Center and campground, 5000 W. Canal St. North, Belle Glade, will be the site of the Black Gold Jubilee on April 14, starting at noon. The annual festival celebrates the harvest. The entire Glades region of Belle Glade, Pahokee, South Bay and Canal Point comes together to celebrate the annual jubilees.

Belle Glade’s annual Black Gold Jubilee is a much-anticipated festival born from the 1976 Bicentennial celebration which was spon-sored by the City of Belle Glade in commemo-ration of our great nation’s 200th birthday. The year following that memorable celebration, a group of citizens organized a similar festival hoping to imitate its success; however, the fo-cus of the celebration would shift to the area’s rich soil, nicknamed “Black Gold” for its ability to produce bountiful harvests year after year. In 1978, the fi rst offi cial Black Gold Jubilee kicked off in McDonald Park, next to the Belle Glade Branch Library. Since that time, the Ju-bilee has grown to be the best-attended festi-val in the area, drawing several thousand res-idents and visitors from across South Florida.

The jubilee is preceded by multiple events, including the Little Miss Black Gold Pageant, Children’s Fishing Contest and the Harvest Queen Pageant. On the morning of the jubi-lee, the festivities begin with a 5K Walk/Run and a 10K Run on Torry Island, followed by the Main Street Parade. After the parade, everyone heads out to Torry Island for a full day of fun, food and entertainment. The variety of food ranges from Greek to Cajun, and from down-home barbecue to soul food. The child-friend-ly atmosphere brings families out for a day of free games and kid’s rides while the adults en-joy music under a covered stage as well as a wide variety of vendors’ wares. In the evening,

activities move to the amphitheater stage for an evening of musical entertainment followed by the grand fi nale – a spectacular fi reworks display over the lake.

The highlight of the 2018 festival will be free concerts by Joe Diffi e, who will perform at 7:30 p.m., and 7 Bridges, who will perform at 5:30 p.m.

Joe Diffi e is a Grammy and ACM Award

winner. He is a member of the Oklahoma Mu-sic Hall of Fame and has been a member of the Grand Ole Opry for over 20 years.

The Florida Rights Restoration Coalition and the Players Coalition are hosting a local Second Chance Workshop at Glades Central High School, 1001 S.W. Ave. M. in Belle Glade, on Friday, April 13, at 5 p.m. The purpose of the event is to help returning citizens, people

who have past felony convictions, with em-ployment assistance, occupational licenses, rights restoration and more. The workshop will run from 5 to 8 p.m.

“We are excited that Anquan Boldin will be in his hometown on Friday to help em-power people and strengthen our local com-

munities,” said Desmond Meade, president of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition. “We hope that returning citizens, their families and those who want a more inclusive community will help spread the word out about this im-portant event.”

tary School’s Visual, Performing and Com-munication Arts School proudly presented Disney’s “The Aristocats Kids.” Students in third through fifth grades sang, danced and acted out the school’s debut musical. The performance marked the conclusion of a 17-week musical theater residency Glade View was selected to participate in with The Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts and Disney Musicals in Schools.

Glade View was one of only four Title I el-ementary schools in the school district to be chosen for this three-year partnership. The program is an outreach initiative developed by Disney Theatrical Productions to create sustainable theater programs in under-re-sourced elementary schools.

Since November, students have been rehearsing their lines, songs and choreogra-phy in preparation for the school’s big per-formance. Students were guided by Kravis Center teaching artists Katie Fredrickson and

Mary Stucchi, as well as their Glade View fine arts team: Mr. Breland, Mr. Geffrard, Ms. Kelly, Mrs. Stewart-Bailey and Mr. White.

The cast presented a full-scale production with professional costumes and set designs that wowed students, teachers, staff, parents, family members and friends. The work of the entire “The Aristocats Kids” team helped to create a foundation for continued performing and visual art opportunities for students at Glade View Elementary and the community.

Special guests for the performance in-cluded the mayor of Belle Glade, Steve Wilson, Palm Beach County School District Glades Regional Superintendent Carlene Mil-len, Director of Federal and State Programs Dr. Anthony Lockhart, Mary Evans and Ed-die Rhodes of the Tri-City Education Com-mittee, Tracy Butler and Keena Gumbiner of the Kravis Center Education Department, business partners Enoch Thomas, Christina Morales and Meredith Trim from the Ventus Charitable Foundaiton. The foundation also provided financial support toward the pro-duction costs of the event.

Students take first, second and third place in Afro Arts Mathletics competition!

