Economic Development. We all want it. GBP is committed to pursuing it. But what exactly is it? Wikipedia defines economic development as “the process by which the economic well-being and quality of life of a nation, region or local community are improved.”

Economic well-being and quality of life. That is the foundation of economic development. Most economic development efforts are driven at the local level. After all, every community has unique challenges and therefore requires different solutions. In a practical sense, this means every aspect of the Greater Burlington Partnership is engaged in economic development activity.

Sometimes economic development activity is obvious. When Grow Greater Burlington helped bring Silgan Containers with 100+ jobs to the area, everyone recognized that as economic development. But consider, when the Greater Burlington Convention and Visitors Bureau promotes our area and draws people in, they help generate overnight stays in local hotels and spending in local restaurants. That’s economic development, too. When Downtown Partners secures grant dollars that helps restore historic buildings or attracts a new business to fill an empty storefront, that’s also economic development. When the Chamber of Commerce trains and equips young professionals, leads the way on community infrastructure improvement projects or organizes mega events such as RAGBRAI, that too is economic development.

What then should be the GBP focus of economic development efforts moving forward? I have a few ideas. Clearly workforce is at the top of the list. Attracting and retaining top talent to our region, growing our population, helping students find meaningful career pathways that lead to local good paying jobs - all worthy economic development pursuits. How about we look at pursuing, focused work to tell the Greater Burlington story? As a newcomer, I see so many positive community attributes. I think we can be even more intentional in promoting Greater Burlington for both attracting new residents as well as more tourists. Perhaps we will even launch an entire community branding campaign.

Hopes & Dreams listening sessions have begun. In coming months, I am hosting gatherings all around Greater Burlington, including Mediapolis and Danville. Watch for your opportunity to participate and help build our focus for tomorrow. We may find ourselves talking about housing, or childcare, or a host of other topics. It’s all relevant. It’s all economic development. It means improving the quality of life for everyone in Greater Burlington. Come join in – be part of the nuts and bolts of economic development for our area.

ON THE COVER October is National Manufacturing Month

This month we celebrate all of the outstanding local manufacturers that have invested in the Greater Burlington community. The perception that manufacturing takes place in a dark, dirty environment couldn’t be further from the truth. Advanced manufacturing happens in safe, clean, bright facilities that are driven by technology and led by the brightest minds.

Our state-of-the-art facilities are constantly evolving with emerging technologies and automation that take the monotony out of the process, making for a challenging and rewarding career. These careers require a highly skilled workforce that will be built right here at home. Our area schools are filled today with tomorrow’s future technicians, problem solvers, engineers and team leaders that will drive the industry forward.

This month we feature three engineers at ABB pictured inside their advanced customer experience center. On the left is Vicki Trojanowski, a Manufacturing Engineer and graduate from the University of Iowa School of Engineering. In the center is Timothy Dawson, also a manufacturing engineer from the University of Iowa whose focus at ABB is on the assembly process. On the right is Burabari Akinrinde (known as BB), a Quality Engineer and graduate of Texas A&M - Kingsville. Three sharp individuals who are excited about their rewarding careers in advanced manufacturing right here in Greater Burlington.

Main Street Challenge Grant Recipient Opens Doors

Downtown Burlington’s reputation as a foodie hub is continuing to grow as the region’s first shared use commercial kitchen opens its doors at 805 Jefferson. The Collective, developed by Tom Wolf, was the recipient of a $75,000 Main Street Challenge Grant through Downtown Partners in 2018. The funding helped create the kitchen and adjacent food retail space; future phases of the building project include façade restoration and an upper floor residence. Downtown Partners also awarded the business a blade sign grant.

With The Collective, area bakers and cooks can rent space

to prepare food in a certified, well equipped kitchen. “We definitely see The Collective as a business incubator for local talent in our growing food industry,” said Steve Frevert. “It’s a great opportunity for these entrepreneurs to expand their capacity and test the market.” Along with a full array of commercial cooking appliances, the space includes a hydroponic grow wall for greens and herbs and retail fixtures for baked, refrigerated, and frozen foods.

For more information or to rent the kitchen facilities, contact

Tom Wolf at 715-572-2462 or [email protected].

Why did you join YP? When I moved to Burlington, I was encouraged to join YP. It has been a great group to network with and learn about local businesses, issues, and activities.

Which community organizations/events do you volunteer for? I volunteer for Paint-A-Thon, Junior Achievement and STEMFest. I also sing with Bel Canto Chorale and the Southeast IA Symphony Orchestra.

What do you enjoy most about Greater Burlington? I enjoy that Greater Burlington is large enough to have a diverse range of amenities and activities while still being small enough to run into people you know wherever you go and have an affordable cost of living. The mighty Mississippi is also a favorite of mine, as it runs by Burlington and also reminds me of my Minnesota roots.

Unique about me: I really love to travel! I'm trying to get to all 50 states but am currently sidetracked by planning a trip to New Zealand.

The Greater Burlington Sports Commission, a committee of the Convention and Visitors Bureau, has been awarded the FY20 Regional Sports Authority District (RSAD) sports grant from the Iowa Economic Development Authority. IEDA approves ten RSAD communities each year from applications received by Iowa CVB’s with an established Sports Commission. Each approved district is granted $50,000 for hosting expenses of events in the designated sports district.

This is the fifth time Greater Burlington has been approved for the funding.

A total of 17 partner sporting events, selected by the Greater Burlington Sports Commission through an application process, will receive a portion of the funding. These events taking place July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2020 are expected to attract over 58,000 participants and spectators, generate 15,300 hotel room nights and generate an estimated economic impact of over $9.4 million to Southeast Iowa’s economy.
