80 81Angela Kumpe, winner of the 2010 Groom & Kennel Expo People’s Choice Award, with “Cherokee Heritage”

Rescue Remedy and a chicken sand-wich, we were back. Josh was regain-ing his strength, but we had sat out of the competition and lost valuable time. I wasn’t sure if I could complete him with the time I had left. Kathy Rose announced “scissors down” just as I added a couple feathers for a head-piece. After all that coat growth, I just didn’t have time to finish what I had planned. We still managed to get third place and the coveted People’s Choice Award. Lori again got first place, and the “Lion King” managed to remain undefeated.

I decided to go ahead and take the design to one more show: Atlanta Pet Fair. I just had to complete this design that I had worked so hard to perfect. Just a couple weeks before Atlanta, my mother passed away; I was devastated. I had no intentions of going anywhere, especially so soon after her death. My mother was my soul, my greatest fan, my seamstress, and my inspiration.

In the days before Atlanta, my entire family pushed me to go on and do what my mom would have wanted me to do. “She would want you to go, Angela!” is what my dad was telling me. I agreed to go but wasn’t sure if I would compete. I just wasn’t up to it. The night before we left, I told my dad, “I will work on my dog, and if I can do it, I will. For my mom!”

It was time to get the dogs ready, and I am sure everyone thought I had lost my mind. I just kept talking to my mom while I was working on Josh, just like she was standing there. When I was done, I was so excited. It was beautiful, and win or lose, I was happy. I pulled it together and completed the design; my mom would have been so proud. We won first place and People’s Choice.

Your ability to do your job, and do it right, separates you from be-ing “just a bather” to a position that contributes to the nished product in the salon. Teri believes that a good bath, brush and dry is 50% of a great groom. e bathing room is where most stylists started. Before future groomers begin to think of clipping coat, they must rst know what to expect from the hair, and how to treat it to obtain desired results. Surpris-ingly, many great B/Bs remain in the bathing room, preferring the security of knowing there will always be a need for their expert services. Bathers-in-training, “groomer wan-nabes”, seasoned groomer techs and salon owners will bene t from this day-long program with tips on equip-ment and products to make the job easier. From getting the dog ready for the tub, to nding the right shampoo through proper bathing and blow-drying techniques, Teri will cover the B/B fundamentals. Safety issues and handling will be stressed.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE AND HOW TO USE THEM

From brushes and nail clippers, muzzles to grooming loops, Teri cov-ers equipment basics, highlighting correct uses, in an e ort to make the work easier and more comfortable for pet and bather. “ ese techniques and tools will make the nished groom a true work of art,” says Teri. Anals and ears will be discussed.

DEMATTING…IT’S NOT WHAT IT USED TO BE

Everyone has a technique for

dematting a neglected pet. For some, it’s a shave-down and then entering the pelt in a Mat Contest. For others, it’s a time-consuming, hair-splitting experience, destined to take its toll on the pet, the B/B or both. Teri ex-amines the most common and e ec-tive products, tools and techniques for the demat dilemma without getting all tangled up.

WHAT’S IN THOSE BUBBLES???SHAMPOOS, CONDITIONERS & SPRAY

Tocopherol, Ergocalciferol, Sodium Chloride. Teri takes a “groomers-eye” view of the stu we use every day in language we can understand. Shampoos, sprays and conditioners are our most expend-able items but, what do we really know to select the right product for our situation? ( ose scary words

GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR BATHING AND DRYING TIME

Bathing and drying are the most underestimated aspects of our jobs. Techniques can make or break a groom. The ability to properly apply products and thoroughly cleaning and then drying the pet will have a direct influence on the finish. You will hear about time-saving equipment and techniques.

FRIDAY

SUPER SHORT STYLES As professional stylists we hate

to hear those words “take it all off ”. This is one phrase that takes most of the creativity and expertise out of our job. In this seminar Sue and Jay will show “short styles” that still represent your reputation as a styl-ist. This seminar will include quick tips to do nice, short trims on drop coats and curly coats without shav-ing the pets with a blade. This is a must see for all stylists!

THE POODLE IN THE GERMAN TRIMThis is a trim that is growing

in popularity. It is a very handsome trim for those poodle people who don’t like the pom pom look. In this fun seminar Sue and Jay will show you how to achieve balance following the correct poodle

structure in an easy “dot to dot” method. You will also learn the different ways to do the “German Tail”. Coat care, blow drying techniques and scissoring tips will also be discussed.

TERRIFIC TERRIERSYou can achieve a natural

look on a terrier without hand stripping,” says Sue, “that every discriminating pet owner will love.” Sue and Jay will demo their winning techniques on achieving the correct lines on terriers using clippers that will o er a natural look on a pet trim. ey will also discuss the di erence in terrier heads.

