College is about more than preparing for a specific career. It’s about discovering what excites and motivates you … about seeing what the future has to offer and discovering what you bring to the table. Your unique combination of personal talents and traits that will help you leverage what you learn to get where you want to be. Your edge.

For 75 years, Hofstra University has sharpened the minds of students in pursuit of their dreams — even those they didn’t know they had. Since our founding in 1935, we have become a nationally and internationally recognized educational institution, and one of only four universities in New York state with schools of law, business and, beginning in 2011, medicine. Our inspiring professors, 91 percent of whom hold the highest degree in their fields, offer a broad and challenging curriculum to help you expand your horizons.

And the Hofstra campus is not just another pretty place. We’re an officially designated arboretum and a member of the American Public Gardens Association. We’ve blended natural beauty, sculpture, architecture and state-of-the-art technology to create an ideal environment for learning. Hundreds of experiences await you in sports, the arts, and a huge array of organizations and events. Best of all, Hofstra’s secure suburban enclave is only a short train ride from everything New York City has to offer — including unmatched internship and job opportunities.

As you consider what will be one of the most important decisions of your life thus far, I hope the information here and on our website at hofstra.edu will provide you with a glimpse of the excellent education and campus experience Hofstra has to offer.

You are looking at Hofstra at a very important point in our history. As we celebrate our 75th year, Hofstra has emerged as a major university with national reach and international perspective. Our political and policy symposia have earned the attention of scholars and media alike, culminating in the University hosting the third and final 2008 U.S. presidential debate and offering our students an extraordinary opportunity to participate in one of the most talked about events of the last decade. We have partnered with the nation’s third-largest health care system to launch the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine at Hofstra University in 2011 — New York state’s first new medical school in more than 40 years. And throughout our campus, students in the arts, sciences, humanities, business, and other programs are discovering and developing their potential.

As a safe, energized and active suburban campus with strong ties and easy access to everything New York City has to offer, Hofstra has become increasingly attractive to career-oriented students. “As the academic director of the Zarb School’s Martin B. Greenberg Trading Room, I am proud that Hofstra students receive hands-on experience with world-class resources such as the Bloomberg Professional terminals. I am excited to teach in the trading room, and our students are extremely motivated to take courses in this unique learning facility. The skills they learn in the trading room make them even more marketable in the ever-changing world of finance.”

Ranked among the top 100 undergraduate business programs by Bloomberg Businessweek, the Frank G. Our distinguished faculty include both academic experts and business leaders who have dedicated themselves to helping prepare tomorrow’s business professionals. They can help you connect with future employers, find real-world mentors and explore the myriad internship opportunities that abound in the Long Island/New York City metropolitan area.

Whether you focus on management, marketing, accounting, finance, entrepreneurship, information technology or any other business field, the Zarb School is committed to fostering an environment that values diversity, encourages personal and professional growth, and cultivates greater awareness of issues of ethics and social responsibility. Our graduates don’t just know business; they emerge with a deeper

“Make sure that what you’re doing today affects what you’re doing tomorrow, because at the end of the day it’s your life, and you want to have something to show. What I enjoy most about marketing is that it’s not just about numbers or selling something — it’s about the connections you make with people. Why do they want to buy this product? Why do they want to support this company? It’s your job as a marketer to connect the product with the people who consume it.”

At Hofstra University’s School of Communication, you will receive a broad-based liberal arts education with real-world applications, close to the heart of the media world. Our students study in all areas of communication, with undergraduate programs in the Departments of Radio, Television, Film; Journalism, Media Studies and Public Relations; and Speech Communication, Rhetoric and Performance Studies. With the guidance of our accomplished faculty, access to better technology than many professional broadcast facilities, and the entire world of New York and international media internship opportunities within reach, you will graduate with a real edge in a highly competitive industry.

Our journalism students practice their craft by reporting for Nassau News, Pulse Magazine or the Hofstra Chronicle, and our television majors work

with them on both curricular and extracurricular shows produced at Dempster Hall’s sophisticated studios. Most of our radio majors are on staff at WRHU, 88.7-FM (Radio Hofstra University), which has the largest radio news department on Long Island. And many of our students are active members of various professional organizations, such as the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), Professional Organization in Speech Education (POISE), and Hofstra Association of Black Journalists (HABJ), as well as student organizations such as the Hofstra Filmmakers Club (HFC) and Hofstra Entertainment Access Television (HEAT). These are just a few of the opportunities available for students to become involved at Hofstra while polishing their skills and preparing for their future.

“I love teaching at Hofstra because the students are smart and very spirited. They’re not afraid to take risks, intellectually or personally, and that means I can take risks too. I can be very creative in the way I teach, which is really liberating and a lot of fun.”

