INTRODUCTION

The Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH) is one of Australia’s leading teaching and research hospitals. It is located four kilometres from Brisbane’s central business district and is approximately twenty three kilometres from Brisbane Domestic Airport.

Patients from all over Queensland are referred to PAH for a vast range of medical treatments which means they often travel long distances to get to PAH and require accommodation. PAH does not provide accommodation for patients and their carers or families. The Accommodation Guide has been developed to provide information about some of the apartment and motel-style accommodation close to the hospital.

Patients, their carers and families should make their accommodation booking directly with the accommodation facility of their choice before leaving home. The booking can also be made by the patient’s referring hospital on their behalf.

Transport to the PAH from Brisbane Airport:1. Taxi, or 2. Airport Train: Catch the Airport Train to the City (Central or Roma Street Station), change to the Beenleigh line and travel to Dutton Park Station (closest to the hospital).

PARKING & PUBLIC TRANSPORTMetro Parking Car Park is located adjacent to the hospital as there is no parking in the grounds and extremely limited street parking. The Metro Car Park is available to PA staff and to the public, and entry is via Ipswich Road. A monthly pass is available for long-term visitors - prices available upon request. Bus Stops are located at the front of the PA Hospital on Ipswich Road (inbound to the city) and across the street in front of the shopping centre (outbound from city).

The PA BUS Station is located at the end of Metro Car Park and is a very efficient method of travelling to and from the city.

Dutton Park Railway Station is located close to the PA Hospital near the intersection of Cornwall Street and Annerley Road.TransLink - For public transport information on buses, trains and ferries in the Brisbane City Council area, please phone TransLink on 13 12 30 or check the website: www.translink.com.au

SHOPPING & BANKINGCentro Buranda is a shopping complex located in close proximity to the PA Hospital. There is a variety of smaller shops, which includes a 24-hour convenience store, located directly opposite the main entrance to the hospital.

The Commonwealth Bank has a branch in the local shopping centre.Other nearest banks are at Stones Corner and Annerley - both of which are a short bus ride from the hospital.

ATM Machines at the PA Hospital are located in the foyer of the main building and opposite the Blue Lifts. There is also a number of ATM machines located at the Centro Buranda Shopping Centre

MEDICAL SERVICESA local GP Practice is co-located in the shopping centre and comprehensive pharmacy services are available. Dental services are located close by on the corner of Ipswich Road and Cornwall Street. Radiological services are also within walking distance to the PA Hospital.

The Queensland Health Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme (PTSS) provides financial assistance to patients and their escorts who need to access medical services which are not available within their local area.

Queensland patients who are required to travel more than 50km from their local hospital to the Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH) may be eligible for transport and accommodation subsidies. The gap payment between the actual cost and the subsidy payment must be met by the patient or family.

The accommodation subsidy is up to $60 per night for the patient (if the patient is an outpatient), and an additional $60 per night for an approved escort. If staying with family and friends in Brisbane, a subsidy of $10 per night may be available at the completion of treatment. For patients who travel by car, a subsidy of 30c per kilometer is available, which is calculated on distance between their local hospital and the PAH. If travelling by public transport, assistance is provided for the cost of the least-expensive mode of transport from the local terminal (airport, bus station or railway station) to the terminal to which the patient is travelling. Please remember to keep any transport and accommodation receipts.

Patients who hold specific concession cards or who are dependants younger than 17 years of age receive assistance from the first night. All other patients and their approved escorts must pay for the first four nights of accommodation per financial year.

It is important that people who consider they may be eligible for PTSS make early contact with the PTSS officers, at either their local hospital or the PAH, to ascertain eligibility and lodge an application. The Medical Superintendent at the patient’s local hospital determines what travel and accommodation provisions can be approved.

Patients may be eligible for assistance in securing accommodation options prior to travel and should consult their local hospital or PAH for advice in this regard.
