Cartagena de Indias’s neighborhoods throb with Caribbean colors, and new constructions reflect an american influence in their whites and blues that copy the Cartagena de Indias sky. the walls were designed by Bautista antonelli, an Italian military engineer who was hired by phillip II to fortity the main ports of the Caribbean as part of his plan of defense. they were built to defend the city at the end of the 16th century, after an attack by sir Francis Drake.

the project took almost two centuries to complete, and during that time the city was constantly under attack by pirates. the walls were finally finished in 1796. they are now open for tours, and on many an afternoon, couples will sit and watch the sunset from places where cannon shots were fired at pirate ships in olden days.

Cartagena de Indias cuenta con una mezcla arquitectónica fascinante por su variedad. Estructuras militares, como las murallas, baluartes y fuertes, se pueden contemplar al lado de una bien conservada ciudad colonial y republicana.

Los barrios de Cartagena de Indias vibran con colores caribeños y las nuevas construcciones han recibido una influencia americana con blancos y azules imitando el cielo cartagenero.

Las murallas fueron diseñadas por el ingeniero Bautista Antonelli para hacer parte del plan de defensa ordenado por Felipe II para fortalecer los principales puertos del Mar Caribe. Fueron creadas para la defensa de la ciudad a finales del Siglo XVI después del ataque de Francis Drake.

El proyecto tardó casi dos siglos durante los cuales la ciudad recibió numerosos ataques de piratas y fueron finalizadas en 1796. Las murallas se pueden recorrer en su totalidad y no te sorprendas al encontrar parejas de enamorados viendo el atardecer desde donde antes se disparaban los cañones.

A sólo 30 minutos de Cartagena de Indias se pueden descubrir las islas llenas de encantos naturales que hacen vivir un sueño donde las apacibles y tibias aguas color turquesa y playas de arena blanca hacen de esta zona insular un paraíso en la tierra. Así mismo podrá visitar el Oceanario de la Isla de San Martín de Pajarales, un santuario a la vida marina. Del otro lado de la ciudad, en la latitud norte encontrará la Ciénaga de la Virgen, un lugar especial para el avistamiento de aves y donde podrá recorrer los manglares del pueblo pescador de La Boquilla. Car tagena de Indias is Colombia’s top tourist destination, the fourth industrial city and the main port for containers and cruise ships in the country. In order to foster tourism development in the country, the government passed income tax exemptions through decree 2744 of 2003, ar ticle 6 “...tax exempt for hotel services provided in remodeled or enlarged. any revenue from the provision of hotel services at hotels that are remodeled and/or enlarged over the next fifteen (15) year, beginning january 1, 2003, and received by the hotel facility or the operator, will be exempt from income tax charges for a period of thir ty (30) years star ting on taxable year 2003...” Cartagena de Indias’s port infrastructure is the best and most competitive in the country, the bay is one of the safest in latin america and it has the best competency scheme in port services in Colombia, comprised of four private maritime terminals for public service and 24 private docks that belong to import and export companies located in the Mamonal Industrial zone, which carry out various activities, including: general cargo containers and bulk loading; shipyars and hydrocarbon docks, as well as fishing and tourism. strategically the port is ideal for international maritime shipments because of its proximity to the panama Canal, the gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean ports and the East coast of the united states.

Domestic activities are enhanced because of the waterway connections with the rest of the country through the Magdalena river and the Dique Canal. the Mamonal Industrial zone in Cartagena de Indias is considered one of Colombia’s most important industrial areas, with 170 large and medium sized companies that generate about 7.22% of the country’s gross domestic product (as of 2007).

Cartagena de Indias es la primera ciudad turística de Colombia, la cuarta ciudad industrial del país y el principal puerto de contenedores y de cruceros a nivel nacional. Para incentivar el desarrollo turístico del país el gobierno estableció a través del decreto 2744 del 2003 las exenciones tributarias de renta en su artículo 6 “...Renta exenta para servicios hoteleros prestados en hoteles que se remodelen y/o amplíen. Las rentas provenientes de la prestación de los servicios hoteleros en hoteles que se remodelen y/o amplíen dentro de los quince (15) años siguientes, contados a partir del 1 de enero de 2003, obtenidas por el establecimiento hotelero o por el operador, estarán exentas del impuesto sobre la renta, por un término de treinta (30) años a partir del año gravable 2003…” La infraestructura portuaria de Cartagena de Indias es la más completa, moderna y competitiva del país, su bahía es una de las más seguras de Latinoamérica y tiene el mejor esquema de competencia en servicios portuarios nacionales, conformado por cuatro terminales marítimos privados de servicio público, y 24 muelles privados, propiedad de empresas importadoras y exportadoras ubicadas en la Zona Industrial de Mamonal, los cuales, desarrollan diferentes actividades como: carga general, de contenedores y graneles; astilleros y muelles de hidrocarburos, de pesca y de turismo. Estratégicamente, es un puerto privilegiado para el tráfico marítimo internacional de mercancías, debido a su cercanía con el Canal de Panamá, el Golfo de México, los puertos del Caribe y la costa este de los Estados Unidos.

Las actividades nacionales se ven facilitadas por la comunicación fluvial con el centro del país a través del Río Magdalena y el Canal del Dique. Cartagena de Indias cuenta con la Zona Industrial de Mamonal, considerada una de las zonas industriales más importantes de Colombia, en la cual se localizan 170 grandes y medianas empresas que generan cerca del 7,22% del producto interno bruto industrial del país (año 2007).