“For me, being a teacher is not about disseminating content knowledge. It’s about being someone special in students’ lives, helping them make decisions about the future. If you treat students with respect and run a class that’s fair and fun, you can make a course challenging.”

Bruce Torff, Ed.D.Professor of Teaching, Literacyand Leadership

If you are passionate about helping others learn, grow and stay healthy, Hofstra’s School of Education, Health and Human Services is just the place to begin your professional training. Whether you see yourself as an educator, counselor or therapist, or as a community health or medical professional, we offer the ideal combination of relevant classes, forward-thinking and inspirational professors, and the latest in educational technology to prepare you for leadership in these high-demand fields.

For many of our students, undergraduate education is only the beginning. In fact, Hofstra’s graduate education program has been included in U.S. News & World Report’s list of America’s Best Graduate Schools. We offer a wide range of undergraduate program options in teacher, counselor, and administrator education that can lead to further higher education in the pursuit of certifications, graduate degrees or advanced certificates. In addition to outside internship, employment and educational opportunities, our students can find real and meaningful experiences at Hofstra’s Joan and Arnold Saltzman Community Services Center, where

four clinics and a fully licensed early childhood program provide vital services to Hofstra employees and the community at large.

On the health and human services side, Hofstra is preparing the next generation of health care professionals, those who will be charged with making health reform work in the coming decades. Our undergraduate programs in community health are addressing public health policies and issues at the very heart of reform efforts, and are exceptional springboards to careers in health administration and management. What’s more, the school’s undergraduate health programs provide an excellent foundation for those preparing for graduate study in pursuit of a broad range of clinical health care professions, including medicine, dentistry, veterinary sciences, nursing, nutrition, physical therapy and physician assistant studies. And with the new Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine at Hofstra University opening its doors in 2011, our program is growing even stronger.

“The Model United Nations in my sophomore year of high school really opened my eyes to the process and importance of international relations. With the help of my professors, I re-created it here at Hofstra, and we participated in the New York City Model United Nations competition. I would like to focus on international relations, working to formulate foreign policies for elected officials, ideally at the U.S. Department of State.”

Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is the academic heart of Hofstra University and the oldest school at Hofstra. We believe that the liberal arts — the humanities, natural sciences and social sciences — are the foundation for all higher education.

Our main objective is to help students gain an understanding of how people have attempted throughout history to render the breadth of human experience intelligible. Working with our highly respected faculty and with one another in an atmosphere of freedom and tolerance, you will develop critical thinking skills and learn to access and analyze information and ideas in a technologically sophisticated world.

Our students also master the oral and written communication skills required for leadership in any field, and we challenge all students to be active and ethical participants in a society characterized by increasing interdependence and diversity.

No matter what your future holds, Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will help you cultivate the moral judgment, aesthetic sensibilities, and emotional maturity you need as a socially responsible member of your local, national and global communities.

“A brilliant college president once told me, ‘Colleges and universities have qualities you can almost sum up in human personality terms.’ It’s true. Hofstra is forward-thinking and adaptable, intelligent, always wanting to do better and be better — exactly like so many of its students. And that is a great reason to teach here.”

“It’s about the conversation. Honors College is an invitation into a conversation that reaches back to the beginnings of human history and extends to the very specific questions, problems, hopes, and dreams students bring to our classrooms and offices.”

Warren Frisina, Ph.D. Associated Professor of Religion and Dean, Hofstra University Honors College

If you are a highly motivated, high-achieving student who wants to make the most of your college years, Hofstra University Honors College is waiting to challenge your mind and hone your critical thinking skills to a razor-sharp edge. An intimate community dedicated to discovery and intellectual engagement, the students, faculty and administrators at Honors College are committed to sharing the pursuit of excellence at all levels. Our students come from every undergraduate major – from accounting to women’s studies – and they can be found in leadership roles in virtually every club and activity on campus.

All entering Honors College students begin their Hofstra careers with a two-semester sequence of four courses called

Culture & Expression. Together, each year’s class follows a common reading list, attends class-wide lectures, and actively explores topics in depth through small group discussions with some of Hofstra’s most highly regarded faculty. In fact, Honors College faculty members are specifically selected for their ability to fire your imagination and stir you to achieve more than you ever thought possible.

Honors College graduates have gone on to outstanding graduate programs such as the law schools at Harvard, Columbia, NYU, University of Pennsylvania, and Georgetown, and to Yale University's Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program.

“I came to college to learn — so I chose global studies because it interests me; photography and dance, the same. Hofstra’s Honors College takes advantage of its relatively close proximity to New York City, and it’s given me access to museums, shows, and countless cultural and dance opportunities that an honors college elsewhere might not be able to offer. That, plus the international study opportunities I’ve taken, has let me accrue a lot of life experience in a short amount of time, so I do not worry over being able to find a position that I am passionate about when I am ready.”

