UNIVERSITY OF LODZ02

Poland, officially the Republic of Poland, is a country in Central Europe, bordered by Germany to the West, Czech Republic and Slovakia to the South and Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania and Kaliningrad Oblast to the East. Poland’s north border is lined by the 528-kilometer coast of The Baltic Sea.

Poland’s history is more than a thousand years of complicated and grand times with outstanding people who have contributed to the history and the history of the world. These are: Nicolas Coper-nicus, who "stopped the Sun and moved the Earth", king Jan Sobieski, who defended Vienna against the Turks, Maria Curie-Skłodowska, who discovered ra-dium and polonium, the great composer Friderick Chopin, President Lech Walesa, Andrzej Wajda, An-drzej Kieslowski, Arthur Rubinstein, Czeslaw Milosz, Pope John Paul II and many, many others.

Thirteen sites in Poland have been put on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.

Polish cities with a thousand-year history invite visi-tors to encounter their unique beauty and charm. Poland’s villages and small towns offer the opportu-nity to get away from the bustle of modern life, but Poland’s greatest attraction is her nature: wild, often untouched, and more diverse than in most coun-tries in Europe and around the world. You can find more or less everything here: alpine mountains, wide beaches, clean lakes, deep forests, internationally-renowned historic monuments, and even a desert in southern Poland. All of that, plus friendly people, make the country very attractive for foreign guests.

Poland has been a member of NATO since 1999, the European Union since 2004 and, in 2007, Poland joined the Schengen Area.

Poland has also one of Europe’s youngest popula-tions – half of its citizens are less than 35 years old. Out of nearly 39 milion Poles almost 2 milion are the university students.

Polish academic traditions date back to the 14th century. Some of Europe’s oldest universities can be found here. Polish universities are well-known all over the world for the high level of education they offer.

Most of all, universities gained the possibility of free and easy exchange of students within European Union countries and opened themselves to the rest of the world. Lodz, being one of the largest cities in Poland (nearly 800,000 inhabitants), is one of the most significant academic centres with more than 120,000 students. Universities offer their students

a wide range of complementary areas of study, ranging from the humanities, through science, en-gineering and medicine, to academic studies like fine arts, music, film and direction.

02 Let’s meet in Lodz!

CITY OF LODZ – CITY OF FOUR CULTURES

The city of Lodz is located in the heart of Poland at a crossing point of many important European routes. In the beginning Lodz was inhabited by four nationalities. The Polish, Jewish, German and Russian inhabitants contributed to the rich and diverse cultural background of the city that the university strives to sustain. The local architecture and history attracts a great number of tourists. The history of Lodz is linked to the rapid 19th century development of the textile industry when the place was called the city of factory chimneys and the Promised Land.

CITY OF FESTIVALS

Every year dozens of cultural events are held in Lodz. Concerts, film, music and theatre festivals attract more and more outstanding guests and tourists. The events worth recommending are:

The most known graduates are: Krzysztof Kieślowski, Roman Polański, Krzysztof Zanussi, Jerzy Skolimowski and Andrzej Wajda. Just like on the Hollywood Boulevard, one can find the Walk of Fame on Piotrkowska Street in Lodz. Moreover, you can learn the history of Polish cinematography in the one and only Museum of Cinematography in Poland.

The cultural-entertainment life concentrates predominantly in the city centre, along Piotrkowska Street. Here are the branded fashion shops, more than 100 pubs, restaurants, clubs, discos and cafes.

UNIQUE ARCHITECTURE

Tenement houses and great residences are now regaining their splendor. The revitalized structures have been transformed into lofts, commercial and entertainment complexes and art centers. Nowa-days the complexes of the 19 th century industrial age are unique on a European scale. You will find here some of the finest examples of Classicism and Italian Neo-Renaissance, through Neo-Baroque and Art Nouveau to Neo-Gothic and Neo-Roman styles of architecture.

