1 System descriptionHalton Safe fire damper control unit can control up to 200

fire dampers and smoke detectors.

Safe control unit is extended with link units where fire

dampers and smoke detectors can be connected.

1-4 fire dampers and smoke detectors can be connected to

one link unit that has its own logic program.

Fire dampers and smoke detectors can be grouped to up

to 15 different groups, which allow to close only the group

where fire is detected.

Every fire damper and link unit can also be set to operate as a

separate group.

Fire dampers can be tested automatically by user defined

week schedule. System will write a test report based on

performed test, showing the operation of each fire damper.

System can be set up, operated and viewed using 5.7”

graphic display. Optionally a laptop computer can be

connected to perform the same operations using a browser

interface.

Each Safe control link unit has independent program logic.

Control and link units communicate with each other by

Modbus RTU protocol.

Control unit can be equipped with a backup battery for alarm

transmission in case of a power outage.

3 Main menuThe main menu opens automatically when the Halton

SAFE screen is touched. The main menu page provides a

basic menu that allows viewing the system in more detail.

This page also lists the current state of the general alarms

and fan controls.

Navigation on sub menus:

To return to the main menu, press the Main Menu key at the top.

The Dampers states and Dampers test pages also have page navigation buttons.

With link buttons section you can access to system sub menus.

The main menu provides access to the fire damper and

smoke detector states and test pages via the dampers

states and control and test dampers icons.

Access to the settings page requires higher level privileges

than the basic user ID.

3.1 Main menu - Change LanguageA pop-up menu appears for available languages.

Select desired language from list and press change

button.

No user ID is needed for viewing and monitoring the

Halton SAFE central unit. The user IDs for deployment

and maintenance personnel are listed in the deployment

protocol.

For login press the ”key hole button”.

Current user information indicates current user name.

Users are:

Viewing - for viewing and monitoring dampers and smoke

detectors.

Service - for viewing, monitoring and alarm handling of

dampers and smoke detectors.

Maintenance - for viewing, monitoring, alarm handling and

minor settings of dampers and smoke detectors.

Installer - for all settings. Group handling and installation

features. See more about accounts from user accounts.

3.3 Main menu - System Status

System status shows overall information about the system.

Information in status:

System Status - Alarm

Contains information about system fire alarm.

States: = normal, = Acknowledge alarm, indicator blinks when alarm is unacknowledged.

System Status- Test

Contains information about test state.

States: = Currently not testing, = Currently one or more Zones are testing.

Link Units - Faults

Contains information about units Faults if there are one or more units on fault state.

States: = normal, = Acknowledge Alarm, indicator blinks when alarm is unacknowledged.

Dampers - Alarm

Contains information about Dampers Alarm State

States: = normal, = Acknowledge Alarm, indicator blinks when alarm is unacknowledged.

Dampers - Control

Contains information about Dampers Control.

States:

= All Control Closed, = All Control Opened, = Opened and Closed Control, = No active Dampers.

Dampers - State

Contains information about Dampers State.

States:

= All Dampers Closed, = All Dampers On middle, = All Dampers Opened, = Opened and Closed Dampers,

3.4 Main menu - FooterFooter contains most basic information about Safe controller.

On Left - Manufacturer and product name.

On Middle - Controller main version, sub version and current user.

On Right - System date and time.

By pressing reset all button system will confirm your

request.

3.6 Main Menu - Reset All Alarms!If there are one or more alarms in system you can

acknowledge all from controller’s front page.

NOTE!! Sufficient user privileges required to reset all

alarms.

NOTE!! Always make sure that there’s no fire or smoke

in the building (the alarm was caused by a fault or device

malfunction.)

Never reset alarms if the cause of alarms is unknown.

By pressing Yes-button system will acknowledge all alarms

in controller.

If there are still active alarms the system will notify about

the alarms on screen.

OR

If everything seems to be fine the system will start its Restore Sequence. NOTE!! The restore sequence will

take some time.

Settings are divided to 6 different sections.