Meet Your Mentors

hofstra.edu 11

The interchange between teacher and student sparks all learning. Hofstra University’s more than 500 full-time faculty members are noted scholars, writers, scientists, artists and professionals — but above all, they are inspiring teachers. Among them you will find National Endowment for the Humanities Fellows, Guggenheim Fellows, an Emmy Award winner, major grant recipients and dozens of respected textbook authors. Our professors, more than 91 percent of whom hold the highest degree in their fields, are acknowledged leaders in a wide variety of arenas, and they share a passion for passing on what they have learned and being the agent of your enlightenment.

And we make certain you have every opportunity to establish life-changing, sometimes lifelong relationships with these extraordinary men and women. In fact, one thing that distinguishes Hofstra from so many other colleges is that virtually all of our faculty teach undergraduates, and many of our most eminent faculty make it a point to teach our newest students. What’s more, at Hofstra all classes are led by faculty members, not teaching assistants. With small average class sizes (48 percent of our classes have fewer than 20 students), you’ll be in an environment that encourages a free exchange of ideas.

You won’t find our professors only in their classrooms, either. They take pride in being accessible, during and after office hours. They welcome your questions, and can offer not only the academic knowledge of an expert but also the life experiences of one who has labored in the field you wish to explore. They will work with you, inspire you, and teach you to stay hungry for knowledge and constantly quest for self-improvement.

At Hofstra, that’s what we call teaching — and a great way to find your edge.

We want our new students to feel comfortable with New York City right away. So, each fall term, we offer faculty-organized, course-related trips. For example, this fall the politics and history cluster traveled to Ellis Island, the geology seminar climbed over rocks in Central Park, the business cluster visited Bloomberg Media, the engineering cluster traveled to Underwriters Laboratory, a seminar studying the problem of child labor worldwide visited UNICEF and Human Rights Watch, the pre-med cluster explored the wonder of the human form at Bodies: The Exhibition, and the labor studies seminar enjoyed a walking tour of Chinatown. We want our students to think of New York City as one of our classrooms — albeit a rather large one. These trips are one way to introduce you to all the city has to offer.

When Jordan Gee arrived at Hofstra, he expected it to be a great next step toward a career in television production. What he didn’t expect was a world of new friends and a positive, collaborative educational atmosphere.

Before coming to Hofstra, Jordan had already turned a successful internship into a part-time job at MSG Network, and working as a production assistant on telecasts of New York Islanders hockey games keeps him busy during the long hockey season. But that hasn’t kept him from plugging into the Hofstra scene.

“At Welcome Week, the students and staff really went out of their way to make sure everyone felt like part of the community. And that’s the way it’s been in all my classes. The faculty, the students … everybody wants to help each other however they can.”

Jill Reinholt chose Hofstra University for its close proximity to New York City and because of the feeling she got when she first stepped foot on campus. “I did some surveys online, and Hofstra kept showing up, so I visited – and I loved it. It was by far the most welcoming university.”

In Jill’s opinion, Hofstra has lived up to its early promise. As a first-year Honors College student enrolled in Culture & Expression, she had the chance to get to know a small group of students and teachers intimately as they explored the connections among disciplines. “The friends I’ve met, the administrators … everyone has just been great.”

But Jill reserves special praise for her teachers. “I’ve been amazed by the professors here. I came in with the expectation that they would be more interested in their research. … that students wouldn’t be their No. 1 priority. But that hasn’t been the case. They’re right there with us, and they’re willing to help.”

Andrew Schuetz knew in the sixth grade that he wanted to own his own business. When he found out that there was such a thing as an entrepreneurship major, he thought, “Wow … this is perfect!” For Andrew, deciding on a school meant choosing among the relatively few colleges and universities that offered an entrepreneurship major. “I sat in on a class at my top three choices,” he said, “and my classroom experience at Hofstra [in Dr. Hayes’ entrepreneurship class] just blew me away. There were only about 20 students in the class, and it seemed like the professor knew the students on a personal level. It was just what I wanted.”

Andrew’s first three years at Hofstra have been, in a word, “fantastic.” “There are so many opportunities here,” he said. “There are 170 clubs on campus, and then there’s the city. It’s been a great experience.”

As a first-year student, Andrew enrolled in a First-Year Connections cluster that included economics and math courses. “The cluster was amazing,” he said, “and it was a nice way to meet other students with a common interestin business.”

Going to college in America wasn’t part of Kinni Akpabot’s original plans, but circumstances in her homeland and learning about Hofstra’s plan to start a medical school clinched her choice of colleges.

