Welcome toHofstra University! You and thousands of other students who call Hofstra their home can now gain access to campus resources, over 200 student clubs and organizations, and the many social, cultural and career opportunities of the New York metropolitan area.

We have planned an exciting week filled with programs and activities that will help you get better acquainted with Hofstra’s campus and become an engaged and involved student. Please look through this program and plan your Welcome Week by selecting events that interest you. Be sure not to miss the “Pride” events.

You must have your HofstraCard with you at all times. You will need it for identification, meal/snack purchases (if you have a dining plan), and entry into events and residence halls (if you live on campus).

This week, sophomores, juniors and seniors will serve as your Welcome Week Leaders (WWLs). WWLs will assist you during move-in, help run programs and events, and lead discussions. You will meet your WWL at 3:45 p.m. today (Friday, August 28). Your check-in information will tell you where to meet your leader. Look for the “Welcome Week Leader” symbol throughout this program for scheduled meals and events. Take time to get to know your leader and build friendships with your group members! And, most important, have fun!

About Our Welcome Week CoordinatorsJaden De Guzman ‘15Jaden de Guzman did not own a pair of jeans or boots until she moved to Hofstra nearly two years ago. Despite having traded the warm, sunny beaches of Miami, Florida, for four seasons and the occasional snowstorm (with the inclusion of cannoli), she considers the switch to be an even trade. As a music education major, Jaden entered college as an aspiring jazz vocalist with a passion for teaching the world’s children how to sing. She has since been introduced to the wide and wonderful world of musicology, where she is actively pursuing her obsession with John Coltrane and the psychology of music. You can catch her singing with the Hofstra Chorale and Chamber Choir or during a 2 a.m. practice session in Monroe Lecture Center. Otherwise, Jaden can be found traversing the sixth floor of the Axinn Library or expressing her sincere love for chicken wings.

Taylor Robinson ‘16In West Philadelphia born and raised, on the playground is where she spends most of her days (because she works at the Child Care Center on campus, and she has to). Taylor Robinson, Hofstra senior and feline enthusiast, is a psychology major and civic engagement minor who aspires to make the world a little less “wacky.” When she entered Hofstra in 2012, Taylor immediately fell in love with the University and with the Big Apple, and vowed to work her butt off until she made a home for herself here. Now in her final year, Taylor has succeeded, thanks to various internships in Manhattan and Brooklyn, which will hopefully secure her a job upon graduation (fingers crossed). On campus, Taylor is active in the Hofstra Hunger Project, Hofstra 4 Congo, and Psychology Club, and she is vice president of the Shooting Club. During her sophomore year, she founded a chapter of the national nonprofit organization Friendship Circle at Hofstra and continues to serve as club president. Her mantra, “I’ll sleep when I’m dead,” has resulted in lots of coffee drinking to fuel her academic success, which has secured her membership in Hofstra University Honors College, Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society and Psi Chi International Honor Society in Psychology. You may find Taylor running around the track at the Mack Fitness Center or working as a tutor at the University Tutorial Program … or, if you’re lucky, you’ll catch her walking her kitten, Piper, around on a glittery pink leash on South Campus.

Hayley Kinn ‘16Hayley Kinn was originally going to go to a school 45 minutes away from her hometown of Sumner, Iowa. At the last minute, she decided Hofstra was the school for her (without even visiting). After falling in love with the campus during Orientation, Hayley entered Hofstra in fall 2012. Now, as a senior, she is excited to work as a Welcome Week coordinator for the Class of 2019! She is majoring in global studies while working on minors in music, anthropology, and community health. You will probably see her running all over campus because she is a student coordinator for Resident Safety, an active member of Phi Sigma Sigma, vice president of recruitment counseling for Panhellenic Executive Board, a founding member of SASS (Student Advocates of Safe Sex), and a member of It Ends With Us. Some of her favorite things include Witches Brew (a unique local café), fun headbands, hot sauce, laughing, and staying busy.

Tori Succi ‘16This Disney princess hails all the way from the land of Mickey, aka Kissimmee, Florida. Now starting her senior year at Hofstra — wow, that went by fast! — she is pursuing a double major in dance and public relations. Having had many internships in New York City, including EKPR and College Lifestyles Online Magazine, she hopes to build a career in the public relations field. Around Hofstra you may see this busy bee wearing her sorority letters (Phi Sigma Sigma), going to rehearsals for Danceworks or Movom (the Dance Department club) or working as a teacher’s assistant for Hofstra’s Saturday Classes for Young People program. Some of Tori’s favorite things about Hofstra: the beautiful campus, the many familiar faces she sees every day, and the fact that there is always a shady tree available for her to sit under and read. Tori is so excited for this Welcome Week and hopes that you are too.

RISE ABOVE AT HOFSTRA!Welcome to Welcome Week 2015! This summer you were asked to read Topdog/Underdog by Suzan-Lori Parks. Among many themes within the play, overcoming obstacles and thriving under adversity are prevalent – not only in the reading, but in our everyday world. During Welcome Week you will be introduced to the many programs Hofstra offers to help you through whatever you may face throughout your college experience. You will also become familiar with opportunities that are available to you as Hofstra students. Our goal is to show you the path to success, so you can rise above your own expectations.

Hofstra P.R.I.D.E. PrinciplesAt Hofstra, we’re all about showing our Pride. Whether it’s attending an athletic event, volunteering time as a tutor, or joining an organization on campus, students can show their school spirit in a variety of ways. In order to do this, it’s important to know what we represent as a community. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the P.R.I.D.E. Principles, since we apply these principles not only to our behavior, but also to academic integrity.
