Ground fault location inAC & DC systems made easy
with BENDER EDS and RCMS systems
Secure Power
avoiding unwanted interruptions to operation
The increasing complexity of electrical installations places extreme-
ly high demands on the reliability of power supply systems. Even a
short power failure may be expensive due to production stoppage
and malfunction.
One decisive factor for the availability and operating safety of
electrical installations is the insulation resistance. Early detection,
fast localisation and elimination of insulation faults is the most
effective protection against interruption to operation and malfunc-
tion.
In distributed grounded & ungrounded systems, insulation fault location
is costly in terms of money and time. BENDER on-line insulation fault
and residual current location systems provide an innovative and
automatic solution to these problems. These comprehensive
solutions offer the user the benefits of increased system security
and safety, plus they provide significant reduction in time and cost.
• Time and cost reduction
- Automatic insulation fault or residual current location
during operation.
- Time saving thanks to exact location of the insulation fault.
- Effective support for preventive maintenance.
- No interruption to operation.
• Flexible in use
- Modular system for individual adaptation to the installati-
on.
- Flexible retrofitting and extension possibilities.
- Monitoring of up to 360 branches.
• Universal application
- EDS system for all AC/DC IT systems.
- RCMS system for all AC TN and TT systems.
- Portable location systems for small power systems and in
sub circuits.
- The EDS devices comply with IEC/EN61557-9 (draft).
Keeping everything under control - with PRC470
Provides a central control and display of the entire installation. All
monitoring parameters and important operating states are dis-
played in a text window, providing a complete overview of the
entire installation. The com-
munication between evalua-
tors and the central con-
trol/indicating device is via
a time and cost saving two-
wire
interface, which may be
easily extended.

An increasing number of sub circuits in an installation involves an increa-sing number of faults.
EDS470/EDS473 Ground fault location in ungrounded systems
When an insulation fault occurs in an ungrounded system, it will be
detected and indicated by the insulation monitoring device.
The ground fault location can be activated by the alarm contact
of the insulation monitor or manually. The test device PGH generates a
test signal for a defined period of time. Its amplitude and duration
are limited. This test signal flows via the location of the insulation fault
and through all measuring current transformers within the insula-
tion fault path. The EDS system scans all measuring current trans-
formers. The test signal is detected by the current transformers and
evaluated by the electronics of the EDS470-12/ EDS473-12. The
EDS with its LEDs and the PRC central controller, both provide fault
location path information.
The RCMS system operates on the principle of residual current
measurement. All conductors of the circuit to be monitored (except
the GND) are led through a current transformer. In a fault-free system
the resulting sum of all currents is equal to zero so that no voltage
is induced in the secondary winding of the measuring current
transformer. In the event of a fault current, the imbalance of the
current is sensed by the measuring current transformer and eva-
luated by the electronic circuitry.
A maximum of 12 measuring current transformers can be connec-
ted to one RCMS470-12 evaluator, i.e. 12 circuits can be monito-
red by one RCMS470-12. The RCMS470-12 scans all measuring
current transformers and indicates the faulty circuit via LED. All
RCMS units in a system work in parallel to minimise system evaluation.
The combination of an RCMS and PRC provides a central control
and display of the measuring results and a pre/main alarm war-
ning set up (10 mA-10 A), for each circuit. The use of current
transformers allows the RCMS system to be independent of both
the load current and the nominal voltage of the installation.
