GCC Genetics Griswold Cattle Welcome2010 has been a year of changes at GCC. New beginnings bring the realization of the joint effort it takes to make an opera-tion successful. The people we work around, talk to, and associate with day in and day out are the reason we love this business so much. Our parents, Joe and Elaine, brought our family to Oklahoma in the early eighties. It was a move that forever shaped our lives and our story. I hope they realize just how appreciated they are for everything they do (including the five course meal they feed me every night.) With a base of the original Griswold Angus cow families that came from Wisconsin, we began to carve out our own story in Oklahoma cow country. Greg, Gar, and I are located in Stillwater, OK. We have two brothers and a sister, Joseph, David and Melanie that live in Miami, Oklahoma with their families. David and Joseph have their own successful cattle business, but always find time to help out whenever we need an extra hand in South Dakota and Stillwater.

Greg, Gar, and I owe everything to a man named Ed Burke, owner of the Genoa National Bank in Genoa, Nebraska. He believed in our ability and helped us become successful. Dupree, South Dakota has become our second home. This is a major part of GCC and the quality cattle we bring you each year. We acquired the Birkeland herd in 2002. It is a grass based operation where cattle must be able to thrive on forage and be productive off the land. Ken Birkeland manages the cattle in South Dakota. He is a best friend and mentor to all of us. He’s the hardest work-ing man we know, managing everything with a love of the land and the cattle that is second to none. Ken Birkeland has forgotten more about a cow than most of us will ever know. Bryson Johnson worked all summer with Ken. Those two had a ball mating the cows and trying to figure out the future “Lot One.” There are not enough thanks to be given for the memories, laughter, and work accomplished in South Dakota. In 2005, we acquired a set of OCC cows. You will be able to witness these genetics first hand. They have really complimented GCC genet-ics, resulting in cattle that have their own “classic” look and style. Greg Griswold is the driving force behind GCC’s Angus program. He runs all the cows in Stillwater, Ok and spends his fair share of time in South Dakota. He studies pedigrees constantly, and can talk OCC & GCC pedigrees all day long.

Gar oversees the feeder cattle operation. Whether he’s sitting in a sale barn or talking on the phone, he always knows what’s going on in the business. He knows that cattle still have to perform and keeps us focused on value based genetics. Gar talks with Kim Klotz daily about pric-ing, hedging, corn prices, etc. Kim is a partner in GCC but has also become a really great friend. If I ever need someone to offer direction with decisions, I call Kim Klotz. I really value his opinion and sound thinking. He oversees all the semen and invoices and has really brought financial focus to our program. Thanks, Kim, for your hard work and belief in GCC.

The Oklahoma crew is truly Classic. Greg Burden manages the office, but really he can do anything. He loves PR work, and he’s damn good at it. He keeps everyone at the barn organized. Every idea I have in the office or the barn, I run past GB. Luke Doris knows cattle. He knows a great one and has the ability to make one look better than anyone that walks. We really value Luke’s opinion, as someone is always asking him, “How good do you like this one, Luke?” He does a lot on his own, but at the end of the day, his loyalty is to GCC. David Mozingo…what can I say about Mo? I asked him in 1985 to come over and help me for a couple of days and he’s still here. It’s quite a story of friendship and loyalty. He’ll be in South Dakota on a day’s notice, in the picture pen when Sneed yell’s, “let’s go,” or out in scorching 100 plus weather getting the final touches on the new sale facility.

Maurice comes and Maurice goes, but he’s like Mozingo, Luke, and GB. When things are looking bleak and you don’t know how to get every-thing accomplished, Maurice will call and say, “ya need me?” He’s supposed to be in Utah with the pipeline but drove all night when he found out that we were in a bind. Our cow records are impeccable and it’s because Candee cracks the whip. Whenever we do anything with the cows you better write it down. She handles all the registrations, transfers, and any other paperwork associated with the cows. Cody Keesee is a man that is never seen without a smile. A good attitude goes a long way and he has the work ethic to go with it. He manages a set of cows for us on his ranch in Holdenville, Oklahoma and does a great job.

