Bokeh

It comes from Japanese and means ‘out-of-focus’. But Bokeh is much more than just blurring part of the image. It also means that quality provided by some very bright lenses where the colors are softened and lights become ethereal. Playing with this depth of field is ideal for portraits to pick out the person against the background. If we have light sources in the foreground or background, we can get them to blur to create flashes of light which give our image an artistic touch.

An interesting effect.

José Antolín Toledano Ernesto Antolín Arribas María Helena Antolín Raybaud Emma Antolín Granet José Antolín Granet

The company has its origins in a small garage in Burgos run by Avelino Antolín and where his two sons José and Avelino started working with the effort and passion that have led to what is now known as Grupo Antolin. It is a leading multinational automotive interior components company which today has become a benchmark in the industry thanks to the dedication and effort of each and every one of its employees, whose energy and passion mean that this Group is really just one big family.

Emma Antolín, Corporate Social Responsibility Director at the holding company, picked up the prize. During her speech, Emma said that Grupo Antolin’s growth has not reduced by one iota its roots in the capital of Burgos province where its headquarters is located, in spite of the purchase of the Canadian company Magna Interiors which has led to the inclusion and integration of another 12,000 employees.

Grupo Antolin has been able to safely weather the difficulties of generational handover because it has long been committed to professionalizing the company’s management in addition to signing family protocols and continuing with good corporate governance guidelines.

The judging panel was chaired by the Director General for Industry in the Castilla y León Government, Carlos Martín, David Esteban (Cecale), Víctor García (Regional Council of Chambers of Commerce), José Luis Zurro (Garrigues), José Ángel Hermina (University of Leon), Rafael Barbero (Caja de Burgos Foundation), Alberto Cagigas (Castilla y León Económica), and also Lucía Urbán, a member of the family which owns Grupo Siro, the previous winners of the award.

Alfonso Jiménez, President of the Castilla y León Family Business Association, began the ceremony by expressing his admiration for the winners. “You are doing things so well that our companies want to copy and be like you, as you too used to be a small company before turning into a multinational.” He also said

that these companies are part of the solution to the problem of unemployment in Spain, adding that Castilla y León can become, if it is not already, a leading region in industries such as automobiles and agribusiness.

Regional Minister of Economy and Finance, Pilar del Olmo, highlighted the importance of family businesses in Castilla y León because they account for over 90% of existing enterprises and more than 70% of employment in the region. ▪

“It is a pleasure to receive this award because of what it means in terms of support for a business project that began 50 years ago and also because it comes from an association that backs the individual and personal nature of family businesses.”

The Antolín family, founder and owner of the multinational Grupo Antolin since its inception in the 1950s, has been honored with the 14th Castilla y León Family Business Award presented each year by the Castilla y León Family Business Association (EFCL). The judging panel unanimously agreed to bestow this award which was presented last December 10 at a ceremony held in the Valladolid Science Museum auditorium.

"AN AMBITIOUS PROJECT THAT’S PACKED WITH OPPORTUNITIES"As part of the integration process of the new Cockpits & Consoles BU, Grupo Antolin has reworked its organization in order to speed up synergies for the entire company

The overall structure of the company is still based on three main areas, business units, territories, and corporate func-tions, which need to work together to ensure the consistency

BUSINESS UNITS TERRITORIES

of the overall strategy. To this end functions have been rede-fined to give each one different responsibilities:

- The Business Units are responsible for the standardization of indus-trial products and processes in addition to technical and industrial aspects in Europe.

- The territories work continuously with the Business Units as well as providing a local vision.

- The corporate departments offer global services to the business units and the territories. ▪

COCKPITS & CONSOLES BUThe most significant change in the new organization is the modification of the Cockpits & Interior Trim unit which has been renamed Cockpits & Consoles and will have as its new director MIGUEL ÁNGEL PRADO who will also join the steering committee.

