Friedrich Gretsch immigrated tothe USA from Germany in 1872and set up his musical instrumentbusiness in 1883. Friedrich diedyoung and his son Fred GretschSr., still a teenager, took over inthe 1890’s. Fred Gretsch Sr. builtup the Fred Gretsch Company in

Brooklyn, New York, supplyingdrums and other musical itemsthroughout the world. By 1916 the Gretsch Company had outgrown its factory, and re-located to a new, larger building in Brooklyn. FredGretsch Jr. took over the reins ofthe Fred Gretsch ManufacturingCompany in 1942, but shortlyafterwards left to serve withdistinction as a Navy Commanderin the Pacific during World War II.At that point, his younger brother, Bill Gretsch, took over

as President of Gretsch andcontinued the company’sleadership in drum manufacturingand innovation. In 1985, BillGretsch’s son, Fred Gretsch,became President of the GretschCompany, and along with his wifeDinah, oversees the companytoday. Gretsch Drums are nowmanufactured in Ridgeland, South Carolina, after the factory’sre-location there in 1986.

As a result of its drummanufacturing leadership, superiorsound and aesthetic qualities,Gretsch has always enjoyed great relationships with some ofthe world’s most renowned drummers. Pioneering drummerssuch as Chick Webb, Dave Tough, Mel Lewis, Max Roach,and Art Blakey were some of the big names playing Gretschfrom the 30’s through 60’s. Today, modern day legends suchas Vinnie Colaiuta, Phil Collins, Stephen Ferrone andCharlie Watts choose to play Gretsch; we are also proudthat a new generation of cutting-edge drummers such asCindy Blackman, Rob Bourdon, Stanton Moore and PaulJohn have also discovered “That Great Gretsch Sound.”

A new generation of players brought us new inspiration thatled to the development of New Classic, Renown Maple,Catalina and Blackhawk series drums. These series taketheir cue from the top-of-the-line Gretsch USA-madedrums, and meet the needs of drummers at all playing levelsand budgets.

The Drum ShellThe soul of every Gretsch USA drum,our six-ply Maple shell design hasbeen around for the past five decadesand is an exclusivefeature that will not be found on any otherbrand in the markettoday. The one thingwe hear over and over from drummers is“That Great GretschSound” is the same as ithas always been.

The Bearing EdgeAll professional Gretsch USA drumsfeature a 30-degree bearing edge thatis unique to Gretsch and contributes

to ourlegendarysound.This edgedesignmaximizesthe

warmth of the Maple and focuses thetone and projection of the shell. Allshells are sealed in the interior withour specially formulatedSilver Sealer, which wehave used since the1960’s, to make themunmistakably Gretsch.

The Drum HardwareTo create the optimum sound, youmust start with quality materials oryour sound just won’t measure up. AllGretsch USA metal partsare made the same waythey were made in the1930’s, with heavy-dutyzinc alloy and then aredie-cast. After casting,the parts are triple-platedwith copper, then nickel,then finally chrome, and arepolished to a brilliant luster.

Toms and snare drums are finished offwith heavy gauge die-cast hoops. Allmounted toms include GTSsuspension systems for maximumresonance, and all 8", 10" and 12"toms feature Gretsch’s unique 5-lugconfiguration. The combination ofthese components contributes to thesound that has defined Gretsch for somany years.

The Drum FinishGretsch is proud to be the world’s onlymajor drum manufacturer to use

Nitrocellulose lacquer on its high-gloss and satin finished USAdrums. Nitrocellulose finishes curewith the drum over time and allowthe wood to breath. The result is a

natural drum sound, not one impededby its finish. All USA Custom drumsare hand finished, sanded and buffedin an intensive process that results in adrum that looks as amazing as it

sounds. There are far easier ways tofinish drums, but Gretsch has built

its reputation not only on itssound but its appearance, andwill not compromise when it

comes to its lacquer finishes.

For players who prefer a moretraditional drum look, Gretsch’sNitron coverings - including easily-identifiable Gretsch sparkle andvintage patterns - not only provide analternative to lacquer finishes, but aredurable and as individual as thedrummer that plays them.

The Drum HeadsGretsch Permatone heads used on allGretsch USA-made drums aremanufactured to our exactspecifications and areavailable in bothcoated and clearversions. Bassdrum batterheads are pre-muffled for agreat sound rightout of the box.
