Last month was full of activities. Besides a One Day Seminar on Safety ofGates, we joined Computer Society of India in starting Late Shri S.R.ThakoreMemorial Lecture series ; commenced second batch of classes for AMIEDiploma Section A examination with increased response from the students;organised first meet for all-women engineers and had a talk for guidingengineers for post-retirement activities.

We have established Gujarat State AMIE Alumni for those who haveobtained AMIE degree from The Institution of Engineers (India). AMIEdegree holders may join by sending their contact details to us. Alumniprograms are being worked out. We shall announce the same in ournewsletter.

A proposal for opening Students Chapter for Mechanical Engineering Branchat VV P Engineering college has been approved by IEI.We shall see more suchchapters coming up over a period of time.

We are hosting a National Convention of Civil Engineers in August which isa very big event for the Center. Hon Governor shall be inaugurating theprogram. Civil Engineer members, students & faculties are cordially invitedto participate and avail of opportunity to interact with renowned experts.In our endeavor to be more helpful to our members, we seek your valuablesuggestions.We shall try to act upon the same to the extent possible.

Our heartfelt condolences on the sad demise of Shri ChanderRupchand Alimchandani, world renowned structural engineer& our Past President. He was a doyen of structural engineers &a pioneer in the consultancy sector in India. Thoroughlyrespected, he had to his credit many prestigious buildings,bridges etc.He is credited with changing designs of structures

from traditional drab Government designs to iconic structures, treasured overtime. In Gujarat, the legislative assembly building and the town hall inGandhinagar are two such buildings which he can be extremely proud of. Heled M/s Stup India to become a most sought after firm for structural design inthe country. As IEI President he was actively involved in its various activities.Two international FIB events at Delhi & Mumbai have his indelible stamp.In his passing away the IEI has lost one of its leading lights and theconstruction industry one of its brightest stars.May his soul rest in peace.

One Day Seminar : Safety examination, O & M of gates fordams, canals,drains & other structures

One Day Seminar on “ SafetyExamination, Operation & Maintenanceof Gates for Dams, Canals, Drains &Other Structures” was inaugurated byMr. V.B.Patel, retired Chairman, Centralwater Commission and and ex-officioSecretary to Government of India andalso ex-Secretary, Water ResourcesDepartment, Government of Gujarat on3rd July 2015. Mr S.J.Desai, Chairman,Gujarat state Center, Mr. C. V. Nadpara,Hon Secretary; Mr Vivek P. Kapadia,Convener, Technical committee, MrBharat Patel, Past Chairman of theCenter and Mr Pankaj Udani, Member-MC, Executive Committee graced theinaugural function. Keynote addresswas delivered byMrV.B.Patel.

Welcoming the dignitaries and

participants, the Chairman GujaratState Center Mr. S.J.Desai informedabout the purpose of conducting theseminar. He stated that the seminarwas kept with a view to bringingawareness among all the participantsand sensitizing them about theimportance of the functions performedby the gates, namely storing behindthem water which is a scarce resourceand also controlling flood releases incase of dams and therefore safetyexamination as well as Operation andmaintenance aspects for gates arerequired to be carefully attended to.Speaking about the theme and purposeof the workshop, Mr. V. P.Kapadiastated that the seminar would run inthree technical sessions viz.

He further stated that the learnedspeakers are highly experienced in thisparticular field and therefore theseminar would be very much interestingand inspiring for the young as well asexperienced delegates.

Mr. V.B.Patel, Chief Guest of thefunction said that gates form vital partof any water retaining or waterconveying structure like dam, canal,flood embankments, drains etc. In caseof dams, as in case of water scarce areasof Saurashtra & Kachchh, most of thestorage is behind the gates. Therefore itis very much necessary to have thegates in proper condition so that nowater is lost due to malfunctioning ofgates during monsoon andthereafter.These dams provide water fordrinking purposes and therefore, anyloss of water is considered to be acriminal action. Further, during floodsthe gate operation becomes very muchcrucial as failure in appropriateoperation of gates would lead to loss oflife and properties. To prevent this fromhappening, detailed safety examinationand evaluation is extremelynecessary.Further, based on suchinspection, a plan needs to be workedout to rectify the deficiencies detectedbefore monsoon.

