group has already contributed to St Jude this year, and will

make a second contribution after the end of the Bridge

season, at the end of March.

Some Benefits of Strength Training – Working With Weights

• Increases your physical work capacity and also improves your ability to performactivities of daily living (ADL’s). You will be able to work harder and longer withthe proper weight training activities.

• Improves bone density. One of the best ways you can control bone loss as youage is to add strength training into your workout plan.

• Promotes fat-free body mass with decreasing sarcopenia. The lean muscle massthat we all work so hard for decreases with age. If we don’t add strength trainingto our routine then it will turn into fat.

• Increases the strength of connective tissue, muscles, and tendons. This leads to improved motor performance and decreased injury risk. It improves your qualityof life as you gain confidence. Strength training will not only make you strong, but will also help with managing your weight.

The Bal Harbour Tower Spa offers appiontments for one-on-one fitness training, massages, hair styling manicures and pedicures and facials. Contact John at Spa@ -balharbourtower.org to make an appointment.

In MemoriamWe will miss our beloved friends

Morris Cassorla

Donald Jacobson

An exclusive, informative and empowering women’sprogram will be held on Wednesday, April 5th , 2017, at 10:30am, featuring the authors of the new bestseller: “Journey from

Invisibility to Visibility – A Guide for Women 60 and Beyond”,which focuses on finding contentment and happiness after60. You don’t have to be over 60 to attend!

Authors Gail K. Harris, MEd, LCSW; Marilyn C. Lesser,PhD, LCSW; and Cynthia T. Soloway, JD, MSSW, MA, realizedthat they shared anxieties and fears about aging as theyentered their sixties. They soon discovered they weren’talone, that many women were looking for proven copingmethods, support and encouragement as they aged, so theydecided to write a guide to enjoying life after sixty. Theauthors, all local Miami women, speak intensely and withprofessional expertise about the challenges women face as

Roz Spodek notes:” We grow older, thinking about aging, our

health, loss, grief, and family issues and concerns we want to

better manage those concerns”.

It is not necessary to read the book before the program.

The authors recently presented their wonderful workshop

at Miami Federation, and are bringing their expertise to the

women residents of Bal Harbour Tower, at our invitation and

at the suggestion of Roz Spodek. “I was privileged to be at

their amazing workshop and I felt that my friends and

neighbors would also love the messages and the power that

this message brings to us:” said Roz. The workshop will focus

on guided discussions and shared information. “It is my

pleasure to help host this event for friends, neighbors and

their guests.”

“Journey from Invisibility” authors to speakat Bal Harbour Tower on April 5th

A Friendly Reminder:If you are having a privateparty in your apartment,

please update both securityand valet a few days in

to ensure convenient parking and security for all.

A Report from the Bal Harbour Tower TreasurerMark Routtenberg, Treasurer

The Board of Bal Harbour Tower is pleased to report that we exceeded ourbudgeted bottom line for 2016 for both our general operations and for theRestaurant. As a result, we are able to limit the increase of our maintenancecharges for 2017 to 3.5%. In total all the maintenance and reserve fundassessment for 2017 amounts to 85 cents, per square foot. The auditedFinancial Statement for 2016 will be completed before the end of March, 2017.In addition, we are building up our reserve fund for future capitol replacementprojects.

The special assessment levied in April 2016 will cover the three mainprojects it was intended for, namely, Cooling Tower, Elevator, and ExpansionJoints.

Bal Harbour Tower is 27 years old. We must continue to maintain ourluxury building, its structure and furnishings in the high standard that we allexpect. In addition, we are striving to offer Restaurant and Bar Service andsocial events in the tradition we are accustomed to. We are trying to achievethese goals while respecting fiscal responsibility.

We welcome ideas from owners that can help us improve our objectives. If you have suggestions, please submit them to our Manager, at your earliestconvenience: [email protected]

BAL HARBOUR TOWER BOOK GROUPENJOYS OUTSTANDING DISCUSSIONS

The BAL HARBOUR TOWER BOOK GROUP continues to meet monthly, on

Wednesdays through April, with the discussion led by group members. “We love

the knowledge, insight and energy that our members are sharing with us, as they

lead the conversation,” notes group co-founder Frema Routtenberg. “We have found

that our own residents are best prepared to share a conversation about the themes

and content of these books. We all share so many personal perspectives and still,

we come to the conversation with diverse experiences – and sharing our thoughts

has brought us great camaraderie and enlightenment. Recent novels discussed

included “The Marriage of Opposites” (the story of Jewish painter, Camille Pissaro and

his family) with a far ranging, brilliant and provocative discussion led by resident

Rebecca Tenenbaum and, in February, “An Officer and a Spy”, (the story of the French

Officer who proved that Dreyfus was innocent) with the exciting discussion led by

Marsha Elser.