1. Unit Settings, Assign units in to use.

2. Dampers Settings, Assign units’ dampers into use and select zones.

3. Smoke Detectors Settings, Assign units’ smoke detectors into use and select zones.

4. Fan Control Relay Settings, Assign how fan relays are affect by zone alarm and zone testing

5. External Fire Alarm Settings, Assign which zones common fire alarm affects when triggered.

6. External Zone Connections, Assign external alarm pins.

Restarting system:On Settings Main Screen is also

= This will Restart whole system. NOTICE!!, system will store all information in one hour loop.

Restart system will always store all information when its initiated. Settled information may be lost on that time window if

system lose its voltage support or other malfunction.

4 Settings and Installing

If there are still active alarms the system will notify about

the alarms on screen.

OR

If everything seems to be fine the system will start its Restore Sequence. NOTE!! The restore sequence will

take some time.

Safe controller’s operating voltage is 230 VAC. Controller

will be delivered with grounded socket connection

cord which also works as controller disconnect device.

NOTE!! Remove or further connect Extension cord only if

disconnect switch is nearby.

Safe controller consists from I/O and CPU unit (or as

screen unit), which are installed to control center cabinet.

CPU unit contains 5.7” touch screen display, which is

installed to cabinet’s front plate.

4.1 Controller

CPU-unit can be installed on top of or right next to the I/O-

unit. It can also be installed to a distance from I/O-cabinet

to different room space.

The white cover is installed with four screws after installing

cables to I/O unit. If CPU cabinet is installed on top of I/O

cabinet, CPU cabinet’s install plate needs to be installed

with I/O cabinet’s cover with these screws also.

Installation and featuresMany inputs and outputs can be set in to SAFE controller.

Controller’s relay outputs provide system state that can

be used to transfer alarms, for example into building

automation system.

Also fans’ control permits can be routed through controller,

which allows ventilation system to stop when system is

on alarm or test state. Relays connection information is

described below.

Each fan control relay can be set to switch off when user defined fire zone is alerting or system is testing fire zones

dampers.

4.1.1 Fans

External fire alarm input can be set to affect defined fire zone.

When fire alarm is triggered, the system will cause same kind of function as zone alarm triggers to defined zones.

Connector pins can also be set to normally open or normally closed (default value is normally closed).

Up to 50 link units can be connected into system. Every unit must be activated after it has been connected into SAFE Controller. Each link unit has its own individual parameters.

Parameters:

4.2 Link Unit

- Type: Select unit type, see below selecting types.- Alarm: Unit fault.- Alarm type: Unit fault message: 1. Unit is not in use 2. Communicating, everything is fine with this unit and it is communicating with controller. 3. Bus fault, controller can’t connect with this unit. Usually wrong unit address or cabling issue. 4. Version mismatch, link unit version needs to match the controller.- Version: Current version of the unit.- Port: Modbus communication port number, default is 3.- Address: Modbus address of the unit, default address is unit number + 10, See more on unit installation.

Up to 50 link units can be connected to the system.

Operating Voltage:System contains a power unit for link units. The power unit is a 260VA toroidal transformer, which transforms the line voltage into 24 AC voltage. Link unit uses 24VAC power, connected to Units connectors P1 and G0. Power supply can be chained to other units from same connectors.One transformer can be connected to up to 6 units depending dampers what are connected to link units.

4.2.1 Link Unit Installation

Recommended cable is MMJ 3x2.5 S between power supply and link units.

With 260VA you may connect maximum of 6 units per support line depending on the length and diameter of the support cable.

Data Bus:Units communicate with controller via Modbus RTU Bus. Modbus RTU need to be connected with bus topology.Data bus has to be chained from unit to unit.

Data Bus address selection:Each link unit is identified by bus address. Each link unit must have an individual bus address for controller to find all units.Unit address is defined by DIP switch on Units circuit board.See unit address table how DIP switches are set.

For example:

If DIPs number 2, 3 and 5 are switched ON, unit address is 16 + 8 + 2 = 26. The units is

therefore number 16.

Refer to units address table how each unit DIP switch is set.

Cable has to be shielded type twisted pair cable. e.g. cable is 2x2x0.5mm shielded twisted pair see example connection setup from unit wiring.

DIP switch is a binary selector; the address is the sum of values of the switches in ON position.Address must be between 11 and 60. Address 11 is Unit 1 and address 60 is Unit 50.