Unless this is done, the result would becatastrophic. Most of the dams havebeen aging and therefore appropriateupkeep of the same particularly thegates is very vital and therefore hestressed the need of following strictlythe maintenance & operation guidelines.He referred to painting of gates,removal or replacement of corrodedgate parts, oiling and greasing as perschedule, testing of gates under fullload condition etc.He stated that similartreatment needs to be given to thegates of other civil engineeringstructures which are also equallyimportant. He stated that fundingshould not be a constraint as safetycomes first. He cited several examplesof failures of dams and stated that oneought to learn from such failures so thatrecurrence of such incidents could beavoided. He therefore congratulated theGujarat State Center for coming outwith the idea of organising this one dayseminar at a very appropriate time. Hecongratulated the State Center and TheInstitution of Engineers (India) fororganizing such a wonderful thoughtprovoking seminar.

Mr Bharat Patel conducted theinaugural session very efficiently. A voteof thanks was proposed by HonSecretary Mr.C.V. Nadpara.

About 150 delegates from various Govt.Organizations/ Undertakings,Educational Institutions, andrepresentatives of industry participatedin the deliberations. Technical papers onthe sub themes were deliberated in therespective sessions.There was very active participation and


in-depth discussion during all thesessions and good recommendationsemerged.The OD Seminar wasorganized by The Institution ofEngineers (India), Gujarat State CenterUnder the aegis of MechanicalEngineering Division Board, inassociation with Water ResourcesDepartment, GoG,Gandhinagar.

Following recommendations came outduring the seminar which were summedup at the Valedictory function presidedover by the Chairman,Gujarat StateCenter who was accompanied on daisby MrV P Kapadia andMr C.V.Nadpara:

Guidelines for safety inspection ofgates should be adhered toreligiously year after year.

Based on the result of such aninspection deficiencies detectedmust be attended to on topmostpriority. Fund availability should notcome in the way of rectification ofsuch deficiencies.

Operation of gates at the time offloods needs to be done verycarefully so that there is no loss oflife and damage to the properties isminimized.

Guidance to new batch of AMIE Students & Commencement of Classes

New batch for winter examination ofAMIE Section A Non-Diploma studentswas welcomed on 10th July at theGujarat State Center by Mr.S.J.Desai,Chairman of GSC with a briefintroduction to the AMIE examination.The students were impressed upon tostudy sincerely so that they are throughthe examination successfully as thestandard set for these examinations isvery high making it extremely tough tocrack.And that is the reason why it israted highly outside India and also isconsidered equivalent to B Tech degreegiven by the IITs. He informed thestudents about the library facilitiesavailable with the Center and urgedthem to make full utilisation of thesame. He assured them that in casethey felt the need to have more numberof books in the library at a later date ifthe number of students increases, thesame would be done immediately.

The students welcomed the professorswith bouquet.

Mr. V.P.Kapadia who himself has beenan AMIE student from The Institutionof Engineers gave a detailed accountof course structure and theexamination.He introduced theprofessors and stated that they areexperts in their respective subjectsand therefore an all out effort shouldbe made by the students to learn asmuch from them as they can. Hefurther informed that as one subjectwill be taken up at a time daily forabout 2 hours, the method ofteaching would be by assignments.Self study is therefore encouragedand whatever difficulties are felt,should be brought before therespective professor.


Talk on role of engineers post retirement

Prof Suresh Mashruvala famous cricketcommentator & lecturer of AhmedabadManagement Association delivered athought provoking talk on role ofengineers post-retirement on 17th July2015. He began his talk by saying thatretirement is not end of job, but it isdoing something new in life breakingfrom the monotonous routine that wasfollowed over quite a long period oftime-- a welcome change, a newbeginning of life. He impressed upon theparticipants that they must stay relaxedputting aside all the worries in their livesand enjoy the new phase by remainingactive throughout. He stated that themind must be kept busy in some kind ofactivity with love-- there should not beany compulsion to carry out such activity/ activities.Citing an example of a very sincere seniorlevel mill officer who after having a veryactive service career expired soon afterhis retirement. This happened becausethe officer’s mind was not tuned toretirement. He therefore urged theparticipants to get engaged in activitiesof their choice well before retirement so

