How will these projects benefit Minnesota?The Commission unanimously selected the projects listed within this brochure for funding recommendations. The goal was to identify “Legacy-worthy” projects that will provide enhanced opportunities and enduring value for Minnesota residents and visitors.

What criteria were used to evaluate funding requests?All funding requests were evaluated based on the criteria and principles defined in the Strategic Plan:• Classification Criteria – provide a high-quality destination; well-located to serve a regional population and/or tourist destination; enhance connectivity; and/or fill a gap in recreational opportunity• Four Legacy Strategic Directions – connect people and the outdoors; acquire land, create opportunities; take care of what we have; coordinate among partners• Guiding Principles and Themes – complimentary to above; with an additional focus on projects most relevant to and valued by residents and visitors, and those that foster economic development in Greater MinnesotaAre all parks and trails eligible to apply for funding?

Only parks and trails designated as regionally significant are eligible to request funding. The designation requirement and the funding request evaluation process ensure that projects recommended for funding are well-vetted and of high regional value.

Out of 177 applications in 2014 and 2015, a total of 27 parks and trails have achieved regional designation.Additionally, 27 parks and trails have ranked high and are in the process of achieving regionally significant designation.

About the Greater Minnesota Regional Parks and Trails CommissionThe Greater Minnesota Regional Parks and Trails Commission (Commission) was established by Legislative action in 2013; Minnesota Statutes 85.536. Establishment; purpose – The Greater Minnesota Regional Parks and Trails Commission is created to undertake system planning and provide recommendations to the legislature for grants funded by the parks and trail fund to counties and cities outside of the seven-county metropolitan area for parks and trails of regional significance.
