Welcome to Ohlde Cattle Company’s 21st Annual Basic Blacks Bull Sale. Once again this past winter has left a lasting memory on those that endured elements from extreme cold to excessive snow fall or even drought conditions. Many areas throughout the country will need significant moisture to have ample grass and forages in order to sustain the cow herds. Stressors such as this really sort those cow herds that lack TRUE fleshing ability.

Cattle numbers are at record lows while cattle prices and inputs such as corn and other feed commodities are at an all time record high. This has changed the outlook of many cattlemen today. Now may be the time to build an efficient cow herd to reap benefits available through use of forage-based diets. The focus here at OCC still remains the same as it has for nearly 30 years to produce the type of cattle that increase profit.

The Basic Blacks program began with a commitment to producing low birth, strong maternal, cost efficient performance cattle that are thick, deep, easy fleshing and require minimum maintenance while working in a forage-based environment. Our appreciation for this type of cattle evolved over time and the years of working with large numbers of cattle of several breeds gave us the practical insight into the type of cattle needed to meet our goals.

At Ohlde Cattle Co., balanced multiple trait selection has always been the cornerstone of our breeding philosophy. Most cattlemen today would admit that single trait selection has caused more problems than it’s solved. One need only look at the recent past to see how overemphasis on frame, growth and carcass resulted in excessively large framed, high maintenance cattle that are not practical or profitable. Despite this awareness, true multiple trait selection is often done in name only – witness the number of people who use only milk EPDs when talking about maternal traits or marbling EPDs when discussing carcass sires.

We believe that cattle breeding is an art. There remain essential cow herd traits not addressed directly by performance testing and EPDs that Basic Blacks cattle must have. These traits include fleshing ability on forage, capacity , excellent udder quality, a gentle disposition and structural correctness. Mere buss words you say? Traits that are hard to define and quantify can still be real. When differences exist between cattle, no matter how subtle, selection pressure can be applied to those differences. Maybe that’s where the “art” of cattle breeding comes into play.

Making progress through multiple trait selection can be a slow process but our long term devotion to that process has resulted in cattle that we believe are unique. At Ohlde Cattle Co., maternal is more than just milk, carcass means more than marbling and performance is more than just pounds.

Many cattlemen, commercial and seedstock producers alike, are finding themselves at a crossroads with their cow herds. Years of breeding for increased production or using too many highly promoted, unproven bulls has resulted in cattle that are – and let’s be frank here — big, bad and ugly.

Ohlde Cattle Co. is one of the few programs truly equipped to address this problem. While remaining solidly performance based, our unique herd bull battery is also designed to moderate size, add muscle, improve structural soundness and fleshing ability and improve udder quality while maintaining profitable production levels. Put simply, the Basic Blacks program is going beyond performance.

Sale Location: Marysville Livestock & Commission Co. Inc., 1180 Hwy. 77, Marysville, KS. Sale barn is located on the east side of Hwy. 77 just north of where it intersects with Hwy. 36.

Transportation: Marysville is located on Hwy. 36 in north central Kansas about 100 miles west of St. Joseph, MO. Major airlines serve Kansas City, MO; Lincoln, NE; and Omaha, NE — all within 150 miles of Marysville. U.S. Air Express and American Airlines serves Manhattan, KS (45 minutes from sale site).Marysville has a paved airstrip for light planes. We will be happy to arrange transportation to and from the airport on request.

Trucking: We are available to assist with trucking arrangements and will guarantee delivery for no more than $250 per head on purchases totaling $10,000 or more. Purchases totaling less than $10,000 will be delivered at the cost of trucking. Bulls picked up sale day will receive a $50 discount. Call with questions.

Health: Cattle sell with the proper health papers for interstate shipment.

Terms: All cattle sell under the standard terms and conditions recommended by the American Angus Association. All sale bulls are guarnateed free of the AM and NH genetic defects. OCC will retain 1/3 semen interest of all bulls and 1/2 interest on a select few.

Insurance: Livestock insurance will be available sale day at the clerk’s desk.

Food: Lunch and refreshments will be available on sale day.

Headliner daughters are considered the ultimate in low cost efficient females. Moderator has an excellent scrotal EPD of +.58.

Cattle Need to Thrive on Grass Not Just SurviveThe maternally efficient cow that thrives-on-grass-alone has always been the key to ranch profitability.At Ohlde Cattle Co. we embraced this basic principle as part of our breeding program more than 25 years ago and never looked back. Our vision of this cow resulted in cattle that have a moderate mature size (1,100-1,400 lbs.), loads of volume and capacity (guts) and the ability to flesh easily on grass along with exceptional calving ease, udder quality and an overall attractive phenotype. Ohlde Cattle Co. has long recognized that cow efficiency and ranch profitability intersect but the Angus $Value data is documenting that reality for all cattlemen and making it possible for commercial cow-calf operators to increase ranch profit by using these multiple-trait selection derived tools.

What’s the biggest expense affecting profitability in cow-calf operations?It’s feed costs, final answer. Feed costs have the largest impact on profitability among cost factors in cow-calf operations, accounting for more than 50 percent of the variation in herd-to-herd profits. After feed cost, the next largest cost factor was depreciation. Operating costs ranked third and calf weight fourth as profit indicators. (University of Illinois IRM)

Managing feed costs has to be a priority for the commercial cow-calf operator.Feed costs are hard to manage if the cow herd can’t adapt and maintain reasonable production levels in a grass environment without expensive supplementation. The cow herd’s ability to function on grass with minimal supplementation is limited by their genetic capacity to do so. That’s where the Cow Energy Value ($EN) can help. The Cow Energy Value is a way to compare sires for their ability to reduce cow energy requirements (expressed in dollar savings per cow per year) in future daughters. A larger value is more favorable as it translates into more dollars saved on feed expenses. When it comes to maximizing ranch profit, developing an energy efficient cow herd is not enough however. Focusing solely on $EN Value improves cow efficiency but could reduce calf weaning weights over time.

Payday for most cow-calf operators comes when the calves are sold at weaning.With current calf prices and economic instability, it is understandable why many ranchers are not motivated to retain ownership past weaning. In this scenario, the producer has a second powerful tool: Weaned Calf Value ($W). As presented in the AAA sire summary, the $W value “makes it possible to compare sires for the expected dollar-per-head difference in future progeny pre-weaning performance in a multi-trait fashion within a typical U.S. beef cow herd.” It quantifies four primary economic impact areas: birth weight, weaning weight, maternal milk and mature cow size. Selecting sires with the highest $W value that also offer sufficiently positive $EN values (+10 to +30 or higher – you be the judge based on environment and goals) will enhance profitability at weaning the most.

Ohlde Cattle Co. herd sires offer the best combination of low birth weight, $EN and $W values in the breed today.Six OCC bulls are in the top eight of the breed with less than +1 BW EPD and more than +30 WW, +53 YW and +19 $EN, +30 $W and positive ribeye. Semen is available on all those bulls. The commercial cow-calf operator can acknowledge that feedlot and carcass traits are important to the industry but these traits should not be the only focus of sire selection or ranch profitability will suffer. When calves are sold at weaning, the commercial operator should focus on $EN and $W for maximum profit. The bottom line is that selecting bulls for $EN and $W values can get most of the other areas of beef production right without trying too hard. Maternally efficient cattle are also typically competitive in the feedlot and on the rail. Perhaps it’s time to let Ohlde Cattle Co. genetics enhance your cow herd’s bottom line.
