Parables (Mt 13 continuation) Homily Summary Father Andrew Wojtan July 26, 2020

The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field… We can easily see an unex-pected element in this Parable. This guy found the treasure in a field, covered it up and then in joy he goes and sells all that he has to buy that field. The basic message lies in the twist. You cannot unjustly acquire the Kingdom. You have to give up everything in order to obtain it. Even though it is hidden, it is precious, it makes us spiritually rich with the rewards of everlasting life. Jesus takes that common theme of lost treasure, and He uses it to show us that the Kingdom is valuable, it’s worth ‘losing’ everything.

St. Irenaeus of Lyons lived in the 2nd century A.D. He says that the treasure that Jesus is talking about is not just the Kingdom, but it is Christ Himself. “The treasure hid in the Scriptures is Christ, since He was pointed out by means of Types and Parables.” Christ comes into the world as fully Divine and fully human. The treasure of His Divinity is hidden under the veil of His hu-manity. Christ as the treasure is hidden in the field of the OT, and hidden in the world in the Incarnation. We can find the revelation about Christ in any part of the Scripture. The idea of this Parable is that some people find the treasure accidently.

A merchant searching for fine Pearls. He finds this one pearl of great value, goes and sells all that he has and buys that pearl. The twist is in the way the man responds. The man overreacts to the discovery of the great Pearl. He gives away everything for the sake of this one thing. He is doing what Jesus is calling His disciples to do. Jesus is calling us to be foolish in the eyes of the world. He is calling us to live a radical life of discipleship. That one thing, where nothing else matters, except the Pearl of great price, is the Kingdom of God. It’s the eternal life.

The kingdom of heaven is like a net thrown into the sea… The men take the net out, they begin to separate the good fish, put them in baskets, and then throw away the bad. Jesus says this is an allegory, a symbol for the Final Judgment. At the end of the age, the Angels, who are like fishermen, are going to separate the evil from the righteous. They will throw the evil into the furnace of fire, which would be Hell, an eternal separation from God. In that furnace of fire men will weep and gnash their teeth. That is one of Jesus’ standard images for describing Hell. It is an expression of total frustration and torture. Some people discover God too late, and suddenly realize what they have missed.

When you hear something irritating, challenging—you go after it! Search for the true treasure!