This unit will be responsible for the procurement, development, and manufacture of these products. That means it will be a unit much more focused on the cockpits and consoles business in order to concentrate knowledge and enhance its growth while enabling the company to have a more robust pitch for customers.

DOORS & HARD TRIM BUThe doors business will be Doors & Hard Trim and it will manage the factories making these products. It will report to BU director PEDRO SANTESTEBAN. To enable product and process to be

implemented across the board, the engineering area is split into two: Projects and products on the one hand and process engineering, costs, advanced engineering, and tooling on the other.

OVERHEADS & SOFT TRIM BUThe Overheads unit has been renamed Overheads & Soft Trim and provides four factories in Europe. This unit is responsible for the overheads business and includes trunks and carpets. In addition two areas of engineering have been separated: Overheads engineering and sunvisors engineering. Both continue to report to BU director FERNANDO SANZ.

SEATS & METAL BUThe Seats BU has been renamed Seats and Metal and takes over managing the new PGA and Valença factories. MIGUEL MARAÑÓN is the director.

LIGHTING BUThe Lighting business pays special attention to Innovation, bringing the technologies of the future to the new programs, maintaining strong development competences, mainly in electronics and optic design. PETER MURPHY is the director.

CORPORATE DEPARTMENTS reporting to the CEO

How is the new Cockpits & Consoles BU structured? What are its components?

The new BU’s headquarters will be in Allershausen, Munich, in the new offic-es which will house Engineering, Indus-trial, Quality, and Commercial aspects. It will also have new technical centers in the NAFTA region and the UK as well as three new plants in Europe, two in the US and finally four in Asia Pacific to achieve one of the main objectives set by the company.

It has three components: Cockpit mod-ules, instrument panels and central con-soles. First is the Cockpit module which usually integrates the instrument panel, IP central console and several control functions as well as wiring harness, in-strument cluster... Then there is the in-strument panel which is a key part of the cockpit and acts as a safety device for the vehicle’s occupants. It is a complex system because it integrates various materials such as trims, foams and com-posites. Finally there is the central con-sole, a flexible storing space between the front seats that provides functions useful for the end users.

What launches/milestones would you highlight in 2016?

The highlight for this year 2016 is the 27 programs the company is developing with their respective launches. One of them is the opening of a new technical center in the Czech Republic for Skoda which will bring together technical, com-mercial, and corporate functions. I would also pick out another new launch in the US for General Motors and the opening of a new plant in Tianjin (China).

It is very important to discuss the inte-gration process that the Group is carrying out. Obviously this BU’s biggest challenge is the development of this process. I think it’s on the right track because it contains in-depth training for its employees, a roll-out of GA systems and procedures, and an identification of the various synergies with other business units and other plants.

How have customers reacted to Grupo Antolin entering the IP market?

The company’s entry into this new mar-ket has proved very popular with our existing customers who we are already working with these components and

also with regular Grupo Antolin custom-ers who we are not yet supplying with the new products.

Finally, you’ve lived in Germany; what are the main differences when it comes to working in both countries?

Firstly, I would like to thank all my new colleagues for their fantastic welcome. I have felt very much at home right from the start and very happy to start a new pe-riod in a country like Germany which sets the standard in the automotive market.

In my view there are no major differences between Spain and Germany as the auto-motive world in Europe is marked by the specific demands of German customers. As a result work habits are very similar in both cases: A lot of effort and hard work focused mainly on meeting customer needs. It is crucial to combine rigor, per-severance, and creativity and I honestly think we bring all three qualities.

At present it is essential that we know and understand the product and our col-leagues trust a project that’s ambitious and packed with opportunities.. ▪

Germany is the European leader in terms of production and sales which means it provides an extensive market of opportunities. It is the leading vehicle manufacturer in Europe and the fourth world-wide. It accounts for over 30% of all passenger cars manufactured and nearly 20% of all new registrations.