that such a tragic event may not occur.He named a few activities like playingmind games like cross word puzzles,solving Sudoku or puzzles,mathematical puzzles, listening tovarious kinds of music like vocal,instrumental, western or Hindustaniclassical or even folk songs/ bhajans/filmy music. One may even turn a goodmagician who can attract attentiontowards himself in a party or some suchevents where there is a familiargathering.He then placed several puzzles beforethe participants and asked them to findthe correct answer. He showed how theparticipants got themselves involved insolving the puzzles and in turn gotengaged in a fruitful mind game. Hethen showed a trick of magic afternarrating how he learnt the sameduring his trip to USA.The participants most of whom hadretired from service, enjoyed the oneand half hour’s talk cum demonstrationthoroughly.

Women Engineers’ Meet

First ever women engineer - centricprogram in the form of a talk on“Challenges faced by working womenengineers” was organised by GujaratState Center in collaboration withL.D.College of Engineering,Ahmedabad on 31stAugust.Guest speaker was Ms Mina Jagtapwho is associated with an NGO namedDastak. She very aptly touched uponthe subject in brief and askedparticipating women engineers tocome out with their issues. Severalissues were brought out and discussed;notable ones being difficulties faced bywomen engineers at workplace as theyare at times required to report early inthe morning and reaching home lateresulting in inappropriate care of theirkids in their formative years; nonavailability of proper toilet facilities at

Workplace and their cleanliness,maintaining work-life balance etc.Dr. G.P.Vadodaria, Principal, L.D.College of Engineering remainedpresent and encouraged theparticipants to discuss the issuesfreely with open mind. Dr. SwetabenDave, Immediate past Hon secretaryof IEI GSC & Convener of WomenEngineers’ Sub Committee organisedand conducted the entire programvery well.Earlier, welcoming the guest speakerand the participants, Chairman GSCIEI outlined the necessity of havingsuch separate programs for womenengineers and urged the participantsto come out with programs not onlyfor themselves but also for guidingnew entrants and also those about tojoin service for the first time.

Be the voice of female engineers

A number of barriers exist to the progression of larger numbers of women inengineering, and these can be represented by the analogy of hurdles in a running race.These exist at every career stage. We at IEI need to work hard to lower these hurdles,but they will only disappear altogether when we get sufficient numbers of 'runners' inthe race to knock them down. This is why the work that is done in the early careerstages is very important. We cannot address all of these barriers to progression, but wehave tried to identify a number of ways that can make a difference.

One Day workshop on WaterConservation was organised on 5th

December at Ahmedabad under the aegisof Agriculture Division Board and inassociation with Water ManagementForum of IEI and Water ResourcesDepartment of Gujarat. Hon Minister ofState for Water Resources Shri NanubhaiVanani was theChief Guest.

Welcoming the dignitaries andparticipants, the Chairman WaterManagement Forum Shri O.T.Gulatiinformed about the purpose ofestablishing WMF by the IEI. He statedthat with a view to bringing awarenessamong the users about the scarceresource and its conservancy & judicious

use, a national forum--WaterManagement Forum (WMF) wasestablished by IEI at Ahmedabad. TheWMF is actively organizing seminars onWater conservancy andmanagement.Speaking about the theme and purposeof the workshop, he stated that freshwater is not available in abundance onearth and in our country. On the otherhand due to increase in population anddevelopment activities taken up, thedemand of water keeps burgeoning. It istherefore very much imperative toconserve water for our future generation.He stated that the workshop is going tobe in four technical sessions viz.

He further informed that WMF hasalready taken up the initiative of writingto all the State and National schoolboards to introduce the subject of waterharvesting in school curriculum. Heinformed that WMF has also prepared ashort film on need for water conservationand prepared necessary literature formass awareness on saving water in ourdaily use, a book on traditional waterharvesting practices, a booklet foreducating school students, waterharvesting in urban and rural areas etc.

Shri Navin Vasoya FIE, Council membergave brief account of the activitiescarried out by The Institution ofEngineers (India). He stated that waterconservation was the need of the hourand needs to be practiced in all the partsof the country --irrespective of whetherthe same is falling in water scarce regionor not, as climate change can turn thecycle adversely in the areas which arecomfortable with water availability.