On Saturday, March 17, students from Gove Elementary competed against other local schools in a mathematics vocabu-lary competition. “Math Squad” teams in grades three through five were created by Gove’s math coach, Jessica Michno. The Math Squad and Ms. Michno worked hard to prepare for this event. Students compet-ed at Gove Elementary first. The top three winners from each grade level went on to the local competition at the festival. For each grade level that competed, a student from Gove earned an award! Third-grader Magaly Robles won third place. Fourth-grader Evelin Guzman won second place. Fifth-graders Uriel Calihua, Gustavo Barrera and Elizabeth Robles swept the competition and won all three places! Congratulations!

Springs man died in a traffi c crash on Tuesday, April 3.

A Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s Offi ce (PBSO) news release stated that at 11:51 a.m., a 1999 Freightliner operated by George Ter-ry Jr., 66, of Belle Glade, was traveling north-bound on U.S. 27 in the 1400 block in Belle Glade.

A 2008 Kia Sportage operated by Donna Bower-Knaack, 77, of Cumming, Ga., and a 2005 Harley Davidson Electra motorcycle oper-ated by Steven Patierno, 62, of Coral Springs, were stopped in the construction zone on U.S. 27. Traffi c was stopped by a fl agman work-ing in the construction zone, so construction equipment could be moved.

The Freightliner approached from the rear and, for unknown reasons, was unable to stop. The Freightliner collided with the Sportage, which caused the Sportage to launch forward and into the rear of the motorcycle. The driver of the motorcycle, Mr. Patierno, was ejected from the motorcycle and onto the ground.

The Sportage and motorcycle were redi-rected in a northeast direction, which left Mr. Patierno exposed in the roadway. The Freight-liner continued northbound and ran over Mr. Patierno.

It was reported that Mr. Patierno was pro-nounced dead at the scene. Mr. Terry and Ms. Bower-Knaack were not injured in the acci-dent. Both were wearing their seat belts.

Motorcyclist dies in crash

BELLE GLADE — One Belle Glade man is dead and seven Belle Glade passengers re-ceived serious injuries when the vehicle they were traveling in overturned on Friday, April 6.

A Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) news re-lease stated that at 4:55 a.m. a 2003 Chevrolet Venture driven by Wilbert Janvier, 50 of Belle Glade was traveling southbound on State Road 9 (Interstate 95) in Martin County. Preliminary investigation determined that the tire blew out on the Chevrolet and Mr. Janvier lost control of the vehicle. The Chevrolet overturned.

It was reported that Mr. Janvier suffered fa-tal injuries and was confi rmed deceased at the scene. All seven passengers received serious injuries sustained in the crash. Passengers trav-eling in the Chevrolet were Betty Pierre, Lorcius Juste, Lifaite Joassaint, Maria Elliphep, Felix Destin, Joseph Charles and Prosper Charles.

The cause of the crash remains under inves-tigation.

It is unknown whether the passengers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

The investigating offi cers were FHP Troop-er C. Mack, crash investigator, and Corporal S. Rudd, homicide investigator.

Man dies in traffi c crash

partnership with the Glades Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Belle Glade/Pahokee Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., the Palm Beach County Sheriff ’s Offi ce and the Theta Gamma Gamma Chapter of OMega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., hosted its fi rst Men & Boys Forum on Wednesday, March 28.

Held in the school’s auditorium, infl uential men who were homegrown or currently play an integral role in serving the Glades commu-nities served as panelists and spoke to those in attendance about the well-being of manhood to middle and high school students in the Glades area. Discussions included promoting healthy manhood, violence prevention, health and awareness, and building healthy relation-ships.

There was an informative workshop and a question/answer period where young men (and women) were given the opportunity to ask “raw” questions of the men on the panel.

Fund-ing for fiscal year 2016/2017 through fiscal year 2017/18 have been allocated from SHIP. Funds will be made available for first-time homebuyers’ assistance.Hendry County will be hosting two homeowner orientations to explain the

program details and answer questions applicants may have. The first home-owner orientation will be conducted on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at 5:30 pm at the Hendry County Extension Office, located at 1085 Pratt Boulevard, LaBelle, FL 33975. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) gives notice that it proposes to approve No Further Action Proposed with Institutional Controls or with Engineering and Institutional Controls and issue a Site Rehabilitation Com-pletion Order with controls for a contaminated site. The Phillips 66 Company (Phillips 66) is seeking this order in reference to FDEP Site ID # 22-8519722, Former Circle K #7276, 284 Highway 27, Moore Haven, Glades County, Florida, and intends to restrict exposure to contamination in the following manner.