“After I took the SATs, I received information about Hofstra by e-mail,” said Kinni, who dreams of working for the United Nations’ World Health Organization. “I’ve wanted to become a doctor for a long time, and when I read that Hofstra was opening a medical school, I decided it was the right place to start studying.”

Kinni’s first year was a whirlwind of activities, including singing in the Hofstra Gospel Ensemble, participating in the Model United Nations program, serving as secretary of both the Residence Hall Council and the Pre-med Club, and volunteering at nearby Winthrop-University Hospital.

“There are so many things available to us on campus … so many opportunities. The best equipment in my chemistry classes, a wonderful fitness center, and especially really helpful advisers who want you to succeed.”

“During my student orientation, I remember having a conversation with a senior who was in the process of successfully starting his own business. I remember thinking how far off starting my own business seemed for me, but this aspiring entrepreneur took the time to encourage my own path. Q. What sets Hofstra University apart?A. A distinguished faculty, a stunning, dynamic suburban campus less than an hour away from New York City, breakthrough academic and cultural programs, state-of-the-art facilities … these are just a few of the factors that bring students to Hofstra University.

Q. Is it true that Hofstra is an arboretum?A. Yes. Hofstra’s lush, 240-acre campus is one of only 500 institutions nationwide that has been designated an arboretum by the American Public Gardens Association. With more than 12,000 trees, as well as ornamental bushes, flowers (especially tulips!) and more than 60 outdoor sculptures, our campus offers students a beautiful, inspiring atmosphere in which to live and learn.

Q. What can I do outside the classroom at Hofstra?A. Hofstra’s campus is always buzzing. With more than 500 on-campus cultural events each year, a competitive NCAA Division I athletic program, and more than 170 student clubs and organizations, you might have trouble deciding what to do first!

Q. What if I like smaller classes, where the professors actually know me by name?A. Then Hofstra is a perfect choice for you. We keep our class sizes small, averaging just 22 students, and with a student-to-faculty ratio of 14-to-1, we make sure our students get the personal attention they need to succeed.

Q. What can I do in New York City?A. What can’t you do in the Big Apple? Thousands of restaurants. Hundreds of museums and galleries. Dozens of sporting venues and events. See a Broadway show, a rock concert or a poetry jam. Visit the Bronx Zoo, Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, Ellis Island, or any one of the scores of sites that make New York City the greatest city in the world. And, just as important, when you’re ready for employment or an internship, you’ll find open doors at some of the world’s largest and most prestigious companies, and in just about every industry.

Q. I want to explore New York City, but I don’t have a car … what do I do?A. Do what thousands of Long Islanders do every day — take the Long Island Rail Road! The Hempstead and Mineola stations are easily accesible by car, bus or Hofstra’s own shuttle, and trains run day and night. You’ll be in downtown Manhattan (and the hub of the largest subway and bus system in the United States) in just 45 minutes!

Q. If I do have a car, can I keep it on campus?A. Certainly. All you need is a registration sticker (which is free for students).

your questions ...Q. When it’s time to look for a job, will Hofstra help? A. Absolutely. Hofstra’s Career Center will help you prepare for a career from your first day on campus and will continue to offer career guidance long after you’ve graduated. Of course, you can also turn to Hofstra’s extensive alumni network.

Q. How about living and dining on campus? A. Hofstra has a wide variety of residence halls and living options, from our high-rises to two-story residence clusters, including two halls reserved for first-year students and another for Hofstra University Honors College students. And for our first-year students, we do our best to match roommates with compatible personality traits and habits. You can also find your roommate on Facebook. As for dining choices, Hofstra features 21 on-campus eateries where you’ll find fare ranging from Asian to vegan, and everything in between.

Q. Is Hofstra safe? A. At Hofstra, we are committed to the safety of our students. Campus safety measures include high-tech security in all residence halls, well-lit paths and conveniently located security phones, and a professional staff of more than 65 full-time Public Safety officers supplemented by hundreds of student safety employees. In addition, the University has implemented an effective emergency response plan to enhance our crisis response and communication capabilities. An overview of this plan is available at hofstra.edu/publicsafety.

Q. How hard is it to get into Hofstra?A. In the past two years, slightly more than half of all applicants were admitted, so we’re very competitive. The average SAT score for students enrolled in fall 2010 was 1171 (not including the writing portion of the SAT). However, we consider a candidate’s entire record in addition to grades and test scores.

Q. What if I ever need help, guidance or support at Hofstra? A. We have excellent first-year programs to help you adjust to both the academic and social life of the University. Every first-year student at Hofstra has a dedicated advisement dean (if you have declared your major) in addition to access to tutors and many other support services. The Office of Student Leadership and Activities staff, as well as counselors at Hofstra’s Saltzman Community Services Center, are also available to students. We’re with you every step of the way.