Shri Nanubhai Vanani, Hon Minister ofState for Water Resources said thatWater is the elixir of life. But it is notavailable in abundance on earth. On theother hand, water demand is increasingexponentially due to development goingon at a rapid space. Not onlyindustrialisation, but urbanisation is

putting lot of strain on our alreadystrained water resources. It has thereforebecome extremely necessary to conservewater.We can conserve water in rural andurban areas by following rechargingtechnique saving every drop of water thatfalls on earth. Our country has beenpracticing water conservation since ages.It is intended to revisit all these methodsand to explore the possibility of reviving

the old culture wherever found relevant.He stated that even necessarymodification could also be thought of ifrequired. He stated that city ofAhmedabad has the tradition ofharvesting rain water by collecting thesame in deep Tankas preparedunderground in every building. This waterwas used year round by the residents.Similarly, step wells called Vavs havebeen constructed on the outskirts of thecity to store rain water which was usedthroughout the year for drinkingpurposes. Rani Ki Vav, Adalaj ni vav aresome such examples. Similarly otherparts of the country have their owntraditions. Perhaps this is forgotten withadvent of the Raj, however, heemphasized to revive this art byintroducing the subject of waterharvesting in school curriculum.He further stated that current year has

Energy Conservation Day wascelebrated by Gujarat State Center on14th December 2014 at BhaikakaBahavan Ahmedabad.Theme speakerwas Mr. Uresh Mehta, Immediate pastChairman & retired Chief Engineer(Electrical) & Additional Secretary,Government of Gujarat.

Welcoming theTheme Speaker and theparticipants, Mr. S.J.Desai, Chairman,GSC informed that National energyconservation day is celebrated everyyear by the people all over the India on14th of December. The EnergyConservation Act in India was executedby the Bureau of Energy Efficiency(BEE) in the year 2001. The Bureau ofEnergy Efficiency is a constitutionalbody which comes under Governmentof India and helps in the developmentof policies and strategies in order to

reduce the energy use. He furtherstated that National energyconservation day is celebrated everyyear using particular theme of the yearby keeping in mind some goals andobjectives to make more effective allover the country among people. Someof the important goals are:

To send the message ofimportance of conserving energyin the every walk of life amongpeople.

To promote the way of process ofenergy conservation by organizinga lot of events such as discussions,conferences, debates, workshops,competitions and etc all throughthe country.

To promote people for less energyusage by neglecting the excessiveand wasteful uses.


To encourage people for efficientenergy use in order to decrease theenergy consumption and preventthe energy loss.

Each and every citizens of the Indiamust aware about how to use efficientenergy, how to save the energy for theirown future safety and many more ways.They should follow all the rules,regulations and policies implementedby the Government of India in order tosupport the energy efficiency. Citizensof India can pay their directcontribution to the campaign of reduceenergy use throughout the 11th FiveYear Plan period. Children are the bigexpectation and hope for the country tobring positive changes as well as toenhance the economic condition of thecountry. He then made a briefpresentation on how & why energy is tobe conserved.Key note speaker Mr Uresh Mehtaspeaking at the occasion appealed tothe participants to be be Energy Smartand said that Energy saved meansMoney saved. He explained this by hisown experiment at GovernmentSecretariat where the measures takenby him towards energy conservationresulted in huge saving of money to theState exchequer. He also made apresentation in this regards.

Interactive session on home/office automation using GSM &micro-controllers

An Interactive session on home/officeautomation using GSM &micro-controller was organised atGujarat State Center on 19th November2014.Theme Speaker was Er K.P.Kanzia,Research & Development Head,Automation Engineers, Ahmedabad.Shri Manish Doshi, Member, executiveCommittee of Gujarat State Centerwelcomed the Theme speaker Mr K.P.Kanzia, Past Chairman of the Center Mr.Bharatbhai Patel as well as theparticipants of the interactive sessionwho comprised mostly of finalsemester students of EC,IC, Electrical(Degree & Diploma) from engineeringcolleges.He outlined

the objective behind the session.Theme Speaker Mr. K.P.Kanziyapresented very useful informationand techniques on how to have homeand office automation carried out usingGSM & micro-controller. Hedemonstrated as to how to interfacemicro-controller with differentperipherals such as LED, Relay, Buzzer,DC motor, Stepper Motor, Push Button,Matrix Key pad, Parallel to SerialConvertor 8 bit shift register, LDR,Infrared source, Photodiode, UART(GSM, GPS, RFID, RF-Modem, Zig-bee,Fingerprint modem, Ultrasonic distancesensor, Temperature Humidity sensor,Color sensor).