• • • • •

The Book Group will meet on Wednesday, March 15th when the group will be

led by Frema Routtenberg and will discuss the “Man in the White Sharkskin Suit”. In

vivid and graceful prose, Lucette Lagnado re-creates the

majesty and cosmopolitan glamour of Cairo in the years

between World War II and Gamal Abdel Nasser’s rise to

power. Her father, Leon, was a boulevardier who conducted

business on the elegant terrace of Shepheard’s Hotel, and

later, in the cozy, dark bar of the Nile Hilton, dressed in his

signature white sharkskin suit. The memoir was the Winner

of the Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature and hailed by

the New York Times Book Review as a “brilliant, crushing

book” and the New Yorker as a memoir of ruin “told without melodrama by its

youngest survivor.” The group meets in the BHTBar/ Lounge at 10:30. Of course

all residents are welcome.

FROM THE MANAGER, LEONOR ORTIZ

Thanks to your patience and cooperation, Bal Harbour Tower residents survived 2016 and all of the obstacles thatcame with it. When we embarked on completing the necessary Cooling Tower project, never did we think it would beas challenging as it was. But together, with the help of our dedicated Board of Directors, staff and engineers, wepersevered and got through what was, and will be, the most difficult undertaking in the history of Bal Harbour Tower. Also, we are in constant communication and working closely with our attorneys to expedite claims for those residentsstill waiting on a resolution, and I have been reassured that the end is near.

It’s important to remember that while our building is beautiful, it is 27 years old, so routine maintenance, repairsand updates are to be expected. There is still work to be done but we’ve made significant progress over the last 18months. As we move forward with enhancement projects, we’ll continue striving for excellence to meet the highstandards that are synonymous with Bal Harbour Tower.

Now, I’d like to take this opportunity to share a few other important reminders:

1. Restaurant Billing – to accommodate several requests, we have reinstated the restaurant billing cycle to close onthe last day of the each month. As a result, you will receive statements within the first ten days of each month.

2. Hurricane Season – each year, Hurricane Season starts in June 1 through November 30. Every unit is responsiblefor securing his or her apartment in the event of a storm, which includes clearing your balcony. If there is an impendingstorm and you require staff to secure your home on your behalf, you will be subject to an appropriate fee. Please taketime to prepare your unit if it will be unoccupied during this period. Be sure to test your shutters and ensure they arein working condition in advance. If shutters need repair, please contact the office for a referral.

3. Elevators – The Elevator Modernization project will begin this summer and each car will take 12-15 weeks forcompletion. The Service Elevators will be first to undergo renovations, which means vendors who normally use thedesignated elevators will temporarily have to use the same elevators as residents. Additionally, personal unitconstruction projections will be suspended so please plan accordingly; however, emergency projects and minormaintenance requests, e.g. painters, handymen, and routine service repair professionals will be permitted to enter thebuilding with proper notification. Once a definitive timeline has been established, we will circulate the update viamass email and regular mail. If you anticipate a restoration project within the next six months, please put the detailsin writing (project start date, type of project, the project timeline) for review and approval.

4. Parking Garage – The expansion joint and structural repairs – in the parking garage will be finished by the fall.We will be doing small sections at a time so residents are not significantly impacted. If you will be out of town duringthis period but plan to park your vehicle in the garage, please be sure our valet staff has the ability to move it to anotherlocation.

5. Service Corridors – We understand that Service Corridors, especially on the South side of the building are indisrepair. An overflow drain was installed from the Cooling Tower, down to the sanitary drain under the trash roomto comply with local building codes. We are working with the Cooling Tower vendor to get this resolved by mid-March.

As always, I welcome your feedback. If you have any questions or concerns, I encourage you to send me a quicknote at [email protected] or feel free to stop by my office.
