occurred. Please also keep us updated on the sickness or concern so that the information we have on our Care and Concern line is accurate. Members and friends can call the Care and Concern Line, 227-6117, on weekdays to receive information about prayer concerns in our church family. We will honor all requests for confidentiality, but in order for us to offer pastoral care, we need to be aware of your situation. We also want to know about the joys, accomplishments and achievements of members of the church. Please call Nancy Coleman or Karen Akin in the church office with information, 227-0000, or email [email protected] or [email protected]. Thanks for your help! Heritage Committee Seeks 2nd Pres Memorabilia. Do you have old certificates, bulletins, newsletter, programs, or other documents from earlier days in the history of our church?
