The issue of drug abuse that engulfs Hammanskraal youth is a topic that is

voiced by concerned residents and businesses alike. It is common to find youth of different age groups and gender in what they call their “camp” (smoking area in the mornings and

evenings). Even if many organizations (Ngo’s / NPo’s) and government departments have tried in vain to fight this viral abuse, Pastor Joseph and his crew endeavored to use a different method of approach in the believe that a solution can be found. Pastor Peter Nejo, heading the St. Emmanuel church and the organization named Heroes with vision said that finding a solution needs everyone concerned to be hands on. He explained to Hammanskraal News that the abusers need to feel loved and cherished. He added that his organization intended to do just that and show them (abusers) that they are

too valued and loved to give up their lives to drugs. He mentioned that some of the Nyaope users are learned and their efforts and line of behavioral thinking can be redirected. The clergyman told Hammanskraal News that Heroes in Vision believes that the affected guys would be given chores that would be monitored. He explained that they intend molding them into responsible residents and South African citizens. He further mentioned that his organization would visit the ten individuals that would be prepared to break the chains of drug abuse to lead clean lives. Pastor Joseph added that those that are prepared to prosper would flourish, and be successful. He reiterated that in his belief, nothing is impossible. He voiced that the issue of the abusers to relapse (go back to drugs after rehabilitation) is because a drug was used to rid them of a drug.Pastor Joseph further said that nyaope abusers do not have to be rejected and stigmatized. He voiced that their intentions to become winners rather than losers will propel them forward. He reiterated that the abusers needed to engage their minds in something. He said that they would not give the substance dependents fish but teach them how to catch it. Joseph motivated the youngsters by saying that they had to be prepared to be servants to become masters. He explained that everyone has to start somewhere before they can be self-employed. Finally, the Priest told the attendants that he believed that they did not need a drug to quit drug abuse. He assured them that he had requested the police to keep their distance so that his organization could befriend them. He stated that it would be easier to understand

their problems so that they could solve them with ease. On the other hand, Heroes with Vision would convene meetings every fortnight to check on their progress and addressing problems.

Some of the drug dependents told Hammanskraal News that it is the most difficult thing to try and quit. The boys said that they experience stomach pain and cramps when they skip a fix. Abel Kgabi (pseudonym) said that they “work” to get money to purchase the drug. He also stated that they get new people (between 5 and 10) everyday who join them at the camp. He admitted that their life is not made easy by regular appearance of the men and women in blue. Their daily job, he explained includes carrying plastic bags and push grocery trollies for customers from the major stores to the cars and taxi rank. He said that the money collected is brought together to buy the fix.

Abel was quick to mention that they prefer softer food like biscuits. He further said that they stay hands on in selling cool time (icy soft drink in a sachet). He, together with his group agreed with the pastor that an idle mind is the devil’s workshop. Abel pointed out that most of them are jobless and hate loitering at home without doing a thing. He concluded by dismissing that they rob and steal from customers and those near them. He said that they believed that they could change their lifestyle for the better. “At that time I shall be taking nyaope as an abbreviation for” never yield adamantly over pressure of ecstasy”, concluded Abel.

Children are the most important people and gift from God. When the mother of a three weeks baby boy found out that she was pregnant she knew that her prayers have been answered by the Almighty God. Unfortunately those three weeks was the only time and joy this young man had with his mom. A three week old baby boy was found dead in the early hours of 28th August in Tambo village. The toddler who was found dead, left her mom in tears as she couldn’t believe what had happened to her precious boy.

28th August is the month where the lesabane family from Tambo village

cannot easily forget as these hurtful situation happened. It is alleged that the toddler was found dead by the mother who started crying before the younger sibling went to call the elders to come and assist in the situation that was when the family came across these sad situation. Although we couldn’t speak to the family or the mother of the dead baby boy, but according to our source the mother was in no good space lately.it was a sad moment for the family when the pathologist as taking away the tiny toddler to the government mortuary for the post mortem.

Constable Mmakgotso Mphenyeke of Hammanskraal SAPS confirmed that the baby boy of three weeks was found dead in

Tambo village. Although police had opened the inquest case as no one has been arrested in connection with the dead of the little tiny toddler. Mphenyeke said this matter is still under investigation as and no injuries did the deceased seem to occur as the motive for killing is still unknown.

