Dr L V Muralikrishna Reddy, President,The Institution of Engineers (India) wasfelicitated byGujarat State Center on 22nd
Jan 2015. Dr Reddy while thanking for thegesture, outlined his vision of growth forthe Institution. He stated that the WorldEconomic Forum’s GlobalCompetitiveness Index notes that India isin the top tier with respect to availabilityof engineers and scientists. While theworld recognises and honors individualcontributions of Indian engineers to thedevelopment of the economy andinclusive growth, “Indian Engineering”
has not got the recognition it deserves. The need of the hour is to transform theway Indian engineers are looked at. Hebelieved that IEI is the right platform toaddress this and it would be his endeavorto transform the way Indian Engineeringis looked at and help it get the reognitionit deserves. In that context, he outlinedfollowing measures to herald themakeover of Indian engineering throughIEI:(1) To build a healthy synergy betweenthe Governments and the IEI across thelife cycle encompassing program

Seminar on Surge Control in pipeline system for conveyance ofwater
Pipelines for conveyance of drinkingwater supply as well as for irrigationhave to lift water to greater heightsresulting in surge formation due towater hammer. This damages thewhole system and in the longer runaffects the functioning of the systemadversely. Therefore surge control is avery important aspect which needs tobe taken into consideration.Prof Srinivasa LingiReddy of KentukiUniversity, USA made a thoughtprovoking presentation on this subjecton 22nd January 2015 at Gujarat StateCenter which was attended byengineers and consultants engaged inthe business of designing and laying of
pipeline system and large number ofengineering college students who tooklive interest.

The Beautiful Beast: Evidence based Life extension ofcentury-old Pamban Bridge
A presentation on life extension ofworld renown century-old railwaybridge at Pumban, near Rameswaram,Tamilnadu was done by Dr. KunalKansara on 30th January 2015 at Gujaratstate Center. Dr. Kansara is a memberof IEI currently based in UK.Pumban bridge connectingRameswaram to the Indian mainland isa heritage structure that completed 100years in the year 2014. During its lifespan it suffered sever damage due todevastating cyclone in 1964. The bridgewas restored by Er. E. Sreedharan, FIEwho is now well known for hismeticulous execution of KonkanRailway and Delhi Metro projects. Of
the 146 spans in the bridge, 124 hadbeen damaged or washed away. Metregauge girders were needed urgentlywhich were sourced from Assam andRajasthan, & the rest which were lying40 feet below, on the seabed werebrought by fishermen. Engineersworked at breakneck speed tocomplete the restoration. It used totake three days to launch one girder.Soon they were launching a girder aday. On the last two days, theylaunched eight girders. And the resultswere there for all to see. The projectwas estimated to be completed in sixmonths, got accomplished it in 46 days.

Be the voice of female engineers
A number of barriers exist to the progression of larger numbers of women in engineering, and these can be represented by the analogy of hurdles in a running race. These exist atevery career stage.
We at IEI need to work hard to lower these hurdles, but they will only disappearaltogether when we get sufficient numbers of 'runners' in the race to knock them down. This is why the work that is done in the early career stages is very important. We cannotaddress all of these barriers to progression, but we have tried to identify a number ofways that can make a difference.
Tomotivate girls to consider careers in engineering To organize annual two day student conference called Engineering Inspiration To promote engineering role models To discuss difficulties being faced at workplace and possible solutions To upgrade knowledge continuously through seminars/ workshops/ talks etc To scout opportunities in private sector To arrange for personality development lectures

Some Facts About Communication
Communication only happens if you get in touch with people and remainin contact with them. Social distance, as cultivated by some managers, iscounterproductive. Live and work among people as their leader, nottheir remote boss. He or she who communicates, leads.
Don’t confine communication behind organizational fences.Communication with customers or prospective customers, suppliers andsupporters and the public at large, is vital for the health of your business.Have you ever as a customer been on the wrong end of badcommunication? Then you know how much it matters.
You will not get far in most careers-- even ones you create and manageyourself -- without being called upon or speak in public or make apresentation. Nerves are natural, and you can learn how to control them. The content of what you say is obviously important but how you say it -your presentation skills-- can be almost equally important, especially insome contexts.
The first step towards becoming a manager of communication-- one whohelps others to communicate effectively with each other to somecommon end -- is usually when you are given the role of discussion leaderor chairman. Only one in ten managers, some research indicates, is anexcellent chairman of meetings. Are you in that happy minority amongyour peers?
Organizations have a nervous system of communication which carriesinformation, ideas and inspiration in varying degrees of effectiveness. Itis vital to establish good system of communication and train all yourleader-managers-- key terminals in the system -- in communication skills.
Giving and receiving constructive praise and criticism is never going to beeasy, given the realities of human nature. But you will never be aneffective leader until you can do it.
