The William F. Silver House is one of the more architecturally sophisticated of the Silver houses in the Deer Creek-Glenville area. Its compact verticality and emphatic cornice line suggest the influence of the Italianate style, although it remains a largely vernacular house on the order of the Benjamin and Jeremiah Silver houses (HA-398; HA-384). As one of the group of Silver houses, it occupies a visually prominent location between the site of the large John A. Silver House (HA-385) and the Benjamin Silver house.

DESCRIBE THE PRESENT AND ORIGINAL (IF KNOWN) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE

The William F. Silver House is a 2~ story stone house with Italianate detail dating from 1857-58, with associated outbuildings, located on the east side of Darlington Road (Md. Rt. 161) about 1/4 mile north of the intersection of Harmony Church Road. The main section of the house faces west.

The house consists of two stone sections, the smaller and perhaps older being a two story wing north of the main section. The main section is generally square in plan and has a hipped slate roof with wide over­hanging eaves and a bracketed cornice. The original main entrance to this section is in the three-bay south elevation. The doorway is in the west bay and has a transom and sidelights with a decorative <lentil molding at the top of the door frame. The current main entrance is in the west elevation which has a one-story shed roofed porch. A bay window is located just to the left of the porch. The sills and lintels in the main section are finished granite masonry, while the walls are coursed rough cut stone. Two interior brick chimneys rise from the roof.

The two-story stone wing has a slate gable roof with the ridge on a north-south axis. The stone in this section is more varied in color and the lintels and sills are rough cut. An open concrete terrace adjoins the east side of the wing.

A one-story stone cottage, possibly former slave quarters, is located about 75 feet northeast of the main house. The cottage has a single door and window on the south elevation. The gable roof is slate. An interior chimney rises from the west gable end.

A large frame bank barn on a stone foundation is located about 50 yards north of the main house. Exposed stone foundations suggest the barn was once much larger than the existing structure. The present barn has board and batten and vertical siding and a slate roof. About fifty feet west of the barn are two frame wagon sheds, one now used as a garage. The sheds have vertical siding and stone foundations with slate roofs.

A frame tenant house is located about 40 feet north of the northernmost wagon shed. The house is one story on a concrete block foundation with a central brick chimney and a composition roof. A shed entry porch on the south or main elevation covers the two-bay facade. A shed rear addition has german or novelty siding.

The William F. Silver House is one of the more architecturally sophisticated of the Silver houses in the Deer Creek-Glenville area. As one of the group of Silver houses, it occupies a visually prominent location between the site of the large John A. Silver House (HA-385) and the Benjamin Silver house.

HISTORY AND SUPPORT

~he exact date of construction of the William F. Silver House is .clear; however, Gershom Silver is said to have built a stone house

on this property about 1811 (B.S. Silver, bur Silver Heritage, p. 3001). It is possible that parts of that house may exist in the present structure, particularly in the north wing. The southern section was built by William F. Silver beginning in June 1857 (B.S. Silver, Our Silver Heritage, p. 3602).

NOTE: This form consolidates two original survey numbers under HA-389. These are HA-390 (Servants Quarters) and HA-391 (Barn).