Two of them, erected by a famous manufacturer – Karol Scheibler, are situated within the area of so called "Księży Młyn". Another complex used to be-long to Scheibler’s competitor – Izrael Poznański.

At present, the old Poznanski’s complex, is a shop-ping, leisure and culture center called "Manufaktu-ra". Many of old, historical monuments like palaces

First, the candidate is required to complete a set of documents and return them as soon as possi-ble (these may be copies/scans of the documents, since students need to bring the original docu-ments with him/her after being admitted to the university). They are: an application form, copies of the certificates and diplomas, a copy of transcript of records, an English language certificate, a cover let-ter, and a copy of the passport with a picture.

Then, the documents are forwarded to the faculty’s Dean who considers the documents on their mer-its. After the student is conditionally accepted by the Dean, the International Students Office sends the candidate a statement to be signed in which the candidate declares that he/she is aware of the enrolment procedure. The student is accepted con-ditionally because to be officially accepted, the can-didate needs to complete all of the required original documents on his/her arrival. Once the decision is made, the candidate is given bank account infor-mation to pay for the recruitment process. A signed statement and proof of payment must be returned to the International Students Office.

After the candidate has received the legalization of his/her certificates, the International Students Office sends a letter of acceptance to the candidate. This letter is needed for a student visa.

In order to get a visa, the student needs to contact the Polish Embassy or Consulate in his/her country. The documents needed to get a visa are similar or correspond with those needed for the enrolment process into the university. Usually the Embassy asks to see the tuition payment and some financial statement of the funds needed to study in Poland.

Students wishing to obtain a room in the univer-sity dormitory, need to fill in the accommodation request which is available on the International Stu-dents Office’s website: http://www.iso.uni.lodz.pl/index.php/polish/admision (a double room in the university dormitory costs about $120 a month).

Upon arriving in Poland, a student is required to present all the original documents listed above.

An EU citizen can enter Poland with his/her official EU identification or a valid travel document, such as a passport or any other document certifying his/her identity and country of citizenship.

For stays of up to three months no official permit is necessary. For stays exceeding three months, an EU citizen will have to obtain a temporary residence permit, known as a karta pobytu obywatela UE. For students, the residence permit is issued for one year.

Once issued, the residence permit also allows the person to work in Poland. The residence permit and the right to work also extends to the immediate family, such as a spouse and children.

This document will be issued by the Department of Citizens Affairs operated by the Lodz voivodeship regional goverment. The cost for the residence per-mit is about $8.

For details, please contact the Polish Embassy or Consulate in your country.

Individuals who have received a visa for the whole period of stay in Poland are not required to apply for a residence permit for their stay in Poland.

03.11. MEDICAL CARE AND HEALTH INSURANCE

Foreign students, including Erasmus students, are obliged to have a complete health insurance and third party liability for the entire period of their stay in Poland.

EU/EEA citizens

The health care system in Poland is based on gene-ral health insurance.

Individuals covered by the general health insurance are entitled to free health services in Poland at the health care providers who signed contracts with the National Health Fund (NFZ/Narodowy Fundusz Zdrowia). The National Health Fund is the institution responsible for assuring health services for insured individuals and members of their families.

During a temporary stay in Poland, a person enti-tled to health care under EEA rules can receive he-alth services in the following areas:

•   primary health care•   specialist out-patient care•   hospital treatment•   dental treatment•   rescue services and ambulance transport.

In the event medical care is required, a student from a member country staying temporarily in Poland is entitled to free heath care with a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) issued in his/her country or in particular cases with a special certificate. It is ad-visable that the student have copies of these do-cuments. The student is required to present one of these documents along with official identification directly to the health care provider.

•    The student will receive free health services at health care providers who concluded a relevant contract with NFZ.

•    In the event the documents are not complete, the patent will be required to cover the costs of treatment by himself/herself. The same is requ-ired for treatment provided by a health care unit which has no contract with NFZ.