Address can be marked to link unit cover.

Up to 4 dampers can be connected to each link unit.

Each damper has individual parameters.

4.3 Dampers

Unit Parameters:- Unit Number and Type: Unit number and type can be changed.

Damper Parameters:- Location: Current location of dampers. Location text can contain any information about damper position or state. Location text will be shown on Alarms clear text and graphic displays.- Zone: Current zone of dampers. Refer to section understanding zones of this manual. When a damper sends an alarm it triggers alarm state to selected zone.

Changing Location:The location text can be changed as follows:

1. Click Location text.

2. select programming from pop-up menu.

3. A programming menu will appear for the text field to be selected. ( NOTICE: Also other parameters are visible but may not be changed.)

3. Modify desired text on the text field:

3. Press Change button from left side of the window to save changed text. (NOTE: Changes will not be saved unless you press Change button). If you don’t want to modify text go to next step.

4. Press Picture Open button, this will take you back.

Changing Zone And Type

1. Click Zone or Type value field.

2. Zone or type can be selected

3. Select desired value from list and press Change for saving selected state or press Cancel.

Up to 4 smoke detectors can be added to each link unit.

Each smoke detector has its own individual parameters, depending on Safe controller version.

4.4 Smoke Detectors

Each device must be added to one of the fire zones. Device can affect multiple fire zones or multiple fire zones can affect to device control.Fire zone connections are presented on each device setting page.

With these zones system can be built with many different variations of fire zones

Zones

With zones you can group one or more devices into

department section or into fire zone. When one of the

devices sends an alarm inside of a zone, whole zone will

be triggered to alarm state.

Zones can be closed by external alarm, which can be

connected to controller.

All devices can be split into multiple groups. Zone

grouping is assigned into end device, like fire damper and

smoke detector.

Information:

For units you can see only unit numbers on state and

control page.

Control:

Unit fault alarm button will appear on page when unit is in

fault state.

Unit fault will trigger when there are one or more

problems within units handling, see more in unit settings.

Press unit fault button to acknowledge fault alarm. Button

will stop flashing when alarm is acknowledged.

On unit fault state dampers will set to error state and

smoke detectors alarm is set to normal state. See more

about dampers or smoke detectors.

5.2 Dampers Information and Control

Information:

- Position: Displays damper location in unit. This is physical connection between unit and damper. See more

from damper settings.

- Location: Displays assigned text from damper alarm.

- Control: Displays the status of current control. Status can be:

- Close: Damper is controlled to close

- Open: Damper is controlled to open

- Not In Use: Damper is not in use

- ERROR: There is an ERROR state, like unit fault.

- State: Displays the status of the damper limit switches. Status can be:

- Closed: Damper is closed

- OnMidd (On Middle): Damper is between limit switches.

- Opened: Damper is opened.

- Fault: Both limit switches are active. This will be identified as error state and alarm will be triggered.

- Alarm: Displays the status of the damper alarm. Status can be:

- Normal: Damper is functioning normally

- Alarm: Damper hasn’t reached the end or open switch in period of alarm time, when control state

is changed or damper has been closed by malfunction or fire fuse has been burnt.

Damper has 160 seconds time to open and 30 seconds time to close. Alarm box

text will blink if alarm is triggered.

Damper will not be opened until damper alarm is acknowledged.

Controlling manually by hand:Each damper can be opened or closed manually. Damper cannot be controlled by hand if damper is on alarm

state, not in use or on fault state.

NOTE!! If damper is left to hand value, damper test program will ignore this damper.

For security reasons hand value for damper is always disabled, if current damper or zone is on alarm state.

For changing control value by hand

Press dampers control box.

It will open a window where either open or close can be selected.

Select value from list and press change for hand value or cancel.

Hand status will be indicated with blue borders around the control box.

For changing control value from hand value back

to Auto value.

Press damper control box.

A window will be opened where either open or close can

be selected. Press auto button.

Blue borders will disappear around control box to indicate

auto status when damper is returned to auto value.