SUPER STYLING HEADSFirst impressions are everything

in the art of grooming. The first

thing your client should see when the dog is groomed is a great expression. In this informative seminar, Sue and Jay will take you through the grooming steps of different head styles. You will learn breed specific techniques as well as different head style options. This seminar is for those groomers who want to fine tune their techniques to wow their clients immediately upon seeing their dog.

This daylong program is four hours long and included in the DO IT ALL and Friday & Saturday package plans. Each hour-long session can also be purchased separately. See Schedule and Registration for starting times and fees. Program includes Trade show on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

SUPER STYLING WITH SUE & JAYSUE ZECCO & JAY SCRUGGS

In all aspects of animal care services, we are almost always concerned about the animals’ physical health first. We cannot ignore our responsibility for protecting their behavioral health as well.

In this 4 hour seminar, Teena will define behavior wellness and take an in-depth look on how we influence the behaviors we see in the dogs we groom. Modifying difficult behavior requires

modifying our approach that elicits those behavior patterns we find so challenging to work with. Learn how to enable and empower your dogs to endure the grooming experience and build on it to become a positive event for the dog.

We will also discuss the benefits of being a compassionate salon; which includes client retention, loyalty, and client commitment. The information presented in this seminar should push you to evolve

and make big changes to your entire operation.

This daylong program is four hours long and included in the DO IT ALL and Friday & Saturday package plans. Each hour-long session can also be purchased separately. See Schedule and Registration for starting times and fees. Program includes Trade show on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

FRIDAY

GROOMER’S BUSINESS SUMMITTERI DIMARINO

Let’s face it. Do we ever really know everything there is about run-ning a business? ere is always room for input and this all-day, four session summit will help answer some of the questions you may have about your business. From opening the doors, nding clients, hiring employees, record keeping, payroll and pricing, it is a daunting task just to keep your head above water and make a pro t.

CREATING THE IDEAL GROOMING SALONTeri will take you on a tour from

the oor to the ceiling and from wall to wall in the construction of a new, state of the art, grooming salon that maximizes space and pro ts. Highlights will include the ne art of setting up a big salon in a small space by using time and labor-saving equipment, e ective storage by applying the “art” of utilizing “vertical square footage”. High visibility grooming and client comfort will be addressed as well as some hidden aspects of salon ownership such as seeking the right location, dealing with leases and landlords as well as making retail work for you.

MARKETING YOUR BUSINESSWho are you? What makes you and

your business di erent from the oth-ers? What do you want to say to your customer? How do you get the word out? Attracting new customers is great, but don’t take the ones you already have for granted. Good customer service skills are a must and Teri will take you through the steps to help assure that your clients will not forget you. From naming your business and de ning your image to mission statements, business cards, brochures and advertising, doing it

right, the rst time (or second) will come easier after sitting through this seminar.

THE PAPER CHASEHiring and ring employees is

never easy and governmental regula-tions require a business owner to do a lot more to keep things on the straight and narrow with the labor boards and your employees. Teri will go through a good amount of the ne detail on the paperwork that is necessary in your business to keep you in compliance and avoid problems down the road.

PRICING, PERCENTAGES & PROFITSTeri will share her business savvy

and expertise on running a lucrative salon. “What do I need to consider be-fore setting my prices? How do I raise my prices? What are my margins? Am I making a pro t? Why are my employees making more than me?” ese, and a lot more questions, will be answered to help keep your salon productive and pro table.

is daylong program is four hours long and included in the DO IT ALL and Friday & Saturday package plans. Each hour-long session can also be purchased separately. See Schedule and Registra-tion for starting times and fees. Program includes Trade show on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

This daylong program is four hours long and included in the DO IT ALL and Friday & Saturday pack-age plans. Each hour-long session can also be purchased separately. See Schedule and Registration for start-ing times and fees. Program includes Trade show on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

We also hope to raise awareness and encourage others to get involved with their local rescue.

Each rescue organization will be given a donation for the use of each dog that they provide. In addition, attendees can donate to any dog that they fall for and contribute toward the adoption fees for that dog. Any money above 50% of the adoption fee will be put into the rescue’s general fund. All participating dogs are available for adoption based on the rules of each shelter.

Each competing groomer will receive a ribbon and the appreciation of all their fellow groomers. Trophies and prize money will be awarded to the top three groomings based on judging. Prize money is $1,000 for rst place, $500 for second, and $250 for third. e winner of the Round-up will be invited to attend the National Rescue Round-Up Invitational at Groom Expo and a chance to win a cruise and be featured on the cover of Groomer to Groomer.

Of course, the ultimate goal is to make the dogs as cute and healthy as possible to help them nd their forever homes. If you can’t compete, be sure to come out and support the competitors as they help these dogs go from rags to riches.