•    If there is a need for hospital treatment, a doctor’s referral is required.

•    In case of a sudden illness, accident or injury a patient receives necessary medical benefits wi-thout a referral.

Page 20: GUIDE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS - UL · the West, Czech Republic and Slovakia to the South and Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania and Kaliningrad Oblast to the East. Poland’s north border

UNIVERSITY OF LODZ020

•    A patient who presents a European Health Insurance Card or a certificate, receives free hospital treatment within the general health care system.

•    Apart from academic and public medical care systems, there is also a well-developed private sector. The costs of medical care may be reimbursed if a student has purchased a health insurance policy in his country before departure.

Non-EU/EEA citizens

The students from non-EU/EEA countries should purchase health insurance in their home country, before departure. According to state health regu-lations foreigners (except for EU/EEA citizens, see above) have to pay for a medical consultation. The cost is then reimbursed by the health insurance company.

More information can be found on: www.nfz.gov.pl

Should the insurance company at home not pay benefits abroad, students must get insurance after arriving in Poland. To obtain health insurance a student can apply to a local branch of the Natio-nal Heath Fund (32 Żeligowskiego Str.). A copy of the person’s passport and confirmation of student status from the university (in Polish language) will be necessary. Monthly payment is about $15. The entire sum (contributions for all the months) can be paid at the beginning, if desired.

Before seeing a doctor it is necessary to register at the registration desk and to present an insurance policy and student identification, known as a legity-macja studencka in Polish. Moreover, a medical unit which provides general assistance is situated on campus. The phone number 42 678 22 67.

To register there for the first time, a student has to fill in a special form (in Polish). It is advisable to go there with a person speaking good Polish to avoid communication problems.

A person preferring the private health service can look for a specialist in a local newspaper listing or a directory. One visit costs about $26-30.

Medications can be bought in a pharmacy, called an apteka.

05.1. SHOPPING

From Monday to Friday shopping hours are usually from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (grocery stores); other shops open at 10:00 a.m. On Saturdays many shops are open between 10:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. Some small local markets may be open on Sundays, too. We strongly recommend purchasing food and basic household needs in large supermarkets which are located throughout Lodz. The large chain super-markets include Tesco, Real, E.Leclerc, and Carrefo-ur. They are open from 8:00 a.m. till 10:00 p.m. and they offer very reasonable prices.

A very popular place for shopping is Bałucki Rynek, a large open-air market in the northern part of Lodz where you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables at very low prices. For other shopping needs, there are three major shopping malls in the city – Manufaktu-ra, Port Lodz and Galeria Łódzka.

Example of prices in Polish zloties

a loaf of bread: 3 zł a litre of milk: 2,50 zł a cup of yoghurt: 1,60 zł a litre of orange juice: 5,50 zł a bottle of mineral water: 2,30 zł a 1 litre bottle of Coke: 4 zł 1kg of ham: 35 zł 1 kg of sausages: 18 zł 1 kg of cheese: 20 zł 1kg of potatoes: 1,30 zł a newspaper: 3 zł a cinema ticket: 25 zł

05.2. CLIMATE AND CLOTHES

Some people associate Poland with the North Pole or the South Pole and amiable polar bears. Unfor-tunately, or maybe fortunately, the only polar bears that we have are kept in the zoo and the legendary cold, snowy winters are not as bad as people think. The average temperature in December, January and February is -2°C. These months are normally snowy which provides splendid opportunities to go skiing in the mountains. We advise bringing heavier coats, gloves, caps and boots.

March, April vary between cold and warm days with average temperatures of 12°C. After that comes a considerable warming up and the weather becomes more bearable. It is very possible to experience heat during the summer months.

The dress code at the university is rather informal. The average Polish student tends to dress very casually when attending lectures, tutorials and so on. There are special occasions throughout the academic year where it might be more appropriate to dress a bit more formally, but it’s not necessary.
