What is handball?

Handball is an indoor team sport, which mixes high-speedaction, gymnastic agility, sleight of hand and tremendouspower with spectacular shots on goal.

It has been described as a sport combining all the bestelements of basketball, water polo and football with a littlebit of rugby thrown in.

So who can play handball?

Virtually anyone. You don't need to be a towering giant witharms the size of tree trunks to play (although that iscertainly an advantage).

The rules are virtually the same for the men's and women'sgame: only the size of the ball is different. And for children,

the ball is smaller again

Junior handball for schools

From around year 6, children will need to play with a larger balland on a full size court with full size goals

The full size court is 40M x 20M (presently very few full sizecourts in UK)

Full size goals are 3M x 2M

The number of players on court 6 plus a goalkeeper

The game at this age is single sex

The number of mens and womens clubs in Britain issteadily increasing

Clubs play in national league, British Cup and Europeanchallenge cup competitions

Junior leagues are being established in all regions Clubs are keen to work with schools to develop links and

provide pathways for players to participate and progress inthe sport

Both England and Scotland field national teams from U18age groups in European competition

Since May 2006 handball is a Lottery funded developmentsport and has embarked on a programme to make Britishhandball internationally competitive ahead of the London

compete in European club competition

arrival of beach handball