There shall be no use of the groundwater under the Restricted Area. There shall be no drilling for water conducted on the restricted area, nor shall any wells be installed on the Restricted Area other than monitoring wells pre-approved in writing by the FDEP’s Division of Waste Management (DMW) in addition to any authorizations required by the Division of Water Resource Management (DWRM) and the Water Management District (WMD).

For any dewatering activities on the Restricted Area, a plan approved by the FDEP’s DWM must be in place to address and ensure the appropriate handling, treatment, and disposal of any extracted groundwater that may be contam-inated.

Existing storm water features shall not be altered, modified or expanded, and there shall be no construction of new storm water swales, storm water deten-tion and retention facilities or ditches on the Restricted Area without prior written approval from FDEP’s DWM in addition to any authorizations required by the DWRM and WMD. A revised exhibit must be recorded when any storm water feature is altered, modified, expanded, or constructed.

immediately, but on petition to the board shall be afforded a hearing as soon as possible.A person may file a request for an extension of time for filing a petition. The SFWMD may, for good cause, grant the

request. Requests for extension of time must be filed with the SFWMD prior to the deadline for filing a petition for hearing. Such requests for extension shall contain a certificate that the moving party has consulted with all other parties concerning the extension and that the SFWMD and any other parties agree to or oppose the extension. A timely request for extension of time shall toll the running of the time period for filing a petition until the request is acted upon. Filing InstructionsThe petition must be filed with the Office of the Clerk of the SFWMD. Filings with the District Clerk may be made by mail,

hand-delivery or e-mail. Filings by facsimile will not be accepted. A petition for administrative hearing is deemed filed upon receipt during normal business hours by the District Clerk at SFWMD headquarters in West Palm Beach, Florida. The Dis-trict’s normal business hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., excluding weekends and District holidays. Any document received by the office of the SFWMD Clerk after 5:00 p.m. shall be filed as of 8:00 a.m. on the next regular business day. Additional filing instructions are as follows: • Filings by mail must be addressed to the Office of the District Clerk, 3301 Gun Club Road, West Palm Beach, Florida

33406. • Filings by hand-delivery must be delivered to the Office of the District Clerk. Delivery of a petition to the SFWMD’s

security desk does not constitute filing. To ensure proper filing, it will be necessary to request the SFW-MD’s security officer to contact the Office of the District Clerk. An employee of the SFWMD’s Clerk’s office will receive and file the petition.• Filings by e-mail must be transmitted to the Office of the District Clerk at [email protected]. The filing date for a document

transmitted by electronic mail shall be the date the Office of the District Clerk receives the complete document. A party who files a document by e-mail shall: (1) represent that the original physically signed document will be retained by that party for the duration of the proceeding and of any subsequent appeal or subsequent proceeding in that cause and that the party shall produce it upon the request of other parties; and, (2) be responsible for any delay, disruption, or interruption of the electronic signals and accepts the full risk that the document may not be properly filed. Code, initiation of an administrative hearing shall be made by written petition to the SFWMD in legible form and on 8½ by 11 inch white paper. All petitions shall contain:1. Identification of the action being contested, including the permit number, application number, District file number or any

other SFWMD identification number, if known.2. The name, address, any email address, any facsimile number, and telephone number of the petition and petitioner’s

representative, if any.3. An explanation of how the petitioner’s substantial interests will be affected by the agency determination.4. A statement of when and how the petitioner received notice of the SFWMD’s decision.5. A statement of all disputed issues of material fact. If there are none, the petition must so indicate.6. A concise statement of the ultimate facts alleged, including the specific facts the petitioner contends warrant reversal or

modification of the SFWMD’s proposed action.7. A statement of the specific rules or statutes the petitioner contends require reversal or modification of the SFWMD’s

proposed action.8. If disputed issues of material fact exist, the statement must also include an explanation of how the alleged facts relate

to the specific rules or statutes.9. A statement of the relief sought by the petitioner, stating precisely the action the petitioner wishes the SFWMD to take

School District of PBCWEST PALM BEACH — The applica-

tion window for Controlled Open Enroll-ment in Palm Beach County Schools is now open.

The district offers parents and legal guardians the opportunity for their child to apply to attend the Controlled Open Enrollment process.

While no transportation will be pro-vided for these programs, families from outside of Palm Beach County and the schools’ regular attendance zones are el-igible to apply to schools that have avail-ability for enrollment.