Three years back in Hammanskraal woman of all kinds where not safe as this monster was going all around Hammanskraal raping WOMEN. Last week Thursday women from various parts of Hammanskraal gathered in Moretele magistrate court to hear a case of a man who turned to be a monster in Hammanskraal area. African national congress women’s league (ANCWL) in Temba where singing songs of struggle just outside the magistrate court where the culprit appeared.

Idah Mashamaite who is the chairperson of ANCWL in Temba said all we want as mothers and women is for this monster to rot in jail and not get even a bail. We would like to thank South African Police Service for a job well done on arresting this man as he was a thorn in our flesh.I think credit must be given when due we must not only complain when we see saps do wrong thing but even when they good we must applaud them”. Now what we want to see it’s for justice to take its course and sentence this man.We don’t want to see these walking around the street of hammanskraal again as if nothing

happened or he didn’t commit crime. These type of people are the ones who doesn’t even deserve bail or parole if found guilty. Because we feel we are not safe around them. Yes right now we are happy that he didn’t get bail what came to our surprise is that he even has guts of saying he is not guilty, which says he doesn’t even show remorse on cases he is been accused of. We are tired of living like animals we cannot afford run every time we see man.these thing of rape it has come as an hobby to many males and it must come

to an end we are tired of living in fear. Let law protect us from these devil doings please (sobbing with tears) we had enough if we not been killed we are raped.

The accused Alfred Mike Tau will appear before Moretele magistrate court on the 10th of September for the third time since was arrested. Although we pray and wish that he doesn’t even get bail again on the next date of trial.

September is Heritage Month. Not just a time for dressing up in cultural attire and cooking traditional food, or simply the month which incorporates Braai Day, it is also a wonderful opportunity both for nation-building and for growing tourism for the sake of jobs.

As South Africans, we are all very different – we come from nine different provinces, speak eleven

different languages and belong to a number of different races. This makes for exceptional vibrancy, but can also lead to misunderstandings, because two people with different backgrounds can see the same situation in very different ways.

Greeting strangers is a great example. Suburban types generally do not do it.

Even if you see the same person at the same time every day, it is not permissible to say anything unless an emergency has taken place. In ekasi, on the other hand, everybody greets everybody else. It is rude not to do so. Once, as a white person in Tambo's final resting-place, Wattville, I was parked outside a house waiting for a friend who had to give something to an aunt, when a local resident I had never met before walked up to my car window and shook my hand with a friendly smile and greeting. Why? Just because I was there.

Another time, I was in ekasi after dark and parked in the road when a fellow umlungu drove past. He did not greet me, shake my hand or even smile. “Yes, you are in the way,” he said in answer to my question, and “What are you doing here?”

He was not the only one who found my presence unusual. After dropping off a colleague one day in ekasi, I noticed that his eight-year-old son, who had come out of the house to greet him, had said something that made everyone laugh. Not understanding their mother-tongue, I asked for a translation and it turned out that the child, on seeing a white man walking down the street, had said, “Look, Daddy, another umlungu!”

As South Africans, let us embrace our rich collective heritages for a brighter future for us all.

The store opened in 1995 as Hammanskraal Spar. Through the years it has undergone several changes including a name change to the name we know and love today: KOPANONG SUPERSPAR.

Thomas Mminyuku has been working at the store for 19 years and he has seen

the community’s children growing up, from small young children that were shy and cautiously hiding behind their loving mother, these children have grown up and are now enjoying to confidently shop by themselves. Since the existence of the store, the store has shown appreciation to its customers for their

loyal support by making contributions to the community in the form of donations to schools for the early learners, orphanages, people with disabilities and old age homes. Kopanong Superspar is also part of a programme to help the youth get work experience to better their future and broaden their horizon. The store has run several competitions and there were many winners like Detrah who won R50,000.00. There was two other customers that participated in brand competitions and have won R10,000.00 each. The store has many competitions running throughout the year and winning is as easy as dropping your slip in a box.

