Art Splash addendum

As was reported last month, Art Splash, the museum’s very successful summer program “for kids and their grown-ups,” has moved to the Main Building this year. It will feature a different “Masterpiece” each week with gallery

programs and Splash Studio projects. Guides have been invited to assist with these projects by working at least three shifts during July or August, receiving four credit hours for each three-hour Art Splash shift. If you are interested in par-ticipating please email Emily Schreiner at [email protected].

And now I wish each of you a HAPPY FOURTH of JULY and a most enjoyable summer. See you at the Fall Luncheon if not before!

G uidelines is the monthly newsletter of the PMA Weekday Guides. It is sent by e-mail (pdf format) or U.S. Mail to each Weekday Guide and various Mu-

seum departments, including Education, Membership, Visitor Services, Development and the Executive Offices, among others. The information in Guidelines is intended to be used by Guides in the performance of their volunteer duties and is not intended to be disseminated outside of the PMA family.

SCHOOL GUIDING Linda Thorpe

Would you like to add school guiding at the PMA to your creden-tials? The school-training program run by Barbara Bassett, Cura-tor of Education, School and Teacher Programs at the PMA, be-gins this September.

The training consists of six sessions to be held from 1:00 pm- 3:00 pm on Mondays September 15, 22, 29, October 6, 27 and November 3 and is open to all current Weekday and Weekend guides.

If you are still considering becoming a school guide, remember:

x You do not have to be a former teacher to be a school guide.

x You are not alone with the class. Teachers and chaperones accompany you at all times.

x You are not assigned dates. You pick the dates you are avail-able (at least eight dates per year) and also the tour length you prefer, 1 hour or 1 ½ hours as well as the number of tours per day (1 or 2). At three credit hours per tour, for those of you who are concerned about “making your 100 hours” each year as a PMA weekday guide, this is a way to pick up three or even six credit hours on a given weekday morning.

x You do not need to make hand-outs. If you ever choose to use hand-outs, pre-printed materials are available in the School Education office.

x You are not responsible for all age groups. You will be asked to pick from three categories: Grades K-3, 4-8 or 9-12.

x You do not need to generate new tours. Most of the tours we already give fit nicely into the 24 topics from which one can choose. Consider, too, that there are only 4 items/stops for a one hour tour and 6 items/stops for a 1 ½ hour tour. So, for example, you might choose to give Impressionism, Treasures of the Museum or Medieval Art to Senior Highs or to give Around the World, People, Places and Things or Learning to Look to young elementary students.

x ·Most of the larger exhibitions at the PMA include school groups. As you train for a new exhibit, you will be able to guide student groups as well as the regular adult groups.

Not only can looking at art from a student’s perspective open your own eyes; but as a school guide, you will be doing your part to interest the next generation in the world of the visual arts and ensure adult visitors for the PMA’s future.

Would you like to join the training group? The interest list will be posted on the Guides’ bulletin board, in August, or you may con-tact me at [email protected].

Ann’s Notes

PMA Staff Changes Our Joyce McNeely, Administrator for Park House Guides and Membership Volunteers, will be retiring from the PMA July 11, 2014. Joyce has loved her 19 years with the PMA and all the volunteers. We will miss her positive energy, warm personality, sense of humor and her wonderful way with people. She is looking forward to spending her time with her family, grandchildren and enjoying her free time like many of her volunteers do.

This summer we are also losing some other PMA col-leagues. Beth Yeagle our Director of Membership, left in June to join her husband in Cape Cod. Mark Anthony McGruder is leaving us to move closer to family and take a position at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, North Carolina. Jennifer Parker will be leaving after August 29 to return to her roots of producing large scale athletic events. Join us in wishing them all the best in their next adventures.

A Note from Juliet Child Acts of kindness warm the heart, soothe the soul and make the world turn more gently. It is nice to know that there are still people who take such pleasure in doing special things and making others feel good. Please ac-cept my heartfelt thanks for your generous donations in my name. More than the monetary value, I so greatly ap-preciate the thought behind the gift.

Save The Date ! Weekday Guides Annual Meeting and Luncheon Monday, September 8

Nine of the thirteen guides who stud-ied and gave tours for this wonderful exhibit dined at the Blue Cat Restau-rant in the Fairmount section of Phila-delphia for a farewell celebration to our precious “Treasures”. The food, wine, and conversation were all excep-tional. Included is a photo taken by Harriet Berneman which shows all of the guides after the sumptuous meal.

Listed is an approximation of the sta-tistics for “Treasures from Korea”, which have been amassed so far.

Thanks to all involved!

NEW WEEKDAY GUIDE TRAINING CLASS Sally Newman, Susan Vitale & Beth Williams

We have a class of 33 Weekday Guide Trainees for 2014-16. They are from many diverse backgrounds and are so very ea-ger to start the training in the fall. Over the summer you will see the many new, smiling faces of the Weekday Guide Train-ees. Many of them will be coming on your Introduction to the Collection tours and just generally getting familiar with the layout of the Museum. We have asked them to introduce themselves, not take notes, and just enjoy your tours! It is often said the best teaching is by example. And we know that you are all the best guides and are truly great examples!

Here’s a chance to practice your skills on the new Guides’ website! If you would like to know what credits you have acquired this year we have posted a chart on the website.

There are copies of all the 2013-14 Guide Presentations on China and Japan in a folder in the Guides’ Library.

Thank you for all your excellent Continuing Education pres-entations and theme tours!

We hope you all enjoy a beautiful summer!

EVENTS & EXCURSIONS Nancy Hovnanian & Susan Untereker

GONE FISHIN’ We will see everyone at the Annual Meeting and (Picnic) Luncheon on Mon-day, September 8.

Please save Monday, October 27 for tentative NYC trip to the Rubin Mu-seum (South Asian art) and an architectural tour of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine.

There may be some changes depending on the results from our WG Survey of your E & E preferences.

It’s not too early to mark your calendars for Continuing Edu-cation events planned for 2014-2015. You won’t want to miss any part of this intrepid journey into South Asia and the top of the world.

We begin our trek at the Annual Meeting and Luncheon on September 8th when those guides who need to fulfill their requirements will make selections in lottery fashion for their five-minute presentations and scholarly papers.

The schedule is as follows:

SEPTEMBER 8-- Luncheon, lecture and selection of objects

OCTOBER 8 --First group of presentations. (10:00 am)

NOVEMBER 10-Presentations continue (Note: 10:30 am)

DECEMBER ---------Holiday hiatus

JANUARY 5-------Sessions resume (10:00 am)

Please remember that papers must be received in advance of the date of your presentation.

We will meet in the Committee Room unless otherwise noted.

During the second half of our year, we anticipate exciting curators’ lectures at which time they will share their visions for the newly installed South Asia galleries. With their exper-tise and your well-researched papers, we are certain our-Guides will be inspired to create much anticipated tours in these transformed galleries.

Dates for February, March and April are to be determined.

As we assume our new duties we are looking forward to hearing and checking out your new tours. We will be provid-ing specific dates and times for this. However if you are ready to go now, just email us and we will arrange a time mutually convenient.

Just a brief reminder that you are obliged to either “check-out” on a new tour, or to guide a special exhibition every two years. You can check your status with respect to this re-quirement on the website.

Enjoy the rest of your summer. We look forward to to meet-ing everyone in South Asia and the Himalayas.