Shannon and Macy are great pals and work together tirelessly to get the heifer calves so gentle. Colton and Clayton are always helping out where needed, even when it’s just for comic relief. I ride their cases pretty hard, but I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t love them. Also a huge thanks to Bart, that guy stands in the clipping room from daylight to dark and never says a cross word. He’s as good a clipper as there is and part of the reason is he clipped alongside Bruce West. Bruce has helped us get ready for all the sales. Heck, he’s the one that clipped Irish Whiskey when he sold (while singing a George Straight song). He’s a great friend. Someone from the GCC crew talks to Bruce almost every day.

Our Grass to Grid sales are tied closely to a man named Jeff Bourquin from Follett, Texas. Our bull sale is held there every April. I talk to him every day not only because we are great friends, but because he is constantly dealing directly with our customers. He has a deep knowledge of GCC genetics and also greatly understands the cattle business as a whole. Jeff buys thousands of calves a year off of visual appraisal. He has the vision to realize the importance of performance oriented cattle that are moderate and easy fleshing. He is the driving force behind our Customer Appreciation Grass to Grid Commercial Female Sale to be held December 30th, 2010 in Beaver, Oklahoma.

We extend an invitation to this first ever “Classic” event. It consists of the largest gathering of Irish Whiskey and Chill Factor genetics to ever sell at public auction. The cattle are pleasing to the eye and we have solid faith in their ability to be profitable for their new owners. If you have any questions call any member of the GCC crew. We’ll be happy to help you. Thanks for your interest and continued support of the GCC Program.

SIRE: GCC SLC Merger 459U DAM: GCC Sioux Miss 13/6S (Whiskey x Angus)Birthdate: 5/2/10 Tattoo: 524X Breed: 1/2 Mainetainer

Everyone remembers their first real crush. Those type always caused the heart to skip a beat or two and left a lasting impression. Heartthrob is that type and kind. She’s functional, she’s sound, she’s the type that really will make you turn around and look twice. Merger is going to be a name that you see more of at GCC. His first calf crop did not disappoint. They are functional, big bodied, sound moving cattle that have the show ring look and the brood cow feel. All summer the competition has been on as to which heifer will be lot one. That title isn’t taken lightly. This girl knows how to move and knows you’re watching, and when she stops, she poses with just the right amount of sass and style to bring your gaze back time after time. She was destined to wear purple, after all she’s not just another model, she’s a classic heartthrob.

SIRE: GCC SLC Merger 459U DAM: GCC Whiskey Girl 482 (Whiskey x Angus)Birthdate: 3/10/10 Tattoo: 411X Breed: 1/2 Mainetainer

Try this pedigree on for size. The powerful Whiskey Girl that was lot 1and sold to Dylan Evans lies on the bottom side and our new and upcoming herd sire Merger, owned with Sooner Land and Cattle is on the top. Whiskey Girl is proving to be a powerful donor. She produced a $12,000 maternal sib to 411X that sold to Pat and Nancy Weise. Sun Kissed is not only bred to be great, she’s going to write her own legacy. She’s stout made with loads of bone and style. She was our poster girl for the “early ad’s.” Sun Kissed is definitely in the competition for the popularity contest. You’re bound to love her.

Line up boys, you’ll want this one’s number. The test of a great female lies in her ability to transmit beauty, power, and style and Jada Sioux’s dam was able to do it all. This is one of the prettiest cows we own in South Dakota and you wouldn’t mind having a cookie cutter mold of her and make them all the same, she’s that good. 546X is a wedgy made powerhouse with extra broodiness and look. It’s hard not to appreciate just how soft made she is with the amount of power she carries. Don’t miss out on this one. The stars have aligned and there are great things destined for her future.