Like the customers the store has also grown older in the 19 years and there were small changes happening occasionally to patch up broken tiles here and there or to paint the walls. There was a Tops liquor store opened to make shopping easier for the community, the customers can buy their food and just around the corner they can buy their drinks. This was not enough… This year the change will be BIG and it’s happening right now. The store is getting a complete “facelift”. There are new tiles and new fridges to name a few. The lighting is changing and even the checkout counters will be changed. They are transforming the store into a modern fresh

and brilliant store. The only thing that will not change is their friendly service and bright smiles. The store will be open and celebrating heritage day on the 24th September 2014 with beautiful dress and low prices. All customers should go and see this amazing change with their own eyes. They apologise for the inconvenience through this time of change, but promise a great shopping experience and thank you all for your loyal support. The grand re-launch of Kopanong Superspar will be held on the 25th September 2014. Kopanong Superspar is inviting you and your family to the store for the great celebration.

FMCG giant Unilever, through its Omo brand, embarked on a national roadshow for the eighth Omo Spar Schools Challenge. The programme line up included washing demonstrations on site, competition giveaways and skits demonstrating the importance of participating in the schools challenge. Jubilee Spar and Kopanong Spar in Hammanskraal, northern Gauteng were among 86 Spar stores across South Africa that were targeted with the competition. Winners of the schools challenge will be announced at a handover ceremony to take place in October 2014. The top 75 winning schools with the highest number of entries will receive mini science laboratories. Omo will also provide the winning school’s science teacher with a one-day training programme on how to operate the mini science laboratory and how to perform science experiments relevant to a particular grade. Schools with the highest number of entries will receive PE kits for each learner in their school.

According to Department of Health one of three women is a victim of domestic violence in our country. However the Department of Social Development in Gauteng is trying to combat domestic violence by introducing door to door campaigning in Majaneng village in Hammanskraal. Social Worker Tracy Shuping said that the programme is aimed at empowering women and community members in celebration of Women’s Month which is August.

The campaign was in partnership with various stakeholders such as Temba SAPS, Department

of Correctional Services, Department of Health, Kekanastad Traditional Mothers Development Organisation (Ketramodeo), Hammanskraal SANCA and Non-Governmental Organisations of Hammanskraal and Temba. The campaign started at Amandebele Ba Lebelo Traditional Authority at Majaneng at Ward 76 and commenced to different sections namely Mashimong, Dithabaneng, Lephengville and other areas of these ward.Shuping said that the main focus of the campaign is to focus on sharing information with community members about Victim Empowerment Programme (VEP) that is available at various government departments such as police stations, hospitals and social workers. According to Shuping most community members are not aware about how they have to deal with different forms of abuse including places where they can access help. The campaign included surveys which was conducted and it

will be used to access the knowledge the public they have about Gender Based Violence. “We will be assisted by the results so that as Social Developments of what can be done to help the community” said Shuping. Community were given bags which were filled with pamphlets which have different information which can assists them including whistles which they can use when they experience crimes in their area. Lt Sarah Matlhaku Lesabane of Temba SAPS who was part of the campaign sang the same tune with Shuping of most of the community members having no knowledge of not knowing where to seek help when they are victim of abuse or when they witness it in their areas. Such campaigns must be done again in order to empower our society because as the police we have VEP services at our police stations but members do not know that.

Hammanskraal News spoke to some community members about how they feel about the VEP campaign offered to them. Mary Letlape of Mashimong Section 1 said that she is very happy that the government provides them such service because many people are not aware how they can fight Gender Based Violence (GBV) and where to access help including places where they can be offered a safe haven. She further highlighted the reason that some victims are forced to remain in their respective homes with different abuses they are experiencing. “So such initiative is very important to us because we will be able to share the information with neighbours including other women we attend social clubs with”, emphasized Letlape.

Spring day is a day everyone want to go out and celebrate; a day without anything distracting them. 05 September was a day where (EHW) employee health awareness held a celebration of spring day and national disability day, with students of Fanang Diatla care centre.