The importance of the automotive sector in the German economy is such that it employs one in seven Germans and its impact on GDP is about 2.7%. No other European country can boast a com-parable concentration of research, development, design, procure-ment, manufacture, and assembly facilities.

International providers are increasingly attracted by the country as a business location and it continues to be the most attractive in terms of foreign investment in Europe and the fourth in the world behind China, the USA, and Russia.

Grupo Antolin’s relationship with Germany goes back some way as it is one of the leading automobile producers and has leading brands set up in the country. The Group has been operating in Ger-many since 1992. It was then that the company made the leap to internationalization and opened commercial representation offic-es in the major European decision-making centers.

Germany has always been a key market since it is the leading man-ufacturer in Europe, but following the acquisition of Magna Interi-ors it is now even more important as there is a major growth proj-ect. The acquisition of Magna Interiors significantly strengthens our position to the point that turnover in Germany has reached €682 million, which accounts for more than 16% of sales.

Grupo Antolin announced the creation of a facility that would house the new Cockpits and Consoles BU in Allershausen, near Munich. This is one of Grupo Antolin’s major sites and will coordi-nate all the industrial activity of the new BU. The center will also host R&D and commercial representation operations.

"The acquisition of Magna’s interior division makes us a stronger company and to achieve our targets we need to work as single team,” said María Helena Antolín in her speech at the meeting with employees at Grupo Antolin headquarters in Auburn Hills.

THE NEW ORGANIZATION HAS INTEGRATED SOFT TRIM OPERA-TIONS FROM MAGNA INTERIORS (ESSENTIALLY CARPETS, FLOORS, AND TRUNK PARTS) IN THE OVERHEADS BU WHICH HAS BEEN RE-NAMED THE OVERHEADS & SOFT TRIM BUSINESS UNIT.

To promote the exchange of knowledge, last Monday, January 18, the Business Unit held its latest Monthly Committee (at which the results and actions from the various areas were reviewed) in Ebergas-sing (Austria), where several Soft Trim products are manufactured and many of the projects in these technologies are managed. ▪

The company’s Vice Chairman took the opportunity to tell new employees about the company’s history and the most significant challenges they will face in the future.

Grupo Antolin North-America President Pablo Baroja also provided an overview of what took place in 2015 and en-couraged employees to continue working to achieve the

goals set by the company: "We operate in a highly com-petitive industry and we need everyone’s effort and com-mitment."

The event also doubled up as the unofficial opening of the extension of Grupo Antolin’s head office in the United States, where the company has opted for a very function-al and modern model that encourages collaboration be-tween departments. ▪

Both Jesús Pascual and Javier Villacampa emphasized the

new products and processes.

addressed in the “Art-team” workshop

They are part of a plan to promote Innovation across Grupo An-tolin and will be continued in 2016 in the Group’s main facilities around the world, this time with the direct involvement of our new colleagues from Magna Interiors.

The events in Burgos kicked off on December 21 with a meeting of all Corporate Innovation Department staff in Burgos. Over fifty people gathered for the Team Building Day run with the support of the Human Resources Department with the aim of develop-ing essential aspects in emotional skills and improving internal communication, openness to change, and ultimately the depart-ment’s ability to work as a team. Fun and learning went hand-in-hand at the event.

At the end, Director of Corporate Innovation Javier Villacampa em-phasized the need to extend this innovation teamwork to the rest of the company as the best way to meet its challenges in this field.

On the 22rd the event was divided into three parts: The first was at-tended by the Innovation team where Javier Villacampa stressed in his presentation the value and leadership of the function and set out the Innovation strategies, challenges and objectives which are to guide work over the next few years.

In the second part each Corporate Innovation Department area manager presented to the other teams the results achieved in 2015 and the main courses of action and projects for 2016.

To round off the day a special session was held by inviting all the colleagues at Grupo Antolin headquarters in Burgos who the in-novation team works with every day. Javier Villacampa gave a summary presentation of the team’s role, strategies, and objec-tives in the shape of projects validated by the Business Units for the coming years.

