Conjunctions … connect WORDS, PHRASES, and CLAUSES!

Different kinds of conjunctions join things in different ways:

Coordinate Conjunctions:FANBOYS (join clauses of equivalent value)

Correlative Conjunctions:Come in pairs, and are separated by the words they bring together

Subordinate Conjunctions: Make a clause dependent on another clause

Conjunctive AdverbsHave TWO major roles:

1)Link independent clauses2) Act as “transitional expressions”

Come in pairs, and are separated by the words they bring together.

Subordinate Conjunctions

Attach themselves to the beginning of clauses that could stand alone and, by doing so, make that clause dependent on another clause.

Ex: Even though she is a republican she voted for Obama.

Frequently used subordinate conjunctions: -after -before -even though -if-once -rather than -since -though-until -when -whether -while

Conjunctive AdverbsAccordingly, also, besides, earlier, finally, first, hence,

however, instead, later, likewise, otherwise, still, then, thus…

Link independent clauses that COULD easily stand alone. And

They act as bits of commentary in between clauses!

Proper:Sally murdered her husband with a spoon; Consequently,

she was sentenced to prison for life. Improper:

The school was on fire otherwise the mall was closed.

Conjunctions help smooth prose, link ideas, and telegraph contradictions.

Example:With Conjunctions:

I was walking down the street and there was a bird laying on the sidewalk with his eyes open. So, I walked towards it and nudged it with my foot. It moved! However, it was dead. Finally, I walked away.

Without conjunctions: I was walking down the street. There was a bird laying on

the sidewalk with his eyes open. I walked towards it. I nudged it with my foot. It moved! It was dead. I walked away.

Sins of omission – pasting choppy pieces together without any artful seaming. Watch for too many

semicolons in place of ands and fors.

Example of too many simple sentences in a row:

“See the toys,” said Sally.

“Horses and cows and pigs! And a funny red duck!

I want that funny red duck.”

Example too many buts, yets, and howevers:“I want that funny red duck, but not if it comes at too high a price.

However, if Mom and Dad would pay for it, I might change my mind. Yet, if Mom and Dad are willing to pay, do you think they might spring for a funny red truck, however different it is from

the duck?”

Cardinal Sins

Page 9: Group 5: Daniel Brandon A. Will Jessica. Conjunctions … connect WORDS, PHRASES, and CLAUSES! Different kinds of conjunctions join things in different.

Start a sentence with a conjunction!

Ex. “And God said, Let there be light; and there was light”

Conjunction can greatly alter the tone of prose (but make sure to keep in command of your tone)

You can have fun with conjunctions. For example:“Winston tastes good like a cigarette should.” A

preposition (like) is not a conjunction, but the sentence works!