For Acknowledging Damper alarm:

Press damper Alarm box

It will open a window with multiple selections for alarm

box. Selections are:

- Alarm acknowledge: For clearing damper alarm

- OTHERS ARE NOT REQUIRED.

Alarm box text stops blinking and alarm is acknowledged

when alarm acknowledge is pressed. Damper will try to

open again after alarm is acknowledged.

If problem on damper is not solved then alarm will be

triggered again.

Information:

- Position: Displays smoke detector location in unit.

This is physical connection between unit and smoke

detector. See more from smoke detectors settings.

- Alarm: Displays the status of the smoke detector

alarm. Status can be:

- Normal: Smoke detector is functioning

normally

- Service: Smoke detector has triggered service

state

- Alarm: Smoke detector has triggered alarm

state

- Shortcut: Line between smoke detector and

unit is on shortcut

- Broken line: Line between smoke detector and

unit is not connected properly or 2.2kOhm end

resistor is not installed into smoke

detector.

- Reseting: Unit is resetting smoke

detectors. Reset function cuts current from

smoke detectors for 10 seconds.

NOTE!! Reset function will reset all smoke detectors

on this unit.

Controlling:After alarm is triggered on one of units smoke detectors,

reset SD button will appear. Pressing the button all units’

smoke detectors can be reset.

If alarm reappears, smoke detector is still dirty from

particles or dirt and it needs to be cleaned first.

6 Test DampersFrom this page you can test dampers programmatically.

Test can be initiated by pressing test all now button, by

timetable or pressing zone test buttons.

Test program:

Test program is split into same zones as dampers and

smoke detectors are assigned. When zone test program

is initiated, programs steps are:

1. Programs wait cancellation for 5 seconds if test is

initiated by accident

2. Program will initiate test to each damper

assigned to the zone currently being tested. If the zone

doesn’t have any dampers assigned then the test will

not be initiated.

3. Zone test is stopped after all dampers of the

zone have finished the test program.

4. The system writes test report to hard drive after

zone test is stopped.

NOTE: You may stop a started test program any time by

pressing zone test button when the button is green.

One damper test protocol:

Test protocol will run for all initiated dampers.

NOTE!! Test protocol will not test dampers that are in

hand state.

Sequence is:

1. Close damper manually with hand state.

2. Check that damper will reach the end state.

3. Open damper manually with hand state.

4. Check that damper will reach the open state!

5. Remove hand value.

6. Successful - damper has completed the test protocol.

Test Timetable:

Test can be assigned to start according to time schedule.

The test schedule can be viewed and changed by pressing

the clock symbol.

Test report:

Test reports are divided by zones. If zone test is run,

reports can be found under view test reports buttons.

Fan Control:

Fan controls are turned off on test program, if fan is

assigned stop by currently running zone test.

Test pages:

Each damper can be set to run its test program or stop

current test.

6.1 Test Timetable

With timetable you may schedule your test(s) to start at

specific time. Timetable is one week timetable with 6

events on each day.

On the left are days and on the table are those six events

for each day.

To save edited events press change button. Cancel button

will ignore all changes. You can copy one day events to

another by copy events button.

- Time can be changed by the keypad. To clear the event

press C- button below the keypad.

- Select zone to be tested. Selection “All” will test all the

zones at the same time.

Event will be confirmed by pressing change button over

editing section. Cancel button will cancel editing.

Changing timetable:

Change events by pressing the slot from table. The event

table will be sorted automatically after events have been

added, removed or modified.

Event editing window opens when a slot is selected.

Copy Events:

Select the time schedule source from the left side and

destination from the right side.

Save changes by pressing copy button. Cancel button will

cancel editing.

Dampers control, state and test status can be viewed

from the test pages. Dampers can also be tested

individually.

Note that testing damper individually will not write

anything to test reports.

Test status

Contains test information.

States:

Waiting - Damper is waiting indication to test,

Testing! - Running testing protocol

Test OK! - Test is passed

Fault - Damper failed the test and is set to alert state

Canceled - Test has been canceled for this damper

Not in use! - Damper is not in use.

Test now button

Indicates damper being tested when the button is green.

- Press button to start test for this damper. Testing can be

cancelled by pressing the button again.