Subsequently some of the main innovation projects which are to be put in place in 2016 in partnership with Advanced Engineering in the Business Units were presented by the leader of each project, who then took questions from the audience.

Finally, Jesús Pascual, Chief Executive Officer of Grupo Antolin, closed the event by underscoring the renewed efforts the com-pany had made in Innovation at Grupo Antolin, including a sig-nificant increase in financial and human resources. Both Jesús Pascual and Javier Villacampa emphasized the need to promote innovation across the company and the role of Corporate Inno-vation in sponsoring it from the idea to its materialization in new products and processes, engaging all the company’s departments in this task and ensuring efficient use of company resources.

New challenges have been added for 2016 such as the integration of new products/processes, and consolidating the Innovation and Advanced Engineering Teams in Munich, Ebergassing, Steyr and GA-North America and thus the creation of a global innovation network in Grupo Antolin. ▪

LED, ELECTRONIC LIGHTA Light Emitting Diode is a two-terminal electronic component that enables the flow of electric current. It is a revolutionary development that generates light at a lower cost and for longer than traditional infrared radiation lighting.

Responsibility for environmental sustainability is one of the core principles in Grupo Antolin’s corporate policy. The company is committed to encouraging all efforts to promote greater environmental responsibility by developing processes and technologies that safeguard the environment.

GREEN PROGRAMGrupo Antolin’s headquarters cuts its energy use by 10% through LED lighting

In 2014 Grupo Antolin’s management launched the “Grupo Antolin Green Program 2014-1016”, a strategy to minimize the environmental impact in terms of energy use and non-hazardous waste generation of products and processes in GA companies worldwide. One of these measures, carried out by the General Services Department, has been modernization of the building’s lighting system which will enable 10% savings in total energy use.

This project has cut lighting use in the main building by 42% by replacing 2,300 panels with four 18W fluorescent tubes by 31W LED panels, 350 watertight panels with two 58W fluorescent tubes by 40W LED panels, and 22 400W metal halide panels by 187W LED projectors.

The company has chosen LED lighting technology which enables significant savings. Roughly speaking a LED tube uses half the power of a fluorescent tube to emit the same light. Plus it is also safer than the traditional system since it is cleaner because it contains no mercury or tungsten and reduces CO2 emissions by 80%.

The figures in Grupo Antolin’s Environmental Sustainability balance sheet showed that electricity use in 2014/2015 stood at 225.80 GWh. This balance sheet sets out the company’s environmental performance by analyzing its environmental, social, and financial dimensions to identify areas for improvement. It assesses the quality of the sustainability strategy to which the company is committed. ▪

NEWS IN BRIEF

AS IN PREVIOUS YEARS, THE DETROIT MO-TOR SHOW IS AN EVENT CHOSEN TO PRESENT VEHICLES WHICH AFTER MONTHS OR EVEN YEARS OF DEVELOPMENT ARE READY TO MAKE THEIR DEBUTS ON THE MARKET.

Undoubtedly one of the most important and widely an-ticipated production cars has been the new tenth-gen-eration Mercedes-Benz E-class 2016. There were also a large number of concepts that will shape and influence the design and features of the cars that we will be able to drive in the near future.

Volvo S90 Grupo Antolin supplies the instrument panel, sunvisors and pillars (China).

Mercedes E-class 2016, central console and instrument panel

The new Mercedes-Benz E-class 2016 has a very sim-ilar appearance to the brand’s flagship. Its interior is in-spired by the S-class, imitating its center console and dashboard. Plus the lighting technology it features varies with conditions. Its lights are dimmed to 80% brightness in total darkness and 60% when the car is stopped.

The three-pointed star brand appeared in Detroit packed with new developments. In addition to the new luxury sedan, Mercedes showed its new Mercedes S 65 AMG Cabriolet, the brand’s most powerful con-vertible, and the new Mercedes SLC, a restyling of the current SLK model.

