BAPTISM OF JESUS HOMILY SUMMARY FR ANDREW WOJTAN JANUARY 12, 2020
Jesus came to John for baptism, like many others. But JB reacted differently to Jesus. Mt tells that the greatest saint of Israel needed to be baptized by Jesus. So all the people need to come to Him as well, because Jesus is the Savior. It is not the baptism but what happened afterwards.
When Moses was an infant his believing mother placed him in the place of death, the river Nile. She trust-ed in God to save her son. God did intervene! Years later Moses had an infant nation on his hands, he placed them in the waters of the Red Sea, trusting God to intervene, to save them.
Jesus goes down into the waters of the Jordan, to take each one of us, eventually, to be placed in the waters of Baptism. For God will intervene to save us.
The moment Jesus emerged the heavens opened. Why? At the dawn of creation, the Spirit of God hov-ered over the creative Word of God, to bring all things into being. The Spirit of God is hovering over the Incarnate Word at the beginning of redemption.
A sign of the Holy Spirit is seen. Remember the dove of Noah at the flood time? Jesus is the Messenger or Mediator between God and men. He is the Messiah!
Do you think that everybody heard the voice? Everybody saw the dove? Mt says: Jesus saw and heard! Once God has told us who Jesus is, there is no other opinion. It is a final word who Jesus is!
When Jesus emerged from the water the great light was seen coming out of the water. Jesus blessed the waters of Jordan, beginning the great stream of the grace in the Sacrament of Baptism, for the rest of us.
See (Ps 2:7) & (Is 42) From all eternity God spoke that a Son of David would be the Son of God. It is about the chosen Servant of God, the One in whom God delights.
The list of titles: Jesus is the Humble One, who identifies Himself with all the sinners on earth and ac-cepts baptism; the Righteous One, who will do the God’s will in all circumstances; the One on whom the Spirit rests; the Beloved Son; Jesus is the Chosen One; the Anointed Messiah; the Mediator be-tween God and men. He is a Davidic, Messianic King.
Stand with Jesus in the waters of the Jordan and say: Father allow me to know You more deeply, more completely. Allow me to hear from You that I am Your beloved child in whom You delight. Allow me to hear it. Whatever happens in our lives there is no substitute for this knowledge and this experience.
