WHY Re-Elect Greg Barnes to Division 5?

No one has the experience, commitment and passion for our region than I do! Over the past twelve years I have proven my devotion to our local community and my passion for the lifestyle that the residents of Bargara, Innes Park North, Innes Park and Coral Cove value so much.

Being very much a project-driven individual, I don’t sit back and wait for work to come my way. I truly relish in the challenge of seeking out new opportunities and efficiencies which lead to better facilities and outcomes for our communities.

I abhor red-tape, bureaucratic mumbo-jumbo and being stuck for hours at a time in closed meetings which often achieve little and, by the very nature of their secrecy, create a degree of angst and suspicion within the community. There is no doubt in my mind that many residents currently feel alienated from their Council and distanced from their elected representatives.

My sincere hope is that the incoming Council will implement a more efficient and transparent Committee system, make better use of IT communication technology and encourage Councillors back onto the street where they can engage with their constituents on a more personal face-to-face basis and find out what is happening in the real world.

I do not regard myself as an employee of the Council or part of a select team chosen to defend the organisation or its decisions. I am there as an independent representative of the community and as such I do not tolerate intimidation from within, or external to, the Council. I am however, always prepared to listen to an alternative point of view, debate any issue on its merits and to change my stance if a valid and persuasive argument is presented. I don’t reach decisions because they are popular; I reach them because they are in the best interests of the wider community.

I am the only local Councillor to have established and maintained a personal website over the past four years through which I have been able to better communicate with the community. This website, like my entire election campaign has been fully funded by myself so I am not beholden to any outside influences including business owners, property developers or real estate speculators.

My reason for re-nominating is quite simple. I have a passion for my role and for my ability to make a difference for our community; to retain a relaxed lifestyle whilst at the same time securing a sustainable future for our region, our environment and our children. I am highly motivated and believe that over the past 12 years I have repeatedly demonstrated my ability to deliver results.

My request to you is that you will continue to support my efforts to ensure that our Council remains accountable to its ratepayers and that our region continues to prosper through sustainable development, job creation and the attraction of new industries.

“I worked with Greg Barnes at Burnett Shire between 2000 and 2004. During this period I was the Council’s Chief Executive and Greg was a newly elected Councillor. I found Greg to be hard working, astute and committed to the highest standards of accountability, honesty and integrity. Greg expected those around him, including his fellow Councillors, me and my staff to exhibit those same high standards.

Greg was one of the driving forces behind the Bargara foreshore redevelopment and worked tirelessly with the Regional Development Board to get Bundaberg and the Coral Coast recognised as a tourism destination. His commitment to the community is also evidenced by the enormous personal contribution he makes to the running of community events including the annual Bargara ANZAC Day commemoration.

I have no hesitation in recommending Greg as a Councillor committed to his community and having the drive, enthusiasm and knowledge to make things happen.”

Gary Rinehart Former Chief Executive Officer, Burnett Shire Council

“I have known Greg Barnes for many years and have always been impressed by the number of projects that he gets involved with. Greg has always been able to find that fine balance between sustainable development and maintaining the natural environment that we all enjoy on the coast. I am not only pleased, but indeed honoured to support him in his bid for re-election as our Council representative.”

Dr. Warren Holloway Bargara

“If you want a job done and you want it done properly, then give it to Greg Barnes. Greg is passionate about everything he gets involved in. He loves a challenge and certainly doesn’t back away when things get tough.

I have known him as a hard worker for more a decade but over the past four years his leadership as the Chairman of the local Tourism Board has been outstanding.”

WHY Re-Elect Greg Barnes to Division 5?

Authorised by Greg Barnes, 7 Wood Glen Close, Bargara for Greg Barnes (candidate)

A BIT ABOUT ME... Councillor, Local, Professional, Family ManHappily married to Isobel for 34 years and with two fantastic children, Christopher & Susan, we moved to the Coral Coast 26 years ago for one specific reason – the idyllic lifestyle!

I worked for several years in the Diving Industry conducting excursions to both Lady Musgrave and Lady Elliot Islands before opening my own Dive Shop and Charter Boat business at Bargara in 1995.

In 1997 I began campaigning for an upgrade of the dilapidated Bargara CBD & foreshore and established the Coral Coast Chamber of Commerce & Tourism, the Bargara ANZAC Day Dawn Service and the Coral Coast Turtle Festival.

In 1999 I invited a Town Planner and an Urban Economist up from Brisbane to review the township and provide advice on how it could be improved. Shortly afterwards the Council adopted my project for a funding application which was later approved and the rest is history.

In 2000 I was elected to Council, a role which has become my passion for the past 12 years. I love the challenges, the diverse nature of the work, the opportunities but most of all, being able to make a real difference within the community.

Despite my public role, Issy and I enjoy a relatively quiet and simple life. We own a modest home in Bargara and a not-so-modest mortgage. We don’t wheel and deal in real estate or

other investments and consider our diverse group of friends to be one of our greatest assets.

Apart from our family, I live and breathe my work. I frequently work a 7 day week and often into the early hours of the morning. I have always made myself available on a 24/7 basis including over the traditional holiday periods.

In 2008 I was appointed as a Director of the Regional Tourism Organisation (RTO) and elected as its Chairman. I was re-elected in 2009, 2010 &

2011. Having pledged to restructure the failing organisation and with the assistance of a fresh Board of Directors, I attracted

one of Queensland’s most acclaimed tourism experts as our General Manager. Bundaberg North Burnett Tourism is

now regarded as one of the State’s most proactive and respected RTOs.

OUR FUTURE... Despite the difficulties of the past four years, significant works have been carried out by all Council departments throughout Division 5. Many of our roads have not only been repaired and maintained, but several have been widened and improved beyond their former state.

Long awaited flood mitigation works will soon commence on Coral Cove Drive near Jess Place and also the section of Woongarra Scenic Drive between Rifle Range Road and Moodies Road now that funding has finally been approved.

Looking ahead, I have pledged my support for a number of significant projects over upcoming years including but certainly not limited to:

• New amenities blocks at Crawford Park including showers and full disabled access to all four units

• Hughes Rd Extension (Stage 1) from Rifle Range Rd to Wearing Rd• Hughes Rd Extension (Stage 2) from Wearing Rd to Watson’s Rd• Hughes Rd & Watson’s Rd Roundabout• Intersection Upgrade at Windermere Rd, Rifle Range Rd, Back Windermere

Rd and Hughes Rd Extension• Intersection Upgrade at Back Windermere Rd and Innes Park Rd• Completion of the two final stages of the Turtle Trail footpath/cycleway

between Innes Park North & Innes Park and Coral Cove & Elliott Heads.• Back Windermere Rd Upgrade from Coral Cove Drive to Atkinson’s Rd, Elliott

Heads• Back Windermere Rd installation of two additional flood immunity culverts• Progression of the multi-million dollar Rubyanna Waste Water Treatment Plant

to service East Bundaberg and the coastal region through to Elliott Heads• Intersection Upgrade at Hughes Rd, Causeway Drive & Wessels Rd• Causeway Drive, Miller Street and Woongarra Scenic Drive Roundabout• Barolin Esplanade, Coral Cove widening to Two Lane Sealed Standard• Clarke Street, Bargara kerb & gutter replacement• Hughes Rd reconstruction and bridge over Money’s Creek floodway• Upgrade of playground equipment at Mary Kinross Park• Upgrade of playground equipment at Neilson Park• Lobbying of the new State Government to advance plans for the establishment

of a High School on allocated land at Bargara