The Mercedes S 65 AMG Cabriolet has a truly luxuri-ous interior: Sports seats upholstered in nappa leath-er (also on the A pillars and sunvisors) and a microfi-ber-lined fabric top.

Another of the great innovations at Detroit 2016 was the new Volvo S90, a model that has a minimalist in-terior inspired by the Volvo XC90. For the first time the control panel is completely digital, something which now seems crucial in new premium vehicles following its launch just over a year ago in the new Audi TT.

In contrast to this model, the dashboard of the Volvo S90 is slenderer with air intakes placed vertically next to the huge touch screen that works like a tablet to handle the car’s functions.

Another of the stars at Detroit was the new BMW M2 Coupé. The inside of this BMW model is a purely rac-ing environment and the only color scheme available is black leather with blue stitching. Alcantara upholstery and carbon fiber inserts featured in an interior that stands out for its breathtaking sport seats.

plications on different parts of the vehicles and identify how the needs of carmakers must mesh with the work of suppliers to keep pace with consumer and marketplace trends.

The Message of Grupo Antolin in 2016 Plastics Automotive Confer-ence in Detroit was centered on identifying the most significant megatrends that Grupo Antolin see moving forward: Achieving critical mass (products, locations, and “in-dustrial flexibility”, Strengthening Knowledge and Continuing a com-mitment to Innovation.

“It was a showcase to start to get the Antolin name in front of a lot of people and show that the Company is capable to provide full interior solutions and innovation to meet OEM customer future needs”

Chrysler surprised everyone at the Show by present-ing its unannounced Pacifica. It is a similar model to the Mercedes R-Class, with three rows of seats. This new vehicle replaces the Town & Country, a large sev-en-seater MPV featuring multiple screens and Stow & Go seats.

Ford introduced the new Mondeo 2017. The bulk of the changes are in its front where it premieres a grille with full-LED headlights and air inlets. The American manufacturer also showed the Ford F-150 Raptor SuperCrew 2017 featuring aggressive lines and robust fenders with very distinct shapes and a striking front grille. The interior is almost identical to the rest of the Raptor range, but rear seat passengers gain additional legroom and will find getting in and out easier due to larger rear doors.

The Lincoln Continental Concept was also presented, a real profusion of luxury. The interior of this model stands out for new seats fitted with heating and cooling to re-duce fatigue during long journeys and they also have a rolling massage function.

Japanese high-end brands took center stage with two high-flying coupés: The Infiniti Q60, the coupé version of the Q50, and the Lexus LC.

The Infinity Q60 has a bespoke interior finished with handmade leather and carbon fiber. It contains compo-nents adopted from the Infiniti Q80 Inspiration concept car, such as its low roofline and padded leather seats. In the interior the designers have used carbon fiber in door components to add to the sporty appearance. The steering wheel is leather-wrapped and stitched by hand and in this new model there is more legroom for pas-sengers in the rear seats.

The Lexus LC 500 will only be available in the hybrid version in Spain and most European countries. It will become the brand’s first four-seater sports hybrid featuring great luxury inside. Further details about this sports car are its carbon fiber roof and doors as well as the aluminum door trim, a material also used in the trunk.

Audi A4 Allroad The interior is similar to the rest of the Audi A4 range. It has a screen size up to 8.3 inches. In terms of features, there is the new voice control system, which can recognize input commands so you can call someone for example. The options list also includes the information system projected on the windshield 'head-up display'.

The 'Audi connect' system offers online services such as roadside assistance, provides status reports via smartphone and has applications for streaming music playback, among others.

Audi also offers LED lights with dynamic turn signals in taillights and Matrix headlights with dynamic turn signals.

GMC Acadia The interior of the GMC Acadia is one of its main features as it can accommodate five, six or seven passengers depending on the number of rows of seats and the type of them requested.