6.3 Test Reports

Test reports from one zone can be viewed. Go to test

dampers main page to select zone. Three reports per day

are stored on disk. New report will always appear after

zone test has been ended.

Finding report:

Test reports can be searched using the year, month and

day selectors.

For example select day for desired report.

Number defines the order for the days reports; 0 is latest

and 2 is earliest.

After day and number selection press show report button

to view report.

Dampers are separated with ‘**********’ line.

First Line is displaying Damper point id and state of

damper test. States can be:

- Waiting: For some reason after test damper is still on

waiting state of test. It might be considered as fault state.

- TESTING: For some reason after test damper is still on

waiting state of test. It might be considered as fault state.

- Test Succeeded: Test sequence for damper has been

succeeded.

- Fault: Damper can’t be tested. Notation about Fault will

be written to Notice line.

- CANCELED: Damper test sequence has been canceled

by User.

- Not In Use: Damper is not in use.

Second line contains information about dampers close

and open times.

- Opentime: last open time, how much time damper

took from close position to open position. (Time can be

other than on test sequences)

- Closetime, last close time, how much time damper

took from open position to close position. (Time can be

other than on test sequences)

- Open timestamp: last time when damper reached

open position. Format is hhmmss, hours,

minutes, seconds. (Time can be other than on test

sequences)

- Close timestamp: last time when damper reached

to close position. Format is hhmmss, hours, minutes,

seconds. (Time can be other than on test sequences)

Third line includes additional information about the test,

usually in case of a fault state. Additional information can

be:

- NOTICE: Damper is still waiting for testing!

- NOTICE: Damper is still testing its self!

- NOTICE: Fault! Damper is on Alarm state!

- NOTICE: Fault! Damper is on Hand value!

- NOTICE: Fault! Damper is on UKNOWN STATUS!

Report:Report will show start and end time and all dampers that are connected to selected zone report.

This shows alarms, unacknowledged alarms, active

alarms and alarm log.

After resetting all alarms there might be a check for any

active alarms. Active alarm means that one of the alarms

hasn’t been able to recover from the alarm state, for

example there is still damper mismatch between control

and state or fire alarm is still on.

Alarms lists inspection:

Alarm lists are not sorted by units or dampers. They are

sorted by their point id. Point id is system’s identification

for alarms.

Reading point identification:

Point id is sectioned to two or three parts. Last sections

indicate the alarm type. Sections are separated with

underline ( _ ). By combining these sections you can find a

specific alarm.

First part - location identifier: indicates where

physical/programmatic alarm is located.

Locations are:

- EXTERNAL: external physical alarm to controller, see

more info on external alarms and fire alarm.

- UNIT01-50: programmatic alarm for units.

Second part - device identifier: indicates which device

is alarming.

- FD01-04: Damper alarms on unit. The number indicates

damper position in unit.

- SD01-04: Smoke detector alarms on unit. The number

indicates smoke detector position in unit

- UNIT: This is unit alarm on controller

Third part (Type Part) - type identifier of what specifies

the alarm.

- FAULT: This is unit’s fault alarm.

- ALARM: This is a damper conflict alarm or smoke

detector alarm.

- ALARM1-15: This is an external alarm. Number indicates

zone number.

- FIREALARM: This is controller’s fire alarm.

All alarms:

Shows list of all available alarms.

Unacknowledged alarms:

Shows list of alarms that haven’t been acknowledged.

Alarms can be in not active state.

Unacknowledged alarms:

Shows list of alarms that are acknowledged but they are

still active.

Alarms logs inspection:

To access the alarm log select alarm selection from the

drop down menu.

This shows date, time and state when one of the alarms

has occurred. See more in Alarm Log section.

7.1 Alarm Log

When alarm state changes it is stored in this log. Alarms

appear in chronological order and latest log entry is on top

of the list.

Sorting

You can sort the list by time, user or point name (Point id).

There’s also a selection to view or hide Point text (damper

or smoke detector location).

Data list

Each row represents one log entry.

One row indicates the time when entry has been made,

user name who changed it (if blank it is a system entry),

event where alarm state has been set, point name for

identification, general information about from where to

where point state has been set.
