AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL GEM

Surrounded by breath-taking natural beauty and magnificent monuments to human endeavour that span millennia, Al-Ula is one of the world’s greatest wonders. Home to many ancient civilisations, the region is regarded as one of the world’s best preserved heritage sites.

There has been human activity at Al-Ula for thousands of years. The natural presence of ground water was managed by successive civilizations to enable its development into a productive oasis; this continued human ingenuity underpinned its prosperity for millennia.

Al-Ula is one of several oases in north-western Saudi Arabia, the Hijaz region, which were essential for the development of travel and exchange. Al-Ula is one of the most significant of these oases, and was the chosen capital of the Dadanite and Lihyanite civilizations from at least the 6th century BCE, as well as an important location for the Nabataeans. In the first millennium BCE, it was an important station along the trading routes from southern Arabia towards Mesopotamia, Egypt and beyond for valuable commodities, particularly frankincense and myrrh.

One of Al-Ula’s most famous settlements is Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Nabataean city of Hegra, known today as Al-Hijr and Mada’in Salih, was second only to Petra in importance. Notable sites of earlier importance include Dadan, the capital of the Dadan and Lihyan kingdoms, Jabal Ikma, Umm Daraj and hundreds of inscription and petroglyph sites.

The region is also significant to the story of Islam. It is believed that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) visited Wadi Al-Qura a few times, once at the age of 12 with his uncle, again in 7AH, and in 9AH (630CE) on his way to campaign in Tabuk. Al-Hijr is mentioned several times in the Qur’an and gave its name to a Surah (Chapter).

WHAT TO EXPECTThere are so many myths and misconceptions about Saudi Arabia, first time travellers to the Kingdom often have a very different idea of what it will be like to compared to the reality of what they discover when they arrive.

DURING YOUR STAY

Saudi Arabia is, of course, a dry state, meaning no alcohol will be provided during your stay. For those whom this might concern, don’t worry – you’ll be so stimulated by the sights, sounds and wonders of Al-Ula county, you really won’t notice.

Arabic cuisine uses a lot of nuts, particularly pine nuts, and restaurants might not be as familiar with possible allergens as those you may find at home, so do check thoroughly and, ideally, ask someone who is a local if a dish contains something you are allergic to.

As the birthplace of Islam, showing respect for Islamic culture and customs is of paramount importance in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia frowns on unmarried couples sharing accommodation. If you are intending to come with your partner but are unmarried, it is recommended you book separate sleeping accommodation.

In respect of personal privacy you should avoid photographing local people, even at a concert or festival event. To be on the safe side, let your eyes be your camera and hold your memories in your mind rather than on a device.

YOUR SAFETY

It’s worth remembering Saudi Arabia is one of the most visited countries in the world, with millions from across the globe pouring into the country each year for Hajj. Although incidents do happen, these are rare and, if you follow the local customs and respect the culture, you really should have no problems during your visit.

The crime rate in the Kingdom is very low, but, as with everywhere in the world, vigilance is key and some serious crimes do happen.

The recommended hospital for the region is the Prince Abdul Mohsin General Hospital (+966 14 884 3711) which includes an ER.

911 is the number for Emergency Services; 999 for Police; 997 for an Ambulance; 998 for Fire; 993 for Traffic Police.

Discovering new customs and different cultures is part of the art of travel. While you might not understand all of the differences you’ll discover in Saudi Arabia, if you adhere to the directions in this guide, you’ll be sure to find a really warm welcome waiting for you in the Kingdom.

WHAT TO WEAR

We cannot wait to welcome you to Winter At Tantora, and want you to have the very best experience during your stay here.

To help achieve that, we thought it would be a good idea to share some tips and advice with you about what to wear so you’ll feel comfortable throughout your stay.

December and January are great times to visit Al-Ula county, as the climate in the region at this time of year is suitable for most travellers. During the day, the temperature averages a pleasantly balmy 25 degrees, meaning you’re unlikely to be too hot but will certainly benefit from the heat you’re unlikely to find in many places around the world as this time of year.

That said, as in most desert climates, the temperature can drop at night (on average, to about 10 degrees). That means, for evening events, you won’t want your wardrobe to be too summery as you’ll be too cold. A jacket (and a scarf, wrap or pashmina) will certainly be good to have with you when you head out after dark.

We do ask that, at all times, women dress modestly, covering knees and elbows (though it is not essential to cover your head) and wearing loosely fitted clothes.

Of course, if you really want a truly authentic and different experience, you could wear an abaya. You’ll find hundreds of sites dedicated to how to style your abaya online, so adopting this style of dress needn’t limit your self-expression or creativity.

While it’s tempting to go all out in the style stakes when going out for the evening – particularly if you are attending a concert performance – please remember that many events (including the concerts) during Winter at Tantora are taking place in settings that surround you by the awesomeness of nature. As such, comfortable shoes, rather than heels, are highly recommended.

We also recommend you have personal identification (such as your passport) on you at all times, together with your paper or digital event tickets.