Inside there is a more refined look. It includes updating the board, center console and panels that provide the option to connect smartphones via Apple Car Play and Android Auto as well as the On Star system unique to General Motors group vehicles.

Acura ConceptAcura’s goal is a more striking concept: 'Precision crafted performance' and slimmer headlights which deliver greater clarity. In addition it features a fair amount of contour in the sliver of rear light visible and a total absence of door handles and hollows in the panel.

The design of the interior of the new Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback will be available with two trim levels: LT and Premier. The RS package will add a sportier look with a unique image thanks to new fenders, wheels, and oth-er details. Its entertainment system will be compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and also has com-ponents such as lane keep assist and parking assist. The brand claims that it offers as many features as its rivals but with more interior space, especially legroom.

Infiniti Q60 Acura

Japan’s Nissan opted for something much more popular at this year’s Detroit show. A concept which is a variant of its enormous Nissan Titan called the Nissan Titan Warrior Concept. The interior of this model is luxurious and robust. The Titan is a vehicle designed for weekend adventurers so the interior has to be comfortable and convenient. There are containers for hot and cold drinks in its center console. ▪

The history of industrialization ranges from the invention of the steam engine and the mechanization of manual labor through Henry Ford’s mass production to the latest wave of electronic systems and information technology. GLOBALIZATION.

Digitize to gain competitiveness

Industry in Spain now accounts for 13% of value added and provides jobs for 11% of the working population. In this situation, new tech-nological developments, hyperconnectivity, and globalization of the economy are presenting new opportunities and challenges.

This means we need to address new trends in order to evolve and become a strong, competitive, world-class sector: Industry 4.0.

Industry 4.0, also called the Fourth Industrial Revolution, seeks to develop new technologies to work more efficiently. It involves virtual simulation of product manufacture, preventing and repairing faults remotely, and flexibilizing production with leading to rocketing operating costs.

In Spain the Ministry of Industry has launched the Connected Industry program in partnership with Banco Santander, In-dra, and Telefónica. The aim is to encourage the digitization of Spanish industry.

This area includes issues such as big data (systems handling large data sets), smart robotics, cloud computing, and Inter-net of Things, a theory developed by Kevin Ashton which sets out a world in which all everyday objects are connected to the Internet.

The automotive and aviation sectors are the most advanced in digitization. An example in the case of the automotive industry is the Seat factory in Martorell, Barcelona, where models such as the Audi Q3 and the Seat León are produced much more ef-ficiently by using software that regulates energy, water, pres-sure, and steam flows by tailoring them to product needs.

Industry 4.0 will help reduce transportation and storage costs as well as facilitating access by drawing closer to the produc-tion plant. This closeness will provide greater flexibility in case of possible spikes in demand without risk of stockout or, con-versely, building up large quantities of product in a warehouse.

The potential of the digital transformation of production com-panies is immense. Industry 4.0 will drive digital transforma-tion and be a qualitative leap in the organization and manage-ment of company value chains.

Industry 4.0 refers to industry’s ability to build cutting-edge in-novations into their products and processes, in particular the development of electronics, information and communications technologies which have a bigger footprint in other sectors such as services. That means industry becomes more connect-ed, more tailored, flexible, and ultimately smarter.

Given the contemporary significance of this technological in-dustrialization plan, Grupo Antolin has decided to join in and take part in national conventions and talks to share its views on the impact of Industry 4.0 on the current situation in Spain and the company. ▪

The fourth Industrial Revolution, or Industry 4.0, is an initiative created with the aim of generating a new industrial era by finding solutions which enhance the competitiveness of enterprises.

Industry 4.0 is the result of building information technology into production processes. In countries such as Spain it could make a significant contribution to enhancing competitiveness.

The term ‘Industry 4.0’ was coined by the German government to describe a vision of computerized manufacturing in which all processes are interconnected.
