Page 1 of 8 Gujarat Technological University School of Engineering & Technology A report on World Environment Day celebration @GTU- Gandhinagar Campus on 5 th June, 2018 World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated on 5 th of June every year, and is the United Nation's principal vehicle for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of our environment. World environment day was first established to be celebrated every year by running effective campaigns by the United Nations General Assembly and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in the conference on Human Environment began from 5 th to 16 th of June at United Nations in 1972. First time celebrated in 1973 with particular theme “Only one Earth”. First held in 1974, it has been a flagship campaign for raisi ng awareness on emerging environmental issues hosted in different cities of the world. The government of India urged all state Governments and UTs to undertake actions in the States/UTs for creating awareness on environment conversation and theme based awareness to “Beat Plastic Pollution”. In this endeavour, the following suggested initiatives need to be undertaken: Undertaken awareness activities across all schools including poster making, essay writing, quiz competitions etc. Plastic litter clean-up drives in cities and town. Illumination of office premises and other buildings with green lights on 5 th June 2018. Sensitization of general public through print and social media. Making announcements towards curtailing use of plastic in all forms by Government agencies. GTU School of Engineering & Technology has also encouraged faculty members and students to go ahead with their own innovative ideas as to how to beat plastic pollution and initiate activities from today itself leading up to 5 th June 2018 at their level and with local resources.

Major Objectives to Celebrate Environment Day:

■ It is celebrated to make aware the common public about the environmental issues.

■ Encourage common people from different society and communities to actively

participate in the celebration as well as become an active agent in developing

environmental safety measures.

■ Let them know that community people are very essential to inhibit negative changes

towards the environmental issues.

■ Encourage people to make their nearby surroundings safe and clean to enjoy safer,

cleaner and more prosperous future.

around the world have called on big

corporations to do their part to end

single-use plastics

■ We're setting an ambitious new goal:

■ An Act of Blue is any action that

helps to stop single-use plastic from

being created in the first place. It's

inspired by love for our amazing

blue planet and the urgent need to

protect our oceans, waterways,

landscapes and communities.

ALTERNATIVES TO PLASTICS

STEP 1: Say a firm NO to plastic shopping bags

– Cloth Bags, Biodegradable ‘plastic’ bags, Up cycled plastic

bags

STEP 2: Stop buying plastic bottled water and accepting

complimentary bottles

– Durable water bottle + filtered water, Water bottled fitted

with a filter, Water purifying tablets

STEP 3: Consider if you really need a straw – and if yes, opt for a

plastic alternative

– Natural bamboo straws, Stainless steel straws, Paper straws

and Other natural straws

STEP 4: Think before you buy: Plastic toothbrushes, sanitary pads

and disposable cutlery

STEP 5: Reconsider your choices – where to eat and stay, and who

to travel with

As per the initiative taken at GTU School of Engineering and Technology, faculty members

and students collaborated themselves with innovative ideas to be implemented for World

Environment Day to spread awareness among the society and to be an active agent in the

campaign to tag themselves in for #BeatPlasticPollution celebrated and hosted by nationally

by India and to support running effective campaigns by the United Nations General

Assembly and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