Fanang Diatla, established in 1984, has been doing wonders for people living

with disability. Malebo Mashilo co-ordinator of the event said since she entered the (EHW) she has not heard anybody talking of Fanang Diatla, hence the visit. “We decided we must visit the centre to show love, and appreciation to them as they tend to think that they are isolated by their families and friend. What made this day important was that it was disability day and also a casual

day. When I saw these students my heart was full of blood, my eyes where full of tears. And I felt that we need to do something about this: somewhere we can show that they are loved and appreciated. I would also like to thank SAPS department for being part of us in these event’s enjoyed myself today with these kids as I was getting to know them and see what they capable of. I can confirm that this is the beginning of the new big thing as we could see how disabled people can care for themselves by sewing and singing.Colonel Maupa of CAPS SAPS also encouraged these students to become policemen as they are capable of becoming police officers. Saying in SAPS they have 2% of disabled people so they would like to encourage these students to become part of the police force. Mama Onnica Sebokedi the principal of Fanang Diatla couldn’t stop nor resist tears of joy when she saw how her

student’s reacted towards the visitors.” I am very humbled today to say these words in front of all of you because this is my second home and these students here are my kids, I am a mother of (76) students. I can’t stop thanking the co-ordinator of the event, social worker miss Malebo Mashilo, who saw a need to come and visit us today. It shows that we are not overlooked in our community.

I am so humbled and happy when I see the kids relaxed, happy enjoying themselves and playing around police officers. I could see how these kids are happy around polices officers .I mean they were dancing and singing happily in front of everyone, which is something we don’t normally get to see because they like teasing and fighting most of the time.”

Karate is considered to be one of the most violent sports by some individuals who promote violent behavior to some individuals; however those who love and adore the sport call it the ancient noble art of self- defense. One of them in Hammanskraal Karate Sensei Thabiso Moeketsi could not hold his breath after one of his students managed to go through the Karate World Cup which was held this month. Moeketsi shared his disappointment after one of his student Thabang Phaho (20) failed to participate in the I.K.O Matsushima 4TH World Division Kyokushinkai Karate Tournament which was on 6 and 7 this month.

This is the first time for the tournament to be held in the continent of Africa

which South Africa won the bid to host the tournament. Moeketsi said that the reason for the disappointment is because there were no fighters from other countries less than 70KG Division which Thabang was expected to fight. The only participants under the same weight were his countrymen and he could not compete against team mates. Moeketsi elaborated that countrymen are teammates so they cannot compete against each other as they represent the same country.

He further expressed his satisfaction and jubilance of Thabang and other two students from his dojo who accompanied them to the world cup. “The students were exposed to the international standard of karate which is a motivation to them and others to follow” said Moeketsi. He told Hammanskraal News that the students who attended the event will also motivate fellow members of the dojo as well as those who reside in their different vicinities. Sensei Moeketsi of Hammanskraal (IKO) Kyokushinkai Karate told Hammanskraal News that they are affiliated with International Karate Organization IKO Kyokushinkai of South Africa which is affiliate of Japan.

Moeketsi is graded Third Black Dan belt Sensei said that he is very proud of one of his student Thabang Phaho who did exceptionally well.

Moeketsi told Hammanskraal News that his aim and objectives is to see more of his student representing our national squad of karate, developing mental and physical strength lastly is teaching self-defense. “I want to have more students like Thabang who will fight for our country and also establishing more dojos (A place where karate is trained) in Hammanskraal” said Sensei Moeketsi. He said that one of his dreams is to see myself developing karate in the entire Hammanskraal. Thabang Phaho told Hammanskraal News that he is bit disappointed as he have learnt a lot by watching some of the international fighters which I will use some of those skills in the future. I feel privileged as it is the first time to be exposed to the international tournament echoed Phaho. He said that one of his highlights of the tournament was seeing our country’s president Jacob Zuma and International Karate Organization President Yokashu Matsushima.

Phaho said that he intend working hard establishing his own Dojo where community have never heard of IKO Kyokushinkai is never been introduced so that they could be familiar with these karate style. He further encouraged youth to participate in karate as it’s a sport which does not only focus on fighting but also selfdiscipline. “IKO Kyokushinkai does not focus only on physical strength but also mental fitness and discipline” explained Phaho. He states that his family was against him playing these sports but things have since changed as they are very supportive though finance is a challenge. He explains that if their Dojo would have training equipment more students would qualify for the national team but because of that reason that is not possible.