National Mathematics day

Gujarat State Center celebrated NationalMathematics Day on 22nd December 2014to commemorate 127th birth centenary ofSrinivas Ramanuj, the ace Indianmathematician of international repute.Dr. Chandramauli Joshi, Chairman &founder of All India RamanujamMathematics Club, Rajkot was the themespeaker.Dr. Joshi paying tribute to the genius saidthat born on December 22, 1887 in TamilNadu's Erode district, Ramanujan madeextraordinary contribution in numbertheory, infinite series, mathematicalanalysis and making formulas andequations. The mathematical geniuscompiled more than 3,900 mathematicalresults and equations.His RamanujamPrime and Ramanujam theta discoverieshad also inspired further research on the

subject.

He along with a British MathematicianGodfrey Harold Hardy discovered thesmallest number represented as sum oftwo cubes 1729 which came to beknown as Hardy-Ramanujan number.Ramanujan was said to be a naturalgenius, in the same league asmathematicians such as Euler andGauss.

Speaking about the All indiaRamanujam Mathematics club, hestated that the Club having 2000schools as its members, is dedicated todevelop innovative ideas of interactiveteaching creating curiosity amongstudents about maths and to providenational level platform to students toshow their talent.

SECTION A (DIPLOMA STREAM)EXAMINATION

Senior Technician members enrolled withthe Institution are only eligible to applyfor appearance in the Institution

examination within the stipulated period.

The enrollment includes registration forexamination in SectionA (Diploma).

A candidate shall be required to pass in 4(four) subjects. A candidate may berequired to qualify in less number ofsubjects provided such a candidate, inconsideration of his academic credentials,is given exemption in one or moresubjects by the Institution.

SECTION B EXAMINATION

Technician/Senior Technician membersenrolled with the Institution who havepassed Section A of the InstitutionExamination or any other examinationrecognised by the Council as exemptingtherefrom OR Associates and corporatemembers, who have passed Sections A &B of Institution Examinations in onebranch of engineering or securedexemption therefrom for appearing inanother branch of engineering, are onlyeligible to apply for appearance in theInstitution examination within thestipulated period.

The Peter Principle:

In a hierarchy, individuals tend to rise to their levels of incompetence.

Explanation: In a system where competence constituted elegibility for promotionand incompetence constituted a bar to promotion, each individual would eventuallycome to rest at a level of incompetence.

Murphy’s Law:

Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong.

Explanation: If there are two or more ways to do something and one of those canresult into catastrophe, then someone will do it that way.

Parkinson’s Law:

Work expands to fill the time available for its completion.

Explanation: Committees of twenty (persons), deliberate plenty; Committees of ten,act now and then; but most of the jobs are done by Committees of one.An official wants to multiply subordinates, not rivals; and officials make work foreach other.

Corollary 1 : The cream rises until it sours.

The Nature of Communication

The concept of communication embraces a wide range of meaningscircling around the idea of sharing. That sharing or exchange is now morecommonly of abstract things, notably meaning.

For communication to happen there are some necessary elements orconditions: social contact, a common medium, transmission andunderstanding.

Some contact or connection is required. It may be physically close or(through technology) at a distance. If you are out of touch with peopleyou can’t communicate with them. But you may be out of touch becauseyou don’t communicate! Communication creates relationships;relationship produces communication.

Although we have evolved language as our principal medium forcommunicating with each other, we retain non-verbal communication;just as a sailing yatch might have an auxiliary motor. It is especiallyimportant as an expression of relationship. In Japan as in African tribalsociety, for example, how near or how far you sit from the door indicatesyour seniority.

Both a distinct and clear transmission of some kind is required and also anequal reception of it. Both sender and receiver contribute to the processby which meanings are exchanged between them by a common system ofsymbols.