This is our covergirl. Take note as she carries more than a pretty face. This girl has style to burn the whole way through. She carries overall power through her top and lower quarter, plenty of bone and rib, and ties it together with style and class. Sharpie daughters are powerful brood matrons. His pedigree speaks for itself. He is a Witch Doctor/Meyer/Cu-nia/066. She was probably the most consistant Angus genetic powerhouse in GCC history. Whether bred Angus, Maine or Simmental, she never missed. She is the granddam of Chill Factor and to this day when you see “066” in an ear tag they are the prettiest cows in the pasture and they flat out produce!

SIRE: Irish Whiskey DAM: GCC Miss Sharpie 13/4 (Sharpie x Angus)Birthdate: 4/20/10 Tattoo: 007X Breed: 1/2 Mainetainer

With the power of Sharpie and Whiskey Miss Dupree has all the potential in the world both in the show ring and in the pasture. She carries stoutness and power, yet stays super feminine in her design with extra exten-sion through her front. She has what it takes to generate more than a passing glance and a lucrative income incentive. Full sib to the 2009 sale lot 58, that sold for $4750.

SIRE: Irish Whiskey DAM: GCC UC 4/71P (Commercial Angus)Birthdate: 4/2/10 Tattoo: 531X Breed: 3/8 Mainetainer

A heifer’s true test won’t be in the show ring in front of a crowd of people and a judge. It comes in a pasture with her first calf at side and on down through the years in her ability to generate a profit in the future. 531X has the “donor look.” Take the time to study the rib shape and dimension she carries. When you see her it makes you giddy thinking of the type of mature cow she’s going to be.

Power and femininity are two words that when used together spell competition. This girl is destined for great things. There is a rhyme and a reason to the way all the two year old Whiskey offering is bred in this sale, the Chopper x Whiskey is lethal. Whiskey females are working in a variety of ways and we couldn’t be more excited to offer you this cross. 262X is big bellied and stout made, with extension through her front, super pretty through her shoulder and power when you stand behind her. Get her on the move and you love her even more. Stand back boys. If you don’t own this one just come to the harsh reality you’re going to have to compete against her. This girl has style and profile all wrapped up into one package. Chopper is going to be a bull that see’s increased use at GCC. It’s not hard to see why when the end product is put together like this. If you’re wanting to get noticed in the show ring and then have a front pasture kind of cow, 269X will accomplish your goal.

Visual analysis is the major determination when we evaluate livestock. The ability to sire that eye catching cor-rectness and balance is an attribute that makes cattle great and bulls famous. Irish Whiskey has created a sensa-tion throughout the industry that is untouched in his ability to transmit “the look” to not only his offspring but down through the generations. The importance of a touch of Whiskey on the bottom side not only makes them good, it makes them great. Whiskey daughters and granddaughters have won almost ever major show across the nation. They are walking out of the winners circle and right into the donor pen. Just recently at the American Royal the Supreme Champion female and three out of the four Junior Maine champions were out of Whiskey daughters. Whiskey works with Simmy influenced cattle, he works on Angus based cattle, and his ability to produce seedstock Maine genetics is unmatched. Steer producers across the nation are just coming to the real-izations of how profitable a powerful Irish Whiskey daughter can be when matched with Heat Wave influenced genetics. With countless high sellers and champions gracing not only the winners circle but also the pastures as top donors and producers, Irish Whiskey has secured his place in history as one of the “Classics.”

The set of females that follow in this Classic event are perhaps where the largest profit potential of the sale lies. As coming three year olds, they have their whole productive life ahead. You have been able to witness firsthand the power of Whiskey on the top and bottom side in the open division. These 2 year olds weaned off a set of heavy, bloomy calves in South Dakota. They may not carry as much condition, but they carry the punch and power of Irish Whiskey. After seeing the magic when you breed Chopper to Whiskey daughters, these cows are sure to be a great investment.
