Groups
• A “group” is defined as two or more individuals:
• Interacting and interdependent
• Who may or may not have come together to achieve a particular objective / goal
• May work simultaneously or independently of one another
• Can be either formal or informal

Group Structure
• Conformity
• Adjusting one’s behaviors to the norm of the group
• May feel stress/pressure to conform to group’s attitudes / behaviors
• Status
• A hierarchy is established based on an individual’s personality, strength of character and abilities
• Performance Norms
• Provides the individual with specific details regarding: how they they should work, how they should accomplish their tasks, etc.

Group Structure (cont’d) • Cohesiveness
• The degree to which members are invested in the group and motivated to perform
• Extremely important because it is related to the group’s productivity and overall performance
• Decision Making
• Large groups facilitate the sharing of information
• Small groups are better suited to coordinate and facilitate the implementation of the end-goal
