More than 80 volunteer positions are being advertised on the BritishHandball.com website, and with a vast range of positions available there is sure to be something to interest everyone. “If people want to be involved with the London 2012 Olympics, they really should get involved now,” said British Handball CEO Paul Goodwin. “They need to gain experience in their chosen role, so that when the Olympic positions come available they are already tooled up to do the job.” With a series of international events already set to take place in Britain involving both the GB men’s and women’s teams British Handball is looking to put in place a skilled workforce which will help as they bid to host major international events in the future. Positions currently available include everything from Deputy Event Manager and Technical Officials to Team Hosts, Public Relations Officers, Official Event Photographers, Ticketing Officers and Stewards. The list of vacancies is growing daily, so please keep checking back to BritishHandball.com for information on new posts. Great Dane Secure Southern Title GREAT Dane secured the English League Southern title after they beat rivals Cambridge by one goal in a thrilling match which ended 25-26. Previously separated by just two points, second-placed Cambridge cannot now catch leaders Great Dane, whose victory will put them in a strong position when the end of season play-offs begin next month. Cambridge led 14-10 at half time and maintained their lead to 21-17, but they conceded eight goals without reply as Great Dane fought back ferociously to 21-25. A change of defence to 3-2-1 helped Cambridge claw back the score to 25-25, but a late Great Dane penalty was enough to clinch a vital win. Jordi Torres scored seven - including five from the penalty spot - for Great Dane, while Remi Bugariu added six, including four of those crucial eight goals in a row. For Cambridge, Francisco Seco scored seven and Zsolt Majoros added six, but it was not enough. Men’s Scottish League: Gracemount v EK82, Tryst v Liberton, Ayr v Cumbernauld. Manchester UniversityCelebrate Double Win

University Handball Championship Glory for Men’s and Women’s Teams

MANCHESTER Universitysecured a clean sweep of theUniversity HandballChampionships lastweekend, winning both themen’s and women’s eventsin thrilling style. Hosts of the event atSugden Sports Centre,Manchester’s homeadvantage proved telling inthe popular event, whichthis year attracted 22 teams

from universities across thecountry. In the men’s event theysecured a nail-biting victoryover Strathclyde. The sideswere level at 17-17 at the endof normal time, but thehosts clinched the win with a5-4 penalty win. And in the women’s eventManchester also overcameStrathclyde, but by a slightlymore comfortable margin of8-6.

MANCHESTER Men qualifiedsecond in their group afterwinning three of their four earlygames - the only defeat comingat the hands of Nottingham, 5-6,who went on to lose toStrathclyde in the semi final andalso to Leeds in the battle forthird place. Cranfield were despatched13-8 by Manchester in thequarter finals, while Strathclydebeat University College London13-9. Manchester beat Leeds 9-6 tobook their place in the final,with Strathclyde also reachingthe final after drawing withNottingham 5-5 in regular time,but winning 3-0 on penalties.

The final was a close affair,but Manchester levelled thescores with just three secondsto spare to send the match topenalties. The Glasgow side took anearly 3-1 lead in the shootout,but goalkeeper and businessstudent Glad Rotaru saved thenext two ,while the Manchesterpenalty takers duly levelled thescore at 3-3 and then 4-4. Rotaru pulled off anothersave, and when Piotr Malickislotted home the final shot thehome side could finallycelebrate. Lukasz Berezowski nettednine times for Manchester andChristoph Boettger scored fourto help their side to victory.

Manchester Beat StrathclydeMANCHESTER Women had alreadybeaten Strathclyde 8-6 and 6-5 inthe group stages, and went on tobeat Leeds Met twice as well to topthe group and line up a semi finalspot against Nottingham. They overwhelmed their rivals16-2 to make it to the final, whileStrathclyde had beaten Scottishrivals 10-8 in their semi final toensure they faced the hosts insearch of victory. The final proved to be a veryclose and exciting match. It wasinitially characterised by very

strong defences supported byoutstanding goalkeeping. At half time the score was tied at3-3, but in the second halfManchester started to use theirline player well, resulting in anumber of safely convertedpenalties edging the hosts aheadby two goals. This lead was then fiercelydefended until the final whistle toensure Manchester secured theUniversity title for the second timein their short history.
